Zenyatta Captures Thoroughbred Essence, Says Photographer Neil Latham
For fine art photographer Neil Latham, his mum was the most powerful and soulful woman he had ever encountered, so when he noticed similar qualities among grazing horses in upstate New York while grieving his mum’s passing, he did what came naturally: he took a few photographs.
The shots captivated Latham – there was strength yet fragility, athletic supremacy with graceful movement, determination yet peaceful confidence. He sensed his mother’s presence. He was struck by a compulsion to capture the essence and mystique of the Thoroughbred on film, honoring these magnificent animals and his mother at the same time.
Yet over thousands of miles, 100-plus horses, 6,000 images, and countless equipment trials and set rotations, it wasn’t until Latham met Zenyatta that the original objective crystalized for him.
The Challenge of Essence
In order to reveal the profound, transcendent element he sensed beneath the surface of these complex animals, Latham fine-tuned his artistic vision, resolved technical issues and sorted logistics. He convinced horse owners and trainers to let him photograph their multi-million-dollar racehorses, and crisscrossed the country loaded with equipment. He slept in the groom dorms at Saratoga Race Course and camped in a tent at Kentucky Horse Park. “I had to live it and wait for the special moments,” he says.
To achieve absolute perfection, Latham experimented with photographic equipment, light, exposure and large-scale sets. He built a portable studio with a black backdrop 20 feet tall and 36 feet wide that had to be rotated every 15 minutes to maintain the perfect angle to the sun. He also shot stampeding horses to capture intrinsic wildness, with the swirling dust giving a magical element.
In the process, Latham visited storied horse farms including Lane’s End, Gainesway, Stonestreet, Coolmore, Spendthrift, Ramsey, and Adena Springs. He photographed Thoroughbred legends such as A.P. Indy, Curlin, Tapit, Rachel Alexandra, Ghostzapper and American Pharoah. Black-and-white images revealed isolated musculature after a good breezing, architectural lines and curves, frenzied running, and more as he pushed the artistic limits of the subject matter. Some images nearly resemble equine versions of Robert Mapplethorpe photographs.
And Then There Was Zenyatta
Latham and his assistant were shooting in California when approval came in to photograph Zenyatta. Excited, they drove for 34 hours straight, swapping driving and sleeping, arriving at Lane’s End Farm just four hours before the start of the scheduled session.
“By that time I had shot more than 6,000 images of the best Thoroughbreds in the country, yet she was the most glorious creature I had ever seen,” says Latham. “She was nearly posing…she seemed to know her best position. She loved to be photographed and looked right at the lens. She was so alluring. I was fully aware that what I had in front of me was an iconic animal – a horse with soul. I felt a tremendous amount of joy photographing her and didn’t want to stop.”
When Latham asked a handler to take a photo of him with Zenyatta at the end of the session, something quite unexpected and extraordinary happened. “She tucked her head under my arm and just stayed there. A Thoroughbred would never do this. Then she tilted her head and looked straight at me. It was like she was talking to me through her eyes. I knew she understood people and felt emotion, and it seemed like she was in touch with my inner thoughts and feelings. This was a revelation…she connected with me on a different level. And I felt something I had never felt before with a horse,” he says.
As the moment ended, Latham knew it was the end of the journey, too. He had captured the essence of the Thoroughbred.
“All of my photos portrayed the power and dominance of the breed, but it wasn’t until Zenyatta that I was able to reveal the emotional, fragile side,” says Latham. “It was the missing piece. I felt the finality, and then a wave of sadness. I never wanted it to be over; it’s hard to stop an obsession. But it seemed like there was nothing else to say – it had all been said with Zenyatta.”
Zenyatta Forever
Latham’s iconic portrait of Zenyatta is currently featured in an exhibition, “Neil Latham: American Thoroughbred,” at Steven Kasher Gallery in New York City through July 30. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Address: 515 W. 26th St. in Chelsea. www.stevenkasher.com/artists/neil-latham.
Limited edition prints are available in a few sizes ranging up to 50 x 60 inches for maximum impact. They are numbered, finished on archival paper with museum framing, and signed by the artist.
Zenyatta is also a highlight of the limited edition fine art coffee table book “American Thoroughbred” by Neil Latham published by Twin Palms. It features 182 pages with 80 duotones, and is casebound and slipcased for quality presentation. It retails for $95 and is available from the publisher at https://twinpalms.com/books-artists/american-thoroughbred/ or from Amazon (ISBN: 978-1-936611-12-6). It can also be purchased at the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York through the end of July.
American Thoroughbred has developed quite a following on Instagram, see @neil_american_thoroughbred. The photographer’s website is www.neillatham.com.

