Happy Friday!
Spring is in full swing at Lane’s End! We spent the earlier part of the week in Kentucky visiting Zenyatta and her two boys.
13Z is quite a frisky and independent colt. He’s equally interested in greeting visitors and cruising around the paddock with his mom. You’ll see them running together in the video at the end of this post.
Coz, who is now a very handsome yearling, was always waiting at the fence to greet us.
There are so many more photos from this visit, and we’ll be putting up brand new photo galleries next week.
Enjoy!

Good morning Z fans. So nice to read your posts and I appreciate the George Jones comments. He was ALWAYS my favorite and no one will ever compare to his voice or his music–ever. My fav–The Grand Tour. Dunno what’s happened to good country music. You could line up all today’s CMA winners and not one of them could sing even one line better than Jones.
While viewing the pics again this morning, I am so captivated by the one with CoZ and Ann. I can’t get over his expression as he looks at Ann so intently. I love it. Oh, what I’d give to just touch his little face one time.
Darlene Daniels
I agree with what you said about George and Coz. Hugs.
Terry Crow
I would categorize today’s “country” artists as pop rather than country. One could not make that comment about George Jones, he definitely was pure country all the way. George, if I was still drinking, I would toast you with some White Lighnin.
Ann NC
TC GP, I am sure there were plenty that did that toast. Look out.
Thank goodness there are some genuine string pickers out there too.
Terry Crow
You are right, Ann. But, a man like Earl Scruggs will be difficult to replace.
Marshall (NC broad)
A big AMEN, Terry!
I did toast him Friday night at our Girls’ Night Out gathering!
I am so happy that you are posting again! Hugs
Marshall (NC broad)
Oops!
My toast to George was with a Margarita, not white lightnin’!!
I am pretty sure that the Possum would not mind.
I agree with you about Earl Scruggs, too.
Cheers

George was a “one of a kind” county music legend. I recently heard his duet with Dolly on youtube “The Blues Man” and loved it.
It’s hard to say good bye to those endowed with special talent. God Bless.

Second British Trainer Admits to Steroid Use
By Blood-Horse Staff Monday, April 29, 2013 10:32 AM
Britain’s anabolic steroid scandal continued to spread April 29 when Newmarket trainer Gerard Butler admitted to using steroids on his own horses, according to a report by British newspaper The Independent.
Butler has said he didn’t think the medication was a problem because he included the injections, given for injured joints, in his medical records that had been reviewed by the British Horseracing Authority.
“It did not cross my mind that there could be any problem with this medication,” Butler also told The Independent. “And, judging from the fact that the BHA said nothing about it when they saw my medical book, it does not seem to have crossed their minds, either.”

That’s surprising because Snow Fairy had a similar run in after her race last year. The meds hadn’t completely left her system before the race, but they disqualified her months after the win…
As much emphasis as there is on clean racing, I’m surprised that the racing stewards hadn’t said anything to him earlier. This situation just gets more and more interesting by the moment.

Trainer Baffert to Sit Out Kentucky Derby 139
By Ron Mitchell, The Blood-Horse Updated: Monday, April 29, 2013 10:41 AM
Three-time Kentucky Derby (gr. I)-winning trainer Bob Baffert said April 29 he will not have a starter in this year’s May 4 classic, noting that none of the contenders he had early in the season would be competitive in the 1 1/4-mile race.

Good for Bob. So many times trainers and owners push horses that are either not mature or do not have the talent into the Derby and we never hear of them again. The great Man O War did not run in the Derby because they thought he was not mature enough at that stage of his development and look what he did. Again, good for Bob.

Track to the future
Failed and retired racehorses get primed for a career change at the Finger Lakes racetrack
By MELISSA WHITWORTH New York Post April 27, 2013
As a racehorse, City Mint’s heart just wasn’t in it. When the rich brown thoroughbred made her debut at the Finger Lakes Casino and Racetrack in Farmington, NY, last summer she came in dead last. In her second race a month later, she had a repeat performance. The horse’s winnings from the two races were a paltry $478, not enough to cover even one month’s board at most barns.
“She was not fit for the sport,” admits Leslie Bensi, City Mint’s breeder and former owner. “She did not want to be a racehorse.”

