Happy Monday!
Alys sent us a few new photos of Zenyatta and her Tapit colt out on a sunny day.
13Z has become quite the big boy! He had a visit with the blacksmith last week—watch the video below to see how well behaved he was.
Alys also caught Coz and Cooper Sawyer playing with a jolly ball.
In case you missed last week’s updates, we have recently added new content to the Photos and Videos sections. Head on over to see the new 13Z gallery and an especially unique video of Z.
Enjoy!

@Judy….you are braver than me….after changing my show bet last week to the exacta…both of which were right ….and getting less for the exacta than I would have for the show bet….I give up….going to play a couple of long shots to show ….but a couple that have a tendancy to close fast
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Carol:
Yes, last week’s Exacta was co-favorites. I’m in the same situation in the Travers as I Exacta Boxed Verrazano and Palice Malice. In the Pacific Classic I did use long shot Richard’s Kid with GOD. If I’m off the board again, I will play a long shot to show next week just as you are this week. I would like to get it right to help the team.
Good luck to you and all the Zentastics. Love and Hugs, JB

Hovis is depressed as he has lost his Aunty rider. He’s looking for a replacement and for love from riding companionship. Too bad we’re so far away. He’ll never lose us.
Happy Friday to Sheena and all other Hovis fans. Have a good start to the Travers weekend. Let all horses come home safe and happy, and all their fans enjoy the races.

Thanks as always to Sheena via Max. This is such a sad turn of events for our Hovis. None of us would ever dump him. I really could have used a glossary this week, and I’m afraid to ask. If anyone wants to explain some of the . . . well . . . . unusual terms or abbreviations, feel free :-)
Terry Crow
Max-You are right. If he were ours, he would never have to sort through the personals to find a suitable riding companion. His story about his mum getting wet while giving him a bath is rather amusing.

Even though Hovis is sad and depressed, he still had me laughing out loud. I hope he words his advert carefully. Hopefully, he’ll find someone just right.

So sad for poor Hovis. As smart and beautiful as he is, I am sure someone will be with him soon.
Tomorrow is the big day. The Travers. I am still undecided between Orb and Palace Malice. Think I will go with PM and Mike. That dratted Johnny V is riding Verrazano who is the favorite. Johnny V on a horse whose name begins with a V??? Fate? Am going to take a flyer on long shot War Dancer simply because I love that name.
Above all, Safe trip to everyone.

Dear Shirlee:
Good luck with your picks. I did go with JV and Verrazano and Mikey and Palace Malice.
If I was choosing a long shot, I agree with you. War Dancer is the son of War Front. Would have been a good name for Z’s new baby if it wasn’t already taken. Love and Hugs, JB

Poor , Hovis. I have just the girls for you, unfortunately there is too much water separating us. Maybe the rich uncle would fly us over for a, Hovis Love Fest! The Cross Fit training would come in handy w/ a big guy like you! Anyway…….
Good luck, my Cappin Friends. I’m going for an Ole Chestnut kind of weekend,ha!
I believe that, Mad Moose is staging a racing revolt via his twitter account?Hmmmm?
Terry Crow
Ann-Great story. At least Saratoga has the intelligence not to mess with the Goose. Hollywood Park, many years ago, had a young woman who went by the name of The Goose Girl, who would travel out in her goose shaped boat in the lakes in the infield and feed the birds. I do not know why this tradition was discontinued. Maybe the track will bring it back one more time in December before the wrecking ball makes everything moot.

Susy Palacios
Hi, we woulk like to visit Z in october. We are a couple from Uruguay where we have a small farm and we are very very fond of the great Z. Is it possible to plan a visit to Lane’s End to see her?
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Susy,
As far as I know, the general public is not allowed to visit Z (or any other broodmare, for that matter) while they are with foal. Too much danger of infection, etc. Only a few people have been able to visit Z since her retirement, and that was by very special arrangement or having won a contest or something of that sort. You can visit the stallions at Lane’s End (Thursdays only) but not the mares and foals.

Local take: 144th Travers field the best in years?
By Nathan Mayberg Register-Star Posted: Friday, August 23, 2013
SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Saturday, the break-from-reality horse racing spectacle of a carnival known as the Saratoga Race Course will celebrate the highlight of its summer meet with the 144th Travers Stakes on the 150th anniversary of the track’s first meet.
Ask somebody to pinpoint the last time a Travers field was this good, and good luck getting an answer. Trainers Todd Pletcher and Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey — two of the best in the business — were left empty of words when posed with the question this week.
The pair will be sending three of the top choices in Saturday’s $1 million Travers, with Shug’s Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Pletcher’s tandem of Belmont Stakes victor Palice Malice and Haskell winner Verrazano.

