Dear Z fans and Sheena,
Hope you enjoy this article about Frankel the horse and Frankel the man
written by Steve Haskin.
FRANKEL BY STEVE HASKIN
BLOODHORSE DATE 10/21/12
Well, there’s no escaping it now. Frankelstein cannot be destroyed. Racing’s four-legged monster has run amok for the last time. All that is left is to write books about arguably the most exciting horse ever seen in Great Britain, at least in modern times. Has anyone in England, even veterans of the sport, ever seen a prop wager offering 8-1 on a horse winning a race by over 10 lengths? We’re talking European racing, where a three- or four-length victory is considered a romp. For Frankel, that’s a photo finish.
Frankel doesn’t beat his opposition, he pummels them into submission and leaves them reeling far up the track. There was great concern about the soft condition of the Ascot ground in the Champion Stakes, but Frankel was able to get the better of a top-class mud freak like Cirrus des Aigles, who had won his last five starts on soft ground by an average margin of almost eight lengths. For Frankel, he had to work harder than usual to wear down Cirrus des Aigles, but considering his bad break and the ground, and his favorite whipping boy, Excelebration, dominating the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes the race before, he did nothing but add to his legacy.
Frankel’s historic victory, capping an unbeaten career, was much needed in a year where history was thwarted a several occasions. An 11th-hour injury before the Belmont Stakes prevented I’ll Have Another from attempting to become the first Triple Crown winner in 34 years. A heartbreaking defeat in the St. Leger prevented Camelot from becoming the first British Triple Crown winner in 41 years. A quarantine regulation in Germany prevented Danedream from trying to become the first filly to win back-to-back Arc de Triomphes in 75 years.
Frankel, however, came through, not only for Great Britain and Europe, but the entire world, overcoming the kind of footing that he has been able to avoid in his last 12 races. Frankel showed it doesn’t matter how far his swift legs sink into the turf, they bounce back up as if on springs. His smooth, powerful stride makes everything seem effortless, and he has the ability to separate himself from his opposition with such alacrity, it’s as if he’d been demagnetized from them. To him, the two-furlong marker, often a seemingly brick wall to his opponents, is merely a launch pad.
Some have anointed him the greatest horse ever, while others are more restrained in their praise. Having never run over the classic distance of 1 1/2 miles, it is difficult to compare him to horses like Ribot, Sea-Bird, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, and Brigadier Gerard, or even Sea the Stars and Shergar. After Saturday, it is difficult to imagine any horse beating him up to 10 furlongs. Beyond that, it is pure conjecture. In the end, history will place Frankel where he belongs in the pantheon of greats.
From one American’s viewpoint, it just doesn’t make sense. Frankel seems an aberration, a contradiction; something that defies all the rules of genetics and racing tradition. At the risk of sounding pompous and disgustingly provincial, Frankel should have American blood coursing through his veins, especially on his sire’s side; a Seattle Slew incarnate let loose over the grassy expanses of European racetracks. After all, how else can you explain a horse who contradicts all the principals of European racing and breeding by running with the brilliance and controlled reckless abandon of, well, an American. Yet he is by an Irish-bred staying sire, out of an Irish-bred mare, by a staying stallion who was the leading sire in England, Ireland, France, and Australia multiple times each?
Europe has, of course, produced fast enough sprinters, but nothing like Frankel, who carries sprinting speed a distance of ground and just keeps going, crushing his opponents, who cannot match his devastating speed and power. You just do not see horses in Europe winning all 14 of their career starts by an average margin of six lengths, including victories of 13, 11, 10, 7, and 6 (twice) lengths. You don’t see horses opening up a 10-length lead midway through the 2,000 Guineas and winning in a canter. Here is a horse who can beat a top-class miler like Canford Cliffs with an explosive turn of foot or simply run his foes into the ground right from the start, as he did in the Guineas. If you think you can bottle him up in traffic, just watch him shove Excelebration aside in the Queen Anne Stakes like he was swatting a gnat.
