Happy Monday!
Alys sent us a few new photos of Zenyatta and her Tapit colt out on a sunny day.
13Z has become quite the big boy! He had a visit with the blacksmith last week—watch the video below to see how well behaved he was.
Alys also caught Coz and Cooper Sawyer playing with a jolly ball.
In case you missed last week’s updates, we have recently added new content to the Photos and Videos sections. Head on over to see the new 13Z gallery and an especially unique video of Z.
Enjoy!

Dear Sandy Am sorry I didn’t email you the pics of baby Bruce.Glad you got to see them.Max makes a good point in that we cant have our Royal Family becoming ordinary. I feel our beloved Queen has got it just right modernising the monarchy yet holding fast to the traditional way of life.Did you know Yeats was an entire horse when he won his 4th Gold cup in a row at Royal Ascot? A wonderful feat of training by Aidan O’Brien.hugs Sheena
@pati Will be keeping Gus in my thoughts and prayers.Hope they get the funds for his treatment.hugs sheena
Max
Sheena. Your Queen usually smiles in public only at horses and corgis, a very wise monarch indeed. She has also never given an interview.
Terry Crow
That is the wisest decision she ever made.

@Kathy R-Sorry, I was behind in reading the posts and just came across yours concerning the Civil War battlefields that you have visited. You certainly have seen a variety of them. Interesting that you refer to Sharpsburg. The Confederates always referred to a battle site by the name of the nearest town and the Union named them after the nearest body of water. That particular battle, which was one of the turning points of the war, is usually called Antietam, which is a creek near where the battle was fought. I have a particular admiration for Confederate General James Longstreet, who was badly wounded during the battle of the Wilderness by his own men, much in the same manner of Stonewall Jackson. Jackson, by the way, got his nickname at the Battle of Bull Run, or Manassas. Another Confederate general saw him standing by his troops and said, “Look, there’s Jackson standing like a stone wall. There are those who say that this was not meant to be a compliment. Inflection of voice, etc. could put a completely different spin on it. That general was killed during the battle so no one could ask him what he really meant. Great to find another who has an interest in this subject in the group.
Louise Castello
Terry, thanks.. I love all your Civil War stories, I am a huge Civil War geek and trying to get some collections going. I love, love anything Civil War. Alas, I have only visited Vicksburg, so far, but I was literally enthralled and never wanted to leave while there. Wonderful place to visit. My husband literally had to drag me away!
Terry Crow
Louise-Great to hear from another Civil War buff. At one time I owned several Civil War items but I no longer have them. I once had a hand written letter from Robert E. Lee addressed to D. H. Hill and some items signed by James Longstreet and George Custer. At one time I was trying to accumulate all of the presidential signatures. Everyone knows that Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln are very expensive and hard to obtain but. surprisingly, since collectors like to have autographs of presidents while they were in office, the most difficult one to get is William Henry Harrison, who was president for only about 30 days before he died. He signed a few things while in office, but they are extremely expensive, so I gave up on the idea. I am currently reading a book about the Vicksburg campaign and you are fortunate to have visited that site It was one of only two battles that involved a siege, Petersburg being the other. I am always anxious to “talk” to a Civil War fancier.
Kathy R.
Dear Terry and Louise:
My friends say that I drift from the Confederate to the Union side depending on what book I’m reading – probably true. With my latest supplies, I’m up to 238, but who’s counting when there ‘s just so much to learn. Always find the Bull Run campaign a difficult one to get my head around – even after walking the field, I still find it confusing. But then again, so did a lot of those involved. Just hope the developers can be kept well away from such significant places of American history. I mean, the French can do it with their battlefields. Terry, is your Vicksburg by Ballard or Groom? Cheers, KathyR.
Max
Civil War peeps. Add me to the list. I took military history courses in college and the Civil War study involved a field visit to Gettysburg. I actually ran Pickett’s charge. Loved that entire visit. Also went to Richmond, Virginia and ate grits for the first time. Keep the discussion going. Love hearing your views. I’m like Kathy R. Keep switching sides, but I really like the South and their generals. Love Lee.
Ann NC
Dan is proud of you, Max for tasting the Grits! Shrimp and Grits, now you are talking.
D. H. Hill had a son, DH Hill Jr., who was also a scholar. The library on our local college campus was named after the , Jr. and it is haunted!
Terry Crow
@Kathy R, Max and Ann–I am always pleased to participate in a discussion of the Civil War. Ann knows my story about lecturing a class about Civil War battle flags so I won’t bore her by repeating it. Kathy R-That is a remarkable number of books. My book about Vicksburg is by Jeff Shaara, who is an excellent writer on any subject concerning the Civil War. His father Michael wrote what is the definitive novel about Gettysburg, The Killer Angels, a must read for anyone interested in the subject matter. The film Gettysburg was based on the novel. The Shaaras books are what I would call historical fiction, putting words in the mouths of historical figures while accurately describing the scenes around them. Another interesting set of books were written by Newt Gingrich, the what if type. In his trio of books, the END of the war was marked by the Gettysburg address. You are right about the developers. Disney was actually going to develop Bill Run but the uproar was so great they decided not to. The Confederate General that made the comments about Jackson was Bernard Bee, who dies during the battle. Max-You have first hand knowledge of the difficulties facing the soldiers involved in Pickett’s Charge. I have never visited Richmond. That is on my bucket list. I did visit Monticello, and should have gone to Richmond at that time but I didn’t. A lot of people, myself included, feel that Pickett’s charge should actually have been known as Longstreet’s charge as he was in charge of the operation. If Longstreet were still alive I am sure he would say that the way it is known is OK with him. Ann-D.H. Hill is one of my favorite Civil Wat generals. He had a style that did not always mesh with his superiors. He also MAY have been responsible for the stalemate fight at Sharpsburg as it has been speculated that it was his copy of the battle plan that fell into Union hands. Even knowing the plan, George McClellan could not actually beat Lee, but gained enough of a standoff that Lincoln felt he could issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Thanks, all. I greatly enjoyed your responses. My apologies to those who may think that we are taking up too much time and space discussing non horse issues.
Ann NC