When we finally deal with a problem that we have tolerated for ages, we look back and wonder why it took us so long to resolve it. What kept us glued to circumstances that gave us to comfort or that left us furious at times? We may never know exactly what caused us to stay in a particular situation or to avoid dealing with a problem for a long time, but we do know what helps us finally resolve things: the Spirit. Something in us changes when we turn to a path that is spiritually healing and as perfect as a garden in full bloom. The sweet aroma of this good life, a life in which we’ve moved away from something destructive toward something good, is called freedom. With the help of the Spirit, we can live this life of freedom and unlimited dimensions.
The evil one came and demanded half the people. The Great Spirit said, “No! I love them all too much.”

Dear Kathy.Great devotional.Empty nest syndrome over here Tegid fledged at 12.34pm I just missed the take off. It’s sooo sad to see the nest now with the family gone.He was home alone last night. The mini heatwave has arrived I read there is a lot of hot weather across the US this week I hope Zoe is well prepared for the high temps in Arizona.Mango is well on her way home now they were fortunate to be heading west because there were long queues east and mum would be bringing out the bad words again!Wimbley is getting ready to go on an abventure wiff the aliems. He was scared last night all alone and no snacks either!Dolly has some beautiful dresses on She is on instagram too.Larry has over 81,000 followers now Mother Theresa is visiting Angela Merkal(remind her who won the war!) and President Hollande(who is spending 1000’s on his hair) this week.Turkey is turning into an Islamic state by the look of things. The President is a tyrant.Yet another migrant crisis on our doorstep.Such sad news from Baton Rouge when is this killing going to stop??Plus you have the republic convention this week in Cleveland. Our Sky news reporter said he had never seen so many guns and that was just the police!!
Wonderful piece about Seattle Slew the Taylors were devoted to him.He was their baby
I posted a beautiful photo of Dessie parading with his beloved Janice on my timeline. He had the best connections too.Remember to turtle too hot for socks today!Have a great day.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Angel Holly,Nikko and Sugar.SheenaXOXO
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
It looks mighty strange for there to be no chicks in the nest. My, how fast they grow up! Stay cool, we will do the same here! Remember to drink a lot of water, don’t get dehydrated. i know Diane will take excellent care of Zoe. She will probably have on booties or shoes to protect her little paws. I know Mango will be glad to be back home! I’m looking forward to hearing about Wimbley’s abventure. I’m sure he’ll hold his own with the aliems! I’ll be sure to look at Dolly’s dresses. She is one stylish kitty! Congrats to Larry! Mother Theresa has jumped from the frying pan into the fire! Remind Angela who won the war, indeed! I’ll have to remember to look more closely at President Hollande’s hair! Hope he thinks it’s worth all that expense! Very worrisome what’s going on in Turkey. Yes, we were all so upset over Baton Rouge. Our country is really headed down the wrong path. Yes, lots of guns in Cleveland. I wonder how many will die??? I am anxious to read the Seattle Slew article. Kudos to the Taylors’ devotion! I will look for your post of Dessie. I will be turtling. Have a good day. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Angel Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXO

RIP Midnight Legend who was euthanised this morning at his longtime home Pitchall farm in Warwickshire at the age of 25.He was suffering from colic. He achieved almost cult status as a NH stallion.Racing both on the flat and jumps it was very unusual for a jumper not to be gelded and he has 17 mares in foal this season. His owners David and Kathleen are very upset. The end of an era.Much sympathy for them.Midnight lives on.Sheena

