Happy Monday!
We thought it would be nice to start the week with photos from last week’s visit to Lane’s End. Ann and Jerry went to see Zenyatta and her colt with bags of carrots in tow. Both Z and her son are doing well, enjoying the crisp Kentucky fall air. Zenyatta is healthy and happy, and 12Z is growing fast!
Enjoy!

WHOOPIE, can’t wait to see our Ebby run again on Saturday. Even if she places it’s going to be fun having her to watch. Safe trip beautiful black swan!
Judy B, I’m so happy you’re back posting and all settled in your new place……I hope you love it and are close enough to go see Your horse real often. They do have a way of brightening a bad day.
Sign, thanks for posting that article on our dear Pulpit, he really was a great stallion, and your so lucky to have one of his babies named after you. I’m still hoping the Mosses name EARnie…. are you ready for this… A Boy Named Sue!!! Fat chance but I can dream can’t I.
TC, so glad you’re back and posting we all need a few redneck jokes once in a while to get us giggling.
Kisses for Zen and Earnie and one blown to heaven for Pulpit.

Dear Sue,
Love the nickname “Black Swan”, “E” is such a delicate, long legged close to being black filly. Just very gorgeous.
Your welcome. Glad I was able to find that wonderful tribute to such a talented horse.
Love it “A Boy Named Sue” for “EARnie”, that nickname is tooo cute too.
Hope It is not too cold up in Wisconsin and the snow is not collecting in huge

Gulfstream notes: Animal Kingdom starts cranking up
By Mike Welsch Daily Racing Form 12/12/2012 4:10PM
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Animal Kingdom took his first step toward his much-anticipated 2013 debut when he breezed an easy half-mile in 52 seconds around the dogs at Palm Meadows on Tuesday. Animal Kingdom returned from a long layoff to finish second behind Wise Dan in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. The 2011 Kentucky Derby winner, Animal Kingdom is being pointed to the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap on Feb. 9.
“He went easily,” trainer Graham Motion said. “The idea was to give him a nice, comfortable first breeze back. He’s had some down time since the Breeders’ Cup.”

Hollywood Park: Zenyatta’s sister Eblouissante faces winners Saturday
By Steve Andersen
Eblouissante, a half-sister to the great Zenyatta, is entered in a first-level optional $40,000 claimer in Saturday’s fourth race at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Eblouissante, a 3-year-old half-sister to 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, is entered for her first start against winners in Saturday’s fourth race at Betfair Hollywood Park, a first-level optional $40,000 claimer over 1 1/16 miles.
Trained by John Shirreffs for breeder Eric Kronfeld, Eblouissante will be heavily favored in a field of five that includes Glowing Spirit, Includethecat, The Only Key and Toomanytomatoes.
Eblouissante, who is by Bernardini, won her debut in a maiden race over 1 1/16 miles by 4 1/4 lengths on Nov. 16. Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Eblouissante closed from seventh in a field of eight, pulling away in the final sixteenth.
Nakatani has the mount again on Eblouissante on Saturday.

Triple the peeps down there, MORE people are coming to see her this time. If we aren’t invited, that is OK too. That’s not the reason I am going – I love her sweet self, want her to do well and come back safe. Believe me I am a slow one too.
Just getting the track times, that is very confusing to me.
Don’t know what a fast time or a slow time is for any track ???
Terry Crow
I don’t know the conditions of the race on Saturday, but it is probably an allowance for horses who are non-winners of two races. You can learn much about a race by reading the conditions described in the program or Racing Form. Quite often, a particular race is written by the Racing Secretary for a particular horse. There is usually one horse in the race for which the conditions fit perfectly. It is important to remember from a betting perspective, though, that some claiming horses are better than those in allowance races and when the two types of horses are mixed into one race the result can be surprising.

What is your pick?
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear TC,
Thanks for the tips and explanations, for those of us Hunter/Jumper addicts this racing can be mind boggling. I think of the “track conditions” in relationship to whether the horse can jump not run. HA HA HA.
Great information Judy B. Wonder who this race was written for.
It sounds very complicated ????
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear TC,
I see what you mean, there are some winning claimers in this race.
Should be interesting, I am sure JS knows why he placed her here,
would love to pick his brain.
Older claimers against younger unknowns a real mixed bag. It seems
that Zenny was at the top her her game from day one and went right on
after two allowance races to Stakes racing. It is going to be fun to see
“E” develop in a different way.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sue:
Did you mean who would I pick in the race? If so, I would bet Eblouissante to win and Exacta Box her with Toomanytomatoes; 3 and 5. Hugs, JB
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sign and Z Fans:
Yes, it can be complicated. The No. 1 horse in E’s race is four years old and has 18 starts and 2 wins, one of which is an Allowance Optional Claiming; the No. 2 horse is from Great Britain (this is his third start in the US) and he’s a six year old; the No. 4 horse is five years old and has 21 starts and 2 wins, also one of which is an Allowance Optional Claiming; the No. 5 horse is a three year old like Elbouissant, has six starts and 3 wins, one of which is an Allowance Optional Claiming.
Will be exciting to see how Ebby does against this group. Hugs, JB

