Happy Monday!
Alys sent us a few new photos of Zenyatta and her Tapit colt out on a sunny day.
13Z has become quite the big boy! He had a visit with the blacksmith last week—watch the video below to see how well behaved he was.
Alys also caught Coz and Cooper Sawyer playing with a jolly ball.
In case you missed last week’s updates, we have recently added new content to the Photos and Videos sections. Head on over to see the new 13Z gallery and an especially unique video of Z.
Enjoy!

Have to get to bed early, we are having a number of warm days here in Wi. So my three grandkids, better known as the ” Rascals” (Do you remember those films!ha) will arrive early tomorrow. I thought Sunday was a day of rest! ha
Since second chiropractic treatment for Sir, he remains a big sweet boy!! Sir got stung by a black bee this past week while I was standing facing him. I think he thought it was a typical fly and swung his head to swat away; it stung him just above the soft part of his nose. (there is not much flesh there!) He did not like it and moved his head up and down and side to side. I am glad I was not in his way. Sir was not in the best mood for a short while, my poor boy. (I could tell otherwise by his ears. It was not my fault Sir!)
I wish the best for all of you! hugs, Sally
Sweet restful dreams Mama Z!!

Glad to hear that Sir is making progress Sally (except for the bee part – and what is a “black bee?” I’m sure I wouldn’t want to meet one).
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Sandy; I am not sure what a black bee is either but they are all black with a few white spots and they appear to be more confrontational. I have seen them a few times in the past around my house. They are not a wasp though I’m pretty sure about that.
I guess I better bring some spray out on Tues. if I see they have made a nest in Sirs stall. I have sent out an email to volunteers to help take care of this.
Have a great tomorrow! Sally B

Will Take Charge Nails Moreno in Travers
By Claire Novak, The Blood-Horse Updated: Saturday, August 24, 2013 9:10 PM
Willis Horton’s Will Take Charge finally got the big one, and did so at the expense of the country’s top 3-year-olds when he nosed out Moreno to win the $1 million Travers Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course Aug. 24 (VIDEO).
The blaze-faced chestnut, a son of Unbridled’s Song out of multiple grade I winner Take Charge Lady, finished ahead of Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Orb, who was third, while Belmont Stakes (gr. I) and Jim Dandy Stake

At least Mike got him home safely. There is always another day and race. It does look as if most of these 3 year olds plan to continue to race next year. Really hope so as we have seen too many young horses retire to stud and not make the grade. It is good for the fans and racing to keep these guys around for another year. Muchie and Fort Larned and others are still around as 5 year olds.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Can someone please explain what “off the bridle” means???
Bluegrass Girl
Sandy
When a horse is off the bridle, he has quit pulling or driving forward.
You want a racehorse to be on the bridle, pulling, galloping on,
Sometimes you will read that he “spit the bit” and you want a horse to be “on the bit.” when racing
Hope that helps. BGG.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks BGG – wonder what got to him?? He had been right up there!
Terry Crow
Sandy-Verrazano ran a very disappointing trace. He now has run two bad races in his life. this one and the Kentucky Derby. Since both races were at a mile and a quarter. it must be concluded at he does not like the distance. I would suspect that, if her goes to the BC, he will be entered in the mile.

Louise Castello
I meant to thank you for the article about Lexington earlier. Very interesting. Thanks!
Max
Louise. The accompanying article was very good too. Traveller was a “difficult” horse, which is why he is so admired. It’s not easy to be laid back as an equine when you are dodging cannon fire. Very brave too was Traveller. These war horses were remarkable. I also admire Marengo, Napoleon’s gray war horse. Marengo was also very brave.
Louise Castello
Max, I love those war horses too! I don’t know anything about Marengo, but now I’m going to research. I learn so much from you guys. Thanks!
Max
Louise. Napoleon had about 50 horses in his stable. Marengo was said to be his favorite, but he also often rode a mare called Desiree into battle. He loved his horses, most of them being Arabians. The Duke of Wellington who defeated the French at Waterloo was also a horse lover. His favorite horse was Copenhagen. There is a famous statue of the Duke with him in London. A few years ago BBC had a program of the two horses writing challenging letters to each other. Very good fun.

