Happy Monday!
We thought it would be nice to start the week with photos from last week’s visit to Lane’s End. Ann and Jerry went to see Zenyatta and her colt with bags of carrots in tow. Both Z and her son are doing well, enjoying the crisp Kentucky fall air. Zenyatta is healthy and happy, and 12Z is growing fast!
Enjoy!

Remembering Pulpit Through His Progeny
12/11/2012 12:05 PM
Past the Grandstand by Mary Cage
December 6, 2012 marked a day of sadness in the Thoroughbred world. With the sudden, unexpected death of the grand Pulpit, the breeding industry suffered a huge loss. A perennial leading sire, the son of the greatA.P. Indy will be greatly missed in the industry, but his offspring provide us with a chance to savor his legacy.

Janet Newman
I was enjoying looking at these pictures and
seeing Ann and 12Z , it brings back the moments after
his birth and Ann getting down in the hay and nuzzling
him as a newborn foal.
They say animals imprint from early experiences. I think
our beautiful boy knows Ann is his human Mama,
Such a lovely thing to see .
Especially Horses / So Cal
Janet, you have echoed my thoughts! I was reflecting on that same thing…Ann and the newborn colt with Z so calmly looking on.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Janet,
Though the same thing about Ann’s imprinting to her within hours of his birth.
May have been very purposeful so he will always be gentle with her even when
he becomes a big strong colt.
Wendy
When will Zenyatta’s colt get his name? Will he be sold ?
If I could , my answers would be “soon” and “no”.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
No, according to every report, the colt won’t be sold. The Mosses like to race their homebreds, and anyway this boy is their first “grandchild.”
He is unlikely to be named soon, if they keep to their usual practice. According to David Ingordo, who would know, the Mosses prefer to name their horses just before they leave their initial training in Florida to go to their trainers’ barns. For 12Z, this would occur in early-mid 2014, when he is 2. They have said that they are thinking hard about a perfect name for him, though.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Wendy,
Ann Moss emphatically stated in print that Zenny’s offspring will not be sold
in an article late 2010 before she even became pregnant. Most likely they
will keep all of her offspring and sell her Grandchildren. As Zenny is going to
create a “family” for them to enhance their breeding operation.
When Zenny was at the Mayberry’s pretraining (2 years old), David Ingordo was called to
come down and look at the filly. He thought she had strangles or was sick.
When he got there The Mayberry’s said to him “You have one special filly,
she passes everyone in training”. She really needs to have a speical name.
Zenyatta was named at the end to her 2 year old training when she before she went to John Sherriffs barn.
In the racing world, it is important to get a feel for the talent of the horse and their
personality as they begin their training to name them. SO THEY ARE FREQUENTLY NAMED AFTER THEIR TWO YEAR OLD TRAINING. THEY HAVE ACTUALLY THINKING OF A NAME SINCE THE SECOND HE WAS FOALED.
So Zenny may have two unnamed foals after her Tapit foal is born. Remember they are not human and human traditions of naming are not part of the TB racing world, usually.
Trina Nagele in SoCal
Most of Zenny’s two-year-old training took place at John’s barn. She arrived there in May of 2006.

Calidoscopio wins the Breeders’ Cup Marathon at 17-1. He will skip the Hollywood Turf Cup and target the Santa Anita Handicap.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Calidoscopio, the 9-year-old from Argentina who won the Breeders’ Cup Marathon at Santa Anita on Nov. 2 in a 17-1 upset, will miss Saturday’s $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup because of an elevated temperature.
The illness was detected last week and had subsided enough last weekend for the horse to resume light training, trainer Mike Puype said.
The new long-term goal for Calidoscopio is the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap at Santa Anita on March 2, with one prep race.
“That leaves me with a little bit of time,” Puype said. “We’re not in a big hurry.”
Calidoscopio won the BC Marathon in his 40th start. The winner of 10 races, including seven group stakes in South America, Calidoscopio has earned $853,154.
Eveline / Maryland.
The “I guess he should have been wearing his bonnet” was the first thing I thought when I read this, LOL!
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Eveline,
It was probably and good luck “bonnet”. Aaron Grinder (during an HRTV interview) was saying he wished they would have kept some of his traditions as he is after all 9 years old. Aaron also offered to gallop him bareback without a saddle.
Maybe there is some legal issues surrounding that on the track and for a trainer.
Just hope this “guy” can make/want to learn a new way of training. His Breeders
Cup win was awesome and I hope he can defend and win the title again in
2013.

