Happy Friday!
For nearly three weeks now, Cozmic One has been able to call John Shirreffs’ barn at Belmont home. He’s settling into a relaxed training schedule, where he is permitted to learn and grow at his own pace.
We welcomed him off the truck from Ocala, FL at the end of March and met up with John and the crew at Barn 41 again yesterday. We hope you can share in our experience through the photos and videos below.
Enjoy!
-Team Z
THE ARRIVAL: MAY 25, 2014
TRAINING: JUNE 12, 2014
Shirreffs has been documenting the process with his helmet cam, just as he did with Zenyatta. Below is one of his videos.
HorselvrZ
I was thinking ahead. My favorite jockey of all time is Mike Smith. Even before my beloved Zenyatta. He is, and always has been known as a horses jockey. No horse has
ever been worse for Mike having ridden it, especially the young and inexperienced.
He likes a chance to meet his horse and bond with it, let it know that it can trust him.
Horses know, this doesn’t take long with some it does,if they have been whipped,or ridden by a guy like JoeTalimo! I truly hope you consider him for Coz. Loved the video most of all, made me cry. The way he stood there so regal with his head up and his ears pricked forward, for a moment there it was like looking at Z. Not to mention that every time he hears a camera click he turns toward it with his ears pricked, another Z move.No thoroughbred has moved me like she did! since I’ve lived Iong enough to see another great one, Lady Zenyatta, and the great Secretariat! Of corse I’ve seen others, but they havn’t moved me like Secetariat, RivaRidge and very few others. Not likeZenyatta, the first time II saw her I would iave sworn she was a stallion! Deep chest wide chest big and tall, full of spit and fire and Look at Me, she mite get a little sweat before a race, but no foam! I always look for that. Another plus Penny Tweedy was at all of her races. Big compliment. Well, thanks for listening to my ramble love the Coz HorselvrZ
And no jockey since Willie the shoe who I had the pleasure to meet Is as good as Mike
Smith, since. Willie Shoemaker!
Terry Crow
HorselvrZ–I concur with your opinions. I also had the pleasure of meeting Bill Shoemaker when I was young. I will never forget the kindness he showed me when I would visit the stable area. Both men are/were exemplary citizens of the racing world.

Just read on Bloodhorse.com that the 2015 Breeders Cup is going to be at Keeneland. All of us in the eastern USA will have a chance to attend. Perhaps Coz and Taco will both be running. Too late for my boy Muchie as he is going to stud after this year. Maybe PM or Lea will still be around.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Oh, good. That means I can go.
shirleeinindy
LauraJ, I am getting busy looking for friends in the business who can help get tickets. Hope I can cajole my niece in Lexington to put us up for a night or two.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Fortunately, I’m within a comfortable driving distance. It will be interesting to see how they manage to provise seating for a Breeders Cup crowd. I hope it’s temporary seating–I’d hate to see them ruin the looks of the place.

Congratulations to Victor Espinoza who won at RA today but he fell foul of the British stewards by undoing his chin strap before dismounting!! When in Britain…. Hugs Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Is the beak after him now?
Free the Moose! Etc.
Beast, thinking of you. Tasty, checking my voice mail. Still nothing.

sheena-I guess all straps have to be properly adjusted and affixed when riding in England.

Guess they did not mind the Flying Dismount?

Dear Max.Scintillating performance by Kingman in the St James Palace today why, oh, why this horse never won the guineas is a mystery to me.I know it was a messy race this year but the ability was there maybe the Sussex Stakes now.Verrazano ran very well to be 2nd to Toronado.I’m sure he will win a race soon.Good weather and fashion.Treve’s big day tomorrow.Free the Moose.PU Dan and all sick horses plus Reilly.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Amazing win. He was really rolling! Guineas might have been a fluke loss for him and Australia. Moosie’s Toormore did not fare so well today. Good win for the Coolmore horse, Hootenanny. Verra just needs experience. Racing on Brit turf is an adjustment for a dirt horse.
Like to see Treve do well. Same for Estimate.
Free the Moose! Etc.
Beast, eat your oats. Tasty, I’m waiting for your call.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max I really hope Tasty gets in touch with you soon!!Espinoza was reprimanded by the beak.Moose’s friend Gary was down at the start helping some horses today.I am sure I heard Lady Jane mention the Eclipse for Noble Mission. It seems Khalid Abdulla has another star on his hands!Free the Moose PU Dan and all sick horses plus Reilly.Sheena. Hope you don’t mind me asking who is the beast??
Max
Sheena. The Big Beast is a new favorite. Here is a video of the beast in action. Big and fast. He’s got a similar pedigree to Judy’s Charlie with Deputy Minister on the distaff.
What can one say about that beak? Vic is in good company with Moosie.
Free the Moose! etc.
Beast, early to bed. Tasty, counting on you to call. Would settle for a photo.

