Happy Sunday!
We can’t believe 13Z was born almost two weeks ago. We hear from the great people at Lane’s End that he and his mom are happy and healthy.
Alys sent us a few close-ups of the little one out in the paddock this week, and we wanted to share those along with some more photos from our last trip. We’ll be heading back to the farm in a week to visit Zenyatta and both of her colts (and to take lots of photos!).
And don’t forget 12Z! Here’s a video we shot on a gray morning during our last trip. Watch him take off across the paddock to join the rest of his herd.
Enjoy!

Solis Buys Top Two on Inglis’ Opening Day
By Myra Lewyn, The Blood-Horse Updated: Tuesday, April 16, 2013 11:46 AM
Alex Solis II’s United States-based Solis Bloodstock spent $1.26 million to acquire the two highest-priced horses at the super select session of the Inglis Easter broodmare sale in Australia April 16, including Australian group III winner One World for the top price of Aust$720,000 ($746,721 in U.S. funds).
The session-topping mare, a 12-year-old by Danehill, was offered in foal to Darley’s Central Kentucky sire Lonhro , Australia’s leading sire in 2011. Consigned by Coolmore Stud, agent, she is the dam of 2011 Patinack Farm Blue Diamond Prelude Stakes (Aus-III) winner One Last Dance.
Solis Bloodstock went to the day’s second-highest price of Aust$540,000 ($560,156 U.S.) to secure Irish stakes-placed Diamond Necklace, an Unbridled’s Song half sister to European champion and sire Shamardal. She was offered in foal to Darley’s Australian sire Commands, currently third on that nation’s general sire list.

Black Caviar retires and Rachel Alexandra is loose in the paddock! Rachel update
She’s Out! Rachel Alexandra Continues Recovery with Paddock Turnout Time
The Jurga Report: Horse Health Headlines April 17, 2013 PHOTO
It’s spring. There is no place in America where the grass is greener or the sky bluer than the horse country outside of Lexington, Kentucky. Yesterday was not a day to be stuck in a stall.
One of the most famous racehorses in the world took some landmark independent steps yesterday when she spent a few hours doing what horse do best: grazing on the fresh, tender spring grass. Champion mare Rachel Alexandra has been recovering from complications of giving birth to a filly in February, and has spent the last two months under close supervision both during her hospitalization at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital and at home.
Yesterday’s two hours of freedom will be increased gradually as she continues to recover.

I am going to learn to do the “nicking” thing….going to check and see who works well with our lovely Nelly….I am trying to see when the breeding season starts down there and I think its about August….is that right?…because all babies birthdays are the 1st of july…please help me in this…now who worthy of her is going to be there…
Lonhro…..Americain….Animal Kingdom….Bernie? so very much research to do…does Bernie shuttle?

Dear Carol:
My beloved Bernie usually shuttles to Australia at the end of breeding season in Kentucky. Hugs, JB

on a totally different front…because I was not paying proper attention at the time…
Frankel and Nelly top two in the world last year…right…who was number 3?
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Carol:
Here’s a World Thoroughbred Ranking List that places BC third. There are no doubt some others that place her second. Hugs, JB
Dear Max and Peggy:
Wise Dan is ranked 5th and Orfevre 6th in the World. Hugs, JB
http://www.horseracingintfed.com/resources/2012Rankings/2012_WTR_Overview.asp
Max
JudyB. I think that the latest 2013 rankings would have Black Caviar in first. Frankel’s retired so that he is out of the rankings as she will be soon.
I have to question how Exceleration can rank ahread of Wise Dan. Danny won decisively over Excelebration on turf in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Dan also runs on all surfaces so that he is amazingly versatile like very few others.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
This is only one List of Ranking and it is from 2012. I’m sure you are right and that 2013’s List would have BC in 1st and probably Wise Dan ranked higher. Hugs, JB

I am SO glad to hear that her connections have decided to retire Black Caviar!!!! She has (and HAS had) nothing left to prove and is SO deserving of this!
My good friend in Adelaide, Australia is overjoyed as well.
May she live a long, joyous and productive life as a broodmare — can’t wait to see that first colt or filly by Frankel!
Happy Retirement Black Beauty! We have loved watching you run!
carol in arkansas
I thought the announcement said Frankel was not under consideration….or some article..oh well…they may want a proven sire ..another source said looking for a top sprinter …time will tell…
Nelly’s connections may not want her to travel….