Dear Civil War Buffs,
I too share your enthusiasm for Civil War history. I have visited several battlefields, reading books on the subject and watching documentaries and movies. While mom and I were on this last trip, we stopped at Antietam. I purchased a couple of DVDs that I have not had a chance to watch yet. Two were about the battle and one was about the Horses of Gettysburg. When I walked out of the gift shop and started across the hill I was met by individuals in character as Clara Barton, with some soldiers and officers joining her. It was very interesting talking to them. I would love to see her Glen Echo, MD home. Dawn
Kathy R.
Dear Dawn, Judy, Louise, Terry and Max:
I’m beginning to think talking about the Civil war is a bad thing. I’m going to get really, really jealous hearing all these terrific stories – knowing that I can’t take part in such activities. Rats! Cheers, KathyR.
Max
KathyR. Vicarious living is almost as good as the real thing and less stressful travel wise. You can visit when you have a chance? I’ve also been to sites of the English Civil War. There is or was a group in England who restaged those battles in full costume. Never saw it except on tv.
Terry Crow
@Dawn-Would ,love to hear about your experiences. @Kathy R-I don’t know much about Australian history except for the basics. Were there any such conflicts in your country? @Max-As I have told Ann, vicarious living is about all I have left as I am well past my use by date.
Terry Crow
We would welcome your comments, dear lady.
Terry Crow
Judy-That comment should have been directed to you. I have not yet fully developed my method of responding to posts.
Kathy R.
Dear Terry:
Maybe it was the way it was taught, but found Australian history a crushing bore – we spent our time learning about early exploration, and drawing maps (and I’m a lousy artist). Just how my teachers were able to make the stories of exploration boring I’ll never know, but my story is a common one for my generation. My sisters only learnt British history. The conflict with the Aboriginal people is the nearest we have to “war” in this country and there is still a lot of controversy about how much of that history is fact or fiction. But every Australian knows about our involvement in the Gallipoli (Turkey, World War I) campaign, and Anzac day, which commemorates that battle is considered by many to be our national day. Cheers. KathyR.

Judy B,
Thanks for your concern, I did post results on last blog and then carried it over to this one, I think on page 2. She’s doing well, pain management is the key with Percoset and ice packs, but she’s a tough little chicken like her mom and will bounce right back. I credit all the wonderful people on the blog with prayers and well wishes for the good results. I told her before she went in there were many, many people praying for her and she said “be sure to thanks them all for me” So again I say “THANK YOU”and I owe you one
By the way you and I are such COZ lovers, don’t you get the biggest kick out of him with that jolly ball? I watched it at least 5 times and wind up laughing my head off. love and hugs sue

Dear Arlene:
Turns out I decided I was not up to the over five hour bus trip in the heat. It can get very, very hot and humid at Saratoga, which I have a real problem with now due to Lupus. I’m just so glad I got to visit the Spa often in years past.
Also, as my little poodle girl, Lola Mae, needed some unexpected dental surgery at the vet (11 teeth extracted) which was expensive, things worked out for the best.
Hope you are having a pleasant Summer. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max Thanks for the video of the juddmonte. I hope toronado will get some R&R he had a tough race in the sussex at Goodwood. I expect DOW will come over for the Breeders Cup.Our Queen just loves her horses and dogs!!! hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Toro was really fantastic in the Sussex. Maybe he had not yet recovered or Moose has told him that coming in last still guarantees a good dinner? Ballydoyle usually sends their horses to the Breeders’ Cup. Is DOW thinking of taking on Dan? I’d advise against it. If Dan stays well, he may just eat DOW’s breakfast and then kick butt. Uncle Johnny also seems to have a lock on winning with Dan. Dan however doesn’t seem to care who’s with him in the saddle. He just nails it.