Trina Nagele in So Cal --PUR
More from Keta’s great link (thanks, Keta!): In August, as part of her post-racetrack life, City Mint will compete in the Extreme Retired Racehorse Makeover Barrel Race in Negley, Ohio. Barrel racing is a Western-style rodeo event where horses weave at high speeds between obstacles. It’s typically the province of thick, heavily muscled quarter horses, not featherweight, fine-boned thoroughbreds fresh off the track…. Though she’s been training for the rodeo sport specifically, DeSain says the horse could be a success in any number of disciplines. “She’d make a great jumper, a great trail horse,” she enthuses. “There is nothing she can’t do, and she’s capable of anything.”
Ann NC
Get it, City Mint.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful story. She sounds like a sweetheart.

I’ve been catching up on the blog messages, gone the weekend working at our spring “Paws for Treasure” rummage sale for the humane society. It seemd to go just great but we won’t know till the last penny is counted.
I just love these pictures of our Z family, Lanes End looks like horse heaven………so beautful with the trees in bloom. Zenny and Red look fabulous and our CoZ is truly so beautiful. I sure hope we he gets sent to training someone will keep us posted with news and Pictures of this handsome boy.
Hope all the horses and jockeys are safe after the races this weekend……am rooting for Orb and Revolutionary.
While looking at a video on you tube I can across this one of a horse and comedians act……..it is hysterical……..I can’t believe what he gets this horse to do. Hope you enjoy it.

Trina Nagele in So Cal --PUR
High paw to you, Sue, for volunteering to help your humane society–I hope the rummage sale was indeed a great success. Thanks for the entertaining video. That’s one well-trained, cooperative horse!
Mary
I’ve picked Revolutionary as my favorite in the Derby, too! (I pick my ‘winning’ horse very scientifically… I look at all their pictures, and then decide who I think is the prettiest… LOL) That’s why I picked Hanson last year, but my method apparently leaves something to be desired.
Terry Crow
Hansen may have the last laugh on all of them in the breeding shed. A most striking individual. I am curious as to what color his babies will be.
Pati- Derby Dreamin'
It’s ok. I picked Union Rags last year for almost the same reason, aside from the Matz, and connections bit, I liked his blaze and just him overall.
I like Orb. Churchill Downs clockers report he is slinking around the track like a cat, quick and agile; just gliding along on the surface. I was on the band wagon way before the FL Derby, and I’m glad that, from the reports, he’s taken to the surface.
Max
Pati. Here’s something on Orb for you. Also a bit for Oxbow and Will Take Charge fans. I like Ox because of Paynter.
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/videos/12502/kentucky-derby-news-minute-4292013?section=triple-crown
Pati- Derby Dreamin'
There are so many this year that you can’t help but want to cheer for them all. The Paynter connection is awesome, but Oxbow has had such bad luck, that it’s time for him to have a break out performance, so you might score big there Max.
Orb looks great. I’m deflated that Treasury Bill didn’t pan out, but psyched that Orb is in there. Always like seeing those famous colors in the winner’s circle.
Terry Crow
Union Rags was my pick also. This year, Orb is my choice and I am boxing him in the exacta with Normandy Invasion.
Pati- Derby Dreamin'
I’m thinking Orb/Revolutionary after looking at both of their works; Orb from this morning. Orb dusted the stablemate and burned through his work. Revolutionary has been making an impression training, and he has bad trip experience already under his belt. In his win before the Louisiana Derby, he got in so much trouble, you would have thought it was a 20 horse field, rather than seven, but he won anyway. Kind of like I Want Revenge from a few years back.
I’m still on the fence though about whether or not I want my dad to play more than one for me. ;-) (But you didn’t hear that.) I am torn between Oxbow, Will Take Charge, and Verrazano for second. UGH. Why can’t it just be a three horse field with the three horses being Verrazano, Orb, and Revolutionary? It would be so much easier to decide.
Pati- Derby Dreamin'
*second and third. Include Revolutionary into that list.
shirleeinindy
Mary, wish I could narrow mine down to just one. My heart gets in the way of my head especially in the Derby. Last year I picked Union Rags and stuck with him through the Belmont. Have not picked a winner since Smarty. Did make some money on Mucho Macho Man. I do like Orb but will find it hard to pick against Rosie and MyLute. Also, would love to see Wayne Lucas win one more. Hopefully post position will clear this up a litte. Oh, and also like the name Black Onyx! Guess I could try getting a win ticket on all of them and hope a long shot comes in.
Marshall (NC broad)

Happy 80th birthday to Texan Willie Nelson, musician and co-founder of Farm Aid. Yesterday he held a benefit concert in Austin to fund the West, TX fire department. High hoof, Willie!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Many may not know that Willie is from Abbot, TX, just up the road from us and West. Some of the Abbot first responders rushed to the scene of the explosion. Hugs to you, Trina.