the standard here in the north seems to be for the stud fee …and the foal must stand and nurse….but read this morning that in the south…that the standard is that the foal is ok at 45 days old….is this true? or did I get bad info? if true, seems that Nelly’s folks would definitely want a proven sire….so who are the top Australian sires the last 5 yrs…seems to me that would be a good “short list”
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Carol:
Speaking of proven sires, I found this article the other day when I was looking for something else. I never knew this story about Secretariat. I wonder how many of the Dumplings and Z’sters know about Big Red’s first foal. Hugs, JB

Glad to see Rachel doing well. At least, as far as we can see. Does anyone out there know if she will ever be bred again? Does the kind of injury she had make pregnancy and foaling too dangerous? Is her system never to be “strong” again? Sad if she cannot produce again, but her safety is certainly more important.
Max
@Sheena. Hot Snap came from behind today with Tom Queally aboard to win the Nell Gynn at Newmarket. Great win by this filly for Juddemonte and Henry Cecil. She will probably go on now to the 1000 Guineas? Love her name.

Glad that Rachel A is up and about. To God be the glory. How is her little fisty tyke doing?
Good luck to Black Caviar and her connections. Am sure she will have a wonderful life and have champions of her own. We thank her for all the thrills she gave us. She will truly be missed.

Best of luck to Black Caviar she deserves the best, like Zenyatta and Rachel, leaving the game soundly. Had I not followed Rachel I would never have found Zenyatta. I was so torn with the thought of them racing each other. So glad they never did. I love them both equally. I’m hoping Rose to Gold does well in the KO. Go Girl Power.
Z13’s blaze reminds me of Affirmed’s. Regardless, he will be his own little man, when the time in right.
May everyone have a Blessed Day.

Oh-I LOVE these photos!! There is something really special about Little Red! When he looks straight at the camera, there is the wisdom of the ages in that face—he already has “the look of eagles” in his countenance. I must confess,I rather hope he stays red–I have always had a thing for red horses–ever since seeing the movie of “National Velvet” when the Pi was a chestnut. (My jumper,an OTTB,looked exactly like the horse in the movie, when his crooked blaze going over the same eye–his racing name was Regaro,or maybe Reggaro–but his barn mane was Lucky when I got him). I always thought it was so odd that the horse in the movie was a chestnut,as,in the book, the reason the horse was called The Pi is that he was a piebald—black and white!! Little Red reminds me of how Barnaby must have looked when he was born. Though he is a light dun,he has a lot of red in his coat, and ,in the sunshine,in the summer, when his hair is short,he gets a bit of that “copper penny” look about him.
Trina Nagele in So Cal --PUR
Lovely post, Sue. I too always wondered why they used a chestnut for the Pie, but he looked handsome, didn’t he. Hugz to you and Barnaby John.

dear max just read about hot snap she’s favourite for the 1000 guineas wonderful for sir henry something to look forward to with frankel and now black caviar gone as well think tilly le ginge lives at an ex racehorse rehoming centre she often asks why she couldn’t have been as great as kauto she’ll become more famous now she knows kauto and Neptune hugs sheena
Max
Sheena. Hot Snap runs like Z. She came from dead last to win. She’s a very beautiful chestnut. Apparently she has only come into her own in the last month. That is some impressive maiden performance against the favorite, Sky Lantern. Glad for Henry Cecil that he has another good contender.
Tilley is a mystery. Her hat looks like the ones which certain dressage or Grand Prix horses wear. Kauto is having lots of fun with her. He said today that he has a secret love for Black Caviar. A month ago his secret love was Quevega. Ha! Ha!
Trina Nagele in So Cal --PUR
Re: Black Caviar retired–
Glad she’s safe, but I’m still sad that we won’t see her putting all the boys away again.
High hoof and long life to Black Caviar!
sheena.davies(wales)
dear max sir henry always had a way with the fillies!! seems kauto is turning out the same with all the loves in his life hope tilly wont be jealous!! she can always turn to Neptune saw a pic of hot snap a real beauty!! hugs sheena
Max
Sheena. I read an article which said that Hot Snap is a large filly, which may explain why she ran from last. If she’s like Z, she needs time to race. Also see that she is Midday’s sister. The boys run tomorrow at Newmarket.
Tilly could do a lot worse than Nipper. He’s a handsome gray, and a Grand National winner. I see that Kauto is still working on his DVD.

dear judy have a peaceful night’s sleep God bless love and hugs sheena