Dear Max Am not sure what race DOW would enter might be a longer distance than the mile that’s Dan’s race isn’t it?Remember Moonlight Cloud is in good form this year!!!Nos Da Sheena
Max
Sheena. You may be right about DOW. O’Brien usually has entries in all of the turf races and the BCC. He wins often. Do you recall when Tiznow took down Galileo? Love Tiz. He is something else. He’s a very big horse like Big D and the Queen. Looks like he could be a brother of Zenyatta with a similar blaze. Moonlight Cloud did not do so well last year against Dan, ending up nearly last. She had almost upset Black Caviar at Ascot, but Nelly like a true champion fought her off. Fillies might easily fall under the spell of the handsome rogue Dan. He’s all about winning.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Hope DOW does come. He doesn’t have to win- it just would be super to see him run!
Max
Sandy. The win today by DOW was a real upset. His last 3 races have not been winners. Lost to Toro by a wide margin in the Sussex. He came in 4th to Moonlight Cloud only 10 days ago. We therefore have to give him some credit for running well today so soon after that loss. Although he runs longer races than Dan, he’s not in Dan’s league. Dan is the top turf horse in the world, and likely to remain so if he stays well. Unlike most other horses, Dan is winning on hand rides. He’s getting the job done.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Yes (sigh) – I read about his less than spectacular outings since his big win at Royal Ascot. Hope maybe he has turned things around now. I just like the notion of “War Front winners” and the promise that may hold for our next baby.
Max
Sandy. A Z baby with War Front is altogether another story.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I hope you are envisioning a good result! :-)
Max
Sandy. The Queen does everything perfectly. I am certain that she will pass on her talent to her boys. She has probably already taught them both many important lessons to be used when they are on the track, or anywhere. You can tell by looking at them that they are special guys.
Terry Crow
I remember Tiznow quite well. His second win in the BC classic was quite an upset. Always ran well in big races. Agree completely with your opinion of Wise Dan. Am looking forward to his race at Woodbine.
Max
TC. Tiznow is a horse with his own way of doing things such as only working when he wanted to and not warming up before a race. Nijinsky was like that too. If he did not want to do something, he got a faraway look in his eye and ignored everything.
Terry Crow
Max-Thanks for this info. When I am at the track, I always wait to see if a horse warms up before I bet.

UPDATE FROM THE FIRE LINES—Things are looking up today! They are saying that the fire is now 30 5 contained and they have let more people back into their homes. I took the forst of my cats home this morning before work and will pick up the other two this evening and we will sleep in our own bed tonight!! it will take a few more days to get everything back home from Judy’s. She was so wonderful to put up with us!! Not sure when Barnaby will get back to East Fork–know he will be happy to see all of this grass again–he loves having a “snack bar” all day,as does Traveller!!
Today’s fire bulletin said the number of firefighters is now down to about 1700,from a high of 1835 yesterday!!They seem to feel that the danger to Ketchum and Sun Valley is over,as the fire is moving north and they are establishing lines over the ridge from town that they feel will keep it behing the adjoining hills. Croy CFanyon, near Hailey still keeps giving them trouble. They say that this fire is not “obeying the rules” in that it is very unpredictable in the way it is spreading. Many firefighters that locals have talked to say that it is the hardest fire that they have ever fought!! It is likely that,as it moves north through the Sawtooth National Forest,it will not actually go out until it snows!!
Will keep you all updated as I can–know that Barnaby and Traveller are safe and that I have been telling them about all of your prayers, good wishes and messages!! When I tell thm things from all of you, they look at me so intently it seems that they understand every word!!Their own Coll New Shoes Man,Tom Riney,is coming to see them on Friday to give them their bi-monthly foot trim–I know they will be glad to see him. He is SO good with them-and they are both really good FOR him–they seem to understand that he is helping them and want to co-operate.
Will send some money tomorrow for the feed bill at the rescue–glad so many want to help.
@ Dawn Conrad-Will try to call you this weekend and catch up–so glad you had such a wonderful trip–should say,TRIPS!! Yippee!!
Sweet dreams all, especially to Z,Coz and Little Big Red!!

So glad for an update Sue – especially one with some good news. I’m sure you and the cats will be very glad to be back in your own digs tonight. Sending good thoughts and prayers that the fire moves as expected and the control continues to increase. Take very good care of yourself, and please keep up the bulletins when you can. Hugs!

