Happy Monday!
Check out these new photos from Alys—we think they’re something special! We hope you’re all staying warm through this especially chilly weather. Zenyatta has the folks at Lane’s End watching out for her during the cold winter months, but that doesn’t mean she can’t enjoy frolicking in a blizzard or two!
Enjoy!

Karen Hurlbut
The blizzard photos are works of art. There are a couple that I would buy to add to my Z collection.

Yes, Team Zenyatta, these are special photos of our Queen and her ladies….all in waiting!!! What fun it is to be a horse at Lane’s End! Our Queen looks happy, healthy, and perfectly delighted by the snow.
Thank you, Alys, for taking these superb photos. Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Moss, Team Zenyatta, and Team Lane’s End for sharing with us!!!!
Zenyatta, know you are snug as a bug in a rug now….you have probably gone sleepy night night. Sweet dreams to you, dear Z.

Dear Marshall,
When is your birthday.
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Peggy,
I love all the groups, too; although, I am rather partial to the hounds and the sporting group. Terriers are quite special, too, and then of course, the working dogs, and . . .!
Face it, I love dogs! (and horses, too!)
My birthday is the 9th, and this year I will be officially old, as in Medicare! Funny, mostly I don’t feel that old as long as there is no mirror around!!
Take care and Lots of Hugs
Pati-College Girl
A number is only that; as long as the soul remains young and full of life, then one never truly ages. :-)
Happy Birthday a little early, just in case I’m not on and miss it accidentally.
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Pati,
Thanks bunches! Wishing you all the best for this semester — keep that positive attitude! We know how talented you are. :-)
Cheers and Hugs
Terry Crow
Always a pleasure to hear from you, Pati.

Dear Marshall
Happy Early Birthday. It’s not far away. I’m with ya I love all the horses dogs and cats.
I’m just a little bit behind you in age. Just a little. I don’t feel old either. We’ll be back here again to tell you happy birthday again on your special day.

Dear Marshall:
Happy, Happy Birthday on the 9th. I avoid mirrors as much as possible. Love and Hugs, JB
shirleeinindy
Judy, Love your remark about the mirrors. Every once in a while I catch a glimpse of that old lady who lives with me and wonder where she came from. In my heart, I feel 21!
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Judy B. and Shirlee,
Thanks so much for the good wishes and especially for the laughs!
Mirrors, and that old lady who shows up there, are problematic — who IS she and what is she doing in My mirror?
Lots of Love, Laughs and Hugs
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Maybe I missed something here – is that the 9th of February you’re talking about Marshall? Also the Birthday of our Canadian friend, Brenda S!
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Sandy,
Yes, I am a February girl. I do seem to remember that Brenda and I share a common birthday date(at least the month & day).
We are getting some snow here in NC tonight, and it’s about time! Looking lovely outside — maybe the dogs and I can walk in the snow tomorrow. I can hear ol’ Dean Martin singing “It’s a Marshmallow World in the Winter”!
Take care and hugs
Terry Crow
Dean Martin, now there is/was a guy who could sing. Unlike today’s “artists.”
Marshall (NC broad)
Terry C.,
Yessiree, Dino could surely croon a tune! He had a very high likability rating, too. I loved his variety show and those “roasts”, also. I think he had a fondness for horses, especially the Andalusians. As I have said before, I miss ol’ Dean( the rest of the Rat Pack, too). Those guys were really talented!
Cheers and Hugs

Thank you so much for these wonderful photos of our Winter Snow Queen and her friends. Brrrrrrr. But I can tell they are loving it.
Stay safe and warm sweet Zenyatta and friends.
Liz Carlin
What lovely photos of the Queen and her attendants. Thank you so much Alys, for sharing this wonderful mare with the world.
Marshall (NC broad)
Thanks very much, Alys! Love the photos, and I can live vicariously in that Marshmallow World with Queen Z and her ladies-in-waiting. I can almost taste the snowflakes on my tongue!
Many thanks to LE and the Mosses, too. You’re the very BEST!
Ann NC
Marshall, my sweet neighbor, we have marsmallows arriving today! Sing it, Dean. The milk and bread aisles are empty! Stay safe and warm.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Looks like wicked stuff heading your way Ann and Marshall. Hope you got your bread before the shelves were empty. Stay safe and warm.
Marshall (NC broad)
Thanks, Ann! Love it!!
Got marshmallows? Bring on the hot chocolate, and put on the Dean Martin LP!!
Remember records and albums? I’ve got Dino on vinyl somewhere upstairs near the stereo turntable which also plays 8 tracks(if you could find any that are intact)!
Take care and stay warm. Lots of Hugs

Now that’s music!!

Marshall-We may be the only ones who know what we are talking about.
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear TC GP,
You are very likely correct!
All the Best!