So, what is the explanation behind an enigmatic wonder like Frankel? Could it be the American blood from his female family through Danzig, His Majesty, and Stage Door Johnny, gushing forth like it never has before? Those names evoke stamina more than speed, although all three displayed brilliant speed on the racetrack.
Could it be there is something mystical about this horse? Could it be the American influence is not from any of the horses in his pedigree, but from the person for whom he was named?
When Bobby Frankel died in Nov. 2009, it’s as if his spirit was whisked away to England, manifesting itself inside a yearling colt by Galileo. Why would Juddmonte name a son of Galileo after Frankel, rather than a colt with an American pedigree who could show off his brilliance in the States? Did they know something? Was it gut instinct? Was this particular Galileo yearling running around his paddock cursing out his fellow yearlings and finding something to complain about? Or perhaps he walked up to the fence one day and boldly stated he was going to be a super horse, and if you didn’t believe him you were a moron.
Whatever the reason, it is beginning to look more and more as if Frankel the horse embodies the spirit of Frankel the human, whether you buy it or not. If Bobby were granted one day to return to earth, as Emily Webb was in Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, he would have chosen today in order to say goodbye to his namesake, and he would have flashed that cocky Cheshire Cat grin of his as if to say, “Hey, it was the name that did it.”
Let’s look at the facts, Bobby hated to lose. Bobby dreamed of having that one immortal superstar for Juddmonte and believed he did with Empire Maker. Bobby was so competitive he took no prisoners on the racetrack. If he could crush you he would. Bobby was defiant and never afraid of any opponent. He never backed down from a challenge and would love to have seen his namesake come here for last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile and attempt to thwart Goldikova’s bid for a fourth consecutive victory. If Frankel the horse had come and knocked off everyone’s favorite heroine, or crushed America’s top Horse of the Year candidate, Wise Dan, this year, Frankel the person would have given that same grin and relished having spoiled the fairy tale endings, just as he did when he defeated the darling of New York, Funny Cide, in the Belmont Stakes.
Bobby may have enjoyed playing the bad guy, but behind that crusty exterior was a marshmallow of a heart and soul that always had a warm place for his special circle of friends — human, equine, and canine; not necessarily in that order. He was almost childlike around his horses and especially his Australian Shepherds. When the love of his life, Happy, died in his arms he wept like a baby and was grief-stricken for weeks, unable to talk about her without breaking down. When Happy was seriously ill, Bobby had decided to stay home and care for her rather than attend the Breeders’ Cup. As a result, he missed Ginger Punch’s gutsy victory in the Distaff. He would name his next dog Ginger and the following one Punch.
Several days before his filly, Flute, won the Kentucky Oaks in 2001, he stood outside her stall with a big smile on his face and lavished affection on her, hugging and kissing her and talking baby talk to her. He said he wanted her to win badly, simply because she was such a sweet filly to be around. That was the Bobby Frankel few people ever saw.
As for Frankel the horse, he is the culmination of a miracle that began in 1990 when a brash, outspoken Jew from the streets of Brooklyn, N.Y. formed a long-lasting bond with a Saudi Arabian prince.
It was an unlikely partnership that somehow became one of the most successful alliances in racing history. Everything they built together and everything they strove for has been realized in one very special colt, who in some ways has lifted Thoroughbred racing into an almost ethereal-like sphere. Perhaps it is appropriate that Frankel the horse remains a wonderment; unlike anything ever seen before. Some things are just meant to be enjoyed and are not worth trying to explain.