Dear Sue,
Our prayers on your behalf continue to be answered. I know it will feel so good to you and your fur babies to once more be in your own home and cuddle in bed. Dear Sue: So pleased to hear things are improving in your neck of the woods. Will keep up the prayers for you and yours, and for the firefighters – those unpredictable blazes are a devil to deal with. We had a nasty one spark up at Broome, way up the West Australian coast and needed evacuation from a top tourist resort. Fires make me really nervous of summer. St Nicholas Abbey ‘Best He Has Been’
By Claire Novak, The Blood-Horse Updated: Wednesday, August 21, 2013 3:15 PM
Nearly one month since St Nicholas Abbey underwent major surgery to repair a life-threatening fracture of his right foreleg, Coolmore reported Aug. 21 that the multiple grade/group I winner is “the best he has been” since sustaining the injury.
“The veterinary interns who are with him 24/7 described him today as the best he has been, and the veterinary surgeons are equally happy,” Coolmore reported on its website. “Recent radiographs look good, his temperature remains normal, and his white blood-cell count is good.”

The Allenton parade went so well, we loved the two little mini’s leading ahead of our Cedar Valley Horse Sanctuary banner and then us. I made a boo boo along the way though. (the last 1/4 of the parade) All the children wanted to touch these mini’s, but we still had to continue in the parade. I volunteered to pick up any poop and apparently I missed the only poop that one of them did and one person out of hundreds called up to complain about it to our major Cedar Community of our Horse Sanctuary. So I guess I made a booboo not picking up the poo poo!! We were told it was bad PR but if you could have seen all these childrens smiling faces as well as their parents I think it was worth it.
I still was sad that I blew it. Oh well, unto our Animal Awareness Day Sept 15th!!
That is when Tinker, the mini will be there. hugs, Sally B

Dear Sally, high hoof on your successful parade and blessings to you for volunteering.
As to the person who “booed” your one little booboo, I say pooh on them! If they had any real community spirit, they would have pitched in with the picking-up instead of raining on your parade. Hugz!

Dear Sally,
I ditto everthing Trina just said. I so applaude you for all you have done. Hugs and blessings to you.

Dear Sally B:
You should be so proud of yourself for all you do for these beloved horses.
When you are around horses, you learn to expect and accept all that goes along with them. You do the best you can and you can’t please everybody all of the time.
I have a “special” pair of shoes that I wear only to the farm. It goes with the territory. Love and Hugs, JB

Some people have too much time on their hands Sally. High hoof to you and your group. Hope the appearance of your group stirred a lot of interest for your next event.

Dear Zsters, thank you for your responses; it has me feeling better. Now I don’t feel as this one complaint has “pooped on our parade!” You are special!

Your story about the parade made my think about an incident I considered to be funny but all may not agree. About 20 years back I was watching the Rose Parade and saw a member of a band slip on a horse pie. He or she was playing his or her instrument and did not notice what was there as he or she was looking straight ahead. I laughed so hard I fell off the couch. After I picked myself up from the floor, I noticed a lot of disapproving eyes staring at me. I vowed to watch the reply of the parade so I could see it again but it was censored. I find things funny that others would not.

TC. I’m still laughing about the horse ventriloquist.

Hero Horse Honoured:
Okay, I know this little piece I found in my tidying exercise is a bit “old”, but it’s a good story:
“The Black Saturday heroics of former racehorse and clerk of the course horse Fabish will be celebrated at Healesville picnic races today, with a race named in his honour. A year ago fire roared through Narbethong, 21km from Healesville, and across Tarnpirr Farm, a 200ha horse property owned by trainer Cliff Brown and his father Don. The 14-year old grey gelding prepared by trainer Mick Price in his racing career, saved seven yearlings in an outer paddock. Fabish guided his charges to a safe area and after the fire passed, old Fabish led them home”. Herald Sun, 7 Feb. 2010.
No wonder we celebrate the majesty of the horse. Cheers, KathyR.

Rodway – half brother to the mighty Makybe Diva came in 5th in his first start (1400m) at Sale in Victoria. May have been put off by the antics of another first starter: she threw the jock and bolted back to the mounting enclosure. Looked mighty pleased with herself, I must say. But now it’s back to the drawing board for the Moody stable. Has been a day for escapees down here – one took off at Hawkesbury, near Sydney. Jumped the fences and was gone. They suspect it was headed back to its stable. I only hope its safe. Cheers, KathyR.

KathyR. It’s never good as you know when horses do that because bad things can happen. But I have to say that I admire their spirit for breaking free and being bold.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks for the update KathyR. I’m sure all of the commotion was not easy for a new runner to handle, and there are better things to come for Rodway. Maybe he can have a dip in the sea and wash away the memory of this first attempt!

Sheena. Very good news of Nick. He’s operating to get better.
Heard that Hannon Jr cannot explain what happened to Toro. He described Toro as “mercurical”. That’s what they say about Moosie too. Toro might have had a chat with Moose, although they are stabled in different places. Better check their iPads.