We are very worried about Ceri she fell off the larch perch last night and was on the ground for 10hours.It looks as if she has hurt her wing and hasn’t eaten for nearly 24hrs.She is getting very dehydrated. Please pray for her.The team are keeping a close eye on the situation.Sheena
Elizabeth in New Mexico
Dear Sheena,
Keeping Ceri in my prayers. Am sure they are doing what they can to help her. We have a wildlife sanctuary at our home. We have force-fed injured and also baby birds (that fell from their nest or were abandoned by their parents who either just left them or got injured). I feel fairly certain whoever is caring for Ceri knows that also. While holding them (very gently of course) we put an eyedropper down just enough to start the swallowing reflex (the eyedropper is filled with a liquid mix of various kinds of recipes depending upon what they normally eat). We almost always have to open their mouths for them. It can be difficult not to cause the fluid to go down into their lungs. We also keep babies or injured birds in a large box or small cage with a heat lamp (not directly on them, but high above them with a towel half-way over the box to shield their sensitive eyes from the light, the towel sits on top of the screen to keep them from escaping too early). This also gives them a sense of protection – kind of like ‘hiding’ from us humans. Usually quickly, they catch on that we are trying to help them. Sometimes wings heal on their own. Fixing wings are hard, but perhaps someone where Ceri is knows how. Birds may be able to live with an injured one, but it takes time for the wing to heal even a little. We’ll definitely keep her in our prayers.
We had a cockatiel who lived with us 26 years. He ‘ran’ the place! He even went camping with us in our camper (and loved it as much as we did). We will always miss him, but expect he’s waiting in Heaven (and having a grand time) until we arrive.
Judy B from Rhode Island
Dear Elizabeth:
So impressed with your knowledge and care of birds. God Bless. Love your description of “The Boss” Cockatiel too. Love and Hugs, JB
Elizabeth in New Mexico
Dear Judy,
Thank you for your kind remarks. I am always still learning new things. The older I get, the more I realize I don’t know, but that makes life so interesting. I put the info about bird feeding in case anyone on Zenny’s site comes across an abandoned chick or bird that fell from his (or her) nest. Usually, it happens when there is a storm. If one of the parents of the bird are still flying ‘down’ to feed them, we leave them alone unless they’re in peril of being eaten by another wild animal – then we put them back in the nest.
Our neighbor’s horses came over to the fence last evening just before sunset, so we got to give them treats – always a joy! Hope you have a wonderful Tuesday. with love, Elizabeth
Judy B from Rhode Island
Dear Elizabeth:
Sadly, I know the baby chicks can fall from the nest. Russ and I had a huge grape arbor in our backyard and the birds used to build their nests in it. We found little ones on the ground more than once and sometimes it was to late to save them. Always upset us.
Glad you got to feed the neighbors horses. So peaceful being around them. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Sheena,
So sorry to hear about Ceri’s fall and injury. Hope she is able to pull through and recover.
Power up, brave Ceri.

sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Elizabeth and Marshall.Trouble is Ceri is far too large to handle now.She is sitting on the edge of her nest with her head drooping.Someone had thought she might have been ill which caused her to fall in the first place. They have zoomed in with the cameras and there appears to be no injury and she was able to fly back to the nest eventually. We are all hope she will recover after a good night’s rest but I know the Dyfi will never allow her to suffer.Praying for her. Here is a link to their latest blog and a video of the fall.Sheena

A car moving at normal speed down a country road in summertime sends clouds of dust beneath the trees and across the fields. We have not had much rain lately, and heat builds quickly along these dirt and gravel roads. Can anything survive the heat and dust? Yes! There along the fence stands the answer: great bunches of bright sunflowers.
Certain species thrive in dry weather and heat. Dust does not faze their beauty. If these beautiful clusters of bright yellow were people, many of them would ask, “Why doesn’t someone do something about this drought?”
Yet other people don’t question and complain. They learn how to survive like the sunflowers. They put down deep roots to drink from underground moisture; they stand against the winds and grow where they are least apt to be disturbed. They lift up their beautiful faces to the sun and they never murmur or complain.
We preferred our own way of living. All we wanted was peace and to be left alone.
-Crazy Horse, Sioux

