Happy Monday!
Zenyatta, 13Z and Cozmic One were visited by Jerry and Dottie this weekend. It was a particularly special visit because they were there to see Coz off as he departed Lane’s End for Mayberry Farm in Florida. At Mayberry he’ll follow in his mom’s footsteps and focus on his new routine—learning to be a racehorse. Alys captured video of his departure for the fans.
The team spent time with Zenyatta, who is looking great and in foal to War Front. They also said hi to 13Z, who’s having a blast this fall with his buddies.
We’d like to thank Lane’s End for all of the time, enery, and love that they have put into Coz. For that, we are very grateful.
Enjoy!

For all racing fans, we think you will love this tradition. We recently returned from Italy including a visit to one of our favorite Tuscan cities, Siena, home of the famous Palio races — the first July 2 and a second in August 16 since 1283. They are hotly contested, even from an Italian standpoint. Each contrade (district) of Siena selects its jockey and the horses are chosen by the drawing of straws and blessed at the local churches.
The races are run bareback three times around the Piazza del Campo. Much pageantry surrounds the events. The horses are the stars, kissed and pampered by each competing contrade. The horse can win the race even if his jockey is unseated.
Needless to say, the winner is celebrated with much passion. Days of banquets follow with celebrations long into the night. But here is the best part — the horse is the GUEST OF HONOR. He is at the center surrounded by banquet tables with his adoring contrade fans hugging and kissing him as he feasts along with his fans.

Great description of what must be a never to be forgotten event. Maybe we should treat the horses like this in our country.

TC. Agree. Swift was right about horses being noble and superior.

Since it is still Sunday, I have a few redneck rapture jokes. I have to type them quick before the lightning strikes. If you witness the sublime terror of God’s hand in the sky on the 10th day and all you can think of is whether there is still going to be lotto, you might be a redneck. If all the religious texts are destroyed and you want to recreate the Bible from memory and you keep getting it mixed up with Three Stooges jokes, you might be a redneck.

Terry, when you made a comment about the size of his door in the death of Alydar (on p.13), it got me reading several accounts of the story, I had only seen sketchy references to how Calumet failed. But ultimately I found this extremely detailed one, which reads like something out of a movie about overweening ambition, greed, corruption, and the worst of so-called “human” beings, I don’t know if you had seen it yet.
http://www.texasmonthly.com/content/killing-alydar?fullpage=1
Marshall (NC broad)
Thanks for this post, Vicki. It does read like something out of a movie. The very vilest, most reprehensible of characters. My heart still breaks for Alydar. RIP innocent one, you deserved so much better.
Terry Crow
Vicki-Thank you for posting this. I was well aware of this article. There had been a book written about the fall of Calumet titled “A Wild Ride” in which Alton Stone, the guy convicted of perjury, was a main character and treated as if he was a hero. Once one reads this article, you can see that he was probably part of the plot to kill Alydar. Who knows how much money he received as his “cut.” The prosecutor mentioned in the article is the real hero. If she had not been so tenacious in pursuing this case, none of this information would have come out. The sad part and the fact of the matter is that nobody has ever been brought to the bar of justice for this heinous crime. J.T. Lundy deserves to burn in hell. “A Wild Ride” is a good read, as it explains all of the financial chicanery that went on during the period in question. But, this article should also be read after one reads that book. The two together tell a most disgusting story. The price of a well-bred horse at a yearling sale is what led to this in the first place. History appears to be repeating itself.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Marshall & Terry, I too felt disgusted that J.T. Lundy got away with murdering Alydar, and so glibly lies about it. He & Cihak deserve only the worst in life.
Terry Crow
Vicki-If you get a chance to read A Wild Ride I highly recommend it. It will be especially interesting to you as you are familiar with this article. You will be able to detect where the author made mistakes and just how broad the scandal really was. I can’t fault the author too much as a lot of this stuff didn’t come out till after the book was published. Still, I knew the Alydar story before I read the book and was surprised as to how little was devoted to it. It was mostly about the financial dealings. I guess if you are a big enough crook, the financial institutions let you go for a long time. Bernie Madoff comes to mind. There is actually a horse currently running that has the name Madoff With The Money. If you have a Kindle, the book is available through Amazon.com.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Terry, I’ll put that on my list to read (and I do have a Kindle). But I am currently reading several other books on thoroughbreds & racing, in prep. for improving my appreciation for the BC, as I’m not much of a bettor. Unfortunately, I have to work on the BC Friday, someone else is on vacation that day, and I have to fill in for hers, as well as mine. I may try to come to S.A. very late, but it’s a long-shot.
Terry Crow
Vicki-Perhaps we should arrange to meet some other day at SA. But, I have to say, I am a disappointment is person.
Terry Crow
Vicki-That should tread in person.