Sheena. Forgot to mention that JudyB. first found that video of The Big Beast. I had read an article in the Boston Globe about the Beast, and she found the race video. I love that video and the commentary. Big boy wins big. He did too.

Beast, you had better be asleep in your stall. Tasty, still holding out for that photo. Hope springs eternal, Ms Temptation.

Sheena. The second horse is Guggenheim. He’s owned by Jerry & Ann Moss and trained by John Shirreffs. Another time he’ll win. These horses are babies. The Beast has only raced twice. Hoping to see more of him and Guggie. Guggie’s a chestnut. Love those guys. Grays too.
Have a good rest. Waiting for more bulletins from Ascot.
Free the Moose. Power up Danny. Power up CDA, Chromie and all others who are sick. Special shout out to Reilly. Keep going, Reilly.

Nicki Boyd-Clouston
To all the Sweet Zenyatta fans: I’m off to my cottage at the beach tomorrow for 3 months or so with NO computer!!! So sad for me. Please take good care of all our babies. Also, there was a fund-raiser on Father’s Day for the families of our 3 fallen RCMP officers called 3 Kilometers For 3 Dads. More than 8000 runner/walkers took part. More than $100,000 was raised with donations coming from ALL OVER THE WORLD. The power of social media is wonderful when used for good. All our police dept. is on 2 week bereavement leave (their duties were taken over by Mounties from different areas) & a lot of our officers showed up in their red dress uniforms & the runners stopped at the memorial in front of the RCMP headquarters to shake hands & accept condolences from many of the thousands of walkers. It was a very moving sight & makes me feel that people are good in spite of terrible things that happen. Moncton is a small city(70-80 thousand) but the outpouring of support has been awesome. It’s a terrible thing, all these mass-shootings, but, there is still a lot of good in the average person & it keeps my faith in mankind intact.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Nicki:
You are right; there are a lot of good, caring people. Have to remember that and keep the faith when these tragic events occur. So much sadness for the whole community and the Country, really.
Hope you will enjoy your vacation and look forward to hearing from you when you return. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy Berube and Peggy(N):
Judy thank you for posting the jpg Finally a large photo of Black N Beauty instead of that little almost thumbnail photo on pedigree query.
Peggy, I’ve been following Black N Beauty since before he was gelded, lol. He was gelded as a four year old. I also like black/near black thoroughbreds and he caught my attention straight away. I almost feel like contacting his owner and/or trainer and letting them know he has at least one admirer (maybe now a few more), ha-ha. Maybe they will bring him back to California and race him at Los Alamitos or Pomona this summer (he raced at Pomona last summer). My fantasy is to claim and retire him.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Especially Horses:
You’re so welcome. I know exactly how you feel about Black n Beauty and how Peggy feels about Gabbiano. We’re connected through Zenyatta whom we all love and then, personally, all of us have a special horse that just captures our hearts; mine is Papa Charlie. For you it’s Black n Beauty and for Peggy, Gabby. Maybe you can contact Black n Beauty’s trainer and ask him to let you know when he retires from racing. If he ever is for sale, there may be rescue groups in your area willing to raise the money to purchase him. Perhaps you can do some research in your area on stables and rescue facilities that might be willing to give him a forever home close enough for you to visit. I’m hoping the same thing for Peggy and Gabby. Love and Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Especially horses
I know exactly how you feel. Feel the same way about Gabbiano. I met her at the sale in Ocala, Fl in early 2012 before she was named. I visited with her a long time that day at her stall. Just felt like we kind of bonded. I talked to her about her dad War Pass that I had met before he passed away. I finally located who had bought her. Finally. It took me a long time. With a lot of Judy’s help we’ve been able to keep pretty good track of her racing career. Lost track of her again one time, But have found her again. She’s at Sunland Park now. She’s been all over. Monmouth, Calder, Santa Anita, several other places. I told her in 20l2 that I would see her again.
Thank you so much again for telling me about Black N Beauty.
Especially Horses / So Cal
Peggy,
I have no doubt you have gone over Gabbiano’s pedigree with a fine-tooth-comb. So you must know she has Numbered Account in her bloodlines through her dam Fancy Title. Can you think of any horse recently with Numbered Account on his dam’s side who has done fairly well this year? LOL. Lucky Pulpit – Gabbiano rate an A++ and with Not For Love she is A+. I wish I could True Nicks Gabby to California Chrome. The thought of more Numbered Account blood is sending me into a tizzy. Who are your stallion picks for her?
Diana_NV
Looks a lot like his dam. Keep up the good work, Coz! Thanks for sharing.

