Happy Friday!
Spring is in full swing at Lane’s End! We spent the earlier part of the week in Kentucky visiting Zenyatta and her two boys.
13Z is quite a frisky and independent colt. He’s equally interested in greeting visitors and cruising around the paddock with his mom. You’ll see them running together in the video at the end of this post.
Coz, who is now a very handsome yearling, was always waiting at the fence to greet us.
There are so many more photos from this visit, and we’ll be putting up brand new photo galleries next week.
Enjoy!

Dear Ann:
Thanks for this info. Another successful Big D Boy. Love and Hugs, JB

Ann NC. Thanks for this. If you click on the photo of McDynamo, you can really see the resemblance to Big D. I also looked at Big D’s photo. Great dapples like our Z.
Sadly, tomorrow is the one year anniversary of the passing of Big D. Miss him every single day. Love you, Big D.

Good grief, it seems like yesterday!

Yes dear Ann,
thank you for the info.

The pics are great and mirror the wonderful care these horses are receiving. I’m curious about next year. Has Z been bred again or are there plans to breed her? If so, to whom? Keep that little one in training Bigmama and watch over that number one son too!

Oh, btw
Sheik Mo’s stable was busted w 45 horses testing + for steroids, according to the DRF. Aby have any thoughts on that?

This is an interesting case. None of the horses had yet competed in a race at the meet so I wonder when the steroids would have taken affect and how long they stay in the horse’s system and if the people involved expected the horses to test clean at a future date..

Zenyatta has always made people happy, and been an inspiration to all; I think Ann Moss for one, said it is impossible to be sad around her. She is so full of life, and faces everything in a positive way!! I feel she is as good as any human role model, and better then a lot. It looks like she is passing these attributes on to her beautiful sons. She has produced two well-made colts, and has passed on her spirit and heart to them. Zenyatta and her sons are going to be in the history books, and we are all going to be so proud, because the Mosses, the Z team, and Lane’s End have allowed us to have her into our lives. Thank-you all so much, she does so much good for all of us!! I, for one, am in an assisted living home, and sometimes I’m very lonely. A number of times a day, I look into the site and visit; Zenyatta, her sons, and the other good people who love her, make me smile, and all of a sudden, I’m not sad anymore. Ann Moss once said that Zenyatta was such a blessing, and I think we all feel that way. There is only one thing that I plead with the Mosses, PLEASE KEEP THE LITTLE RED PRINCE TOO; YOU ARE THE ONLY ONES I TRUST HIM WITH, AND I KNOW HE WILL MAKE YOU PROUD!!!!
Trina Nagele in So Cal --PUR
Love your post, Roberta, and you can rest assured that the Mosses will NOT PART with either prince! No worries on that score. Love and hugz in Dumplinghood, Trina

Roberta, You expressed yourself so well and I’m very happy that you and I and all the others who love Zenyatta and her sons have this place to make us happy. The Moss’ are wonderful people, can’t praise them enough for how they have shared their great mare.
So, always know that whenever you are feeling lonely all you have to do is come here and read what everyone is saying or just say what you feel.
Hugs,

Well said, Roberta. After I get my first cup of coffee, I get on the Blog, look at the pictures of Z and her boys and read all the latest posts. I live in an area where most people are not in to horse racing and it is wonderful to have like minded people to talk to. Hope your day is good and you find your morning joy, as I did today, in the pictures of Zenyatta and sons.

RIP George Jones. Our friend Ann Maree posted this on Zenny’s Tribe:
“He Stopped Loving Her Today” was voted the all-time country song ever by a Billboard survey a few years back.

Here’s another George Jones favorite, The Race Is On. What a great extended horseracing metaphor! RIP George Jones.
Now the race is on,
And here comes Pride in the backstretch,
Heartaches goin’ to the inside–
My tears are holdin’ back,
They’re tryin’ not to fall,
My heart’s out of the runnin’
True Love’s scratched for another’s sake.
The race is on and it looks like Heartaches
And the winner loses all.

Dear Trina,
Thanks for these links. George Jones was legendary. Another good song of his was “Who’s gonna fill their shoes?”. I think the answer is: nobody can.
All the best, always
Trina Nagele in So Cal --PUR
@SunnyB–In answer to your question about how George Jones got the nickname Possum, this is what it says in Wikipedia:
“The shape of his nose and facial features gave Jones the nickname ‘The Possum.'”
Sunny, you and I are both relieved to know that it had nothing to do with his culinary habits.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
That is really too funny. I had never noticed the similarity……..
sue and tony
Roberta, what a lovely post you wrote. We so agree with your comment that Zenny has been an inspiration to all. When you look at her sweet face you know she has a unique spiritual quality. It’s part of the aura surrounding her. Ann said Zenny rested her head on her shoulder at the Keenland Sale…that was the beginning of the magic.
Sarah at LE has said how those who come to visit her start to shake in her presence as if to validify her larger than life personna. Zenny just draws you to her…whether it be through a computer screen or face to face. How we wish we could have touched her…just once.
In a world that seems to have gone mad, this place is a safe haven, a place where joy and peace prevail. That is the ongoing gift of Zenyatta…she makes everything and everyone better just by her existance.