Terry, I know! Loved Dean Martin! My favorite!!!!!
Kelli Arnette
What a great thing, to see these beautiful girls enjoying the snow and living like horses are supposed to! Happy, healthy, able to go outside in the snow and play and not be cooped up in stalls 24/7. So much better for them mentally and physically to be able to exercise and socialize. And then to know that at the end of the day, they are most likely back in their cozy barn, being pampered and loved. They are so blessed to live there! Thanks for sharing them with the world.
Karen
Lovely, lovely photos of gorgeous Zenny and her gal pals. With my living in So. California those scenes make me shiver, but there is something magical about these photos.
On another note a name for 13Z popped into my head a short while ago. Since he seems quite special (as is Coz of course) I thought “Chozen” kind of fit him. Could be Chozen One but maybe too much like Cozmic One. Just musing here as I’m sure the Mosses have a fine name already in mind. Fun to think about though.
Thanks to Alys, Lane’s End and Team Z for keeping fans updated.

Happy Happy Birthday to you Penny Chenery. Love You Dearly
I wish you many more Happy Birthdays.
So wish I could come to the party in March and meet all of you. I do want to come to Virginia and see all of you and the farm. I just heard about that party.
Now you have to have another party for us that maybe don’t make it in March. Oh my.
Love, Love loved your horses. Secretariat and Riva. Know how much you loved them and especially Riva. Me Too
I know there with God now and although I wish so that they were here. That makes me Happy
Secretariat had a brother that was found and saved out West. Such a special beauty. He touched my heart so much reading about all he went through. May he rest in peace.

Oh my gosh. I just loved that. Loved the letters from Secretariat and Riva (Her first love. Just loved it. Thanks so much.
Terry Crow
Riva Ridge does not get enough credit for literally saving the farm. Seems to me he could have been at least mentioned in the Secretariat movie.
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Judy B.,
I loved this article from Steve Haskin! Thanks so much for posting it. Steve is one fine writer, and this brought tears to my eyes. Absolutely beautiful!
A very Happy Birthday to Penny Chenery and all the best for years to come!

Dear Sheena, Max, Ann and Z Family:
I have a new Charlie story for you. He’s been at it again. I have a cold and haven’t been to visit, but Angela and I stay in touch. She told me he has been pulling blankets off and having his blanket ripped and torn as usual. Not the best thing in this brutally cold whether we’ve been having.
Today, however, he outdid himself. It seems the electric fencing that runs along all the paddocks was out of commission in his paddock. Apparently, he figured this out and had a great deal of fun going along each section and pulling it down. Angela said she had to go out and put each section back. As she was doing this, Charlie was following her, supervising. I can just picture him checking out her work.
Luckily, today was in the low 40s, but windy. If I was there, it would have taken everything I could muster not to laugh. He’s a devil and oh, so smart. Love and Hugs, JB

JudyB. Charlie makes us all smile. I enjoy hearing of his adventures. Glad to know that your health is improving. This cold snap doesn’t help.
Terry Crow
Judy-Sorry to read that you have been ill. Remember, without you there would be no wonderful stories about Charlie.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy
Sounds like Charlie is really feeling good. Love to hear him feeling frisky like that.
So glad you are better.

Beautiful just beautiful, thank=you Alys for the wonderful photos, Our Big Girl looks so happy. When is her Foal due? I’am assuming she will have a late foal, probably late April or early May? You all must be having loads of fun with that freakish weather you are having. Try to stay warm, safe and healthy. Thank-You again for all that you do.

Speak to me of serenity, of treasures yet to be found, of peace that flows like a river. Tell me of tranquil places that no hand has marred, no storm has scarred. Give me visions of standing in sunlight or the feeling of spring mist against my cheek as I live and move and breathe. Show me paths that wind through wild lilies and beds of buttercups. Sing me songs like the mingled voices of wrens and meadowlarks, the lowing of gentle cows, the soft mother-call of a mare to her colt. Lead me past a glass-smooth pond where frogs croak of coming-out parties, their graduation from frisky tadpoles to squat green frogs. Find me a place in the sunlight to sit and think and listen to the sweet inner voice that says so quietly, “Peace, be still.”

Peace on earth.

@Marshall–you’re just a kid. I have the big 7-0 looming in a couple of years. Hard to believe.
@judy berube–love the Charlie story. They are so funny.

Dear Barbara W.,
Thanks! I don’t get called “a kid” very often anymore! You are correct about the passage of time — it IS hard to believe. Take care and Hugs
Dear Sandy,
I think we are all just kids as long as our “inner child” is alive and healthy — and there are no mirrors!

