Happy Friday!
Spring is in full swing at Lane’s End! We spent the earlier part of the week in Kentucky visiting Zenyatta and her two boys.
13Z is quite a frisky and independent colt. He’s equally interested in greeting visitors and cruising around the paddock with his mom. You’ll see them running together in the video at the end of this post.
Coz, who is now a very handsome yearling, was always waiting at the fence to greet us.
There are so many more photos from this visit, and we’ll be putting up brand new photo galleries next week.
Enjoy!

Anyone see this? Bo Derek Visits Zenyatta and Z13
So glad to see so many different types of people in the horse racing horse racing world!
maureen phi-llips
Thanks for the video, horseracingfan2, that was so adorable, can’t believe how big the young Prince ZT has grown. I loved that whole imprinting thing by BO and the Queen seemed to be in agreement as she was loving on him when Bo was talking about him remembering her at the winner’s circle. We will all be there too.
Have a Blessed day.
Max
He’s a big guy for only a month. Very poised too.
Ann NC
Very poised,13Z, Zenny you have taught him well.
I recall those days when the long lost relatives would visit and shower you w/ hugs and kisses and Mom would say…mind your manners and smile!
Good boy 13Z.

YAY! Mike Smith aboard Princess Sylmar!! Great job, Mike and PS!
Congratulations to all connections.

Marshall (NC broad)
Oops! Make that Princess OF Sylmar. Sorry that I omitted the preposition!
Mea Culpa
Trina Nagele in So Cal--PUR
High hoof to Mike Smith and 37-1 shot Princess of Sylmar! Biggest upset in the history of the race. Mike on Princess of Sylmar: “She’s a little horse, but she has a big heart!” On winning his first Kentucky Oaks: “It means a lot–I’ve always wanted to win this one.” Poor Dreaming of Julia had a troubled trip, getting pinched at the start and a couple times more, but made a courageous run to get fourth.
Mary
Never bet against a red horse with white forehead marking… (this bodes well for the little Z13!)
My two picks didn’t even get close. *sighs* It’s a good thing I don’t bet actual money on these kinds of things.
Trina Nagele in So Cal--PUR
OOPS—Make that the SECOND biggest upset in the Oaks history. Lemons Forever won at odds of 47-1 in 2006.

dear judy goodnight have a restful night and sweet dreams huge congrats to mike smith and princess of slymar what an upset!!!love and hugs sheena
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
Went to the local casino to play the Oaks. Dreaming of Julia and Rose To Gold, which was my Exacta, bumped into each other at the start. They were in gates 8 and 9 and that compromised any chance for them. Was happy for Mikey and the winner, Princess Sylmar. Love and Hugs, JB
Ann NC
Sounds like a great day, Judy B. Poor , Julia, she was trying to get between them.
shirleeinindy
Judy, I was with you on both those horses. From the replays it looks as if Julia was lucky to stay on her feet and avoid disaster. The Bloodhorse slideshow gives a better view of what happened. Rose to Gold is still ahead of the game since she has won $700,000 and the paid $1,400 for her. According to the announcer on the Oaks show, she will stay in the family as the owners wife and children are going to disown him if he sells her.
Off to Hoosier Park to bet Orb, Palace Malice and for Rosie, MyLute. So glad it doesn’t look as if Orb is going to be the favorite as the favorites don’t do well. I can live with Revolutionary and Calvin winning. And as a long shot in the slop, Charming Kitten. Either way Ken Ramsey will be smiling.
Ingrid Arnone
My pick was second, she was winning but she lost! Boohoo! Boohoo! Maybe tomorrow…. Good night friends boohoo!
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Ingrid:
Read wear Beholder was fractious in the post and unseated her jockey. She ran well, but her fractiousness may have sapped some of her energy for the race. Love and Hugs, JB
Trina Nagele in So Cal--PUR
Yes, in the post parade Beholder even sat her backside right down on the track, that’s when she unseated her jockey. I think you’re right, Judy, about her fractiousness maybe costing her the race.

Dear Trina:
Wow! Glad she and the jockey were OK. Hugs, JB

Dear Judy and Trina,

Kentucky Oaks upset: Princess of Sylmar scores for Pletcher
By Mike Welsch Daily Racing Form 05/03/2013 6:23PM
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Princess of Sylmar benefited from a swift pace, finishing full of run down the center of the course to wear down reigning juvenile filly champion Beholder to register a shocking half-length victory in Friday’s $1 million Kentucky Oaks.
Princess of Sylmar gave trainer Todd Pletcher his third Oaks win. Pletcher also finished third with Unlimited Budget and fourth with Dreaming of Julia, the 3-2 favorite, who had her chances compromised when severely roughed shortly after the start.
Kentucky Oaks Order of Finish: 1. Princess of Sylmar – Mike Smith – Todd Pletcher 2. Beholder – Garrett Gomez – Richard Mandella 3. Unlimited Budget – Javier Castellano – Todd Pletcher 4. Dreaming of Julia – John Velazquez – Todd Pletcher 5. Midnight Lucky – Rafael Bejarano – Bob Baffert 6. Pure Fun – Julien Leparoux – Ken McPeek 7. Close Hatches – Joel Rosario – Bill Mott 8. Watching Princess of Sylmar win so reminded me of Miracles of Life!
She does not have the size of many in the field. But, she has the heart.
Well done Princess!!
Great ride Mike! Congratulations on the First Oaks Win (he’s ridden in 10)

UNLIMITED BUDGET’s name–Did you see the TV footage where Mike Repole said his wife Maria was the only one who, when she had an “unlimited budget” for their house, still managed to go over it? And Maria agreed! Too cute.