Today we have another birthday girl, Victoria! I’ll post her last year’s poem (slightly revised) and then follow it with a new poem.
A Birthday Poem for Victoria, Granddaughter of Brenda S.
December 13, 2011
Today we wish a happy birthday
To young Victoria of Fort Erie!
(That’s across the Niagara River—
In winter I sure bet they shiver!)
Ask her what she wants to be,
And she’ll forthrightly say
That question’s a “no brainer”—
Her wish is to be a horse trainer,
And nothing’s gonna detain her!
She’s fourth generation,
Of course,
In veneration
Of the horse.
It started with her great-granddad,
Who would be so glad
These days to see
Vic sporting her Z Dumpling tag
And looking so fine
While attending classic races
At venerable Woodbine.
He’d delight too in how she
Confidently sits astride
Horses with spirits so noble and free
As she learns to ride
And goes with them through their paces.
His heart would soar
To see how eager Vic is to explore
Great Thoroughbred lore,
Such as the story
Of the dazzling glory
Of Noor.
Last July with her Grandma B
(The daughter of that great-grandpa)
Vic was so lucky
As to visit illustrious farms in Kentucky
And there also see
Where Noor’s final resting place
Would be.
It might surprise you, dear Reader,
To learn that Vic’s grandmother,
None other
Than our dear Brenda S,
Did back in August confess
That it was Vic who did lead her
To this aerie that is Z’s Diary.
Vic was the first of the two
To discover
Z’s site,
And Vic thought her grandma just might
Greatly enjoy it too.
Brenda, though a horse lover,
Did profess
She would regret
Time spent
On the Internet,
And so she resisted—
But our dear Vic insisted!
And when Brenda did finally relent,
She found such delight
In the good vibes on Z’s site
That soon she herself started comments to write.
Today as there in Fort Erie
Brenda a birthday card for Vic does sign,
She may well get teary
And the lines may look all bleary
For this time
Vic is turning eighteen
And officially will as an adult be seen.
Come fall, Brenda
Will send her
Off to college
To gain yet more knowledge
As she there pursues courses
About performance horses.
Dearest Vic, we raise our glasses
To toast you at your birthday dinner.
We wish you good luck with your classes
And hope you’ll one day attain
Your lofty goal, which is to train
A Kentucky Derby winner!
A Birthday Poem for Victoria, Granddaughter of Brenda S.
December 13, 2012
This fall our dear Vic
Headed west to the Huron shore
Where all for her did click
To pursue,
Through the U
Of Guelph,
A certificate course
In handling the performance horse.
She found
All she wanted and more,
As horses there abound.
Though weariness did her some nights tempt
To leave a book on its shelf,
She would by daybreak
At the barn be
Her favorite horses to see
(One Solomon most of all)
And a morning ride to take.
For her ’twas always a pleasure
To keep the horses kempt,
And she never found it a chore
To clean a stall,
Or to give each horse its full measure
Of oats and hay
Twice a day.
Solomon, mentioned afore,
Is quite a big boy,
Half Thoroughbred, half Friesan,
And to Vic’s eyes
so pleasin’.
He’s black in color, and wise
As his very name implies.
Also not to be forgotten
Among those Vic’d like to spoil rotten
Is Deputy Lor,
In whose pedigree
You’ll Canada’s pride and joy,
That influential sire Northern Dancer, see
Both top and bottom.
Now Vic is completing a practicum
Close to Fort Erie, where she does hail from.
When that work/study is done,
She’ll have her first semester
Successfully behind her.
We hope this birthday will find her
Full of hope and good cheer
For the coming year.
If her fourth-generation ancestor,
That bequester
Of the horse-loving gene,
Were today on the scene
To address her,
He would her congratulate
On how she handled each test
As if it didn’t stress her
And did rate
As one of the best,
Advancing to the next semester.
That ancestor of yore
The same first name bore
As the trainer Vic most highly does esteem
And under whom it is her dream
To do her next work assignment—
Our beloved John!
Vic is in total alignment
With John Shirreffs’s philosophy,
And equines can that immediately see.
With Vic horses sense an instant rapport—
For that reason and many more,
I wager there’s much success
For our dear Vic in store!
Happy birthday, Victoria, and many, many happy returns!

