Happy Friday!
Spring is in full swing at Lane’s End! We spent the earlier part of the week in Kentucky visiting Zenyatta and her two boys.
13Z is quite a frisky and independent colt. He’s equally interested in greeting visitors and cruising around the paddock with his mom. You’ll see them running together in the video at the end of this post.
Coz, who is now a very handsome yearling, was always waiting at the fence to greet us.
There are so many more photos from this visit, and we’ll be putting up brand new photo galleries next week.
Enjoy!

Very smart, Carol. My dad was the same way, he would ask for “socks”, and when they were brought, he would say, “Ok, let’s go!” Or he’d call and tell my brother the hospital had released him, so “Come and pick me up”, but my brother checked, and it wasn’t true.

Dear Zenyatta and Friends,
Hello everyone!! First let me thank you all for the heartfelt messages you sent me upon my Uncle Mac’s death. Your kind words of support were wonderful!!
Ann Maree, I hope you are continuing to heal. Your posts are great and I always look forward to reading them.
Marty R and Carol in Arkansas, my thoughts and prayers are with you both. May the loving light of God shine on your husbands and give you strength.
Sis Peggy, it was so sad to hear of Storm Cat’s passing. I like you tried to see him whenever I was in Kentucky. They were always very kind in their response, just a lack of staffing. The statue for his grave looks beautiful, so I will certainly be stopping by to pay my respects if I can.
My condolences go out to the family and fans of George Jones.
Trina, as always, your recent poem was wonderful.
I have been absolutely loving every photo of Zenyatta, Cozmic One and Z13 that have appeared. They have all been amazing. Cozmic one is looking more like his mother each day and Z13 is one gorgeous baby. Thank you to Jerry, Ann and Lanes End for everything.
To all of my Dumpling Friends, as always I wish you all much love and great happiness. To my beloved Zenyatta, sweet dreams, hugs and kisses.
Always, Dawn
I sent a message to Dottie and John on the day Barn 55 moved that I wanted to share with everyone. I know they will both do amazing in NY and at Belmont. At the same time it is very sad to see the situation develop with Hollywood Park and with their leaving California. To have such a historic track come to an end is tragic. I put together photos I have taken when I have visited. My last time there was the Friday after the Breeder’s Cup. I was all on my own and John gave me free access. When I walked around the end of the barn, Ebby was there to great me and I had some quality one on one time with she and Carlos. I was there for some time and I will always be thankful for the experience. No matter what ultimately happens to Barn 55 it will live on forever in it’s people. The Barn 55 crew is it’s heart and it will be forever preserved in their memories as well as the hundreds just like me who visited and were touched by the warmth of John and his amazing team.

Beautiful but also sad to see. Zenyatta’s shrine will be gone, all the statues and the Gold Cup wall, what will happen to these things. Dawn-Thanks so much for posting this. The visits to Barn 55 will live forever in my memory. Like you, I cannot believe that HP is going away. Dear Dawn,
So happy to hear from you. This Smilebox offering is just brilliant. Words fail me beyond saying that you have captured the wonderful memories of Hollywood Park and Barn 55. Though I have never seen it myself, it is very much a living, breathing thing to me as well as to countless others. Hollywood Park is historic and provides a lovely touchstone for so many — warm sepia tones of the distant past and also so many happy memories of more recent times. Yes, the way we were, but also the way we are.
I do so hope for a miracle for this special place.
Thank you and lots of hugs!