Dear Judy, I couldn’t agree with you more! Here are the lyrics.
Run for the Roses
–Dan Fogelberg
Born in the valley
And raised in the trees
Of Western Kentucky
On wobbly knees,
With mama beside you
To help you along,
You’ll soon be a growing up strong.
And it’s run for the roses
As fast as you can
Your fate is delivered,
Your moment’s at hand,
It’s the chance of a lifetime
In a lifetime of chance,
And it’s high time you joined
In the dance.
All the long, lazy mornings
In pastures of green,
The sun on your withers,
The wind in your mane,
Could never prepare you
For what lies ahead,
The run for the roses so red.
And it’s run for the roses
As fast as you can…
From sire to sire
It’s born in the blood–
The fire of a mare
And the strength of a stud.
It’s breeding and it’s training,
And it’s something unknown
That drives you and carries
You home.
And it’s run for the roses
As fast as you can…
Max
Judy B and Trina. This seems all the more real because of Z and her two guys. Very nice posts.

Z’s two boys have all the potential to be successful. They have great bloodlines on both sides. Can’t wait to see how they go. God bless them and keep them safe and sound always.
Visited the farm this afternoon. Weather was in the 60’s and not much wind. PC, GG and HT were wearing their fly masks and soaking up the sun. They all looked so beautiful with the sun shining on their beautiful coats. Hugs, JB

JudyB. Very happy for you. Seeing these horses happy and healthy must be wonderful. Any word on the plans for Gigi going to college?

I spoke with Katie on Thursday last week and she said that she is trying to convince her parents to pay for Gigi’s board at the college. So, it’s still not definite that Gigi will be going with Katie.
They really have bonded, though. Katie was riding Gigi bareback on Thursday. Hugs, JB

Perhaps some of you have felt, as I did, that there seems to be something missing between the second stanza and the final one. I’ve tried to come up with an additional stanza to go in that gap, and here it is. Some one-syllable words (ease, breeze, learn, race, hand, hone) are to be sung as two syllables to fit the tune.
Leaving this ease,
You’ll go to a place
Where you’ll gallop and breeze
And learn to race.
With stopwatches in hand,
Your progress they’ll trace.
Your body and mind you will hone.
Then it’s run for the roses…

Judy, Thanks for posting that song. I haven’t heard it in awhile since I no longer live in Kentucky. Homesick tears in my eyes but I loved it.
A bit of history: Kentuckians were somewhat displeased that he wrote “Raised in the trees of Western Kentucky.” Everyone knew the thoroughbred farms were all in Central Kentucky. When the song was done locally there in Louisville, the words were changed to “Central Kentucky.”
Trina Nagele in So Cal --PUR
Thanks so much for your post, Shirlee! I have long been troubled by just that wording–“western” is just plain wrong. On the map, Lexington looks to me like it could even be called not central but EASTERN Kentucky.

To Sue Noel and her Barnaby, from Dawn Diovera’s Blog Horse and Man today, about how cowboy Michael Johnson found the perfect bit.
http://horseandman.com/
THE PERFECT BIT
Michael learned about the perfect bit from a true old horseman that he had consulted to help him with one of his roping horses. Michael thought the horse needed a different bit.
The older, wise cowboy said that indeed, there was the ‘perfect bit’ that would work on Michael’s horse.
First, however, the old guy showed Michael how to communicate with his legs/weight more clearly – and then removed the bridle of Michael’s horse (while he was riding) and told Michael to go through all of his commands using only leg and weighting…
As Michael’s horse performed perfectly, without a bridle, Michael exclaimed in disbelief, “How can this be? Yesterday I couldn’t get this horse to take one good step forward…!”
And the answer from the wise old horseman…
A bit of Knowledge.
A bit of Understanding.
A bit of Love.

I hope they keep him with his mom as long as possible. When you watch the videos – it is clear she is teaching them. No one else can teach them like she can or what she knows. She knows things humans/trainers cannot know or will ever know. I thought this with 12Z and it is even more apparent here. They may have their “routine” way of doing things at Lane’s End – but Zenyatta has never, ever been routine. Hope Z gets to teach as long as possible…forget the usual way of doing things….
Brenda
Truer words have ever been written!
Zenny certainly does things her way. She put a diamond exclamation mark on this birth, just before midnight on her birthday, and a perfect 145 pound healthy, gorgeous eared, chestnut! It will really be something if he doesn’t turn. Very Zenny!!! She always does everything her way. Remember how she even acknowledged her name with a double head bob during the 2010 Apple Blossom?
She is as amazing as is every member of Team Zenyatta. :)

If our Prince Coz lives up to his royal pedigree, he will do very well. Check out the stats for Bernie’s other offspring. Outstanding! No pressure, Coz. You will have those Z genes working their magic too, if the stars align as they should for a Cozmic One. In the meantime, enjoy that time with Crescent Moon Guy and your other pals. Lane’s End is good place to be for just being a yearling.

JudyB. Yes, I think that you’re right. As he grows older, Coz does seem to have more and more of Bernie about him. Both Bernie and Z are very elegant looking horses. It will be interesting to see if he takes after his sire or Z in stature. He seems to have Z’s temperament, at least around Mrs Moss. Given his name, he must have a celestial quality to him as well.

Mr. and Mrs. Moss, Lanes End, Team Z.
Thank you so much for these lovely photos and video. I just cant get enough of my loves.
Zenyatta is more beautiful than ever.
Cozmic One stole my heart 3/8/12 and has held it ever since. He is like my third grandson to me. He is more and more handsome and reminds me so much of his Dad and Mom and his grandma, the great Vertiginous.(spelling). I love how he loves Ann so much.
13Z is beyond belief to me. I dont know near as much about conformation or anything like some of you here, but he looks absolutely perfect to me. I cant get over how he is running with Mom the way he is. I have watched several times and am amazed.
With all of my heart I thank you Lanes End, Team Z and the wonderful Ann and Jerry Moss for this treasure you continue to share with us. God bless you all. Zenyatta, Cozmic One, 13Z, I love you forever, my angels
