Happy Monday!
We thought it would be nice to start the week with photos from last week’s visit to Lane’s End. Ann and Jerry went to see Zenyatta and her colt with bags of carrots in tow. Both Z and her son are doing well, enjoying the crisp Kentucky fall air. Zenyatta is healthy and happy, and 12Z is growing fast!
Enjoy!

You can see the love between Zenyatta and Ann. When Z12 gets into training and spends more time with the Moss’s I am sure the love bond will grow as well. I am glad for owners like Jerry and Ann. So many race horses don’t have those kind of connections.

I can only add my voice to all that has been said about these pictures. Truly heartwarming. Here are a few redneck jokes for today. You might be a redneck if you were expelled from summer school. You might be a redneck if you have ever done all of your Christmas shopping at a truck stop. You might be a redneck if you know Honey Boo Boo personally. You might be a redneck if you are related to the Swamp People. You might be a redneck if you spit in the skillet to check the temperature. You might be a redneck if you have a toilet seat as a hood ornament.

Vicki-Thanks so much for posting this. I did miss it the first time around. Classic RN, no doubt. Reminds me of one of the old RN jokes–You know you live in a redneck area when the local funeral home has a neon sign in its window.

Dear Sheena,
So very sorry for Paul and Paul’s staff that Kauto left so suddenly. They must
were quite taken aback and gave him such a wonderful life. It would have been
nice had they discussed a date. Sounds like they pulled up the Lori and loaded
him in without the bat of an eye. Sure hope they will visit him in his new home and so very much hope that he is as well taken care of.

Dear Sheena,
Just found this link to the transfer of Kauto from Ditcheat to Yogi Breisner’s.
Did not realize this Collett is a 22 year old “aspiring olympic medalist”, no track record of professional experience. Sorry Kauto deserves a quality rider and hopefully will
be too much for this person with minimal experience. Kauto you
show them a thing or two, Shack style, crowhoppin, mad fresh !!!!

signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Ann,
Just hope they don’t make a decision on Kauto’s dressage capabilities
with this person aboard.
He needs to have someone like Carl Hester or Charlotte De Jardin (sp !!) evaluate his dressage capabilities. Although he needs much less limited ability in dressage as an Eventer than a Grand Prix dressage horse. Carl and Charlotte would be able to defiantly tell his ability much more. Perhaps Yogi will ride him, too.

Hi Zenny,
I have been missing you so much and seeing these pictures of you and baby Z made my day. Thanks Ann and Jerry for making this possible. I always love seeing the pictures of you and Zenny and baby Z together like a family and see all the love being shown by Ann and Zenyatta that is so special. Zenyatta looks so beautiful in her state of pregnancy and Z12 looks more magnificent every time I see pictures of him and I understand that he is quite fiesty. Z12 looks like his MOM and I expect he will be much like her. I still think of Zenyatta all the time and always think of how she has this extremely wonderful personalty, she is so unforgetable. Will be waiting for the next new pictures and God Bless You both for taking such good care of our Zenyatta and her son. It means alot to many of us to be ableto follow Zenny’s life. By the way you both look good in the pictures also. Have a joyfull Merry Christmas! Irene Caty from California.

This is “off topic” – well, sort of, but so lovely, I wanted to make sure everyone got a chance to read it in case they didn’t see it in the Forum. Sent by my Phoenix pal, Tressia Contreras, this one hits me right between the eyes. Enjoy.
When I am an old horsewoman
I shall wear turquoise and diamonds,
And a straw hat that doesn’t suit me
And I shall spend my social security on
white wine and carrots,
And sit in my alleyway of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.
I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night
And ride the old bay gelding,
Across the moonstruck meadow
If my old bones will allow
And when people come to call, I will smile and nod
As I walk past the gardens to the barn
and show instead the flowers growing
inside stalls fresh-lined with straw.I will shovel and sweat and wear hay in my hair
as if it were a jewel.
And I will be an embarrassment to all
Who will not yet have found the peace in being free
to have a horse as a best friend
A friend who waits at midnight hour
With muzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be.

Dear Diana,
Such a lovely poem. Just finished watching Ireland Unbridled on HRTV and all
of the “new bees” to Ireland and cross country were practicing on their veteran
steeds. Really made me want to take cross country lessions, that will sure
put hair somewhere. Jumping those small jumps, down into and out of the water,
learning how to balance and help the horse jump !!!!

Diana Stuart,
Thank you so much for this. I love the sentiment of this poem.
Oh, to have a barn with lovelies in it for respite. Nothing like horses and dogs to restore sanity and calm to one’s soul. Truly, heaven must have lots of barns (and doghouses, too)!

