Happy Tuesday!
Cozmic One has been away at school in sunny Ocala for two and a half weeks now. He and his jolly ball are settled in to a stall with an opening so he can see and say “hi” to fellow students. On October 8, he started learning lessons like wearing a saddle, working on a lunge line, and adjusting to a rider. We’ll keep you updated about his progress.
Enjoy!

Miss joining in the conversations, but Lola Mae and I are in a maze of boxes and finishing up last minute packing. Very tired. Love and Hugs to all of you, JB and LM

Judy, Take it easy with all the packing and moving. Hope it is over soon and you are settled in and happy in your new home. Do you think Lola Mae will like it there?

Dear Shirley, Max, Marshall and Sue Fredrick and Z Family:
Thank you for your kind words and concern. I’m looking forward to Wednesday and finally moving to the new place. Lola Mae is a real trooper and I think she will make the adjustment well. It’s so funny because she is just starting to settle in to this environment and acting like she owns the building; on guard at every noise. So, we start all over next week in the new place. Here is the latest photo of Miss Thing.

Look who is helping to promote the 30-1 Breeders Cup Moments DVD that is on sale now to promote the special tonight: “The one-hour telecast (5:30-6:30 p.m. [EDT]/2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. [PDT]) captures the indelible accomplishments of the horses and individuals who graced the Breeders’ Cup with the greatest drama and excitement since the event’s inception in 1984. ”

And, who could do it better than our lovely Zenyatta? So glad others are still talking of her and all her glory.

I happened to stumble upon this. Z was indeed the star of the DVD.
Ann Maree / Tennessee
For those who might have missed it, the 30-1 special will be re-run on Oct. 31 on NBC Sports Network. Check your cable provider, or check the network web site for time. I have to say, it was very well done, Zenyatta’s 2010 Classic was shown first as the #2 of 30 Moments, and then her 2009 was shown last as the “Best”, or #1. It really was a very smart and well-done production. Sunday Silence/Easy Goer’s 1989 Classic and Personal Ensign’s 1988 Distaff were the runner – ups behind Zenyatta. Could not agree more. Don’t miss it.

Dear Max and Terry Frankel will always be “The great one” in my eyes, despite his conservative racing career and lack of travel plus he has no worries about his pension fund!! hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. For sure. Even without a large fee, Frankel is a Saudi Arabian owned horse, who does not have to worry from where his next bag of oats is coming. His stud fee is actually no match at all for his great granddaddy and great great grandaddy on both sides, $1 million, no guarantee.

His greatness as a racer cannot be denied.

Murtagh trainer AND rider of British Champions Day winner
Posted on October 19, 2013 by Jennie Rees Courier-Journal
Johnny Murtagh’s amazing season was given a glittering cap when Royal Diamond, who he trains and rides, landed the Group Three QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup.
In a pulsating finish, Murtagh drove Royal Diamond ahead of long-time leader Harris Tweed inches from the line. The winning distance was a nose
The garrulous Murtagh, who earlier today admitted he is “a good talker” during an interview on Channel 4 Racing’s The Morning Line, was briefly stuck for words and clearly highly emotional immediately after the race. This was the first winner he has trained at Ascot, although he was leading jockey at this year’s Royal Meeting with four victories.

October 20 Cherokee Devotional
The hills of autumn have a smoky look, a blue haze that hangs suspended along the horizon. On a sunny day, the sumac and woodbine vie for the brightest shades of burgundy and red. When the clouds move in the colors are muted and blended like an artist’s oils, and no less beautiful. Sound, when there is any, vibrates on the ear like faraway music. The only continuous noises are the twigs and crisp leaves that crunch beneath the feet. And then comes the surprise of a wild gobbler calling the hen turkeys to follow. The sun is warm, the air cool, the fragrance of wood smoke wafts through the woods.
Nothing compares to autumn in the quiet woods. All other seasons have their pleasant qualities, but peace is a special quality in the autumn. It is time for praise and thanksgiving-a time for saying blessings over this land and its rich harvest.
While we sat watching the herd, father said, “These horses are godlike, or mystery beings.”

Dear Kathy,
The native american had and still have a close relationship to all of nature. Especially the horse on whom they relied on for a great part of their lives in the past.
Thanks very much for the beautiful devotional.
Life was given to me by a Cherokee woman (from Wisconsin, Sally) who I never knew but I like to believe that my love of nature was also hers to give.
Hugs,

I’m sorry meant to write Sue in Wisconsin not Sally.

