Happy Monday!
Alys sent us a few new photos of Zenyatta and her Tapit colt out on a sunny day.
13Z has become quite the big boy! He had a visit with the blacksmith last week—watch the video below to see how well behaved he was.
Alys also caught Coz and Cooper Sawyer playing with a jolly ball.
In case you missed last week’s updates, we have recently added new content to the Photos and Videos sections. Head on over to see the new 13Z gallery and an especially unique video of Z.
Enjoy!

No Nay Never to be spelled (translation: Rested)
Posted by: AAP+ Filled in: Australian Horse Racing | 28/8/2013 at 12:42pm
Unbeaten juvenile No Nay Never is unlikely to run again this year as his American trainer Wesley Ward targets a return to Royal Ascot in 2014.
No Nay Never broke the two-year-old track record with a brilliant display in the Norfolk Stakes.
The juvenile then returned to Europe and carried the Coolmore colours for the first time to clinch Group One honours in the Prix Morny at Deauville earlier this month.
With next summer’s St James’s Palace Stakes top of the colt’s agenda, Ward feels he would benefit from a break before being brought back into training later in the year in preparation for a three-year-old campaign.
“He is in beautiful shape and came back from Deauville looking absolutely fantastic,” Ward said.

Excerpt from article
Scholars have long debated Lee’s decision to press a frontal assault at Gettysburg. How could such an exceptional commander, expert in reading terrain, fail to recognize the attack would be a disaster? The traditional explanation, favored in particular by Lee admirers, is that his underling, Gen. James Longstreet, failed to properly execute Lee’s orders and marched his men sideways while Union forces massed to repel a major Confederate assault. “Lee’s wondering, ‘Where is Longstreet and why is he dithering?’” Knowles says.

BGG-Thanks so much for posting this. This woman is rather exceptional and remarkable. I have long held the views about Lee and Longstreet that she espouses as a result of her research. I have always considered Longstreet to have been a commander who cared about his men and who did not believe in frontal assaults. There was a lot of butt covering after the Civil War by commanders on the Confederate side and Longstreet was often the center of controversy.

Terry
It was amazing to turn back the clock to the battlefield at that
moment in time. To see what Robert E. Lee was seeing and what
Longstreet was seeing. Not exactly what historians have been
writing & reporting. BGG
Terry Crow
BGG-For those familiar with the battle of Gettysburg we are talking about the offensive that was thwarted by Colonel Chamberlain’s boys at Little Round Top. Longstreet wanted to go around and take the position from behind. He was ordered to make a frontal assault. The only officer who could give an order to Longstreet was Lee. The assault known as Pickett’s charge came the next day. I wonder what Ms. Knowles thinks of that particular move?

Palace Malice has options for next start
By Sports Network Miami Herald Posted on Tuesday, 08.27.13
Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice came out of his fourth-place finish in the Travers Stakes in fine shape and will now sit back until his next start.
“The horse is perfectly fine – again he’s bounced out of a race as if there was little exertion,” said owner Cot Campbell of Dogwood Stable. “We all know we ran the best horse (and no less authority than Wayne Lukas, trainer of the horse that won it) volunteered that to me on Sunday.
“The only good thing about the race is that he again validated his class and ability.”
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Palace Malice is likely to make his next start versus older horses in the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Sept. 28.

Washington did win the Academy Award for best supporting actor for this role. He certainly exuded a combative persona in the movie. His fellow actors just wished he had left it on the battlefield, and that’s all I can say.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, to my dear friend Shari!!!
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, to Barbara and Alan. I loved meeting you both last year at Breeder’s Cup! Here’s wishing you many, many more!
Sue, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your mother always!
Trina, your poems were wonderful. Aren’t we blessed to have our beloved four legged fur babies to love!
I was glued to the TV Saturday watching all the racing from Saratoga. It was a bit of “the good, the bad and the ugly.” The wins by Will Take Charge, Royal Delta and Game on Dude were fantastic. I was cheering like crazy for Mentor Cane. He really got close this time. And them of course there was the heartbreak of Race 9. So very sad!! Rest in Peace to two such gallant lads.
Terry Crow, your welcome back was very kind!
Sue Noel, it was so wonderful talking to you on Saturday! You are one very special lady. Here is the website for “Falling for Eli”. Dear Bluegrass Girl Thank You so very much on the Update on my Beloved Orfevre.
I am so happy that he got to France Safely. Soo Happy. Was going to tell you something kind of funny. My British Coworker and another girl from the bank and their husbands are going to England and Scotland on September 9th. I asked them today if I could be a stowaway with them. They told me yeah sure come join the rest of them. (Oh gosh so wish I could go)
You see I want to go see Orfevre run in the Arc. They told me but the only problem was that they weren’t going to France. And I quickly told them oh that’s Ok however I could get the rest of the way to France, Train Boat, walk hitchhike. Chris (My British coworker quickly laughed and said I can’t see you hitchhiking, we all got the biggest laugh out of that.
Well you know anything for Orfevre, I believe I would walk or ride a bike just too funny. Oh well one of them and myself can’t be gone from work at the same time so I guess that x’s that out. Probably couldn’t get a ticket to the race now anyway.
But One day Orfevre……………I sure do want to see you. Love Ya so much.