Mary
Good post! When I read Beth’s comment, I thought, geez louise. I didn’t know you had to be a horse expert to post here! :p I’ve been reading for a couple of years, and I’ve only just started making a few comments. I enjoy looking at the pictures of Z’s babies, mostly. Now, I am going to make a confession here…. *cringes*
I only heard about Zenyatta right before her very last race. Our local newspaper doesn’t carry much by way of horse racing news, and I guess I never paid much attention to fillies. But when I read about her, I was hoping she’d win her last race, and I even felt badly when she lost by a nose. I’m a pretty old gal myself, and first became a horse racing fan in the early 70’s, pulling for Riva Ridge, and then fell in love (as young pre-teen girls were apt to do) with the Red Super Horse Secretariart. I kept watching horse racing until Ruffian’s tragic ending, and then I had a hard time bringing myself to turn on a horse race again. But I did, and (of course), I was watching when Eight Belles went down. So now I prefer to wait until the Derby-Preakness-Belmont is over and then watch the replay, after hearing that there wasn’t a horrible accident. I guess I’m just too much of a sissy/worry-wart, and I can’t stand to see something tragic happen to such beautiful creatures.
What I know about horse racing could fit inside a thimble with room left over for a water polo game. But I still enjoy reading this website! :)
Thanks for being so nice, everyone! I plan on watching a replay of the Derby on Saturday, and keeping my fingers crossed for a safe race.
maureen phi-llips
Dear Mary,
Good morning, I enjoyed reading your post, and share most of your sentiments on horse racing, like you, I prefer not to watch during the actual race and just watch the replay when I know everyone came home safe. There are only 3 races I watched life:-
1–Rags To Riches duel with Curlin, which was the duel of all duels and I was so happy when she won, watched that replay sooo many times after that it was sickening. Where is Rags anyways?
2–The Queen’s Breeder’s Cup race of 2009 which took a lot of courage for me to watch because I didn’t want her to lose given that I felt badly that the race writer’s never gave her credit for anything. It was sweet victory and I always go back to watch the video over and over,
3–Watching my sweet boy Big Brown duel Cool Play at the Haskell Invitational after he lost the bid for the Triple crown. He is another horse of mine that I felt was unfairly treated and not given enough credit for his accomplishments by the sports writers, after all, he won 2 legs of the triple crown!, and if not for his foot that didn’t have time to heal, he would have won, We can only wish and pray, God decides and we can only hope we are on the same page as he is.
Have a wonderful day and I join you in wishing all the riders and their rides a safe trip and best of luck to all their connections. Its not easy. It is well though.

Mary,
You are certainly not the only one who heard of Zenyatta just before her last race. There are plenty of us here, and before I fell in love with her, I barely knew a horse from a dog. If I need to know something, I just ask and I can always count on an informative answer from the good folks who post here.

Keep posting, Mary. We enjoy your company.

I enjoyed your post Mary, and laughed at that thimbleful with the water-polo game. I came late to the party as well, although a bit earlier than you, so I got to see Zenny once in person. I don’t believe Sandy “barely knew a horse from a dog”, but it made me laugh. I am not a heck of a lot more knowledgeable, but have picked up a thing or two from reading here for a few years now. The most important thing I know about horses, is that I love Zenyatta. What else is there to know, to qualify on this site? Thanks for posting, and like Terry said, stick around.

AJ from CA
Really sad about HP’s bleak future. Seems the leadership in Los Angeles have done a pretty good job in driving business out of the city and not supporting historical landmarks such as HP that have made the city famous. I just drove by there last night really admiring the beautiful art deco architecture and it just breaks my heart that it may soon be replaced by a Walmart or something similar. No more Barn 55 or Zenyatta Way to bring future horseracing fans to visit.

@ Dawn–Thanks for sharing the beautiful tribute you did for John and Dottie–I’m sure it brought on tears–it qwas really lovely! Hope you got my phone message about your recent loss,I was so sorry to hear about it. Hope to talk to you soon!
I am flying down to Orange County this weekend ,(Thursday night, actually) to see my grand-daughter,Nina,star in the musical version of “Legally Blonde”,being presented this weekend and next at Golden West College. She is playing the part that Reese Witherspoon played in the movie and is just having a ball! I can’t wait to see her on opening night! I saw her do the lead in Bye,Bye Birdie two years ago, when she was a senior in high school–now she has been majoring in Musical Theatre in college for two years so it will be fun to see her show all she has learned. Will see it on Friday and Saturday nights and fly back here on Sunday–I can’t believe I’m getting to do it!!
Am so excited about the Derby too–GO MIKIE!!! And GO ROSIE!! Hope they finish 1-2!!!
Barnaby and Traveller moved back up to the little ranch in East Fork on Saturday. They were so happy to get out of the trailer and see that they were back “home”–I know that they think the place is theirs–even though it belongs to our dear friend Rita!!! They took off at a gallop as soon as we turned them loose–they ran around like wild things for several minutes before settling down. Then, when they saw Rancher Tom’s trailer headed down the road they ran toward it,as though they were chasing it and then stood watching it as it disappeared down the road. I took a picture of then looking after it which I am going to sen d to him–I think it will touch his heart to see them . After they settled down,we groomed them and rode them in the arena. Barnaby was so good in just his halter!! I am still going to get him one of the bitless bridles, but am happy riding him in the halter until it comes. It’s good practice just concentrating on using legs and voice encouragement. Loved the story about “The Perfect Bit”–that’s basically what I’m doing now. I tell people that Barnaby said ,”I don’t need no stinkin’ bit!” Have not decided just which bitless bridle I’m getting him yetI’m going to do a little more research on them.
Didn’t tell you all the funny thing I did week before last, coming back into the barn after riding in the outdoor arena at the Susie Q–as we were coming back into the barn,I was leading Barnaby and I didn’t get my right foot out of his way fast enough and he stepped on the side of my foot. I had already stepped forward with my left and my right was trapped,so.I “gracefully” fell down on my left knee and then my hands and face!!! What a klutz!! Of course, there were a couple of really expert gals grooming their horses as I went splat!! Barnaby was SO good—instead of panicking and running over me,which many horses would have done,he stopped still and stood quietly as I sat up,laughing at myself!! As I went to get up,he lowered his head, giving me his halter to steady myself with as I stood up,which I found really amazing!! The ladies who saw the whole thing were really impressed with his calm manners. He really DOES look out for me–we just get closer and closer and I marvel at the miracle of him every day!!!
Love to all–and I pray for a perfect day for the sweetest horse family on earth–may they all have nothing but sunshine on their backs, and soft breezes to ruffle their manesas they run in the KY spring!!!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio) PUR, PUJ

