Happy Sunday!
We can’t believe 13Z was born almost two weeks ago. We hear from the great people at Lane’s End that he and his mom are happy and healthy.
Alys sent us a few close-ups of the little one out in the paddock this week, and we wanted to share those along with some more photos from our last trip. We’ll be heading back to the farm in a week to visit Zenyatta and both of her colts (and to take lots of photos!).
And don’t forget 12Z! Here’s a video we shot on a gray morning during our last trip. Watch him take off across the paddock to join the rest of his herd.
Enjoy!

Up the Backstretch: Smith secures chance for second Derby win
By Don Agriss, Sports Network — The Sports Network Published: April 16, 2013
Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith has just one victory in the Kentucky Derby on his resume. That win came eight years ago when he rode 50-1 longshot Giacomo to win the 131st Run for the Roses.
For the 139th Kentucky Derby, Smith has secured himself a mount that will go off at much lesser odds than 50-1. The veteran jockey will be aboard Palace Malice, second in the recently run Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.
“We’ve got a seasoned, big-money rider with Mike, and one with whom Dogwood has a fine history,” said Dogwood Stable President Cot Campbell. “Palace Malice is not a complicated colt, but still we’re pleased that Mike can work him in his final move on April 28 at Churchill Downs.”

Dear Keta
Thank You so much for the picture of Animal Kingdom. Such a beauty.

Dear Judy
You know I first thought how VyJack reminded me of Barbaro, he does, but when I dug deeper into the pedigree and I looked at a picture of Northern Dancer, Oh Wow What a likeness to the picture I saw.
I was also looking at Round Table, what a beautiful horse he was. I believe he was born in l954. I just love learning about the pedigree.
And Affirmed, Oh my, one of my All time favorites. I wish so hard some of his family could do really good.

Dear Peggy:
It’s amazing how interesting it is to check into the pedigrees and bloodlines. It’s fun and you can see the the similarities handed down from generation to generation.
There are so many beautiful and talented colts going this year in the Derby that I am really torn. Love Rev, Verrazano, Oxbow, Vyjak, Normandy Invasion, My Lute, Frac Daddy (if he goes). Just can’t make up my mind. Love and Hugs, JB

Have been trying to check on him daily.

After I saw the pictures of the tragedy in Boston yesterday, I came here to look at the pictures of Zenyatta and her new baby. I wanted to see something totally good. As a poster on a horse racing site said so well, animals/horses are incapable of premeditated evil. They are a reminder to me of the beautiful world GOD gave us. The people killed and hurt in this tragedy are in my prayers.
Trina Nagele in So Cal --PUR
Beautifully said, Paula. Prayers for all the victims and their loved ones. My heart goes out to all those who were injured, to the valiant citizens who rushed to their aid, and to the stunned witnesses to the tragedy. Many years ago I ran that marathon myself–the year of the infamous Rosie Ruiz, who marred the race in her own way, but not in any measure comparable to the tragedy this year. I probably crossed the finish line in a time that would have put me right there when the bombs exploded if I had been doing it this year.
zfansandy
I so appreciate the new photos.
The more I look at Z13, the more I see Triple Crown. !!!Really!!! There’s just ‘something’ about him. Okay, u heard it here first.
And, oh, that Z12. What nice long running legs he has grown. Wow.
Such beautiful babies.
Our queen is so lovely and looks so content. Good job LE, Mosses, TeamZ.

Abigail _1849:
Thank you for the update and pic of Rachel, if it wasn’t for her I would have never stumbled across Zenyatta she was her stablemate! There was a race that Rachel wasn’t in and my brother told me that a horse named Zenyatta was her stablemate so I bet on her, and well the rest is history! (If I am a not mistaken Rachel was running in a different race, I think against the boys? And Zenyatta’s race was girls only?)
Thank You for sharing this info with those of us who love Rachel and feel a special bond with her like me! It was a real treat on a very sad and disturbing time on the East Coast.
Many thanks