Dear Z fans,
Great comment by Sir Henry Cecil about Frankel at the finish.
“Frankel forged clear to defeat Cirrus des Aigles by 1 3/4 lengths, and cemented his status as an undefeated legend with a glittering 14-for-14 mark.
“I cannot believe in the history of racing that there has ever been a better racehorse,” Cecil stated. “I have enjoyed every moment of training him, although it has been slightly stressful at times. He’s the best that I have ever had and the best that I ever seen.
“He was laboring on the ground and not happy on it, but he was very relaxed throughout. I have probably got him too relaxed — it used to be the other way.
“In the end, he had plenty in hand,” the trainer summed up.”

Shanghai Bobby Clear Leader Among 2YO Males
By Avalyn Hunter

Posted: Friday, October 19, 2012 9:40 AM
While the standings in most of Thoroughbred racing’s other divisions are still in flux, the juvenile male division appears to have a clear leader, at least in the East. Now unbeaten in four starts, Starlight Racing’s Shanghai Bobby staked his claim to favoritism in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) with a visually impressive win in the Foxwoods Champagne Stakes (gr. I) on Oct. 6.
Bred in Kentucky by Stonehaven Steadings, Shanghai Bobby is one of 12 stakes winners—four of them of graded caliber—representing WinStar Farms stallion Harlan’s Holiday in 2012. Ranked 19th on the general sire list (as of Oct. 8), Harlan’s Holiday leads the juvenile sire list by earnings and number of stakes winners with four. To date, Harlan’s Holiday has sired 288 winners (51.2%) and 33 stakes winners (5.9%) from 563 foals of racing age. The best other than Shanghai Bobby have been grade I winners Majesticperfection and Into Mischief ; the latter-named horse, a freshman sire of 2012, is the sire of Champagne Stakes runner-up Goldencents.
Produced from the Affirmed mare Christmas in Aiken (a granddaughter of 1968 Hollywood Gold Cup heroine Princessnesian), Harlan’s Holiday is the leading runner and sire for the late Harlan, a son of Storm Cat whose chief victory came in the 1994 Vosburgh Stakes (gr. I) as a 5-year-old. As a late-maturing sprinter, Harlan was not well patronized by breeders, getting just 102 named foals before dying in 1999, but his six stakes winners included two very good middle-distance runners in Harlan’s Holiday and Menifee. While both were from mares that could reasonably be expected to contribute some stamina, both also probably benefited from the fact that Harlan was out of Country Romance, a stakes-winning daughter of the staying Halo.
A grade III winner as a juvenile, Harlan’s Holiday came into his own in the spring of 2002, winning the Florida Derby (gr. I) and the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I). He was made the favorite for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) off those efforts but finished seventh, and his only other win at 3 was in the Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II). At 4, Harlan’s Holiday won the Donn Handicap (gr. I) and was runner-up in both the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) and the Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I) before suffering a tendon injury while finishing last in the Saratoga Breeders’ Cup Handicap (gr. II). He entered stud at Airdrie Stud in 2004 and was second to Posse on the freshman sire list in 2007, third on the second-crop sire list in 2008, and fifth on the third-crop list in 2009.
Shanghai Bobby is the first foal of the stakes-winning Orientate mare Steelin’, who earned her black type by winning the 2008 Bangles and Beads Stakes at Fairplex as a 4-year-old. Orientate himself was of much higher class, winning the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) and five other stakes of 2002 on his way to a title as that year’s champion sprinter. At stud, Orientate has gotten plenty of winners (to date, 360 of his 643 foals of racing age) but has been more uneven in terms of quality. Somewhat surprisingly, his top earner has been the 2007 Alabama Stakes (gr. I) winner Lady Joanne, and he is also the sire of 2011 Sky Classic Stakes (gr. IIT) winner Kara’s Orientation, demonstrating his ability to get horses capable of staying 10 furlongs. But his other two grade/group I winners, 2008 Eclipse Award finalist Intangaroo and the Argentine-based Lady Sprinter, have been more what one might expect with their major successes coming at sprint distances. Shanghai Bobby is Orientate’s first graded winner as a broodmare sire.
Steelin’ was produced from the Carson City mare Steel Band, a full sister to 1996 Oak Leaf Stakes (gr. I) winner and multiple stakes producer City Band. As Carson City (a multiple graded stakes-winning sprinter) was produced from a daughter of 1976 French champion juvenile and 1977 English and French champion miler Blushing Groom, also the paternal grandsire of Orientate via his good sire son Mt. Livermore, Steelin’ is inbred 3×4 to Blushing Groom through lines that suggest high-class speed rather than stamina.
That might lead to suspicions that Shanghai Bobby may not want distances much greater than a mile, and Steel Band’s dam Wedding Band would tend to support that hypothesis. Sired by 1984 Remsen Stakes (gr. I) and Laurel Futurity (gr. I) winner Mighty Appealing (by Valid Appeal), who failed to train on at 3 despite his successes over routes at 2, Wedding Band was an unbeaten juvenile in four races over sprint distances at 2 but managed only one more win while racing through age 4. The closest influence for stamina along Shanghai Bobby’s female line is 1966 champion turf male Assagai, sire of Wedding Band’s dam Ring of Light.
Given that Harlan’s Holiday appeared to be a better horse at nine furlongs than at 10, Shanghai Bobby may find the 10 furlongs of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands a reach. Nonetheless, the colt has done everything asked of him to date without ever being pressed for his best, and that bodes well for a trip to Santa Anita Park and a shot at this year’s juvenile championship.

