i asked question yesterday but it may have gotten lost….our friend Musketier races tomorrow…he is 10yr and still competitive….is there some reason why he was not considered for stud….stamina and durability….according to sites i checked he is intact?
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Carol:
I saw your question previously. Don’t know why Musketier’s owner chose to keep racing him as opposed to have him stand at stud. Might just be her preference. He’s listed owner is Stella Perdomo. Musketier’s had a very nice career both in Europe and in the States. Would like to know what Max, Sheena and Sign think about it. Hugs, JB
Max
Musketier just likes to race and his owner allows it. He also has a world class trainer who loves him.
http://www.facebook.com/Girl.Remembered.Horses.LindaBenson/posts/187225824685221
Ann NC
Max, thank you for sharing this w/ us. I had forgotten,he had such a sweet friend! That is just the best! Look at the love that friend has enjoyed….so cute.
Growing up, I hung my winter scarf, up beside my horse’s stall. He would nuzzle up against it and let the scarf fall over his head,so I left it there for him to play with and have a reminder that, I will return.
Horses are great!
Max
Ann. Although it could well be a breeding question, there is no doubt that Musketier has a special place at Woodbine. He stays in a pen outside of his trainer’s office so that he can see what is going on. The commentator at Woodbine said that Musketier is a very smart horse. He trained with Simmard and let Simmard win all the training sessions. He knows when it is the real race and only turns it on then. His owner also has a good win rate among the horses in her stable, nearly 70%.
Ann NC
Great story, Max.
Thanks ever so much for sharing it w/ us.
70%,wow,that is awesome. Someone can read a horse! I love it.
Good to see they got into the head of Musketier,he is a character.
Max, in our barn, when you enter and all horses are in stalls dining, only ONE will stick out his head. I call him the Hall Monitor! Musketier sounds like the Hall Monitor type.
Max
Ann. Her rate for win, second and third earnings was 67.64 % as of October 6, 2012. Her little horse Forte dei Marmi ridden by Johnny V was a solid third in the Canadian International last Sunday. Johnny V also usually rides Musketier. Apparently there are two rules with Musketier: don’t ever touch his teddies and do not disturb him when he’s eating.

Dear Carol,
Maybe breeder are not interested in his pedigree line.
Not all stallions are “breeding” quality, which is sad.
Just like IHA and Sunday Silence, the US seem to be fairly snobby with
their choices, right pedigree and right politically connected owner.
]Sad for the horses that could contribute to the gene pool and make
it stronger.
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
I remember when Sunday Silence was up for evaluation by breeder, Charlie Whittingham told the other owners, “no one was coming to see him like they
usually do”.
carol in utah/soon Arkansas
Well they blew it big time with Sunday Silence as he more than proved…sometimes diversity is a really good thing….nothing against Easy Goer….loved his daddy
Louise Castello
Never understood that at all! Somebody blew it for sure! To you experts here, was he a true black? Thanks!

Soo very true about Sunday Silence Carol and Louise.
We really missed the boat on his line and maybe we would
have a sounder American TB now with his influence ???

Dear Judy and Sheena,
Love that video, too. Watch it quite often and is great to have it reposted so
everyone can see it over and over.
I was just thinking, wonder if not too many Euro horses come to Santa Anita because of the firm turf they have there. Don’t Euros prefer good to soft ground for the best running, Sheena>
Kathy R.
Sign: Agree with you about the video – it’s one I turn to if I’m feeling very low – can now add Musketier and his bear to that list. The Europeans don’t like the hard tracks down here so maybe it’s the same story at Santa Anita?
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Yes, Kathy R.
The Euros are very aware of making sure their horses don’t get injured and harder ground causes more wear and tear.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear Kathy R,
Interesting that you have firm tracks, too.
Love Musketier, too. It is hard to take an old TB

Keeps them young. Jethro was 23 and still loving

Dear Sheena, Sign and Z Fans:
I love that video so much too. The clip of Ann Moss and 12 Z with Z looking on is just beautiful. Sheena, that’s amazing winning the Gold Cup four years in a row.
Our three year old horses have been experiencing so many injuries or illnesses that most of them don’t race beyond 4 or 5 years old. I think the money in breeding holds appeal also for some.
Will be visiting Papa Charlie again tomorrow. Angela went to the tack shop on

