April 18 Cherokee Devotional
The voice of doom is loud in our land. It is predicting unheard of fears and possibilities. But we have an antidote in our mouths-our words. Words are powerful, able to turn away the negative thoughts and words of those who have no purpose but to degrade. We don’t have to let other people decide that we are victims of every attack, every disease, every wrongdoing. Our u ni ne twv (words), say the Cherokees, are mighty to pull down anything or any person that lies in wait to harm us. Life and death are truly in the power of the tongue-and our part is to study the use of words and their effect on us. We know what it is to hear words of courage. It is light entering a dark place and we hear as well as speak.
Give ear, I am the mouth of my nation.

Dear Max,
Thank you for the Hovis update. “Two sandwiches short of a picnic.” Ha ha ha. Here in Southern CA we say “two tacos short of a combination plate.” Ole! Happy Easter weekend, everyone. I thought Z14 would be here before my birthday, April 21st. But I just may have guessed the right date!

Hovis is in rare form this week. Never a dull moment for him. Thought those of you not on Facebook would enjoy his Mum’s apology to those involved in the . . . um. . . incidents involving the cars:
“To the people in the yellow convertible yesterday afternoon. I’m very sorry, my horse is a prat. But in fairness your car a) had no roof and b) was yellow so thus in his mind needed to be examined. Closely.
I hope the snot came off your hair…
To the ladies in the land rover, all I can say is you asked him to say hello. He didn’t want those of you in the back to feel left out. Getting his head through the window was never going to be a challenge that put him off…..”
I hope that someday she will win a writing award for all of the smiles she provides. Thanks, as always, to Sheena via Max for our Friday treat!

Dear Sheena,
When you visit the Observatory, think of me! So happy for Glesni and Monty. Stay away, Blue 24!!! Fingers crossed for April 21st. I really thought Zenny’s foal would be here before my birthday but in deference to my special day I had to guess that date. Marty is adorable eating his doughnut. His wild cousins can’t even IMAGINE a life like Marty’s…Have you checked out all the Marty products? His parents must have a background in marketing! Boo’s fame never ceases to amaze me. Love today’s pic. Fubu looked sweet, indeed. My kids have lots of toys, too. Love watching them play. Zoe is such a goodwill ambassador. Bless her! Blessed Good Friday to you as well. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy

Birthday Poem for Judy Berube
(April 18, 2013)
Our dearest Judy Berube,
Honored member of the Z-ster clan
And co-founder of Equi-Army,
Is by all known to be
Kind and big hearted,
A “señora perfecta.”
This year she hit
A horse rescue trifecta,
Or, if you’ll permit,
In the parlance of a baseball fan,
She hit a grand slam.
You may not yet have heard
How this all occurred.
’Twas in 2006 that it started
When a newspaperman
A serial story began
To follow one young Thoroughbred
From the moment his mom did him foal.
In time all would see
If his breeding and training him led
To fulfill his owner’s cherished goal:
’Twas his wish
To see his horse a race finish
Cruising home the runaway best,
Lengths ahead of all the rest.
Scarce were the first lines written
Of the newborn foal’s story,
Than Judy did chance it to see
c
He had Secretariat in his pedigree
And was a chestnut like him—
Could he, like Big Red,
Be bound for glory
And maybe the Triple Crown win?
Once weaned,
This young Thoroughbred
Was deemed
To have the will
Of a winner–
Whenever a groom the bin did fill
For dinner,
He made sure he was first
From ’mongst the weanling bunch
The grain to munch.
Confidence burst
From his every pore.
He a white star bore,
Which his newspaper scribe
Did fittingly describe
As “a dollop
Of vanilla”—
Perhaps this youngster with the will o’
Champions going far back
Would one day himself
A great wallop
Pack at the racetrack…
As time moved along,
There was Charlie
Growing up strong
On pasture, oats, and hay,
And maybe a bit of barley,
But, sad to say,
Newspaper descriptions
Had fallen away–
There were no more progress transcriptions.
Yet week after week,
Judy, the sage,
Information did seek
On the website page
Of Pedigree Query
And one day she there did see
That this Desert Warrior progeny
Was registered now as Papa Charlie.
Then through Equibase
Judy was able
His every workout
To trace.
Would Charlie become the pride
Of his whole stable,
Judy did wonder?
Then came the day
Of his first race,
A Maiden Special Weight.
The crowd did shout,
The hooves did thunder–
Charlie contested the early pace,
Then pulled away
Down the straight,
And by the end of his run,
Charlie by three lengths
His debut race had won!
Fifty more races would come
Before his racing days were done,
And seven more times, he’d be number one.
