Happy Friday!
Spring is in full swing at Lane’s End! We spent the earlier part of the week in Kentucky visiting Zenyatta and her two boys.
13Z is quite a frisky and independent colt. He’s equally interested in greeting visitors and cruising around the paddock with his mom. You’ll see them running together in the video at the end of this post.
Coz, who is now a very handsome yearling, was always waiting at the fence to greet us.
There are so many more photos from this visit, and we’ll be putting up brand new photo galleries next week.
Enjoy!

It’s getting real close to the Derby now. I wanted to say good luck to everybody and their favorites running. I just pray so hard for safety for all and that everyone comes back to the barns safely. I think we’ve just got such a beautiful group running this year. I just say “Power Up” to everyone
I know I have been talking about VyJack alot and some probably want me to hush, and I will but I have just simply became a fan of his. Don’t really care if he wins or loses. ( Well I would like for him to win) but I just hope he stays safe. I saw him peering out of his stall in a picture today. Don’t know if he just reminds me of Barbaro or what but I just think he’s terrific. They are just beautiful blessings and sometimes we just click with certain horses. Alas, Orfevre, Animal Kingdom, Leroi,
Did someone call us horseysnobs, Don’t Care.
I just love my horses.
May God Bless and take care of all horses and riders and all of us.
Max
Peggy (N). Nice post. Best of luck to your Vyjack. He has very loyal supporter in you. To all of my fellow horsey snobs and Z groupies, may your horses run their best and come home safe and sound. Whoever wins, we will all be happy.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
Thanks again for the post on Orfevre. Sounds like he’s doing really good this year. Arc here we come……………………………
Max
Peggy (N). That was a very positive report on Orfevre. He might be coming into his own now. It would be nice to see him take the Arc after all of his effort. He is a handsome horse, grand ole chestnut, with the best tail since Whirlaway.

LoL! Max and Peggy (N), about “my fellow horsey snobs and Z groupies”, as I am happy to be part of this esteemed assemblage.

Whirlaway is one of my all-time favorites. He actually contributed to the war effort during WW2. Was supposed to run in the Santa Anita Handicap in 1942, was already at SA when December 7, 1941 happened. Needless to say, the 1942 SA season was cancelled and the track eventually became an internment camp.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
Never knew SA was used that way. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of racing history. Learn a lot here on Z’s Blog. Hugs, JB

I’ve been seeing a lot of awesome VyJack workout pictures! He looks amazing!

Peggy, Nice post. And don’t worry about talking about Vyjack. I have been talking about Mucho Macho Man for quite some time on this blog and everyone is very patient with my praise of him and his beauty.
If, like me, you live somewhere that no one else is into horse racing, on the Blog you have someone to talk with.
Blessing and a good day.

Dear Shirlee:
Exactly! Look forward to commenting back and forth with everyone every day. We’re so lucky to have Z’s Blog and Forum. Thank you again Z Team and Lane’s End. Hugs, JB

We sure are lucky. In my neck of the woods, if you say First Saturday in May, the reply is always, ” who’s getting married?”. I told my girls,if and when, that weekend is ONLY for horses, sorry girls.
Well and then there is the Preak and Belmont, so they better elope, just kidding. One will probably marry in a barn any way.
Yes, Thanks Z Team and LE for spoiling us.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Ann:
You’ve got me laughing as usual. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy B.,
I agree — we are tremendously lucky to have this site.
Ann,
I am laughing, too! By the way, a barn is a lovely place, don’t you think? It’s an equine chapel!
Hugs to all
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Shirlee and Judy.
Yes , its always been just me for my love for horses. (Except for my Dad) He loved them too, but he’s passed now. None of my friends liked horses. We talk about it at work but none are into it like me. The one friend that I have will listen some but then I can tell they get tired of hearing about it. Not me, I could talk about horses forever.
So glad we have this wonderful place. And all of you such great friends
Barbara Wood (Texas)
@Sue Noel–thank you. It is heartbreaking that we cannot save them all so that they can blossom like Barnaby has. Good night, all. Sleep well, Zenny and 13Z (and Coz too, of course.)

Here is news of Wise Dan. He’s racing at Churchill, not Keeneland in the Derby undercard. Point of Entry is in that race. Two other Breeders’ Cup winners are running in other races, Beholder and Trinniberg.

Judy B. You are most welcome. This will be a wildly exciting Saturday for us horsey snobs and Z groupies with the Derby and its undercard races.
The Brits are also holding the 2000 Guineas on Saturday. I don’t know much about the horses in that race, but I have read that the favorite is Dawn Approach, a Goldolphin horse, who was not involved in the recent drug problems. Abigail and Sheena or others might know more.
Ann NC
Thanks , Max. A great day of racing this week,w/ the Oaks and our little ladies. It is wildly exciting and then Dan, POE and the Derby.
Excitement rages.