Thanks Louise. So handsome, those two. Traveler is buried on the campus of Washington and Lee. Evidently it was love at first sight when Lee saw that horse.
“The stable where he lived his last days, directly connected to the Lee House on campus, traditionally stands with its doors left open; this is said to allow his spirit to wander freely.”
Max, thanks for the info.

Does anyone know if Judy the Beauty was badly injured yesterday? She was a late scratch in the Ballerina (Race 9, Saratoga) after having flipped in the starting gate. Her jockey was okay (Lezcano, I think).
I do hope she is okay — hate it whenever a horse flips over in the gate. Very scary.
Please post if you know about Judy the Beauty. Hugs

What amazes me is that Ebby knocked some of her teeth out as did Judy and they let Ebby race. She didn’t flip but had some injuries. Was it the same track?

Yep, but I think that they learned their lesson after Ebby, and quickly scratched Judy.

Am I just imagining things or do Zenyatta and 13Z have some hair shaved off their right front legs just above the knee. If so, would anyone know why that would be? Those areas just don’t look like shadows to me.
Got my first points in the “Capping” contest for betting Orb to come in third. Not sure if I should change my bet for the Pacific Classic or keep it. I’m trying to give credit to the horse for knowing what to do, too, and not just the jockey. Still contemplating.

Found this excerpt from an article in the Paulick Report on the Ballerina.
Judy the Beauty flipped over at the starting gate and was a late scratch.
“Other than losing a tooth, she’s fine,” said trainer Wesley Ward, adding that Judy the Beauty could make her next start in the Grade 2 Presque Isle Masters on September 9 at Presque Isle Downs.

According to the Bloodhorse Pedigree Analysis, Kitten’s Joy does well with Roberto line mares. How exciting would it be to see a Kitten’s Joy – Zenyatta offspring race in Europe.
Pedigree Analysis: The Kittens Keep Coming
While Storm Cat-line mares have produced six of Kitten’s Joy’s stakes winners, some credit should go to Red Ransom’s sire Roberto, who is inbred 4×4 in Stephanie’s Kitten. In fact, 10 of Kitten’s Joy’s stakes winners are inbred to Roberto, including three from Roberto-line mares.
Roberto’s sire Hail to Reason has an even wider influence with the Kitten, who has five stakes winners out of Halo-line mares, including three out of mares by Saint Ballado. Two others are out of the same mare who is herself inbred to Halo. Hail to Reason may be working because Kitten’s Joy has three crosses of Hail to Reason’s sire Turn-to, one through Roberto, and the others through El Prado, with lines back to Bold Reason and Sir Gaylord.

2013 King’s Bishop Stakes Published on Aug 24, 2013
Capo Bastone, a colt that had long failed to tap his potential, finally displayed his talent with a roaring finish to capture the $500,000 Foxwoods King’s Bishop Stakes (gr. I) going away at odds of 28-1 Aug. 24 at Saratoga Race Course.
Mentor Cane, who had opened up a four-length advantage on the pack mid-stretch and looked a certain winner, settled for second, with Central Banker third. Forty Tales,
the 5-2 favorite in the field of 3-year-olds, finished fourth.

Cappers and my racing buddies yesterday was very fun. I watched so many races with my FB friends. We had a blast all afternoon. Then the bad weather hit again. Just after the Travers I had to jump outside. I found my pool equipment under water. Water everywhere I tried to push it with a broom and then a shovel. None of that worked at all. I prayed for it to stop raining and came back in the house. A wet rat was what I was. I thought I should take photos for insurance and went back out to grab a few. I was unhappy that my horse and my beloved jockey did so badly yesterday until I went outside and saw all the water. We have had more rain that I can remember for 15 years. I got up today and spent 3 hours digging a 20 foot long ditch. That was very hard. I have a new respect for anyone that has to work like that. I called for help but nobody came so I ask the Lord to give me strength and he did. It’s going to start raining anytime now. I hope my ditch works.
FB buddies I will check in around 7:15est so we can watch the race together again. I hope I am dry !
love Sue

So sorry to hear this Sue. My sister and her hubby also live in Florida (north of Orlando). I know they’ve had a lot of rain, but maybe worse where you are (not sure what area that is). I didn’t do well yesterday either in the cappin’ contest. Hope I make a better pick today.