Judy happily followed his career
From year to year.
She never saw him in person run,
But she’ll never forget
How much she had fun
When she to a local casino would go
And on him bet
To win, place or show.
Judy would watch his races on the screen
And for Papa Charlie scream–
’Twas especially fun when he won.
Then sadly he was claimed,
And at six he never did regain
The winning ways
Of his younger days.
Judy feared what would come
As Charlie began slower and slower
To run,
Falling constantly lower
In the claiming ranks.
But Judy gave thanks
When she Charlie
On the “for sale” list did see
On the CANTER website,
And she thrilled to think
That she herself just might
Be the one
To pull Charlie back from the dangerous brink.
Any interested party
To the trainer was referred.
Though the asking price Charlie to buy
Was quite high,
Judy, our smarty,
Did not for a moment quail–
She was determined to close the sale.
She and her Equi-Army team
To their piggy banks
Turned
And checked those tummies
To locate needed monies.
Judy then with the trainer conferred,
And though Charlie retirement had earned,
The trainer Judy’s offer spurned,
Saying for that sum, he preferred
Charlie further to race.
Charlie however could not keep up the pace–
He was unable to improve,
Nor could he even maintain
His low claiming race groove.
As yet more time passed,
Charlie was now not at all fast,
So the trainer decided at last
On the price to move.
Judy shrewdly made a good guess
And put three hundred
On the table,
Which was less
Than before.
The trainer said for two hundred more,
Judy’d be able
To acquire her Charlie,
And also Hudson T,
Charlie’s Thoroughbred lady friend,
Whose racing days, like his,
Had come to an end.
’Twould be 500 for the pair–
He’d be throwing in the mare,
As it were, for free.
Judy thought “D’accord!”
And did readily agree,
Though she neither horse had yet seen.
She and the trainer a time did appoint
To meet at the track–
He’d deliver both horses to her
At that point.
Thus the two concurred,
Each giving their word.
But arriving there
At the time
They’d arranged,
Judy sadly did find–
Alas and alack!–
The trainer had gone back
On his word.
He his mind
Had changed
With regards to the mare–
He had her for two hundred sold
In a separate sale,
As he the tale
To Judy told.
Though the transaction
Had already occurred
To the trainer’s satisfaction,
Both horses were still there.
Thus Judy the pair
For the first time did meet:
Charlie, her handsome “foster son,”
And the lovely Hudson–
Neither horse did disappoint!
Both were sweet
And enjoyed it when Judy
Gave each a treat.
Charlie just as grand seemed
As in the simulcasts she’d seen
When he’d raced—
A hunk after Judy’s heart.
And Hudson, for her part,
Was graced
With a beautifully dished face
And a luminous eye, round and kind,
A mare truly refined,
And to give Hudsie her due,
She had Secretariat too
In her line.
After a short time,
Judy had to bid both adieu–
Charlie at the track had to stay
Yet a day
Or two more,
Till Judy a boarding spot could find,
But then for him, now going on seven,
An earthly horse heaven
Would be in store.
The acquisition of Hudsie
Had to be
Perhaps permanently
Deferred.
With Charlie’s purchase complete,
Judy urgently a place did need
Where she Charlie could keep.
She’d already made dozens of calls,
All to no avail,
But now she simply had to prevail.
That night, before falling asleep,
Judy prayed to St. Francis
And asked that he please intercede.
It seems he indeed
Her prayer heard
And for her put in a good word
With a lady named Angela Baxter,
A sweet angel for sure,
The owner of Jocks Farm,
A place for the pleasure horse,
For–what are the chances?!–
The very next day
Judy, over the phone
Speaking
To this Angela Baxter,
Desperately asked her
If Angela could
Take Charlie in,
And Angela did say
That of course
She would,
Thus keeping
Him safe from harm.
Nor did Angela there stop—
She added she herself might opt
Charlie to adopt,
For she was seeking
A horse to be her own!
So Judy sent another prayer to heaven above
That Charlie, upon exiting the trailer,
Would right away
Win Angela’s love—
You might say
That’s no small task,
It’s a lot to ask,
But nay,
The good Lord did not fail her:
Lo and behold, Angela loved what she
At first sight did see,
And when the next day
Angela Charlie did ride,
She then and there did decide
Never with him to part–
Oh, how this warmed Judy’s heart!
Though the rescue of Charlie
Had seemed at times quite gnarly,
Our dear Jud’
Did it most brilliantly conclude!
With her first rescue successfully done,
Judy thought there possibly
Could be
One more to come,
The winsome Miss Hudson!