Dear Kathy R, I forgot to say that I think Canberra would be a great place to meet for a Civil War discussion! That would be a dream come true. Alas, I don’t think I can manage it quite yet. LOL. Maybe some day!
Kathy R.
Dear Louise: Maybe we all need to work out somewhere in between (unless we all win a lottery). Hugs, KathyR.
Louise Castello
Dear Kathy R., I’m hoping for the lottery! I think it is wonderful that you came here to see Civil War sites. I never realized people from other parts of the world would be that interested, but I love that some must be. I sure am interested in Australia and know nothing but the basics, but I intend to learn a lot more. It is on my bucket list to visit one day. I’m fascinated by everything Australian and, no offense to American men, I think Australian men are the sexiest in the world! LOL! It’s true, though. They seem to be very manly men. I love Australia!
Kathy R.
Dear Louise:
My bloke is blushing at your comments, as reported by me. Hugs, KathyR.

Louise. And they are all called Bruce.

Louise-Can’t argue the points you have made. I, too, would love to visit Australia. The trip would have to be carefully planned because of the size of the country, bigger than the U.S. Just for the record, I am more interested in the women than the men.

Dear Sandy What help did you need with Hovis’ unusual terms? hugs Sheena
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I’m not asking in public!!! (watch for an email :-)
vicki
Poor Hovis! He needs internet access to help in his search for some companionship. If only he had his own television show perhaps we could enjoy him on BBC America. Something like the BACHELOR or the Real Clydesdales of England.
Hope all run safe and sound in the Travers. I also hope to see the Big Three in the Breeders Cup Classic. It would be nice for a change if the leading three year olds made it safte and sound through the racing season.
Love to Zenny, the Boys and all the lovely members of Zenyatta Nation.

Too cute! That would be something. I would watch any show starring Hovis.

Ooooooh! A TV show staring Hovis! Brilliant idea (Karen, are you listening??)
Terry Crow
Agree with those sentiments. Might also mean that a lot of good three-year-olds will compete in the BC.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Hi Zensters,
I am way behind and trying to catch up again. This weekend is our biggest Humane Society fund raiser. We have a huge rummage sale where ANYONE can drop off rummage. I spent all day yesterday sorting and pricing (my feet were killing me) and all day today at the checkout, wrapping and taking payments…….yikes I’m actually all talked out, ha, ha. We always make a lot of money for the puppies and kitties on this one, I think last year it was $6,000.00. Everyone works their butts off and is exhausted by Sunday.
I had to get home and catch up on the blog and get my bets in for the two races this weekend…….hope I’m not too brain dead to get it right. I won’t embarass myself by telling you my bet……..unless I win, of course, then you’ll think I’m a genius, ha. ha. NOT.
Love and hugs to my gorgeous Zen and those two handsome studs. Auntie Sue

It’s so good to be back on the blog! I’m soooo far behind due to computer troubles, but I think everything is working OK now. (Knock on wood) I love the picture of Z and 13Z. He looks like he’s imitating her every move. So cute. And the videos are great. Coz has turned out to be such a handsome fellow. He’s too cute with his ball.
Best of luck to all the handicappers this weekend. It’s hard enough to pick one race, but now we have to pick two! I chickened out and picked both Palace Malice and Kettle Corn to place. I don’t have the nerve to pick one to win or box an exacta!
@Terry Crow – I completely agree with your comments about Alydar. It was so heartbreaking when he died and I never thought it was an accident. I can’t bring myself to read Wild Ride. It’s just too upsetting. I saw the infamous Alydar stall when I was at Calumet with Dawn and Shari this past June. I’m hoping that Brad Kelly can turn things around. I think they’re on the right track.
Terry Crow
A Wild Ride ends with the new owner’s winning bid. As i said, it does not delve deeply into the death of Alydar, just the financial wheeling and dealing which brought Calumet down. There is much more info about Alydar on the internet as much of the stuff came out after the book was written.

Rosario hurt on Friday….will he ride Orb in Travers?
Friday, August 23, 2013 by:Tim Wilkin, staff writer Times-Union
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Dinny Phipps, who co-owns Kentucky Derby winner Orb with his cousin, Stuart Janney, hopes he doesn’t have to start calling jockeys Saturday morning. He hopes that Joel Rosario, who has ridden Orb in eight of his 10 starts, will be on board when the colt takes his place in the starting gate for the $1 million Travers Stakes.
Rosario was injured during Friday’s card at the Spa when his mount, Casual Elegance, tossed the rider at the finish line of the seventh race. Rosario lay motionless on the inner turf course for several minutes before getting up. He was limping when he was taken back to the jockey’s room via golf cart.
According to his agent, Ron Anderson, Rosario has a broken bone in his left foot after x-rays were taken at Saratoga Hospital. Rosario is scheduled to see a doctor on Saturday to find out if he can ride the Spa card