I hope you didn’t pick Dullahan like I did.

Dear Sue,
I sure hope you ditch does the job you need it to do! Sorry you are having those problems.
I didn’t do well capping yesterday, thought a longshot might finish in the money but didn’t pick the right one!!
Loved Mentor Cane’s effort and Will Take Charge ran a great one!!
Does anyone know what happened to Declan’s Warrior? He was eased up and walked off but that’s all I know. Please post any info you may have.

Dear Sue:
I hope the rain stops and you can get things sorted out. Wow, I really admire you for completing that ditch by yourself. Love and Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Belated congrats to the three ‘cappers “in the money” yesterday. The minute the race was over I had to leave to go to an Indians game (complete with a win and fireworks) so didn’t get home until the wee hours. Good thing I had something to distract me from my poor assessment of Verrazano’s ability to pull it off. He looked SO good at the beginning, and I haven’t heard any reasonable explanation of what happened to him at the last moment. Moreno certainly put in a surprise performance, and I guess WTC got rewarded for at least having run in all three of the triple crown races. Now it’s on to the Pacific Classic today – hope many of us do better this time :-)
Sue Fl CPRC
Amen to that Sandy
Yes congrats to those that won yesterday.
I didn’t pick RK today but I will be happy if he wins and my horse finishes at least 3rd.
I would love to see this old guy win and hope that his owner retires him after this year.
Sue
HeidiK, Vallejo,Ca (bride to be)
I thought Mentor Cane had it too but, the other horse grew some rockets in the last few strides. At least this time, Mentor Cane was focused and ran straight. Congrats to the MC crew! He’ll put it all together soon. I’m sure he gained a lot of experience from that race.
Now, the Pacific Classic is a hole different thing. I had Game on Dude on my win ticket but, had to re-think it and changed it to Dullahan, since, it’s poly. Also, the jockey change. I want the Dude to win but, my gut says, not today.
Good luck to my fellow cappers! Horses and Jockeys, come home safe and sound.
Good luck to Royal Delta today as well.

Dear Sandy “Off the Bridle” usually means a horse is tired and reduces his/her effort. Is always good winning “on the bridle”hugs Sheena
Max
Sandy. Frankel was very good at getting most other horses off the bridle, which can be seen at the 2000 Guineas. The race was over at the half way point. The others more or less gave up. Secretariat’s Belmont is the most classic example in recent history. He was essentially racing the clock. Amazing Red.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks to you both. He did just seem to give up, but I’ve watched the replay several times, and I can’t see the moment where it happened. He appeared to be doing well so I can’t figure why he let those other horses put him into a horse funk :-(.
Terry Crow
He must have realized how muchcuh distance there was still left. Very disappointing effort.
Terry Crow
that should be much.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Zsters,
Well I was a miserable bust yesterday, Had my exacta on Verrazano and Orb, at least Orb came in 3rd, but what happened to Verrazano, I sure hope he wasn’t hurt. I hope I can at least make some money on the Classic for the team. Congrats to all who did well you’re keeping our heads above water.

Travers: Will Take Charge, Moreno could square off in Pa. Derby
Posted on August 25, 2013 by Jennie Rees Courier-Journal
Following up on Saturday’s $1 million Travers Stakes:
The top four finishers – with less than a length separating victorious Will Take Charge from fourth-place Palace Malice – all came out of Saturday’s $1 million Travers Stakes in fine fashion.
Moreno, who led every stride except the last jump, is headed to the $1 million Pennsylvania. That well could be Will Take Charge’s next stop, though trainer D. Wayne Lukas mentioned the Jockey Club Gold Cup as a possibility, adding that he’d probably prefer to keep the colt against his age group.
Kentucky Derby winner Orb, third in his first start in 77 days, is targeting Belmont’s Gold Cup. Trainer Todd Pletcher did not mention any race for Palace Malice (or seventh-place beaten favorite Verrazano) when questioned by reporters Sunday morning, though the Gold Cup would seem to make sense for the Belmont Stakes winner.