dear sign we prefer good going over here rather than soft although it all depends on the horse red rum always loved firm ground for his grand nationals he hated the rain in his face!!I would have loved to have good turf for frankel but it looks as if it will be soft going at ascot we had more rain last night but at least the sun is out today and feels somewhat milder hope it’s sunny with you!!hugs sheena
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Dear Sheen,
Yes, good going sounds ideal with a little give, but not too much. Soft would be OK, but
a little more work. Hope it is not heavy. It seems the trainers will send horses to different tracks depending on the conditions, the track shape and depth of dirt or turf.
Churchill downs in KY is a very tough track for strangers to come to and that is probably why Zenny had such a hard time in BC 2010. Blame the winner loved Churchill and won many times on it, Zenny had never run on that surface before. BC is at Santa Anita next year, too. Hope more Euros’ come even though it is firm. But one does need to consider that option.
Red Rum sounds like a character, don’t think I would like rain in my face and then
soft footing that is double hard to deal with. Not sure if you remember hearing
Zenny ran the BCC 2010 most of the way with her eyes closed, the fast boys were flinging dirt in her face, which had never happended to her before.
Keep us posted, will be watching the race definately.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
And it was dark, with the lights on, cold, and foggy as I recall. I still say it was her best race ever.
Max
It was the most exciting race that I have ever seen. She was incredible. Unforgettable courage and talent on display.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Yes, I loved it when others said they heard the doubters, who didn’t believe in her, and bet against her, just gasp & cheer when she nearly “did the impossible”, and then said she was the best horse in the field, without a doubt, they were won over by Zenyatta that day. THAT’s quite a win!
sue and tony
We were there and she was the best horse on the track that day…period. What trust she had in Mike to forge ahead at great speed with her eyes closed much of the time. Talk about heart…she has it in spades.
And yes, she made believers of thousands that day and still reigns supreme as the Queen of many hearts.
Joyce Groth
I loved Zenyatta from the first moment I saw her on TV. She brought excitment and love into my heart, Not only her style but her whole manner was beautiful. She never gave up and most of us could learn from her. There was no horse that compares to her. Love to the Queen!
Trisha-VA
OMG, just look at how beautiful Zenyatta is and how much love she has in her eyes for Ann. If we could see Ann’s eyes they would also have pure love in them looking at our Queen. Isn’t she magnificent? Regal and royal! Love, love, love , love her to the end of time
Some one at Lanes End please give her sweet nose a kiss for me.
thanks

Hope this is not the case – he may need the run.
Max
KathyR. You have to give credit to Amercain. He’s handsome and he knows how to get publicity.
Kathy R.
Max: Americain and his team are one of the great stories that come up around Melbourne Cup time down here – it’s just wonderful to hear the tales of the whole team and learn about the little quirks of some of the horses – I know that I get to the point at major races where I just want them all to travel safely and enjoy the run – this year it’s going to be really interesting with so many internationals coming down. So I’m hoping for a safe and happy carnival (but I do love the way Americain presents himself!).
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Dear Kathy R,
Soo glad Americain’s people are vested in a softer track for him.
That is the problem with have with dirt racing over here. It is very
hard on the bones, joints, and ligaments. Seems that is why we
have sooo many more injuries. Wishing you a happy and safe
carnival and a soft side turf for all of those who run !!!
Kathy R.
Sign: Firm tracks are an issue over here – the Melbourne Cup Spring Carnival is run into our summer – we’ve had a bit of a taste of early heat down in Victoria, with temperatures up into the mid thirties, and that coupled with a drying northerly wind is a real shocker. The tracks are watered, but there is a lot of controversy if it appears they are being adjusted to suit the European entrants.
sheena.davies(wales)
dear sign never realised when Z ran in the 2010 BC that she was’nt keen on the dirt bless her to think she could race like she did and it was dark it’s a wonder she knew where she going it makes her run all the more glorious!! it will be the 17th anniversary of red rum’s death tomorrow he’s buried at aintree I hope they send more of the euroes over to santa anita it sounds as if the track would suit them snow fairy next year maybe!!hugs sheena

Coming, but for the most part the Arc winners

Is more attractive financially.

signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Dear Sheena,
Being sooo very close to such a great horse is very special, but also difficult when
they are running their last race. We all really love him here as well and don’t think
we have had a stallion in the US last few years that can compare to him (stamina, speed, acceleration, soundness and stride). His leg action, coordination, stride and acceleration are very unique to him, hopefully he will pass it on to some of his progeny. Best of luck to him Saturday, it is going to be a tough one. Thanks for keeping us posed on the rain and turf status as that is going to have a really big impact on the race.
HeidiK (Vallejo, Ca) aka DinkyDiva
I don’t know if anyone else read this.
http://www.drf.com/news/breeders-cup-repole-citing-juvenile-lasix-ban-wont-send-any-horses-santa-anita
Here’s my take on it and I’ll keep it clean. Last year, Mike Repole said, point blank, that he would try and boycott the BC because, it wouldn’t consider being in his back yard in NY. Now, his excuse is, he can’t run his horses without Lasix and that the horses don’t do well going from the east coast to the west coast. I think and feel that he knows, he had no chance with his horses so, that is his excuse. It’s not like, the rule of running 2yr olds without lasix is new or, just popped up. Everyone knew that at the beginning of the year.
Another thing that I find kinda funny is the “flying from the east to the west.” How many times did we hear this when the Queen was running? East Coast fans and trainers wanted to have her flown out all over the place and yet, it’s difficult for the East to come West?
What do the Zenster’s think about this?
A side note… I won’t get into the Lasix debate on here, that’s more for a forum.
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
So true Heidi K.
Mike Repole always has an excuse or an issue when it comes to him and
his horses. Remember last year at the BC he told the Euro’s to come and
run on the dirt (when they are turf horses) and threatened then to see who wins !!!
I forget who had to prevent an international event, but someone did and got him to quiet down.
Just a character, I guess.