Before he hit it big, Willis was a DJ out here on radio station KFOX in Long beach. Rumor is that, because he needed money at the time, he sold a song he wrote named The Night Life for $20.00 and it became a huge hit.
Pati- Derby Dreamin'
Wow, what a stroke of luck.
Terry Crow
It was for the guy who bought it. His name escapes me. If you want to see something funny, go to you tube and check out the 1967 version of this song sung by Willie at the Opry. You won’t believe how he looked then.
Marshall (NC broad)
Yes, high hoof to Willie! My favorite red-headed stranger (with two legs)!
Love Willie Nelson — he has a GOOD heart!
Cheers and Happy Birthday! By the way, I heard on the radio today (on Willie’s Roadhouse) that he was born on the 29th, but they didn’t get the birth registered until the 30th. When he signed up for the military (Air Force, I think), they told him that his birthday was the 30th, the registered date. Ever since, he has celebrated his birthday on both days! Hope he has many more!

Yeah, there was a very interesting segment on Mr. Nelson on 60 Minutes. He really is an interesting personality aside from being famous.
How do the Texans here, feel about fellow Texan Lyle Lovett, I think he’s pretty good too?!

I though this Zenyatta website was a forum open to everyone-how come when I ever I make a comment, or ask an intelligent question, it never gets put on this website?
It is very rude and unfair. Most of these people leaving comments on this forum know nothing about horses, breeding and ask the most annoyingly stupid questions and make such comments that further showcases their ignorance about horses.
Sadly Team Zenyatta, this website is now just being used a social nework device for a bunch of “horsey snobs” and know-nothing Zenyatta groupies. Very disappointing, but I still will remain a fan of Zenyatta and wish the best for her and her sons.
Pati- Derby Dreamin'
I’m sorry you feel that way but last I checked, this site was open to everyone, not just the people who know every working of the horse. The Ask the Experts column is fairly done, and LE answers as many questions as possible.
As for the “know nothing groupies” and “horsey snobs” comment you have decided to make, there is a better way to express discontent without taking childish jabs at people who don’t know as much a you. This is a site for her fans to come enjoy the pictures, and to learn something new. A lot of people who never loved racing before became fans because of Zenyatta, and most of them don’t know all there is to know about the horse, and neither do the people who work with them everyday for umpteenth years; that’s why there are still equine illnesses and laminitis is still relatively uncurable. We all have much to learn, and this is one of the sites to do it. If you hate the questions so much, just don’t read them. No one is asking you to put yourself under pointless stress and agitation reading the “pointlessly stupid and ignorant” questions and responses. I, for one, like reading what LE and others have to say. You are never too old to learn something new.

Such pearls of wisdom, Pati. Bless you and thank you from one of the “ignorant ones”. You are very correct in your observation that we are never too old to learn

Barbara Wood (Texas)
Beth–I am truly sorry you feel that way. I don’t believe anyone here feels superior to anyone else. All are welcome, as long as our comments are in the spirit of kindness we appreciate here. Not all of us have horse backgrounds. Some of just just love them. Some of us try to save as many as possible from neglect and mistreatment. Some of us ask “dumb” questions, but that is how we learn. And some of us have worked with them for a lifetime and could teach courses on it.
I don’t know why nothing you send ever gets printed, but it did happen to me once last week. Maybe you should contact the blog administrator to see if something is wrong. Your computer must be weoking, as this post came through loud and clear.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Perhaps the problem is with your computer or something. If you are having technical difficulties you can go to the Forum, and post under “Forum Tips and Guidelines,” and Kylea will help you out.
This blog is not heavily moderated. One has to post something truly egregious to be booted off. If one is truly posting intelligent comments and questions, they’ll show up. Heck, if one is making stupid comments and asking dumb questions, they’ll show up. Just don’t be nasty. Calling people “snobs” and “know-nothing groupies” is not very nice and doesn’t give anyone incentive to treat you or your comments with respect. (But notice that your comment posted anyway.)
This blog has been in operation in one form or another for years, going back to the Diary that started in Autumn of 2010. Some of us have been posting for a long time and have gotten to know each other, so yes, there is a social character to the blog comments and forums. You are free to skip any posts that don’t interest you. We all do.