I wonder how Zenyatta and 12Z are.

Me too Marty. Please let’s have some current news on Zenny and PrinceZ. Need to keep them close to us.
Marty R / Colorado
MaryP NY, I hope there will be videos of them for the folks at the Zenyatta party at the Breeders Cup to see.
Does anyone know if the life sized painting of Zenyatta, “The Queen’s Dance” by Jaime Corum is still at Santa Anita? I haven’t heard anything about it since 12Z’s baby shower. Wouldn’t it be something if the painting and the life sized statue plus current videos were all at Santa Anita? I would be so overcome, I would probably forget who had just won the Ladies Classic.
I imagine Zenyatta’s present “life size” is quite a bit rounder than her statue or painting. Just a happy “mom to be”.

Please more pics and a few words about how she’s doing.
Pati- Can't wait for Breeders' Cup!!
I’m sure we will! Lanes End realizes that Zenyatta is a very popular girl. The openness and willingness to share her is what keeps many people in the game. The time to be secrative is long over, and there is no need to be. Zenyatta was treated like the Queen she is, and the owners have nothing to hide. I would expect lots of pictures and videos when the new baby arrives. Lanes End knows that they care for the royal family of racing. I’m sure they are just as excited for the foals’ futures as we are!

I agree…LE has done a masterful job keeping us involved with Zenny’s life.
The Mosses are also keenly aware of how much we love her. Her second foal will get lots of attention and so will Zenny. It’s amazing she now has 113,000 FB fans. How the public loves her!