Rosemary McCauley
Below is an excerpt from a column in Horseplayer Monthly Magazine written by clocker Bruno DeJulio entitled, in part, “Some Horses Have It.” The Queen certainly has proven she STILL has it, evidenced by the fact that her name is still mentioned by commentators on the horse racing channels when discussing the great ones, past and present.
“Shirreffs would send two workmates to deal with Zenyatta, one would make her work early. She would go after that one into the turn, but if allowed to stay on course, she would put away that mate and idle and get nothing out of her work, so, Shirreffs, threw a second workmate to jump into the work at the quarter pole and make her focus again and work hard to the wire. Even that sometimes wasn’t enough as she would get lead in deep stretch and then idle out.
She had to chase and she had that will to win to chase as long as that target was in front of her. Even if she was getting tired and sore, and wanted to throw in the towel and get a warm bath and a bucket full of food, she chased.”
Ann NC
Thank you, Rosemary.

And that is what I call the heart and mind of a true champion…Zenyatta…my horse of a lifetime.
Terry Crow
I had two before Zenyatta, Swaps and Native Diver. I wouldn’t try to pick my favorite among them. If the three of them competed in a race, Z would probably win by passing them in the stretch. However, as a caveat, if Z were to run a match race against either she might lose because of the speed factor.
Max
Super intelligent horse. She always knew what was the right thing to do. Still does.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
I like that, Rosemary, but it got my attention also at the mention of Bruno DeJulio, because that’s a name I have heard numerous times from my brother, who knew him, and did clocking for him some years ago, at Hollywood Park. It is clear my brother, a long-time racing fan, thinks highly of DeJulio.

Dear Max Moosie has tweeted that Sam said he might start on the Flat once his ban has ended, not so says the Moose he hasn’t decided yet# Moosiesincharge!! That’s my boy you tell em’.Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. I saw that comment from Moosie and I’m happy about it. Moose can relax during the suspension and maybe chase the ladies. He can also get some gate training from Gary and start racing again in October. The only downside is that the flat season is mostly over by then. Free the Moose now. Neigh!
Max
Sheena. Read that Willie Mullins took blood tests and scoped The Fly to check him out before the Irish Hurdle. He was worried that The Fly might be out of sorts because of his poor work during that week and his sore hoof. Everything checked out medically, but they knew for sure that The Fly was okay and his old self because he took a bite out of Paul, his exercise rider. Forever coltish.

Dear Kathy A very beautiful post today am rereading it all the time! IPoor Ray has been bullied again over the way he talks I wuve the way he speaks!Have,nt these internet trolls got anything better to do. Gorgeous video of Hawley in the doghouse so to speak!Weather was cold with Joey yesterday he was cosy and warm. Am off to visit the rest of the furbabies now.Hugs to You, Kisses for the Puppy Pack. Sheena.Great to see our beautiful Snow Queen.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
I think the humans speaking for Ray absolutely nailed the way Ray and his bruddahs talk. That was a great Hawley video. Very sweet. Joey is so smart staying nice and warm in the offices. Boo and Buddy were in the OC. Man! I could’ve been there in about a half hour if I’d known. Paxilicious knows the reason for existence…it’s FOOD! Especially tuna! lol Zenyatta ‘s latest pics are just divine. She is indeed our Snow Queen and so loved by so many. Have a marvelous day. Hugs from me, kisses from The Pack. Kathy.

What a beautiful surprise to find Alys’s wonderful snow photos of the Queen this morning!! Starting my day off right with my heart full of more Zenyatta beauty and spirit to dwell on for the day. Dear Team Z, I am so grateful for your generosity in sharing the wondermare with those of us who love her from afar. She will always lift my heart and even though the pictures of the snow make me shiver at the thought of such cold, the beauty of Zenyatta overcomes that feeling and warms me through. Thank you!!!

Max, Hovis would have a field day with the subject of “Blueberry” I’m sure. Love and Hugs, JB

Just a thought about the “coat”….
My first notion was that it was on a newer resident who had not grown her own winter coat …
then I thought maybe it was on an “older” lady…..but being a tough old bird myself …I somehow doubt this …
What do you all think?
…..
read the Old Friends newsletter yesterday…seem the 3 new arrivals…aka “the California Boys” are learning about cold and snow…
…..
PACE….PACE….PACE….never too soon to pace

Fashionista, most likely, ha! I mean, if you share a pasture with, The Queen, you best be putting on your finest.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks as always to Alys for the beautiful pictures under obviously adverse circumstances (how do you hang onto the camera and work the controls when it’s snowing and your hands are freezing???).
I can assure you NOBODY is going outside here today. Temp may not make it above zero (despite the VERY deceptive sunshine) and wind chills something like -25. Virtually EVERY school in the area is closed, and the snow plow drivers also seem to be taking a day off while ignoring the overnight snow (or maybe the trucks are frozen or . . . . ?). I seem to remember a saying “too cold to snow” but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I know the situation extends far beyond the north coast here (and even worse along the eastern seaboard). Hope everyone has heat and electricity. Stay warm and safe.

What beautiful pictures! It’s always good to get out and stretch your legs no matter the weather. An added benefit is blowing the cobwebs out. Love and miss you, Zenyatta!