Do we have any news on the situation with Sir? Or is it a case of no news is good news. I’m getting worried. Cheers, KathyR

Dear Kathy R:
Sally B posted that she was going out of town for a while and would not be posting. As soon as she returns, I’ll email her. I hope Sir finds a caring person who will give him a happy, forever home. I know this is very difficult for Sally as well as Sir. Concerned for both of them. Love and Hugs, JB
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Judy B and Ashton,
Sally is up North at a new lake property they purchased, putting last minute touches on it. They will be gone for about a week. When we spoke the farm owner has agreed to keep Sir until they can find a place for him, she sounds like a real “nutball” after all they did to get him up there and safe. The sanctuary group has been working on some other options, hopefully something will pan out. This is all I know as of now. hugs
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sue Fredrick:
Thank you for this update on Sir. Praying things work out for him and that Sally will be able to visit him. Love and Hugs, JB

Please join me in wishing the ever so beautiful Rosalind,(Knoxville’s own) Ray (owner), Kellie (amazing beautiful inside and out fiancé) and Jenny from Landaluce Educe Stables, and Mr. Kenny McPeek the best of luck in Friday’s Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Rosalind will attempt to be the first American horse to ever win. I’m so excited. She is one of the most beautiful fillies I’ve ever been blessed to see in person, and I’ve been blessed to see the one and only Zenyatta, Rachel Alexander, Havre de Grace, Plum Pretty, Royal Delta, Ebby, and many more. She is a real pro with a chance to win. For anyone interested, here is a link to Ray’s official FB page. Pictured: ROSALIND, Ray, and Kellie. They are wonderful, salt of the earth folks who deeply love their horses. Go Rosalind!

June 18 Cherokee Devotional
Talking too much is a little like painting a picture. It is frequently what we leave out that makes it the masterpiece. We don’t have to tell everything we think-not use every color on the palette. Subtlety makes someone else think, and that is more important. Our tendency is to think that no one understands unless we spell things out for them. It is hard to keep our mouths shut when we want to say something so much-usually with a da li s ga na ne hi, irony or a degree of sarcasm, according to the Cherokee. Silence can be as unkind as saying too much but in the long run it serves a better purpose in preserving friendships. There is a time to speak and a time to keep silence, but it is a person of rare sensitivity who knows when the time is.
Tell your children of the friendly acts of Indians to the white people who settled here. Tell them of our leaders and heroes and their deeds.

Dear Kathy.Just watching the procession very humid here today.I’m waiting to see Treve in the Prince of Wales.I believe Fallon is riding Rosalind on Friday in the Coronation.Dolly’s friend Mimmyjoe passed yesterday she was 21yrs and had been in the Modern Cat contest Dolly was so sad she didn’t post yesterday.A good age though.Marty has some excellent advice for peeps problems,I love the fact that money goes through the tubes in the computer!Fubu is doing quite well still on his kitty gravy but better than nothing!Ray looked as if he loved his swim, loved the selfie of his fluffy bum!Joey’s been having a great time too and gaining so many new friends he has such a hard life!!!!Have a great day.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
So glad you’re enjoying Royal Ascot. Condolences to Dolly on Mimmyjoe’s passing. 21 is very old for a cat. Bless her! So tough when we lose furbabies. The loss of little Babinka was especially hard. Her poor mommy. PLUS her great grandmother just died, too. Marty’s fame just spreads and spreads. What a smart rat! Glad that Fubu is still hanging in there. Loved the pic of Ray after his swim. Retrievers are SO FOND of the water. We love our Joey. Have a wonderful day. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

The Fugue looked absolutely gorgeous! Just wish I had bet her to win rather than place (apparently EVERYBODY bet her to place!) :-) I think we should be given the odds for place and show as well as win!
vicki
HorselvrZ I agree with you. I did not know Joe Talamo was the type of jockey you described. Very much surprised. Love Mikey and I hope he has a successful year. He needs to stay in shape for the 2015 and 2016 Triple Crown! Coz and Zi are going to be a handful to handle. Plus the Princess in 2017. Watched Zenyatta’s Classic on TVG for the hundredth time and as always was amazed at the sheer magnificence of her body. If she had not retired (I’m glad she did because my heart couldn’t take it) I do believe she would have kept on winning and would have won the Classic again. Now we have her amazingly gorgeous offspring to fill our hearts and raise our hopes anew. Sorry, I’m feeling too wordy today.

Vicki–never apologize for being too wordy here. We all are when it comes to “our” Zenny and the kids.