Dear Mary,
I have all 3 volumes of Joyce Sequichie Hifler’s A Cherokee Feast of Days. I post the devotional each day for several of my friends so I might as well post for my Z-friends, too. I found out about the books from Harriette Brillianhawk Gill during Barbaro’s valiant fight to survive. We were both FOBs (fans of Barbaro) and we became acquainted through daily posting. She started posting the devotionals every day, I loved them and I continue the tradition as well. I’m not native American, but I am nevertheless close to God, nature and everything He created. So look for the devotional each day.
Hugs,
Kathy

Dear Max Nigel(Moose’s boss) has a great contender for the Champion Hurdle next march, The New One has just beaten Rock On Ruby by ten lengths at Kempton!! But we both love the Fly!. Did you see the beautiful portrait of Frankel by Chris Levine ,it was unveiled yesterday at Ascot. Kauto not only wants a DVD but a statue also at Kempton. Hope his dreams come true.hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. The New One is obviously not following the same theory of racing as the Moose. I am glad for Moosie’s people that they have such a talented entry for the hurdles. I am however loyal to the Fly. It will be tough to beat the Fly, Ruby and Willie Mullins if they are all on form.
Is that portrait of Frankel in 3D? Saw that one. He’s a very good looking horse. Looks like Nijinsky. I was reading about Frankel’s owner, Khalid Abdullah. Apparently, according to Teddy Grimthorpe, Juddmonte is run as a hobby not as a business. Horse breeding and racing is Abdullah’s only hobby. Thought that was interesting.
Kauto is following the think big philosophy. Good for him.

Thank you so much for your thoughts of sympathy for Dullahan. He was an incredible horse – so full of personality and talent.
It will take awhile for the realization to sink in that he has passed. He was such an important member of our stable. We will miss him soooo much …
We are also sending our deepest sympathy to Jerry Crawford and Donegal Racing for their loss.
Love you, Dullahan – our thoughts and prayers are with you, buddy !!

Interesting news from Stonestreet Farms.
A statement from Stonestreet regarding Rachel’s breeding.
Rachel was not bred this year, and there is no timetable for a decision either way regarding her future as a broodmare. Rachel is still our focus and we are still celebrating her remarkable recovery

Horrible, horrible news about Dullahan. If I were a racing TB owner, I would be very concerned about his/her safety. Just too sad for words. Only 4 years old. He should have lived to 24. RIP, precious, precious boy, gone too soon.
@Judy Berube–thank you for the adorable picture of LM. I’m sure she has this job well in hand and will be directing traffic in the unpacking, etc.
Dear Dumplings–may I share a wonderful story in the midst of this sadness?
Yesterday, I had the most FABULOUS time in Austin, TX, with our daughter at the Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society Expo, a yearly event the 3rd Saturday in October.
Bluebonnet (www.behs.org) is a rescue in College Station, TX that specializes in rescues of horses seized from negligence and abandonment. As they do not own enough land to take them all in, they foster them out to trusted caregivers and supply vet and farrier visits, nutrition, and training, with the hope of adopting them to a forever home. When the horses are adopted, the must be given back to the rescue if, for any reason, the adopter cannot keep them.
You would not believe these beautiful horses were ever from less than wonderful backgrounds. Though many still carry mental scars from their dark places in the past, they are most resilient, and I wish I could take them all. Alas, without money or land, it’s not possible (not to mention my lack of horse care knowledge!).
I completely lost my heart to a BLM mustang mare named Nevada Bandana (nicknamed “Bandy”) How is that for a name??
Anyway we spent 8 hours loving the horses, watching clinics, the outdoor challenge (where they show off all they have learned), visiting the vendors, and learning that over 20 found new homes. I don’t have a final count, as the website hasn’t been updated yet. They are a wonderful group to support if anyone has any funds to donate.
I came home chilled to the bone (it was freezing), wind-burned, sunburned, but totally happy and already anticipating next year. I just wish more people knew about this wonderful event. Hugs and love to all.
Janet Newman
Barbara,
That is a wonderful post and very happy that these horses will know love, kindness and be taken care of.
I needed to see something to lift my spirits today.

Sounds like you had a wonderful day at the Bluebonnet Expo. Great that more than 20 of them were adopted. That’s a problem for me too when I look at the list of TBs on the Cantor New England October Showcase coming up. Want to rescue all of them. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max Very sorry to hear about Dullahan, it’s been a hard year for US racing fans.He will join his friends over the rainbow bridge and run free forever. I would just love a hobby like Khalid Abdulla wouldn’t you?I hope they keep Moosie well away from the New One!! hugs Sheena

Sheena. You’ll love this. UK “bumpkins” take down Frankel’s owner in land dispute. Don’t ever mess with the common law and the ancient right of passage.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/8916967/Little-village-bumpkins-defeat-Saudi-prince-in-fight-for-Shipbourne-footpath-rights.html
Terry Crow
Very interesting. Thanks for posting, Max. I did not realize just who Frankel’s connections were.
Max
Sheena and TC. Perhaps these “little bumpkins” are the UK equivalent of rednecks? Got good chuckle from this story because the bumpkin leader is a woman. She’s a champion of dog walking. In KA’s homeland, women are not even allowed to drive a car. Bravo to these freedom loving bumpkins.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
I loved that, Max. Don’t mess with “bumpkins”, indeed! It’s tough for K.A. to arrogantly argue for “security reasons”, when formerly, the Queen used to visit and stay there, and had no “security” problems, at all.
Terry Crow
Max and Vicki B–You two said it all.