Jockey Chantal Sutherland announced on Sunday her retirement from riding professionally to pursue other career opportunities. The popular jockey, perhaps best known as the former regular rider of multiple Grade 1 winner Game On Dude, released the following statement on her website while she was riding at Woodbine on Sunday for the final time:
Special Announcement from Chantal Sutherland
The moment has come where I have decided to announce my retirement from being a professional jockey; I almost can’t believe it myself. I’m not sad, but rather looking at another opportunity to begin a new chapter in my life. Looking ahead, I’m excited about new challenges and new opportunities that life has in store for me.
Horse racing has been my life for the past 14 years. I’ve reached many of the goals that I set for myself. I’ve lived out many of the dreams I had as a little girl, back when I was riding my pony, mucking stalls, feeding cows, aspiring to finally become a professional jockey and racing in stakes races on a worldwide stage. I’m so very blessed and grateful of the life that I have lived and career that I’ve had.
This past year or so has been so amazing it’s actually overwhelming having to put it to words. I crossed paths with a horse that happened to change my life. That horse is named Game On Dude and what a horse! He’s a soldier. Together we travelled the world. We won the Santa Anita Big Cap, Goodwood, almost won the Breeder’s Cup Classic; we won the San Antonio, Hollywood Gold Cup, and the Californian. We travelled to Dubai and raced in the world’s richest race, the Dubai Duty Free World Cup. As if that wasn’t enough, I was asked to be the poster girl for Santa Anita and Del Mar racetracks, and had my picture on billboards and magazine covers. I can’t even describe how flattering that is. Another honor for me was being asked to represent Canada and the USA in a worldwide jockey challenge in England, titled The Shergar Cup. To top it all off, I was also able to win on my brother’s horse “Awesome Fire” in the Whonder Where stakes. In an ironic twist of fate, my dad, who started me off in this crazy love affair with horses, is also the proud owner of the last racehorse I will ride.
In the last year I also met and married the man of my dreams. It’s been a whirlwind. I’ve never really had weekends or holidays off, I’ve always spent so much time racing or focused and preparing for racing. Racing takes so much determination, guts, and sacrifice to be on top. I once craved, lived, and breathed racing. I can honestly say now, I’m ready to slow down and enjoy my life. Maybe I’ll cut loose and have a cheeseburger or some pizza. Those types of indulgencies are not allowed, when you constantly have to monitor your weight. Racing is so much hard work and takes so much mental toughness; I can honestly say that I’ve had enough.
I will forever miss my fans. They were always giving me encouragement and making me feel special and successful. I’ve made so many memories and good friends along the way that I can’t even begin to describe. I want to give a special thanks to my agents, valets, and everyone else in this industry that has stood by me.
So now, with the support of my husband, family, and friends I am ending one chapter in my life and starting a new one. I’m excited about my future and the challenges it will bring. I enjoy working hard and striving to achieve goals, so who knows; maybe you will see me pop up somewhere soon.
XO’s
Chantal
Sutherland, 36, has amassed more than 930 victories and has banked earnings of $47,285,391 from a career began in 2000. Born Feb. 23, 1976 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Sutherland started her career at Woodbine. Her visibility on the national scene went to a new level after she rode in Southern California in 2007. Since then, she has marketed herself as one of the sport’s top female riders and has promoted horse racing through appearances in Vanity Fair, on the Conan O’Brien show, as the face of a Del Mar advertising campaign, and as a star on the Animal Planet docu-drama Jockeys.

Dear Sheena,
Glad to hear Frankie is still popular in the UK.
Loved Snow’s expression when he jumped off
Her, she knew she was the one that should
Get the attention. Can only hope Frankel will
Return to the track, like Zenny when Mr Moss retired
Her in 2009 and John Sherriffs was depressed.
Am sending lots of thoughts and prayers
To Sir Henry as Frankel has been his huge huge
Support in his war. Will look up Midday. Pretty sure
Ecxcelebrationis coming to BC, he is wonderful.
Wish Cirrus would come, I think he has so much
To say because he is French!!! Ha ha !!

Official announcement from Chantal…
http://www.paulickreport.com/news/the-biz/sutherland-says-goodbye-to-racing/
I feel that Mommy hood is amongst Mrs. Sutherland. I’m sure we’ll see her around maybe doing commentary like Gary Stevens? That would be a great way to stay in the “loop!” Whatever, her future plans are, I wish her nothing but the best!
Especially Horses / Southern California
Who is Chantal married to? Anyone we would know?
Keta
Especially Horses
Here is info
Sutherland would meet her match, not on the track, but on a blind date at L’Auberge Del Mar last August. Nine months later, she married businessman Dan Kruse, who runs his family’s meat processing company in Arcadia. The Huntington Beach couple share a love for speed (on the track for her; a ski boat for him). They also like to “putt about the harbor” in an electric boat. While Sutherland says her husband is “always up for a good time with friends,” he’s also a “homebody” who likes to go to bed early. That’s fine for Sutherland who says that by 9pm, during a grueling meet, “my pumpkin awaits.” Kruse, by the way, is more than a foot taller than Sutherland, and in a wonderful bit of irony, he’s also allergic to horses. Keta,
Wonder if the allergy to horses has something
To do with the retirement, or too many differences
That she is giving up hers. She said he wanted
A quick marriage. Wish her the best !!!