Civil War Note
I watched the video I had purchased at Gettysburg about the “Horses of Gettysburg”. Like the “War Horse” and stories of Sgt. Reckless; the hardships and loss of life for horses which go to war is difficult to watch. But there is also a profound beauty in these equine hero’s. We are reminded of just how close the relationship between man and horse is. They have been our constant companion through most of the major turning points in our history. Side by side we have traveled together. Without their help, it is doubtful we would have succeeded in many of our endeavors. That bond, forged throughout hundreds of years is still strong and if we are lucky enough to give our heart to one of these noble creatures with love and have that love returned, then we are blessed indeed. We owe them a debt of gratitude we can never totally repay and which demands our friendship, care and respect.
The movie is narrated by Ronald Maxwell, the director of the movie “Gettysburg”. There is also a long interview documentary with Mr. Maxwell where he talks about filming with horses for “Gettysburg”. He tells the story at one point about a horse named Buttons which is ridden by Sam Elliott. Whenever Sam was not riding him, however, Ron used him to get around the set. They became very attached and one afternoon when they are filming, Buttons, picks his way past everything until he reaches the inner circle where the director sits. He walks up behind Ron and lays his head on his shoulder. Mr. Maxwell gets tears in his eyes describing what it felt like to have this wonderful horse reach out to him in such a beautiful way.
Ann Moss once said that Zenyatta always chooses to be gentle, that is a lesson that many in the human race have yet to learn. Here is the trailer for the movie.

I totally agree with you. Humankind would not have survived and succeeded without the horse. The wild ones, TBs and all horses are National treasures and should be revered. Love and Hugs, JB

Dawn-Wonderful story about Buttons. If any creature, be it either human or animal, loves you in such a manner, you can’t be all bad. Sam Elliott’s role in that film, General John Buford, was one of the unsung heroes of the war.

ST NICHOLAS ABBEY UPDATE Coolmore Stud tweets
A major complication in St Nicholas Abbey’s recovery arose on Monday evening
as he appeared a little uncomfortable.
Radiographs showed the steel weight-bearing pin in his cannon bone had broken and after consultation, the surgeons decided to take it out.
The damaged pin can be clearly seen on the radiograph.
https://twitter.com/coolmorestud/status/372645490413678592/photo/1
This procedure was done Monday night, the leg has been re-cast and St Nicholas Abbey is now bearing weight on the fractured leg.
This development has come sooner than we would have ideally liked, so the next week is a very tentative period for us.
This morning St Nicholas Abbey is comfortable and is walking as well as can be expected

Today we with reverence recall
How Martin Luther King
Called upon us all
To let freedom ring!
Excerpts from Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered at the Lincoln Memorial fifty years ago today:
[Quote]
I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character….
This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with a new meaning
‘My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrim’s pride,
From every mountainside,
Let freedom ring.’
…When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, ‘Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!’ [end quote]
At 3:04PM EDT this afternoon, the bells will indeed ring in Washington, D.C., across this nation, and throughout the world!
Sue FL CPRC

Good afternoon Zenny, Redhead, Coz & my Zen family.
My goodness but this “joint is rocking” since I posted my new piece on THE VAULT yesterday!
In response, here I go:
RE: THE VAULT: Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your fabulous responses to this piece on Man O’ War’s first 3 crops. When I first started THE VAULT, my mission was to share my passion for thoroughbreds and to contribute to reviving the sport by writing down some of its rich history. It really is the case that the past is the gateway to the present as well as the future. The appreciation for my work has been so deeply moving. It has brought wonderful people like all of you into my life and opened a whole new avenue of interest for fans as far away as India & Japan. My goal this year is to do some more international stories, beginning with a look at a few of Australia’s most loved thoroughbred champions from the past. Special thanks to Trina, Judy Berube, Sandy (NE Ohio), Terry Crow, Jan/S., Bluegrass Girl, Sally Blank, Marshall (NC broad), Vicki B & Dawn for taking the time to write me a note here. It means more than I can say!
VICKI B & DAWN: Thank you for sharing about your mum & dad. I can’t get through this tough time without your support and I really, really appreciate it.
SUE FI CPRC: My heart goes out to you & your mum. My own mother is 94 and beginning to really weaken. It’s so, so difficult dealing with an ageing parent and when they are also battling serious illness, even more heartbreaking. My thoughts & prayers are with you both.
BARBARA & ALAN WOOD: Happy Anniversary! How beautiful to hear of partners who are celebrating another year together of friendship and family.
SHARI VOLTZ: HAPPY BIRTHDAY sweetie! May your year be filled with joy, love and many fabulous surprises.
PEGGY: Hearing about your passion for Orfevre made me pause & luxuriate in my passion for some of the really special thoroughbreds in my life — Terlingua, Dance Smartly, Northern Dancer, Secretariat, Genuine Risk, Alydar, Count Fleet, Rachel Alexandra & Zenny — none of whom I ever saw in person. Of course, that didn’t stop me from loving them and following their every move. But I would encourage you to realize your dream! GO FOR It, WOMAN!
RE: St. NICHOLAS ABBEY: This is not good news and the coming week will be quite critical. Wanting to understand more of the complexity of the healing process, I went off to the UK’s Racing Post, where a commentator had left this explanation: “The pin I assume they are talking about was placed through the healthy bone above the pastern joint to transfer the weight off the pastern & on to the steel frame of the cast surrounding it. It would have been removed when the pastern was deemed healthy.. ” Hopefully, the pin cracked because he’s ready to stand properly on that leg. It’s just that they wanted more time with the pin there for the bones to really toughen up. Putting him back into a cast is worrisome because it means he’ll favour that leg (although he is bearing weight on it but probably less than prior) and I’m certain they’re worried about laminitis. One of Zen’s family has started another candle site to send all of our posaitive thoughts to St. Nic & his family: http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=stni
RE: WEEKEND SURPRISE: It was GREAT seeing photos of her during her younger days. I have one in my Secretariat photo collection of her but she was a very, very old lady and had her fuzzy-bear retired coat on. I’ve always wanted to see more recent photos of her. And I’d forgotten that she was at Lane’s End!
I’ve been reading a fabulous new book on the Australian champion, Peter Pan. I’m really enjoying it and that’s important to say because a lot of these books can be really, really “dry” to read, I find. Making me wish that writers who write thoroughbred books would have more of a dash of Marguerite Henry or C.W. Anderson or Steve Haskin in their repertoire. But this lady has opted for a really sound story and it has kept my interest from page one, quite apart from the fact that Peter Pan was a legend in his own right. Here’s a review, should anyone be interested. It’s also available on KINDLE.

Meeting up with my brother this p.m. to discuss future plans for mum. Heart wrenching for multiple reasons, non-the -least having her go from a five bedroom house to a efficiency. Watching her have to disburse so many of her life’s treasures. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
You are one of the most gifted writers in racing, as I’ve told you many times. I always wait until everyone is gone or asleep so I can take my time and savor every word of The Vault. So very happy for your success. It’s long overdue. You know I love you, though I don’t get in touch with you near enough and tell you. The circle of life can break or hearts at times, but we all must face it, sooner or latter. Stay as strong as I know you are…

Dearest Abigail,
I know love for your mother and for each other will guide the decisions you and your brother must now make. You are in my heart and I will always be here for you if you need anything, just call. Love and hugs, Dawn

WHOOPS!
TRINA, OUR POET LAUREATE: How I love your poems and the fact that you’re a reader of poetry (Lord Byron, above). Who are your favourite poets?
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Thank you, Abigail, how kind of you! Among the many poets I admire, starting with the oldest, of course the immortal Shakespeare, then Lord Byron, William Wordsworth, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Emily Dickinson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and more contemporary, Langston Hughes, May Sarton, Dilys Laing, and Robert Frost. I will also be eternally grateful (and I mean this sincerely, despite the implicit touch of irony) to Joyce Kilmer for his poem Trees:
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree–
A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed
Against the sweet earth’s flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Some really good ones on your list Trina (and we’ll just read right past the irony!). Makes me want to get out the American Lit book I couldn’t bear to part with and bought from my high school bookstore (over 50 years ago!).

@Abigail–thank you so much for the good wishes. I love your writing, and I just wish I could remember it all! Prayers for you as you make those very tough decisions. I have been there, and it was one of the toughest things I have ever had to do. But at some point my head had to rule for her safety’s sake. Hugs.

Trina I added the FB page to my list from your friends Dobie recuse site. I am getting pics and I want them all. Darn you for sharing that link… I would have maybe 5-6 if I could. My special needs girl has to come first. Maybe when my home is empty I can think about some of her babies. They are all so cute. Thank you for sharing that with me. I really do love it.