Dear Keta: Thanks for this piece of information. Still nothing down here regarding where Americain will stand. Bit surprised that it’s taking so long. Dear Keta: Thanks for that. My comment is really regarding where (if) Americain will stand in Australia – the connections have indicated in various interviews that the name of the Australian stud would be announced by now – I’m just curious as to why it’s taking so long to find that Australian stud. Maybe it’s because the industry here is looking to buy and import “ready made” distance runners, and not start from scratch? Don’t know, but as I said, there is no discussion on the lack of information. Skysportsradio reported this morning that Americain has left the country for his new home, and the information you posted on Kindergarten Kid, but again nothing about him standing in Australia.

Yes, it’s a special feeling. I wish every one could experience the loving and bonding nature of horses.
It’s funny, I know that Charlie sees me and he knows there’s treats. But when I saw him last weekend, he was in the paddock with two of his Buds so I gave all of them carrots and mints. After the treats were gone, I was petting Charlie and talking to him. All three were listening intently. As I turned to go and said goodby waving to them, they all just stood there for quite a while watching me walk away. Then they turned and went back to grazing. I actually felt like they didn’t want me to go. They are truly amazing. Having this opportunity to know Charlie has been so wonderful. I’m learning so much about horses through him. Love and Hugs, JB

@Sign.
No doubt the Mosses will race all of Zenyatta’s offspring (colts and fillies) under their Colors and keep all her fillies for their breeding program, but do you think the Mosses will really keep all of Zenyatta’s colts? No matter what kind of racer he becomes, I don’t see them EVER selling 12Z. 12Z has already become his own sort of celebrity being the “first” foal. But if Zeny should have several colts, what would they do with them all after their racing career is over, especially the non stakes winning stallion? I doubt any will be gelded. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a country like Japan wanting to buy the best Zenyatta stallion they could get their hands on for stallion duty. Come to think of it, I’d like to see a Zenyatta stallion standing in California someday. What I can imagine is the Mosses standing (with or without syndicating) any Champion or near Champion out Zenyatta and selling the other stallions with a buyback clause or some other type of provision written in to protect the horse. But then again, the Mosses are extraordinary people so maybe they will be the sole owners of a herd of Zenyatta’s. Haha. BTW, I hope all Z’s babies make it to the races and are stakes winners and of course hoping for a Horse of the Year to emerge.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Especially Horses,
Love the great generation of possibilites for Zenny’s children. You are right so many owners say standing a stallion is very difficult. Even the Ramsey’s seem to only have one stallion they generate all of their “Kittens” from, Kittens Joy. I was imagining them having a huge farm and property full of all of Zenny’s “children”, but the reality might be they have to sell some of them if they are all not “special”, but to let Japan get one, Oh My. Also, stallion contracts seem to ebb and flow. Tiago and Giacamo were in KY then moved out for a while and are now back. Not sure what the cost is to stand a stallion and retain ownership?? Maybe they would only sell part ownership??? It would be wonderful
if one of Zenny’s colt’s did stand in California. It sure does seem like they will all race there. John Sherriff’s sure has a knack with slow to develop leggy fillies. Going to
be interesting if 12 Z is slow to develop, too. Bernardini was prepared to race at 2,
but had “the two year old this and that” so did not run. However, Tapit really does breed speed and preciousness in his off spring. Not sure if her late maturity will over ride this though. Another thought is that a horse of her size and late development, colt or filly, takes a lot of time and money. Some people will not want to wait that out.
Lets keep up the possibilities and then we can see what actually happens. However,
if anyone has lots of $$$$ it is The Mosses.
The Japanese are going to build a TB empire that no one can beat with
US bloodstock. They are a very interesting people. Very intelligent and very focused
on being successful and at the top of their game. And they do get there, no fooling around. We had an oriental medical fellow and he worked solid over 10O days, no days off and constant on call. His work ethic and focus was amazing. And at the end of the 100 days he never complained and never looked tired, amazing !!!