Reading all these comments on the incredible Zenyatta, gives a warmth to my soul. I often remember the time I photographed Z. Funny I never think about the photographs I took. I just remember the look we shared and the moment we had. I share the same love and passion. Neil

Dear Kathy. As you know the British complain a lot about the weather it’s our favourite topic of conversation. Now after a miserable cool June it is TOO hot!!How on earth you can bear this type of weather day in day out amazes me.No change at the Dyfi but something similar has happened to the chick at Manton Bay in Rutland. They assumed she had hurt her leg.Exactly like Ceri hunched shoulders and drooping head but she has eaten a little today. They must be keeping in touch with each other.Ceri is in the safest place, her nest and Tegid is keeping her company so we continue to pray.
The aliems have kidnapped Wimbley only his trabel hat remains plus there was bideo ebidence.I hope the aliems have a good supply of doughnuts. The mystery deepens.Mango will home today 4000 miles Judy has driven to get that coach!Zoe has over 30,000 “likes” now Well done!Pippa Middleton is engaged it’s going the poshest wedding since Kate’s.His name is James Matthews and he is 40.Ever the cynic I don’t see it lasting! There was a shooting in Spalding,Lincolnshire this (Hovisland)3 dead.Seems to be a domestic but last night’s attack in Bavaria was terrorist-related.Mother Theresa was in Wales yesterday morning visiting the Sennydd.Call me Dave looked a forlorn figure on the back benches during the Trident debate yesterday.Hope you have a good day.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Angel Holly,Nikko and Sugar.SheenaXOXO Good weather for The Royal Welsh show in Builth Wells this week
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
It’s hard with so many hot days in our summers. The older I get the more I dread it. The worst is when we have humidity, too. Really takes a toll on us! I’m very worried about poor little Ceri. I pray she recovers. Also the Manton Bay chick. What a shock that Wimbley is gone. Yes, hopefully wherever he is there are doughnuts! It looks like Mango and family could have found a coach closer to home! Maybe the people in FL gave them an amazing deal! I’m so proud of Zoe! That’s fabulous! You’re right, Pippa’s wedding will be something to behold. It may last depending on how wealthy James is! lol Sorry to hear of the shooting in Hovis’ part of the world. So sad of the attack in Bavaria. Mother Theresa is doing a lot of traveling! Poor call me Dave. Forlorn, indeed! Happy Tuesday to you. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Angel Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Sheena, please stop your constant reporting of world news, aka., Tennis, Birds, Pippa Middledton doings, terrorists attacks etc. This is Zenyatta’s website for news about her and her family and horses and it’s paid for by the Moss’s. You should have your own website for your other type of information that is not about Zenyatta or Horses. I appreciate those who are posting news and info. on Zenyatta, Zi, Coz, Rachel Valentina, Del Mar, Black Caviar’s filly, Noble Bird and so much more interesting Horse information.

Donna for a little perspective.
Do you see those ads on the right side and bottom of your screen? Those ads help off set the cost of this board. Do you know what the advertisers who pay Team Z and the Mosses to advertise on their website want to see? Traffic on the site.
They don’t care if that traffic is discussing horses, birds, world events or the local sock hop, they just want clicks and traffic.
Sheena has been a long time contributor to this board. There are a lot of people who enjoy reading the content she provides, ranging from updates on UK racing to the Osprey, to just another perspective on this topsy turvy world we live in. Sheena’s conversations and participation brings steady activity to this board, which is what Team Z wants to see and what they market to the advertisers paying money to advertise on this board.
Do I read everything Sheena posts? No. I have this wonderful little wheel in my mouse that allows me to scroll past that which doesn’t concern me. Sheena’s posts may not always interest me but they’re positive, inclusive and in the spirit of friendship and community, which IS what this board is about.

There is a bit more positive news about Ceri she is more alert and although not eating is soliciting for food. Her wing is still a worry though.Although very hot there has been a lovely breeze on the Dyfi.Hopefully she will take some fish tomorrow.T6 from Rutland is considerably better.Sheena