It’s a beautiful thing to read all the loving comments…I think we have been missing our Zenny and 12Z a lot and these pics are exactly what we needed. Zenny has the ability to transend a computer screen and jump into your heart. As her Mikey often said, Zen is heaven sent and you can sense it in every photo. dear sign max and pati have just been on @colletteventing and kauto sure has a lovely new home paul was hurt because clive smith had discussed kautos future with experts and not team ditcheat so paul decided it was best he move out now bit silly really for his time with paul to end on a sour note hugs sheena
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Sheena,
The horse world can be quite unique. It is too bad that Yogi and Laura will not
get the benefit of a collaboration, which I think was what Paul was hoping.
Kauto has a lot of quirks and also probable some very special nuances that
make him the champion he is. It is going to be very difficult to learn about
these in a month and really give him a chance to be sucessful. Paul seems
to be a kind and rational man and wanted to be a part of his development.
Example here in the US, when Benjamin Leon purchased Royal Delta for
$8.5 million, he thought about changing her trainer. But wisely did not
as the time it takes for a new trainer to learn about a horse is huge, without
information from the first trainer. So You Think was another horse transferred
to Adian O Brian, who admittedly a year or so later, said he should have listened
to his Aussie trainer all along as to how he likes to be trained. It took him all that
time to make things right with SYT. Kauto deserves the best and Paul was left out
of the mix and rightfully took the “control” of the situation and moved him. I really give Paul credit for doing this so both can move on. Did not realize that he was going to be and EVENTER.
Arlene
Thanks for the beautiful, loving pictures of Zenyatta and Z12 with Jerry and Ann Moss.

Kauto Star Primed for Career in Dressage
By The Associated Press

Posted: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 3:56 PM
After capturing two Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cups, steeplechase star Kauto Star could soon be targeting Olympic gold medals after being sent by his owner for a month’s training in dressage.
The 12-year-old Kauto Star, who was retired from racing in October, will be assessed by Laura Collett, a European bronze medalist in eventing, and Britain coach Yogi Breisner in the coming weeks regarding his suitability in dressage.
“I wanted him to have an interest—he’s just too good to be a hack or to be out in a field,” said owner Clive Smith.
Neptune Collonges, the 2012 Grand National Steeplechase winner, and 1991 Cheltenham Gold Cup champion Garrison Savannah turned to dressage after successful careers in horse racing.

Tears and anger as Kauto Star makes exit
By Lee Mottershead Racing Post 10:55PM 11 DEC 2012
KAUTO STAR’S record-breaking association with Paul Nicholls’ Ditcheat yard came to a premature and emotional end on Tuesday when the champion trainer bowed to “the inevitable” and joined his tearful staff in waving goodbye to the greatest jump racehorse of the modern era.
In stark contrast to Kauto Star’s treasured status at Ditcheat, relations between Nicholls and owner Clive Smith have become increasingly strained and reached breaking point on Saturday when Smith announced he intended to relocate the dual Cheltenham Gold Cup and five-time King George VI Chase hero with a view to him training as a dressage horse with British squad member Laura Collett.
Just hours after Smith revealed at a Monday media lunch that Kauto Star would be departing his long-time Somerset base after Christmas, Nicholls consulted senior staff members and decided the time had come for the recently retired 12-year-old to leave his home of nearly nine years.
While some at Ditcheat were quick to express their anger at Smith’s behaviour, Nicholls – who had hoped his champion could live in retirement at Ditcheat – yesterday sought to present a dignified front when speaking shortly after Kauto Star had been driven from the yard having previously joined the trainer’s staff for a photograph at 12.15pm.
Paul Nicholls: ‘an extremely sad and upsetting day for everyone’

Baby Z is really growing into himself, and Z remains the most perfect creature on the planet.
Thank you to Ann and Jerry for sharing these incredible pictures. We love Z and we love you for sharing her with us and being such great owners, and such wonderful representatives of the racing community.
Run fast and safe, Baby Z, always, whether it be on the track or in a pasture….I can’t wait to hear your chosen name, and see you grow into yourself and your incredible genes.
Thank you again to the Mosses and Lane End for treating Z’s fans with dignity, respect and love. She is one amazing girl.

Take Charge Indy to race at four
Handicappers Edge Brisnet.com
12/11/12 (Last updated: 12/10/12 6:21 PM)
Take Charge Indy, winner of this year’s Grade 1 Florida Derby and recent runner-up in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap, will remain in training for 2013 and winter in South Florida to train for his four-year-old campaign, which is expected to include a start in the February 9 Grade 1 Donn Handicap as an initial goal.
WinStar Farm acquired the breeding rights on the regally-bred son of A.P. Indy, and will stand the colt at the completion of his racing career.
“We’re extremely excited to bring back Take Charge Indy as a four-year-old, and really look forward to big things to come,” trainer Pat Byrne said. “He is just now rounding back into top form, and we believe he can be a leading older horse in 2013. His Clark performance gives us a lot of confidence going forward, and he couldn’t have bounced out of that race any better than he did. We’ll go down to Palm Meadows again for the winter and target him for the Donn.”
Campaigned by owners Chuck and Maribeth Sandford, Take Charge Indy currently has earnings of $821,824. His biggest win to date came in the $1 million Florida Derby over a field that included classic winner Union Rags. Most recently, Take Charge Indy was second, beaten a length, by Shackleford in the November 23 Clark at Churchill.