@ Sandy–You are right! Last year they didn’t come up to East Fork until June 1! This year, the snow melted earlier and Rita’s place dried out much earlier–and–she was lonesome for them so she asked if we could bring them early! Isn’t that great?? Instead of their being something she puts up with on her place (where she used to have 8 horses) she LOVES having them there! We are SO blessed–and so are the horses!!
Thanks Barb!! I really think that when Barnaby’s dad’s widow sent all of the horses to the sale, she hoped that loving buyers would buy them for pleasure horses. Unfortunately, the killers were the high bidders. Thank God for Marlene Dodge, who spotted them and knew they should be saved. Barnaby’s mom was saved also and is at a rescue in So. California.Another relative of his passed away at the Fallon feed lot–so sad. He is a blessed boy and I do believe he knows it. Im sure that he realized that the trucks he saw leaving that place packed with crowded and frightened animals were not leaving for good places. My friend,Sue,Traveller’s mom, still marvels at how fast he recognized that I was,in fact, his person, when he arrived here.It was as though he had known I was coming and when he saw me he said to himself,”there she is”.
@ Terry Crow–“Man of La Mancha” is such a great show. When I was in it up here,I was in the chorus (they just needed my high notes for the big numbers)–I played an old hagwho was in the prison scenes–I never looked worse on the stage!!! I deliberately made myself look just awful–blacked out teeth, gray stuff in my wildly unkempt hair–it was a blast!
Terry Crow
Sue-Thanks for the post. Man of La Mancha is a staple for student plays because there are so few sets involved. Come, look into my mind and see him. His name–Don Quixote de La mancha! I can still see Richard Kiley in the role. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Terry, I saw Rickard Kiley in “Man of La Mancha” at the Music Center, in my teens.
Terry Crow
I knew Kiley mainly from western films and was shocked at his singing voice. I try to see every version that I can. One time, it was going to be an all-black cast, with Marilyn McCoo as Dulcinea and Robert Guilleaume, I probably am not spelling his name correctly, he used to play Benson on TV, as Don Quixote. At the last minute, the current star of Phantom of the Opera quit doing the show and Mr Guilleaume won the part of the Phantom. It was a last minute thing, and no other black actor was available. Instead, the producers convinced Ken Howard, who played the coach in the White Shadow TV show to do the part of Don Quixote. It was kind of strange, as he is one of the whitest white men there is. He actually was quite good in the role.

I know they respond to your love, Judy B. Even when they snatch a hat or two.

heres a funny joke joke to end the day:
One evening a husband, thinking he was being funny, said to his wife,
“Perhaps we should start washing your clothes in Slim Fast.
Maybe it would take a few inches off of your butt!!”
His wife was not amused, and decided that she simply couldn’t let such a comment go unnoticed.
The next morning the husband took a pair of his underwear out of his drawer.
“What the heck is this??” he said to himself as a little “dust” cloud appeared when he shook them out.
“Maria!,” he hollered into the bathroom,
“Why did you put baby powder in my underwear?”
She replied with a giggle…”It’s not baby powder…… It’s ‘Miracle Grow’!”
have a good nite Zsters
god bless, hugs/prayers
