Happy Monday!
Alys sent us a few new photos of Zenyatta and her Tapit colt out on a sunny day.
13Z has become quite the big boy! He had a visit with the blacksmith last week—watch the video below to see how well behaved he was.
Alys also caught Coz and Cooper Sawyer playing with a jolly ball.
In case you missed last week’s updates, we have recently added new content to the Photos and Videos sections. Head on over to see the new 13Z gallery and an especially unique video of Z.
Enjoy!

Here’s one of the best videos I have ever seen about a horse that I know all of you horse lovers will really appreciate. I came upon it by accident and often wonder just how many others like it are out there. It is the story of Cloudy’s Knight. You might remember him from the 2009 Breeders Cup where as a 9 year old he came within just a nose of winning the Marathon.

Thank you Anita. This is truly a wonderful story of a successful racehorse, his owners and team. They handled him with care and love and it continues on for the rest of his life. Cloudy is quite a horse!!

Dear Anita:
Thank you so very much for sharing this video.
You are so right; it’s the best video I’ve ever seen showing the great love of a team for their horse. This story is the epitome of what any one could wish for a horse. Cloudy had the best treatment during his racing life and is equally loved in his second career. What a gorgeous Chestnut boy. Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
This is a wonderful video and could easily have been made into a feature film. Judy-I know you can find this. How much money did Cloudy earn during his first career?
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Anita,
Thank you so much for posting this! It is one of the best videos that I have ever seen. What a gorgeous big chestnut Cloudy’s Knight is and what heart. Great owners and trainers, as well as all others who contributed so much to his health and soundness.
Love this story!! A fantastic ride for all those connected to this magnificent horse.
Truly a love story. Hugs

“Pippa” and “Jimmy” news.
Andrew Bensley has just spoken with BCS Thoroughbreds Simon Marshall regarding Belle Couture (Pippa) and “Jimmy” , the still un-named brother to Nelly. Pippa has been out for 6 weeks at trainer Danny O’Briens’ farm at Barwon Heads, near Geelong. She’s growing into a big strong long filly according to Simon, looking very much like the Helsinge family. Danny will give her all the time she needs to develop, as Peter Moody did with Nelly. She’ll come back in on 1 September for a jump out. The owners of “Jimmy” are starting to toss names around, but nothing so far. John Hawkes (trainer) says the horse is also going well. He’s taking him to his Flemington (Melbourne) stable for some work, and will then do his usual thing of Melbourne-Sydney-Melbourne to get the horse used to the left and right handed way of racing. Simon said both horses are similar in attitude – very alert, only need to be shown something once to know how to behave. “Jimmy” is unlikely to run before Christmas, but that decision is being left to Team Hawkes. Cheers, KathyR.
Max
KathyR. Still hoping that they name him Bruce Caviar, or just Bruce.

Dear Kathy Good to hear news about “Pippa” Why don’t they name him “Bruce”??? Anything on Nelly and her “first date” yet?Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Excellent comment. The world needs more Bruces. I miss hearing about Black Caviar. She was always interesting with that custom pressure suit, her modeling career, her product line and all those lovelorn admirers.
Kathy R.
Dear Sheena and Max:
Unlike when the information on who the First Dad was going to be slipped out, the news on just when a mating takes place will be very, very carefully controlled. She is after all with Darley and they are an extremely professional outfit. I don’t think we’ll hear anything until a confirmation she is “with foal”. And I’m happy with that. Nice to have a bit of suspense – sort of like the night before Christmas when I was a kid. You can still purchase sweatshirts, hoodies etc. from the Black Caviar website – and the purchase price is not that bad now that the Aussie dollar has been going south. Cheers, KathyR. PS: No news on Voila Ici though and I guess Nelly’s goat is feeling a bit neglected too.
Max
KathyR. Darley US is a bit different publicity wise. Bernie immediately puts out press releases whenever any of his foals wins. A great deal of the press release is always about Bernie. I get a good laugh from this. Love Bernie and Coz.

Oh My GOODNESS Z FAMILY!
I’M MEETING PAYNTER ON SUNDAY!! I AM SO EXCITED! :-D
I’m going to have to take an extra battery, and the BIG memory card! My camera won’t turn off the entire day! My college group is going to the races, touring the backstretch, and seeing the Museum on site there. I love college, but it’s so much work until then. Oh mah gah, I have three papers due by early next week, and it’s only the third day! But, I have a project horse assigned to me for the semester for me to take care of, and I have to pick out already. I want either Solo, who is a giant, grey QH gelding with the most soulful eyes, or Oliver; the chestnut TB Cross that is afraid of his own shadow. I made friends with Oliver already, and I think he likes me. I rode Solo at the riding evaluations for lessons, and then later team placement, and we got along great. I am so torn.
Aside from that, how is everyone? I’m doing my best to keep up with the Fantasy Capper, and I’m doing a lot better than last year. I’m glad my pedigree work and devotion to watching the races has paid off. (Though the latter wasn’t exactly a chore. hehe)
Pati-Caz Girl
Pardon the typos; I’m really excited.

Congrats Pati. You deserve it. Get all the details. And enjoy yourself. Give Paynter a carrot or a peppermint from us. Hoping that he wins. Power up Paynter.