Laura J-So that is why nobody responds to me. I’ll have to tell my friends the Vanderbilts about this.

You are quite simply the BEST! The Vanderbilts? We had some of them in our fair state; they had a little mountain place in Asheville. I don’t think they had any skunk hats, Ann, but that would explain why Terry wears mink when traveling with the Vanderbilts. When in Rome…

Dearest Beth,
I am so sorry you feel badly about your questions not being put on the site, I really don’t think it’s any thing personal or is it because you are asking unintelligent questions. As you know, when a lot of people ask questions, they can only pick one to answer, its like playing the lotto, the ticket that gets picked is the lucky ticket as there are so many to pick from. So please don’t be upset or leave. My Z family are the nicest people ever and trust me, most time’s no body seems to notice what I put out there but it doesn’t mean they did not read it. It might not be an interesting post thats all, I don’t take it personal. I too am horse illiterate, and that’s okay, I come here to read some of the posts and even I, don’t get to respond to most.
Any ways, you are always welcome, and the Queen and her handsome adorable Princes welcome you too. It is well, and it is going to be a better day tomorrow, cheer up. Have a Blessed rest of the day, LOL.

Thank you, Z’s Web Team, for checking this out! Very nice of you to be on top of it. High hoof!
Zenyen
Not that I condone Beth’s approach in this but I am wondering if she is referring to the “Ask the Experts” side of the blog.
I say this because I too have posed questions to the blog the past two times it opened and neither question was picked for publish.
Perhaps, if such would be possible, a brief explanation of your criteria and or an idea of “We get X number of questions but can only address Y number” may help people understand why they’re submissions are not chosen?
Thank you all for the hard work you put into maintaining this site and the beautiful pictures you have provided for us. Team Z and Lane’s End has been remarkably gracious and it is sad that someone feels the need to strike so sharply over something that most likely, has a reasonable explanation.
shirleeinindy
I have posted on the Ask The Experts also and my questions have not been chosen. As I understand it, they just select a few of the questions to be answered. They can’t individually answer all of us.
zenyen
Which makes perfect sense. The point of confusion may be that in their request for submissions they never make that statement.
The verbiage reads as “Still have a question? Ask it now!” Which can make it read as they intend to respond to all questions submitted.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Zenyatta’s Web Team:
Thank you. Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC broad)
I agree, Judy.
Thanks to the Zenyatta Web Team! I think Maureen’s observation that the questions submitted are numerous and therefore, the one chosen is like the lotto pick is accurate. Keep your question(s) coming, and don’t feel slighted if your inquiry isn’t picked right away.
All the best
tony
Beth, I cannot imagine that anything you would post on this site would be intentionally ignored and not printed…unless it did not fall within the guidelines established for users and I doubt that is the case. Zenny and her team are all about inclusion, that means everyone regardless of their knowledge of horses. So many of us have learned a tremendous amount of “stuff” about horses and racing simply by being part of this great group. It’s just a great place to learn, share and bond. Hopefully, you will continue to visit and post. Everyone is welcome.
KK
interesting,
comments Beth.
At times a very empty site, so unlike Zenyatta.

Every time I read these post, I am amazed at the good feelings to all; there is never any nastiness. It is so uplifting and happy to be in this place; it’s Zenyatta Love sprinkled on all of us in Z World. Ann Moss once said that every time she came to see Zenny, rather racing or just to visit, there was always a white feather somehow at her feet, falling from the sky or something, but always there; then she said she was a gift from heaven. I really believe she is; we all love horses, but look at the impact she has had on so many (even people who didn’t follow racing, even people who are around race horses all the time) they all are in awe of her, waiting for hours just for a glimpse of her, and then all with a smile, acting kiddy because they touched her or saw her. Then there is her reaction to the people, so loving and gentle (the complete opposite then when she was getting ready to race. I have pictures, which some of you may have, of a woman in a wheelchair (during her racing days) and a baby put right up to her face( at LE) and in both cases, she is so gentle. Where has anyone seen these things before? Mario (who knows her best) said there will never be another; you can see how much he misses her. One horse, such an impact on so many; YES, SHE IS A GIFT FROM HEAVEN, AND WE ARE ALL BLESSED TO SHARE HER LOVE WITH HER, HER EXTENDED TEAM, AND EACH OTHER. HUGS AND KISSES TO YOU ALL IN ZENYATTA’S LOVING WORLD!!