Dear Max:
Thanks for this info. Looking forward to the Oaks and the Derby and undercard on Saturday. My nephew and his wife are leaving for Kentucky tomorrow. He asked me to send him videos on some of the horses I like. I sent him about ten.
His little 4 year old daughter is named Rosalina; his name is Joe, so I told him to Exacta Box Rosie’s mount My Lute with Joe Bravo’s mount Black Onyx. Quite a hunch and potential for a huge payoff. To quote our esteemed GP, “Even when you know, you never know”. Hugs, JB
Ann NC
I love it, Judy B.!!!
What was the title of that movie?
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Ann:
“Let It Ride” is the title. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend you do. Very, very funny. I think you’ll really appreciate the humor. Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Sounds like this will be a great race with Wise Dan and Point of Entry. Sounds like a really great day of racing.
Pati- Derby TIME!!!
This is going to be a freak race. One of the best of the year, and if those two Titans hook up into a duel at the top of the stretch, it might eclipse even the Derby as the best race of the weekend. (IMHO)
Max
Pati. I agree. That race should be televised.

Max, I was blessed to see Wise Dan at Keeneland two weeks ago in the Maker’s Mile along with our beloved Mr. Commons and my moma’s here John Shirreffs. It was a thrill and then some. All mentioned are nothing short of amazing.
To whom it may concern:
SARBONNE, the horse trained to pull up early thus allowing both Zenyatta and El Vino to pass him, Won his race at Emerald Downs Friday night. Not sure why, and very disappointed, that no one (here) seems to care enough to take a brief moment to mention it. He’s as much a part of Zenyatta’s story as Mario, John, Dottie, Ann or Jerry….Way to Go Sarbonne!!
My tribute and thank you to John Shirreffs and all the “good guy” trainers of the sport . It was a special trip with several profound Full circle moments. I’m so sad to see the end of and era, and the soon to be end to Hollywood Park, The most sacred ground. Like I say, I don’t have a gift with for words, I have no motives, I’m not trying to impress you with my “great” gift, or promote myself with a false pretense . My only motive and desire is to attempt to honor my (moma’s hero), a true hero of the sport and share with you just how Great a man he is and a very small amount of my families journey . I will have the settings for this public only for a day or two.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=324385101021482&set=a.218473681612625.48372.100003499857762&type=1&theater
Dear Mr. Shirreffs, as I told you, I’ve clung to this gift during my darkest moments. The kind of moments that bring you to your knees. I can do no better than to repeat the words you sent to me along with this amazing gift, March 20, 2012-
“Friends forever. We shared a special time all together no matter how far apart we where. Love inspires! “—-John Shirreffs.
Like moma always said, when it comes to Zenyatta, “Nothing, but Joy!” Live your dreams dear hero-of- my- moma’s- heart and may the joy you gave her, her family and Zenyatta fans across the world always be with you.
Max
Beautiful words from a beautiful person, an inspiration.

Thank you, Ashton, for sharing this tribute to your mom’s (and our) hero, John Shirreffs. It is very moving to learn of his very special gift to you in honor of dear Kari. I don’t normally use the word “awesome” (feeling it has been degraded), but here is a case when I call upon it in the fullness of its former meaning to convey the magnificence of this gift and the accompanying message.
Please know also that several of us here are following Sarbonne through our Virtual Equibase Stables and delighted in his success. We are following Z’s workmate El Vino too, who is doing well, and Z’s stablemate from Barn 55 days G Ten (Moss homebred son of Giacomo), who is not doing so well since he is no longer a Moss horse nor in John’s stable anymore. Love and hugz in Dumplinghood, Trina

Dear Ashton:
Wow! Wonderful that you have an ongoing friendship with JS. He and his Team are very special people, I know, as are you and your Moma. I’m so happy that your bond with them has helped get you through your sadness. Thank you for sharing the photo with us. It is sad to think that Hollywood Park and all the special areas there that remind us of Z could be lost. We know that even though they may physically be gone, we carry the memories in our hearts always of that special barn, that special patch of grass and trees where Z grazed.
Sarbone has been on the radar of the rescue group EAN, which I belong to. We are so happy that he won his race and is doing well. We will continue to watch his progress.
You’re quite a girl and I’m always so glad to see a post from you. Love and Hugs, JB

Thanks for the link to your beautiful post Ashton. I will never forget meeting John S at the BC and found that his kindness extends beyond what anyone could hope – even in the midst of a throng of adoring fans he had never seen before in his life.
I think many of us follow Sarbonne on his FB page (you may not recognize my name). I thought sure I remembered someone posting here about his win, but perhaps I was confusing the two sites. Those of us who joined this group at the end of Zenyatta’s career didn’t really know of him other than through the memories of others.

Ashton…I loved your post. I frequent both El Vino’s and Sarbonne’s FB pages and find nothing but pure joy and an amazing amount of information from both. They are linked forever to our Queen and always humbly remember her and their time at Barn 55.
El Vino has come into his own lately with two consecutive wins and now the wonderful Sarbonne adds to the list, I miss your mother every time I frequent this site. Her videos always made me smile,

Dear Ashton:
Thank you so much for such a beautiful post. Wow, what a special gift to have received from such a great and special person that John is. I also loved the photo of the horseshoe in the sky. I like so many others feel so fortunate to have met John Shirreffs at Barn 55 where all those magical moments with Zenyatta took place. I am so sorry that Hollywood Park is coming to an end. So very sad! And I can’t believe that there isn’t something in the works to try to save it.
It is always good to her from you. Thanks for sharing.