I believe that MMM has a good chance in this race. It is the first time in a long while that he has ran in two races in the same month. That, plus two good works looks like he is coming to his best. He can stalk the lone speed of Paynter, unless Alpha decides to go. Then he will lay third.
shirleeinindy
Thanks Terry. Most are not giving him any respect. I don’t know if he might not do better at 1-1/4 miles. Everyone tends to forget he ran a good second in the Classic last year.

Pati,
I’m very excited for you!! I love Saratoga so much and what a thrill it will be to see Paynter and other wonderful horses and people. Just to walk around and tour the backstretch and take in the history that Is Saratoga. Enjoy!

Comeback Kid” Paynter faces six in G1 Woodward
By Jenny Kellner NYRA News Saratoga | 08/28/2013 05:57 PM ET
A year ago, no one was sure if Paynter would survive, much less make it back
to the races.
He did.
When he finally did return, no one was sure if he could be nearly as good
as he once was.
He is.
On Saturday at Saratoga Race Course, the 4-year-old colt continues his amazing comeback when he faces six of the top older horses in the country including Successful Dan, Fort Larned and Flat Out in the 60th running of the Grade 1, $750,000 Woodward.

BGG,
Thank you for all you share with all of us. Even though I dont post much anymore, due to time restraints, I still read as much as possible.
This race has me in a quite a dilemma. I have always loved Fort Larned, he is my boy, and I have always loved Paynter. Dont know who to route for, so I will hope for a nose to nose finish. May the best horse win and safe trips for all, always.

Fort Larned has unfortunately scratched, so I guess the choice got easier…too bad it had to be in that way.

@Abigail – I’m so sorry to hear about your mom. That has got to be so tough. My mom just turned 76 and sometimes I think about what I would do if anything happened to her. My heart goes out to you.
@Trina – Thank you so much for sharing MLK’s I Have a Dream Speech and the Joyce Kilmer poem Trees. What a beautiful poem. I must confess that I don’t know much about poetry, but the older I get the more appreciate any kind of literature. It may sound weird, but my favorite poem has always been Edgar Allan Poe’s Annabell Lee.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
My favorite poem I ever taught was “Lee” by Stephen Vincent Benet, part of a longer work.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
I had to look that up, Barbara. I never read that poem in school, perhaps because I’m from the North. I was only familiar with his tension-filled courtroom short story The Devil and Daniel Webster.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Oh, Debbie, I’m so glad you mentioned Poe! I LOVE his Annabel Lee! My favorite lines:
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee; —
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love —
I and my Annabel Lee —
….
For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee…
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
I truly liked Poe’s Annebelle Lee!!

Dear Terry, I am sorry to be so late getting back to you. I’ve been gone most of the day and haven’t had time to think! I’m so interested in what your friend says about the movie. It’s wonderful that Morgan Freeman is such a nice sounding guy because that’s how I always imagined him to be. It would have been a huge disappointment if he had not been nice! Tomorrow I will have more questions, LOL, I’m just too tired to ask tonight. Thank you so, so much for taking the time to answer questions. I really appreciate it!

Abilgail; I wish the best days for your mom and you. I speak from experience. My mom bless her heart had macular degeneration so for the last several years she could not see but periferal vision, had a walker because of osterporis and osteo arthritis, finely in a scooter, but she hung on, just enjoyed the fact that me and my sisters were there for her; we gave her laughs!! Laughter will always be the best medicine!!
My adult sons are now telling us to vacation because we may not live that much longer. I do not think old!! All I need to do is get my request together in this event, then go on working with the horses, playing and play with my BF who I have not seen for a couple months!! We all need to stop and smell the roses.. even though I’d rather smell the ones at the Derby!!
hugs, Sally B

Urgent Notice: Potential Dangers of Exposure to Horse Hair
This is a public service announcement. In a press release today, the National Institute of Health has announced the discovery of a potentially dangerous substance in the hair of horses. This substance, called “amobacter equuii” has been linked with the following symptoms in female humans:
reluctance to cook
reluctance to perform housework
reluctance to wear anything but boots
reluctance to work except in support of a horse
physical craving for contact with horses (may be an addiction)
Beware! If you come in contact with a female human infected by this substance, be prepared to talk about horses for hours on end.
Additional Surgeon General’s Warning: Horses are expensive, addictive, and may impair the ability to use common sense.

Sheena. What has happened to Tom Queally? He was the rider for Warren Place but they had Abdullah horses, such as Bullet Train, Frankel, Noble Mission etc. while they were and are training. Joyeuse is there too. Doyle will ride all Juddmonte horses?
Cityscape is a nice horse. Wise Dan however showed him his heels last year at Woodbine. Woodbine is the largest turf course in North America, named after Northern Dancer’s owner, EP Taylor. Dan was brutally awesome in that race, or as Uncle Johnny said, “a freak.” Go Dan.

Anita-Thanks so much for posting this. Very impressive pedigree with well-known names. Links to several champions there. I wonder why the decision was made to geld him? Hi All!
With all the talk about golden retrievers I just have to brag about my very red dog, Brook (Champion Kiralyi Kicsi Peros Brook) who is now 3. Took her to meet her intended husband for an evening of romance….and romance they did! Puppies in 9 weeks!!!! I am so excited! I love having a litter of little vizslas running around! Keeps me young! The little darlings are due on Oct. 30 and will be ready to go home on Christmas Day…..luckily I have plenty of homes lined up for them so there will be no impulse “Christmas Puppy” buyers!
One pup will for sure be nick-named Pumpkin…..