Black Caviar retirement: A personal comment.
I listened with excitement to her first win, and listened with anxiety to her last. She, as Peter Moody said, gave her all. I still recall the day the magical Zenyatta lost by a hair, and dreaded the time a similar situation would happen for Nelly (or worse). But she’ll live on in my heart (like Zenyatta) and at bad times I can always turn on my own personal memory machine in my mind and see her powering away again. Thank you Nelly. Love KathyR.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R.:
Congrats to Black Caviar on a stunning racing career. Wishing her all the best in her new role as Mom and can’t wait to see her beautiful babies. With all these great horses’ progeny being born soon, what an exciting time for racing in the next few years.
I’m glad Nelly is finishing undefeated and before risking injury. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
Kathy R. Happy and sad at the same time about this news. Nelly was a most exciting horse to watch, and we somehow felt like she would just keep on racing. She nevertheless deserves her retirement. Glad that she left healthy. I will however miss all of her off track adventures such as her products line, her modeling career along with its occasional collateral foot damage and her many charming romances.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Hope her connections do something similar like Z’s Blog for her so that we fans will be able to keep updated on how she is doing. Hugs, JB
Kathy R.
Dear Judy:
Fans will hear about the first mating, and the first foal, and then all will be silence. Until the first foal sale (and I think the connections will stay connected!) It’s just the way things are done down here. It’s the same with attendances at races – it was all about Black Caviar – in fact that’s why her last race was the last race of the day – when she previously raced in Sydney and it was mid programme, the crowds left after they saw her. Zenyatta is just unique in the world. Hugs KathyR.

Sandy (Northeast Ohio) PUR, PUJ
A very touching post Kathy. I’m sure that we all agree that her career was fabulous and join all of you in being relieved that she was never hurt (or beaten!). It sounds as though you have seen her “live” and will have those memories along with all of the videos. As you probably know, some of us joined the Zenny bandwagon after her career was over so never had the chance to see her run. The videos of her races are breath taking – even when you KNOW that she’s going to win, you just can’t believe it sometimes. I’m so glad to have the DVD, but I will always regret never having seen her “in person” (er . . horse).

Happy retirement Nelly

Dear Debbie:
Shall we start saving our pennies to buy the first foal? Cheers KathyR.

Dear Kathy
Sounds good to me working hard. Still
dont think I could afford one of her baby’s
just hope we get all the photos of her
foals I’m glad I have seen her in the
Flesh for her 24th win.
Cheers Debbie

Dear Debbie:
Really envy you seeing her in the flesh: but fantastic memories to have. Wonder who the lucky first Dad is going to be? Would love to be listening in to some of the conversations between various studs and the connections! Cheers, KathyR.

Good luck in retirement, Nelly! We hate to see you go, but you deserve it.
I came here tonight to get a refreshing breath of relative calm, in contrast to some of the chaos on Facebook I have seen, all over the tragedy in Boston.
There are crazed people writing all sorts of “garbazh” (as Jonathan Winters famously pronounced it) and trying fervently to get the rest of the world to believe it! It’s mind-boggling what fear and overactive imagination makes people believe and espouse — rather than sanely planting both feet on the ground, and simply waiting for things to settle.
Kathy R.
Dear Vicki:
That sort of “garbazh” (great word!) is the reason I don’t do either Facebook or twitter – think they both lend themselves as a medium to people who just throw comments to the universe knowing they can’t be identified (by and large) and can therefore be totally irresponsible and hurtful at times of great international stress. At least we can get peace with the magical Zenyatta. Hugs KathyR.

I was trying to think how to respond, and by the time I came back, you beat me to the punch Keta. I’m sure that Kathy didn’t mean YOU I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again. ANYTHING in the wrong hands can be dangerous. In capable hands, such as yours, the social media has provided us with endless information and photos that we would have missed otherwise, and we are grateful for your careful, responsible use of it and the time you take to share with all of us. If only everyone would act accordingly.
Hugs,

Keta. I hear you! Don’t let that negative voice from the past get to you. You’re doing a great job. Twitter is it at the moment, a great source of information. Where would we be without it for Paynter? Or Kauto? Keep at it, Keta.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
No, as the others said — not you, Keta! I do understand Kathy R.’s comment about Facebook and Twitter, and she’s right about those she’s actually referring to — like the ones I referred to, that prompted her response. I enjoy all the FB sites you mentioned, but they and we all know there are also incredible jerks on FB & Twitter, who we have no control over, who are spreading “garbazh”.
Debbie
Dear Kathy
Would luv to be a fly on the wall to
hear who she will go to.

Dear Debbie:
Heard Neil Werrett talking on Skysportsradio a day or so back with Sean Cosgrove: Neil said they were looking for a sprinter, so ruled out Animal Kingdom. But agree will be very interesting. But I don’t think anyone is going to rush the issue. Cheers, KathyR.