Dear Vampressqueen,
Before I go any further, I must confess that I am totally in love with your name and the shortened form, Vamp!. it takes one with an artistic flair to come up with such a name, so I salute you.
I am writing in response to your response to my post on page 10, just me saying thank you for your kind words to my post.
Hope you had a Blessed productive day today. Have a restful night and God’s Protection for you and your family. It is well.
Vampressqueen Sue Colvin /NJ
why thank u for the compliment maureen.
you have just made my day! <3
vampressqueen is a nickname that i've had since the 90's for when i got my 1st pc.
i needed a name for my new email @hotmail. everything that i orignally wanted – wonderwoman (my nickname at the track), a vareity of horse related names, ect were taken, – so i eventually came up w/ my name which was available.
of course it can get tiring to always type that so i shortened it to vampress…..vamp… out of laziness. haha
i use it here becaise "sue" is too popular a name which can be confusing. haha
yes i actually had a productive day yetserday- i managed to vacuum & clean the bathroom & get a shower(a major task for me). i'm happy that i was able to phiyscally to do something. however, i'm now paying the price for chores cus my body/back/ect hurts bigtime. :( oh well
i also want to tell u i love ur "LOL" lots of love.
ur creative as well :)
may god bless &watch over u & urs today.

Good morning Vampressqueen,
Thank you, you just put a smile on my face, I love your style of writing, you make everything sound so light and funny even while relating your day of chores and the accompanying body pain!. Take heart, this too shall pass, and all that is left to remember is your clean house and how pleased you are with the way everything looks, your even tempted to invite us all to dinner including the Queen of our hearts Zenyatta and her boys, just to show off.!
Your’e too nice, there is nothing artsy about LOL, just copied it. Am such a copy cat, that’s why I admire originality which you have my dear. Good for you. To tell you how much I admire originality, I only see movies with interesting title’s because I figure that the movie will be interesting with a title that inteeresting, The same goes for the novels I read, Example, The Thorn Birds, Silence of the lamb, By reason of Insanity, Shawshank Redemption. a mixture of novels and movies. Again, I salute you.
Hope your day is as interesting as yesterday’s even if it’s just to rest and watching a rerun of the 2009 Breeder Cup race.! or going to take in a movie, 42 will be my choice for you.
May Our Father In Heaven watch over you and yours and Bless you as you have Blessed me and mine, It is well. LOL.

Dont know if this was asked and answered somewhere in this huge blog, but any idea why Zenyatta and her foal are in a corral by themselves and not with other mares and foals? Do I not remember right that she and Coz were out with others almost immediately? Or was this done because the Moss’ were there and just wanted to see their horses….
Coz sure looks like his mama!!!
Anyone have pics (not facebook or tweeter) of Zenyatta’s little brother or know where I can see him?
maureen phi-llips
Hi Lynn Martin,
Good morning, am not horse savvy but I would think that maybe Prince ZT is still too young and cannot be with the older horses, the same reason I think Prince CoZmic One can’t go visit. No point for our young Prince to break a leg.
Like I said, am not sure, just guessing.
Have a great day, be Blessed.
Eileen
I do not believe Zenyatta would allow Coz near her nursing foal. Unfortunately she will probably not see Coz again. I have no personal experience but
I do not think Z would know Coz at this point. I think, but am not sure, he would just be another stallion to her. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I am curious about this.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
IIRC, it was a couple of weeks until 12Z was put out with other horses. He first went out with the son of Z’s pasture pal Spooky Minister. Later all were put in a herd. 13Z will be out with a friend soon if he is not already.

Hi Carol in Arkansas,
Thank you for the good News of your hubby’s discharge from the hospital, I actually love the way you put it, ‘retrieved him from the hospital’, so cute, and when you think about it retrieving from the hospital sounds better because it denotes rescuing from, and when you think about it no body wants to be in the hospital and feels ‘rescued’ when discharged. Just me thinking .
Anyway, glad he is on the mend and to God be the Glory. Aha, the Queen is also kicking up her hoof’s in celebration of your hubby feeling better. The young Prince’s also sends their best wishes.

Poor Black Onyx. He was my long shot but now a really really long shot. I like him because of his sire, Rock Hard Ten. He looks a lot like him. Don’t know how big he is but if he has his dad’s size he might be able to muscle his way through.

Orfevre, VyJack and me. Outside Post Jinx strikes me again. Tears and more Tears.
Max
Peggy (N). Stay positive and dry those tears. It was not the outside gate that lost the Arc for the Big O, but bad moves and luck at the end of the race. Some pundits think that an outside gate can be an advantage at Churchill if the horse gets a good start. Pray for some good luck from the racing gods for your V.

I was cringing for you when I heard the draw Peggy, but Max has some good points.