PAULICK REPORT: MINE THAT BIRD MOVIE UPDATE
’50-1′: MINE THAT BIRD MOVIE RACING TOWARD 2013 RELEASE DATE
by Paulick Report Staff | 12.06.2012 | 11:25am
Ask Ray
Jim Wilson has worked tirelessly for the past three years and spent around $8 million so far, but he is still determined to turn 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird’s story into a movie.
At a news conference at Sunland Park Dec. 5, Wilson said that the movie, “50-1”, has entered the editing and scoring stage, and he is hopeful of a 2013 release date.
Wilson said that a crew will shoot race footage this weekend at Sunland, where Mine That Bird used the Borderland Derby as a stepping stone to that year’s Kentucky Derby.
Wilson, the Academy Award-winning producer of “Dances With Wolves,” said the movie is up against long odds of its own, since the movie studios he approached about it weren’t interested.
“Nobody wanted “50 to 1″, ” he said, noting the recent failure of HBO’s track-based “Luck” and the lackluster box-office results of Disney’s 2010 movie “Secretariat”.
“Hollywood is a really tough town,” he added. “They do not want another horse story.”
Barbara Wood (Texas)
sign–thank you so much for this report. I love MTB. It is revolting that Hollywood can’t get enough of murders, car chases, and the same type of movies over and over. Anything resembling wholesome gets panned automatically.
Terry Crow
Agree. They may not want another horse story, but will gladly fund more drug trafficking films.
Pati-Waiting for the holidays!
I personally am tired of always seeing drugs, car chases, sexual scenes, blood and gore, and swearing that shames sailors. I don’t go see a movie if it contains any of the following. I don’t like seeing that, and I hate being scared. Why not horses? Because they are pure, and everything man-kind has long strived to become, but cannot? Does it shame them that a movie about a horse would be more popular than “Saw” or “A Haunting on Elm Street”? What is Hollywood going to say when they start production on “Zenyatta” and it beats out some cheesy, mass produced horror piece of trash, or some copy-pasted action film that is retouched from a similar one from a few years back that didn’t do so well, and all they did was add some big names, and they come out simultaneously? What would happen if it does beat out the crap they usually produce? Will they tuck their tails between their legs, and deny that it did well? Or maybe they’ll hire critics to give it bad ratings to try and scare people off from seeing the movie. Typical, hypocritical Hollywood. (Not the people living in the area, just the actual being in itself.) I’ll stick to my Pixar animated movies, and horse movies, thank you.
Especially Horses / So Cal

Pati-Holiday Humming!
Z family,
Poor Red is heartbroken. We had to sell his girlfriend Katie in order to be able to fit another horse in the barn. Katie was an old, classy lady that did lessons with the little riders-to-be, and she went to a trusted home. Red doesn’t know that (poor guy) and he’s been hollering for her ever since. I guess being a Grand Champion doesn’t fix a broken heart. Poor Red. I hope he bonds to the new horse, and they become friends. It might help take his mind off of his Katie.
At least the new horse is a jumper. Exciting to see I can continue my training after I had to quit the jumping stable. I miss Gus. He was fun.
I’ll be watching E this Saturday. I finally have a free weekend! Yay!
So many cards to write and presents to make! I’m swamped in a sea of lace, wrapping paper, and cookies. The latter being rather nice. :-)

Dear Keta:
Thank you for sharing this “too cute” photo of BT. Hugs, JB
Randy
That picture is just adorable — makes me think of “All Creatures Great and Small.” The horse looks so sweet and gentle and the kitty is totally unafraid. Talk about accepting each other’s differences… all of life should be so.

Very cute photo, one of Frankel with his new yard cat
and now one with Bullet Train and his new American barn, yard cat.
Hope Bullet Train has fun deciphering those human KY southern accents, from
the proper British accents.

Thanks for responding to my questions/thoughts regarding Zeny’s future colts. It’s so great to be able to express one’s thoughts and to get responses from “horsey” people; I could have said all of that to my husband, a co-worker, a sister, etc and only gotten a blank look and a “what?” Just another reason I love coming to this site….the people here “get it”. I love Kitten’s Joy and the story behind his owner’s determination to prove him a stallion. Regarding export of our good stallions to Japan, I am becoming more comfortable with the idea that they will be well taken care of (IHA seems to be thieving and so much patience has been shown to War Emblem), but I think it is going to hurt the American breeding program in the long run.
Well, I’m now on pins and needles for Ebby. I’ll need to work my Christmas shopping around her race, although first thing Saturday morning I have to take my sick kitty back to the Vet for a checkup.
Merry Christmas :)
Trina Nagele in SoCal
Best wishes to your kitty for her recovery.

Get well,Kitty.

I hope your kitty is better real soon.

Dear Especially Horses,
So much fun to have a horsey person to discuss these issues with.
Hope your kitty is better and I will be glued to the HRTV all day as
I missed “E” first race at the time it was happening.
Couch potatoe it will be for me, Saturday !!!!

