Happy Sunday!
We can’t believe 13Z was born almost two weeks ago. We hear from the great people at Lane’s End that he and his mom are happy and healthy.
Alys sent us a few close-ups of the little one out in the paddock this week, and we wanted to share those along with some more photos from our last trip. We’ll be heading back to the farm in a week to visit Zenyatta and both of her colts (and to take lots of photos!).
And don’t forget 12Z! Here’s a video we shot on a gray morning during our last trip. Watch him take off across the paddock to join the rest of his herd.
Enjoy!

Speaking of Barnaby John–wish you all could have seen him last Saturday—we have been having a lot of very changeable weather. As we say here about Idaho spring,if you don’t like the weather now, wait five minutes! There were a few little flurries of snowflakes when we started for the barn at 6:45 AM—the wind had come up and by the time we got down there at about 7:30,it was blowing a gale. When we got the horses into the barn to play, the barn was creaking and it sounded like the roof might go off. They could hear the howling wind and the closed barn doors were rattling all t hrough the time we were grooming them and riding in the arena. They were pretty hyper and Barnaby was still unhappy with his bit, which I mostly attrributed to the fact that his teeth needed to be floated (which turned out to be the case, but more about that later)–so I didn’t ride him long. I did ride Traveller for a bit, which I had never done, and that was fun. I had never ridden in a Wintec saddle of the design she has and it was very comfortable. When I got off of her, though,I did something funny with my foot getting out of the right stirrup to dismount and the stirrup and it’s leather, came off and hit her in the side. That made her jump and then I didn’t get my left foot out in time, which made her saddle shift, which further scared her–for a minute,it looked like we were going to have a rodeo on our hands, but,I hung on to her reins and talked her down. She always responded well to my voice and calms down for me. I am just not really fast at mounting and dismounting, but Barnaby is so patient with me I do fine with him. Rancher Tom also rode Traveller and really put her through her paces. Sue had always wanted to have him do that so that she could see her perform under Tom’s expertise. It was lovely to watch and Traveller seemed to like it too. Last week,Traveller had been watching Tom work with another horse and was paying attention very intently. Sue decided it was because she wanted Tom to ride HER too–so she asked if he would ride her this past Saturday. It was a lot of fun to see. I told Tom to feel free to ride Barnaby anytime before he goes,if he would like too–I have always thought he would just love him if he ever got on him. He has told be that he thinks Barnaby is a really nice horse and he is so pleased that he has worked out well for me. I know that he must sometimes roll his eyes heavenward at how much I spoil Barnaby,as he is a cowboy, after all,and tends to be a bit more strict in his expectations of how a horse should be trained and riden. Sue and I kid about being the comic relief for the barn!
ANYWAY–back to the thing I really wish you could have seen—after we finished all that, most of the storm had blown over and the sun was out,so we decided to take them out to the big outdoor arena and let them run free in there.Since there was still quite a bit of a breeze blowing, they were really alert as we went out. When we turned them loose in there, they really took off! It was just so beautiful watching them running and playing as they pleased. After awhile,Barnaby was way down at the far end of the arenaand suddenly just TOOK OFF headed back up the far, long, side! You could see a special look come over his face, and then his him just DIG IN with his back end! It was just FABULOUS!!! It really was just thrilling! It was as though he was drunk with his own power –the faster he ran,THE FASTER HE RAN!! The ground shook and his hooves thundered against the ground. When he got to the end of the arena,he made a banked turn and went to the gate and slowed down. He stood there for a minute, then caught sight of me,standing in the middle of the arena, watching everything. He then walked right up to me,as if to say “wasn’t I wonderful”? Did you SEE me Mom,wasn’t I fast??” When he is free in an enclosure or a pasture and can go anywhere he wants to,and then chooses to come to me on his own,it just knocks me out!! He will just come up to me and put his face right up to mine to be loved—WOW!! What could be greater??? I wish I could have taken a video of it–but,I DO replay it in my mind–it was SO beautiful!!
Hope all have a blessed peaceful evening, and may those who are suffering in Boston be brought to a place of peace.

Dear Sue–we have experienced this week EVERYTHING you have said, except for the riding/saddle part. The clanging and clanking in the barn, then capped off by the Boack Beauty run. I have never seen anything so beautiful. Hugs to you both.

Sue,
You always paint the picture so clearly that I think we DO “see it” in our minds. Thanks for the great post dear friend. See you over on the new one :-)

Does anybody who works with Zenyatta remember Green Cat? He was one of her exercise partners for a while and I may be adopting him from CANTER. Couldn’t Believe he was one of Z’s Friends!

Dear all– if you would , we would appreciate your prayers here in central Texas. We have just had big explosions from a fertilizer plant in a communtiy about 20 miles north of us. Many are injured, and there may be more explosions to come. The local football field is being set up as a triage center. Love to all.

What a cutie 13Z is!! Love that chestnut color and the big white blaze. So very distinctive. I think a perfect name for him (combining Mom, Dad, and Mom’s love of pre-race dance moves) would be Tapdanzen. :)

This little guy is going to go grey on us…Love the suggested name Fool me Twice…Not only does it bring Mom and Baby’s birthdates in, but Being 12Z’s name is Cozmic ONE, The twice part fits nicely as he is the second foal. Great name for a stallion too.

Hi!