I’ve been caught up with that “thankless task” aka housework so I’ve been very late to check in, and even slower after reading everyone’s interesting posts.
First off, I must thank Team Z and the fabulous Kyle Acebo for these uplighting and exquisite photos. I find that Cozmi is really starting to look like Zenny, although I continue to see a little of Bernie there too. But he sure looks like one Bernie that didn’t get that fire-cracker temperament, thank goodness. And I LOVE that he got Zenny’s auburn fringe on his forelock. This is one of Zenny’s features that I love most!
The little guy. Well, like lots here, I think he’s a heartbreaker. But then I’ve always been a sucker for a chestnut, if he stays as such. And those big, dark eyes. He’s a absolute stunner!!!
On the British front, I was thrilled with Sprinter Sacre & the great mare, Quevega’s, march to victory @ Punchestown recently. And now on to the flat racing.
Derby thoughts: Even though I love then all, my heart rides with Shug & Orb. I agree with Haskin: Shug only comes to a big race when he thinks he’s got a great horse. And he’s never won the Derby before. I’ve loved Shug since ever and it would be a thrill to find him in the winner’s circle! Derby time — LOVE IT! All the pageantry, hopes & dreams.
As for the Oaks, given the heartbreak that Stonestreet has had with our sweet Rachel, I’m rooting for I dream of Julia. But wasn’t it fabulous to re-memory Rachel’s Oaks? The stuff of Secretariat and I fell in love with her right there & then. And it was wonderful to see the short video of her looking so well and then to see her daughter looking so elegant. Just like her Mama (although Ojos is without question to be complimented too).
Well, I’m off to start dinner.
But I’m sending a high hoof filled with affection to all of you, plus kisses to my Big Girl and her boys.

GEEZ…I meant “uplifting”!!! That’s the second time I’ve done that. LOL!

Black Caviar’s little sister moves to town
Written By AAP April 29, 2013 – 06:00 PM
As Australian racing loses Black Caviar and All Too Hard, their half sister Belle Couture is ready to begin her career in earnest.
After pre-training out of town, the two-year-old will arrive at Danny O’Brien’s Flemington stable on Tuesday in preparation for her racecourse debut late in the season.
Speaking on behalf of her owners BC3 Thoroughbreds, Simon Marshall said connections had been patient with the filly and were thrilled with her progress.
“Slowly but surely she has told us she wasn’t in any rush to be pushed and we’ve just followed her lead,” Marshall told racingvictoria.net.au.

I’m a little behind on the posts, so please forgive me! Shirlee, I just read your comments about the song Run for the Roses. I’ve always wondered about that! Anyone who lives here knows that Central KY is the Bluegrass region, not Western KY. You’re the only one I know of that’s noticed that besides me. I still love that song though. I always say Central Kentucky when I sing it.
Carol in Arkansas, I’m sorry your husband’s in the hospital. I’ll keep both of you in my prayers.
Barbara Wood, I didn’t know Willie Nelson grew up so close to you! That’s awesome. He’s a true legend. It’s hard to believe he’s 80. It seems like all the great ones are leaving us, with George Jones passing away last week. A guy I work with said he saw George Jones in concert at a bar many years ago and he said that he was only about 5’5, but that he had 3 inch platform shoes on! You don’t think of superstars like that as being so small in stature.

I’ve noticed!
I think he went with “western” because it sounds better when sung.
SunnyB.
I think Willie Nelson is pretty short, too, but sings real big :)

Hope everyone can see this. Three Chimneys posted this pic on their FB page. It cracked me up.

Great, great funny photo. Love that horse. It’s that Crescent Moon Guy – who me? – look.
Point of Entry will be racing against Wise Dan on Derby day on turf at Keeneland. Like them both.

Well howdy Beth,
It was just yesterday when I was thinking how nice it is to come and read everyone’s thoughts and feelings wihout any sarcasm. Even on Christian forums, people can be so nasty. But not on Zenyatta’s site. Then I read your post.
Let me tell you, missy, me being referred to as a “know-nothing Zenyatta groupie” is one of the nicer things I’ve been called in life. I’m only thankful that equine knowledge is not a requirement to enjoying this site. I’m proud to be a Z groupie and getting more educated on horse facts every day. I do have one o’ them there college degrees, though, which includes some psychology. Thus knowing when a person puts down others, it’s to fill a deficit in their their own low self esteem.
Love to my Z cyber family,
a proud Z-groupie