Here are today’s redneck jokes. You might be a redneck if you use the word “man” at least four times in each sentence you speak. You might be a redneck if you use Preparation H for wrinkles. You might be a redneck if you think that people who have electricity are uppity. You might be a redneck if you use a bed sheet as a sofa cover. You might be a redneck if the man at the liquor store knows you by your first name. You might be a redneck if you call the information operator for the number for 911.
Pati-Holiday Humming!
We used fizzy water to clean an older horse’s wrinkles once. She stuck her head int he water to feel the bubbles tickling her nose. Lol

Dear TC GP:
You’re Back. Love the jokes. If you haven’t seen the show “Duck Dynasty” on A & E, be sure to tune it. It’s everything you ever described in your Redneck jokes. So funny and very likable people. Hugs, JB

I caught one last night. Some guy who had a beard like Stonewall Jackson was cutting down a Christmas tree. Most unusual show. Just because one is a redneck, that doesn’t make him or her a bad person.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
They all sport beards. They have a genuine way about them and are just naturally funny. One of my favorite shows.
Didn’t mean any disrespect or to imply that Rednecks are bad people. That was never in my thoughts. Our Redneck Club is made up of some of the best people I’ve ever had the good fortune to know. Love and Hugs, JB

I think it was, Willie, from the Duck Dynasty that said, every Red Neck has the same middle name…FUN!!!! Red Fun Neck.
Good jokes today,TC,Sir Fun Dude.
Man,if I make it thru December,man,everything’s gonna be alright,man.
Someone did sing that song?
I luv em too,Judy B. Hugs!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
My favorite is the last one!
Terry Crow
Ann-That was Merle Haggard who sang the song about making it through December.
Ann NC
Thank you,TC.
Gettin the CD out now!

Great jokes, Terry!

To all that commented on liking today’s jokes-Thank you.

Love your Liquor store joke,
I just spent about an hour talking with the Manager of Richard’s liquor store
in Tanglewood, a very uppity part of Houston. Very interesting conversation,
she did point out a wonderful very high calorie gift; Very spiked Egg Nog in
a very beautiful bottle. Tooo much heavy whipping cream for me, though !!!

I chuckle every time I look at the last picture of !2Z getting treats from Mrs. Moss. My eye travels to the other side of the fence and all the curious youngsters already at the fence and more on their way from farther out. Gotta love em all!
John Shirreffs has three horses racing on Saturday: Eblouissante in race 4, Poster Girl in race 5 (Atten Sandy N.E. Ohio)…Tiz Gianni in race 8. The eighth race is the Hollywood Turf Cup, a grade II stakes race.
Ann NC
Wonder if our, Crescent Moon Guy was with those curious youngsters?
That photo makes me smile, too,Marty R. What a group!
Go, Ebby,Go!
Praying she will have a safe trip, if she starts.
Those legs of hers…she could join the Rockets.

Dear Marty, Ann and Z Fans:
Love your posts and the “Rockets” comparison. Hugs, JB
Ann NC
That was Rockettes…as in dancers.
Go Ebby!

Dear Ann:
Knew what you meant. Too cute. Hugs, JB
Nancy Marashio
Thanks so much for the delightful pictures of Zenyatta and her son (who will be named when?).
Had to chuckle at Blood Horse John Shirreffs comment in article about Eblouissante: “But having had Zenyatta tells me I can’t have a strong effect on Eblouissante’s demeanor; I have to get along with the way she wants to do things.”
May Eblouissante’s ways become as wise as the Queen’s.

Dear Nancy M.
Too cute. JS is quite a guy. Hugs, JB

Ebby couldn’t be in better hands. I would think John would be very cautious before he would start her on an off track, though. Even though the BHP surface is synthetic, it becomes very hard to get traction when it rains, which it has. Check out the race times on Thursday and Friday.
♥ Auntie Judy aka JAG / So. Calif. ♥
I received this info from a very close friend who knows EBLOUISSANTE personally:
“Yeah – I have a feeling that it’s only gonna be light sprinkles – the boss isn’t even entertaining the fact that we would have too much rain – so I’m gonna cross my fingers and hope he’s right! I hope she runs cos she’s about ready to burst right now! Talk about feeling good :-))))) ”
God LOVE her! I will be there to cheer her on… regardless of where she places, she is a professional and she “gets it!” woo hoo Big E!! XOXO
Auntie Judy looking forward to Saturday since it’s been a horrible few days… whew!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Thank you, Judy. I wish you’d send that rain over here!
Pati-Waiting for the holidays!
It’s awesome she is feeling good! Can’t wait to see her win by SEVEN this time. LOL
Go Team Z, E, V, and Baby Z!!
Terry Crow
Hope that is true. Looking forward to seeing you in the winner’s circle again.