Thanks to all of you for your encouragement in the BC ticket contest! I took your advice about thinking positive, and now I have tickets for both days of the BC! I am so excited!
For those of you who went last year, what is the drill? I gather there’s a special section for us, then a party after the races on Friday. Any information would be helpful. I hope a lot of you won tickets and plan to attend!——–Happily, Martha Harriett in Oklahoma

Mucho Macho Man had a very good workout yesterday and will go to Santa Anita on the 30th. He seems to be getting stronger and more sturdy with each day. No more the gangling guy. Can’t wait to see him run in the Classic. I will be at Hoosier Park to lay my money down on him.
Pati- Can't wait for Breeders' Cup!!
My money is on him too! He’s my guy this year!

Hi Z-Peeps:
BIG CONGRATS to Drama Drama and Jon Court for finishing 3rd in yesterday’s race! What a nice come fro behind ride!!!! (Added some money for our team!)
Nice to see and hear Frankel going into retirement undefeated, Bobby must be beaming with pride at his namesake! I wish he was there to witness all his horse’s glory in person.
So sad to hear about “It’s Tricky’s” retirement, love that feisty lady! But happy to hear and see our beloved Paynter is doing so well.
@Karen G: Thanks for sharing you wonderful video of the statue unveiling, it was so beautiful!
@JudyB: Sounds like Papa Charlie is settled in and doing well and putting on some much needed weight on!
@Keta: Thanks for all your updates, post, and links about Paynter, they are so much appreciated.
@Terry C: Wishing you well on your second career, hope your getting into the groove again and settling in!
@Sign: Have they named 12Z yet? (Haven’t seen that questioned in awhile)!
@Marshall: Hope Reilly is being good and taking all his medicine.
To All: If I missed your Birthday or a special day I wish you all much happiness on these special days, and I am sorry if these well wishes are belated. Congrats to all that won special seats to the BC’s Zenyatta section, what a treat!
Only 2 more races for us to pull our team up! We are smart, we loves horses, we can do it! Think outside the box, go with your gut!!!!!

Dear Girl Saratoga:
So great to see a post from you. Hope you are doing well. Yes, Papa is settled in and very happy.
I am so sorry that I have been absolutely no help at all to our Zentastic Capping Team. Will keep trying the last two races. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear GirlSaratoga,
How good to hear from you! Hope all is well with you. I am pleased to report that Reilly is easy to medicate — just put the pill into something edible (currently using a small bit of Swiss cheese). As long as it is food, he is all for it!
Have a good week!
Woofs, wags and whinnies, too!

Dear Sheena,
Thoughts and prayers for Sir Henry
In his battle. A very very very special
Person and trainer.
UK commentators expressed concern
For him as Frankel has helped him face
The battle and fight the war.

Dear Z fans,
BB was upset with Execitive Privilege work Sunday
As Raphael took a hold of her trying to hold her back.
She came off the bit and quit running, like RD
And Mikey a mind of her own.

Dear Z fans,
HRTV video of Chantal’s announcement and what her hopes for the future are.
She is taking a couple of months off and it seems like having a normal family, hubby
life, plus issues on the track allowed her to make this decison.
Good luck Chantal !!

Keta
Sign,
Another great post!
We may never know exactly what prompted the retirement-especially at this time right before the Breeders Cup races.
I think that the recent suspension at Del Mar was a red flag that she was struggling.
Keta
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Dear Keta,
Agree, it was probably multifactorial, marriage, husband who is allergic to horses and may not like her so focused on them, loss of mount on GOD, desire to be
with family and friends in a less stuctured way, mentally and physically. And yes,
the suspension in UK, the Del Mar issue, just not interested anymore I guess.
Just hope she does not regret doing this as many women who do it not for themselves but for others. Most horse folks marry other horse folks for a reason, committment, time and enjoying the sport together and understanding its demands in all positions, trainer, jockey, exercise rider, hot walker, groom. It is really like a cult, like we both know. When I was riding, I was soo focused on the barn, horse issues, horse trips, parties with barn folks and equine vets. Just he commonality of owning, riding and enjoying the animals together.