Camelot retired to stand at Coolmore next year
By Stuart Riley RacingPost.com 11:51AM 14 OCT 2013
TRIPLE Classic winner Camelot has been retired from racing and will stand at Coolmore for next year’s breeding season.
The four-year-old, who won last year’s 2,000 Guineas, Derby and Irish Derby, was being trained by Aidan O’Brien for next month’s Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita but was found to be lame on Monday morning.
Undefeated until thwarted by Encke in his bid to become the first horse since 1970 to win the Triple Crown in the St Leger at the end of his Classic campaign, Camelot survived a near-death experience after a major bout of colic.

Jockey Castillo Injured in Spill at Meadowlands
by Natalie Voss Paulick Report| 10.13.2013 | 1:37pm
Jockey Oliver Castillo was preparing for surgery on Sunday afternoon after a spill in the third race of the Monmouth at Meadowlands meet on Saturday. Castillo was aboard Dutyhonorcountry, who appeared to clip heels with Neva Masquarade when the latter pulled up.
According to Joe Pagliei, agent for Castillo, the rider was in Hackensack University Medical Center preparing for surgery to fuse his C6 and C7 vertebrae on Sunday afternoon. Castillo said he basically fell on his head according to Pagliei, and had torn a lot of the ligaments in his neck in addition to fracturing his leg near the ankle.
“Other than that he’s doing good,” said Pagliei on Sunday. “He sounds good, he’s just in a lot of pain.”
Neva Masquarade was vanned off and his condition was not known on Sunday. Dutyhonorcountry came back to the barn in good order, Pagliei said, except for a scratch on his chest.

Sheena. Glad to see that Steve is on the mend, but hoping that he can get back to the UK soon. Not fun to be away from his pal, Kauto. Steve is a grand ole chestnut.
At least Camo has retired in fairly good shape. According to the article, he only needs a few weeks rest to overcome his injury, but even that is too long for the BC.

NOOOOOOOOOO! “My horse” Dullahan (♥♥♥) retired due to tendon injury. How does this keep happening? Are you seeing this Shirlee in Indiana? That stupid “elf of injury” has struck again :-(
Terry Crow
This answers a lot of questions. I didn’t understand how or why Dullahan ran such a bad race in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar. Sandy-There is a scene in Let It Ride in which the Richard Dreyfuss character asks his friend who he liked in the next race and, upon receiving the information, proceeded to scratch that horse’s name off his program. Someone who picks losers is almost a valuable as one who picks winners.

Grade I winner Dullahan retired with tendon injury
Published Oct. 14, 2013
Donegal Racing announced Monday that its multiple Grade I winner Dullahan has been retired from racing due to a tendon injury.
Bred in Kentucky by Phil and Judy Needham and Bena Halecky, Dullahan earned each of his three wins from 18 career starts in Grade I company over synthetic surfaces. The son of Even the Score captured the 2011 edition of the Grade I Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland and went on to claim the Grade I Blue Grass Stakes and Grade I Pacific Classic against older horses at Del Mar during his 3-year-old season.
Dullahan is being shipped to WinStar Farm in Lexington where he will have some rehab work done by Richard Budge and his team. Dullahan will also be available for inspection there as stud plans are worked out in the coming weeks.

TC. You’ll love this reasoning by the main trainer for the buyers of the Green Monkey. Declaration of War apparently will bid to win the BC Classic on the basis of one win on synthetic and the fact that his dam, who appears never to have raced, is a sister to Union Rags. Hope springs eternal.