Pati- On the Orb Wagon
I looked high and low today with no luck on her but I’ll look tomorrow before the Derby festivities get under way.
I know the other mighty grey, Winter Memories, is in foal to Street Cry but I haven’t seen anything in Awesome Maria yet. I’ll post the link the second I do.

Black Onyx scratched from Kentucky Derby
AAP+ International Horse Racing | 4/5/2013 at 4:54am
Long shot Black Onyx was a late scratching for the Kentucky Derby because of a chip in his left ankle, leaving 19 horses to vie for the roses.
The scratching occurred on Friday after wagering for the race had opened, so Black Onyx’s No.1 post position will be left empty on Saturday. The remaining horses will stay in their original starting gate positions.
The scratching came too late for Fear the Kitten, the 21st qualifier, to be included in the field

Congrats to Mikey, but a bumber for me! Princess pie upset my superfecta! I had Beholder, Dreaminging of Julia, Unlimited Budget and Midnight Lucky! I had the 2, 3, 4 and 5th place finishers! This was my first time trying a superfecta, I was so close! I don’t think I will try that tmro, to hard to pick!
Hope everyone here is in good health and enjoying the beautiful weather! Here on the East Coast we went from winter into Summer! (No spring!)
Hey Judy B if I had hit the superfecta you would have heard me in RI! They were all right there!
Heading to a Derby Party for all the races tmro, so very excited, the most exciting 2mins in sports!
Thanks for the video and FB pic of Bo and Zenny and cutie pie Little Big Red! He is so cute, almost too cute to be a boy!
Safe trip to all horses and jockey’s tmro and to those who dare to wager, best of luck!
Almost a BIG winner

Dear GirlSaratoga:
If I had heard you cheering, I would have joined in. That’s just so frustrating. Must say though, you did real good at handicapping the race. Wish it had worked for you, but Mikey took advantage of a troubled start for Dreaming of Julia. Not to take anything away from Princes Sylmar and Mikey, but I think DOJ had no chance to win it after the bumping with Rose To Gold at the start. Take Charge Indy won The Alysheba Stakes in fine fashion today. Congrats to him.
Would you please e-mail me when you get the chance; rberube59@cox.net. Thanks. Hugs, JB

@Judy B and Ann-That story about Sylvester Carmouche and what he did in 1990 at Delta Downs is one of the all-time cheating stories in sports, much less horse racing. Probably wouldn’t have been caught if he hadn’t won the race by so much.

Bo Derek gets to visit Zenyatta but we can’t. Why?
Terry Crow
I get your point and I somewhat agree. However, she is not as egregious as some celebs as she is a member of the California Horse Racing Board. Just don’t get me started as to why she is a member. I have an answer, but anything our former governor did is subject to scrutiny. When he (the former governor) appeared at Zenyatta’s first retirement party he was practically booed off the track.
Pati- Derby Dreamin'
Right now, the only people who have visited her are celebrities, the Mosses themselves, and Team Zenyatta. Fans have visited, but usually paid big money that went to charities to see her.
If they opened up their farm to Zenyatta fans, the sheer mass would be uncontrollable for Lanes End. They are a commercial farm, and they probably can’t take a whole day out of their schedule to accommodate the huge mobs of the faithful that would come visit her. They have their own mares, other boarding mares, foals, weanlings, yearlings that are staying on site, yearlings to prepare for the sales, and retired mares to take care of as well.
A short visit from Bo Derek can be worked around, but a fan a day, or many groups of fans a day to see her probably isn’t possible. I imagine they have separate staff for the stallion shows, and those who take care of the mares and other boarders. While I want to visit her with all my being as well, we just have to be patient. Maybe on the year that Z won’t be carrying a foal, they will allow a few people at a time to go see her. How they will pick the fans, I don’t know. Maybe a trivia or a contest? But right now, we just can’t. There are too many of us who want to see her, and it would take a week to get everyone in and out.

This link may have been posted before, I don’t know, but I had not seen it — guess I don’t have ALL of Dan Fogelberg’s albums. I’ve liked him for years, saw him in concert a long time ago, but had never heard “Run for the Roses”. I wish the video with it was clearer, but the sound from the horses at Calumet is wonderful, with Affirmed, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Personal Ensign, Mr. Prospector, Alydar:
