Ask The Experts: Round Four

Happy Friday!

You may have spotted an additional foal in Alys’ photo above. Zenyatta and 13Z were moved into a larger paddock this week, and they’re now turned out with two other mares.

Our Ask The Experts column has been on hiatus for a few months, and we’re happy to announce its return. The knowledgeable staff at Lane’s End will be answering questions from readers on a variety of topics. If you have been wondering anything about Zenyatta’s life as a broodmare or have a question related to foals, yearlings or Thoroughbred breeding, please send in your questions using the form below.

We have even more in store for you, as we’ll be kicking off the weekend with a Zenyatta Shop update. Look for a blog post tomorrow morning.

    Tomorrow is a really big racing day. I must admit I am frightened for Paynter after what has happened to St. Nicholas and Unbridled Song.

    Safe trip to Katie in the Prioress, Stephanie’s Kitten in the Diana, Palace Malice & Mike and of course the courageous Paynter.

    RIP, Unbridled Song. I’m so thankful I got to see him in June when I went to Taylor Made with Dawn Conrad and Shari Voltz. He was so majestic. You could tell he knew he was special. So sad.

    Trina, thank you for the link to the St Nicholas Abbey candle site. I’m headed there now. I’m so worried about him. Boy, this sure has been an awful week.

      Dear Sheena: Now don’t get me started on wombats – they are my favourite marsupial: as a child I just loved a story about the Muddleheaded Wombat! Glad young Prince George liked the bilbies – don’t think he’ll be so keen on the salty (crocodile). And I’m sure his Mum and Dad will make sure he keeps his distance from that one! Pleased to see the team involved with Pippa (that is, Belle Couture) is taking good care of her and not rushing her too soon. Hugs, KathyR.

      Dear Sheena:

      I did visit Charlie and all the Sweeties late yesterday afternoon. Everyone is doing really well. I miss Gigi, though, and I hope she is happy in her new home in Massachusetts. I posted on Page 11, I think, I think of Z’s last Blog that Angela felt since Katie was not able to take Gigi to college with her, Gigi was not getting the personal one on one attention she should have. So she found Gigi a caring woman in Massachusetts who adopted her. Gigi is a wonderful, kind and gentle soul and she will always be one of my Sweeties.

    Thank you for sharing another wonderful photo with us and offering us another round of asking the experts. Not only are you giving us glimpses into the life of our favorite wonder horse, you are expanding our knowledge of horses in general – a subject I’ve always been eager to learn about. None of my teachers in school were ever appreciative of that, but oh, well… :) I am so grateful you are sharing Zenyatta and her family with those of us who love her.

    Coolmore ‏Updates on St. Nicholas Abbey Sat. July 27 2013
    St Nicholas Abbey has made positive progress and is in good form today following yesterday’s colic surgery.
    The colic was caused by caecal shutdown (equivalent to the human appendix), which is an extremely painful condition.
    His treatment means he cannot have food for a prolonged period – this is difficult for a horse like St Nicholas Abbey who loves his food!
    He will get parentral nutrition instead (intravenous nutrition) to fulfill his daily requirements.
    Dr Nathan Slovis a medicine specialist from the Hagyard Institute in Kentucky arrived today to oversee his ongoing recovery and treatments.
    All surgeons are pleased with the progress he is making with his pastern reconstruction and he is taking weight on the leg well

      Dear Bluegrass Girl: Many thanks for this post – was wondering how St Nicholas Abbey was progressing – he’s certainly getting exceptional care, which is really what one would expect from Coolmore. But it looks like St Francis is going to be kept busy for a while, so we need no more nasty incidents on racetracks around the world. Cheers, KathyR.

    Is the shop going to increase it’s inventory to include items other than pictures . I do not have wall space for prints but I would be very interested in a sweatshirt and a large mug. Are any of these things going to be sold?

      Good for Mike and Palace Malice. He looked very good and did not seem to need a whole lot of urging. Mike seems to know exactly what this horse needs.

    Palace Malice Scores Solid Jim Dandy Win

    Dogwood Stables’ Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Palace Malice proved his class July 27 at Saratoga Race Course, powering to victory in the $600,000 Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. II) by a length over Will Take Charge.
    The sophomore son of Curlin was favored at 6-5 and impressive in his first start for trainer Todd Pletcher off his 3 1/4-length Belmont upset at odds of 13-1, returning to the home of his maiden score to run 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.37 on the fast main track. Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith was in the irons.

    Dear Z Family,

    SHERR is in need of new clippers. Our pair is so old that they barely even clip anymore. The handles heat up so much you can barely hold them, and we have to hold them together with duck tape. (Effective yes, but not very safe.) I beg for donations; any amount is welcome. Just put in the line that the donation is going toward “New Clippers” and make sure you let Ginny know that the Zenyatta family is sending in their donations and their love. I think that she has a very soft spot for everyone here; all horse lovers are bonded by that urge to help, regardless of what horse sport we follow.

    Del Mar: Kettle Corn foils Paynter in deep stretch of San Diego (Race Replay Video)

    DEL MAR, Calif. – Kettle Corn, a 6-year-old who has often been overshadowed by his rival Game On Dude in the last 18 months, won the biggest race of his career in Saturday’s $200,250 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar, catching the heavily favored, and sentimental choice, Paynter in the final furlong.
    Paynter, the winner of the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in July 2012 who later survived severe bouts with laminitis and colitis, finished second after leading in the stretch. Sent off at 3-5, Paynter looked like winner in the final furlong but could not hold off Kettle Corn, losing by a half-length.

      This was Paynter’s first try at a distance since his return and on a funny track as well. I did not expect him to even be in the money and he proved me wrong. This was a good tightener for his next race and he will definitely be tough to beat for the rest of the year.