But before Judy was through,
That one more would turn into two…
Judy Hudson’s whereabouts did trace
To a farm not far from Angela’s place,
The mistress
Of which
Proved to be a Ms. S.,
Who sadly showed herself
(If I uncustomarily
Do say so myself)
To be a veritable b…..
Judy did wish
To see
If Ms. S. would Hudson relinquish
For an appropriate sum,
And asked Angela her to accompany
On a visit to Ms. S.’s farm.
Politely they Ms. S. approached
And with her gently broached
The subject of Hudson T.
Ms. S. escorted them to the barn
Where they were shocked to see
How very dark and small
Were the stalls
For the horses there,
Some twenty in all.
And more’s the horses’ bad luck,
They most of the day
In their stalls had to stay,
Apart from just two hours a day
When they got some fresh air
In a smallish paddock.
Judy from negative comment refrained
And to Ms. S. she just explained
That when she had with the trainer conferred,
He had told her
Hudson was to be hers,
And growing bolder,
Judy named a price for the mare
Which she thought more than fair–
She offered a full thousand.
But Ms. S. rejected that out of hand–
She did maintain
Hudson could command
Much more than twice that price,
And such was her demand.
On that she firm would remain,
Vowing Hudsie to keep
Till she got that price.
But, with ice
In every vein
Replete,
Ms. S. to Judy proposed
She could have something else quite cheap,
And she took her to see
Another mare, Summer Wind Gigi
By name,
Who, while otherwise quite nice,
Was noticeably lame.
When asked ’bout that, Ms. S. did claim
X-rays had not disclosed
Anything wrong–
Ms. S simply no longer did care
To keep the mare,
She would let her go for a song.
If a buyer
Should not come along,
She indicated
She would of this mare, most ill-fated,
In an auction dispose,
Full knowing no rider would desire
A horse that was lame–
Gigi would be fair game
To be bought by a kill buyer,
Then shipped over the border
To be slaughtered in short order.
Looking at Gigi,
Angela and Judy could plainly see
That terrible rain rot
Ravaged her coat–
Apparently she was not
Given shelter from the elements:
Twenty-four hours a day she generally spent
In a small pen open to the sky.
If Judy wished Gigi to buy,
Ms. S. was to sell disposed.
The price she proposed
Was five hundred dollars.
Judy and Angela wanted at Ms. S.
Something earthy to holler,
But with great tact,
They held themselves back
And simply looked on in dismay
As they struggled composed to stay
And pondered what to say.
Then, though their hearts to Gigi inclined,
They Ms. S.’s proffer politely declined.
On that sad note,
Judy and Angela did start to depart,
Though dread for the welfare
Of that dear mare
Filled each woman’s heart.
Scarce were they inside their car,
Still not moving from the spot,
When Judy knew she could not abide
Leaving Gigi there,
And she to Angela cried,
“How in the world can we NOT
Take that sweet horse?
Call Ms. S.
And ask if she’ll give us Gigi gratis!”
Angela of course
Ms. S’s number right away tried—
A recorded voice said “Leave a message,”
And Angela complied.
That blessedly did presage
A fortunate outcome,
For Ms. S., having had time to think it over,
In favor of their no-fee offer did decide.
That same evening the deal for Gigi was done,
And she the next day
Was on her way
To living life soon
In the clover,
Though that mare
First sorely needed the boon
Of Angela’s care.
That afternoon,
Angela checked each hoof
And forsooth!
Found the poor horse
With an abscess,
Which Angela promptly drained.
She followed up with a course
Of antibiotics,
Thinking they the problem might fix–
Meanwhile she refrained
From adding any more stress.
But when the infection returned,
Angela next to her horseshoer turned,
Who in the course of a hoof inspection
Found the cause of the infection:
A “hot nail” was discovered
And removed,
Which clearly the tender foot soothed.
Thanks to that farrier,
Gigi was straight away merrier
And soon had fully recovered!
Meanwhile, as they used to say,
Back at the Ms. S. ranch,
It did seem
That Hudson, so sadly left behind,
Still for a better day pined.
Judy felt she yet had a chance
Hudson to buy,
And to that she put her mind.
Giving it another try
With the aid of her Equi-Army team,
Who also opened their coffers,
Judy upped her offers,
And finally Judy accomplished
What she so dearly had wished!
A handsome sum
Was for Hudson arranged,
And once the money
Was exchanged,
Hudson’s life for the better changed.
She too did to Angela’s come,
For her a land of milk and honey,
Where she by day
Does run
In pastures green and sunny,
And by night she’s snug
In a stall large and airy,
All due to Judy Berube, her auntie
And her rescue fairy!
Thank heaven Judy was there for all three,
Charlie, Hudson and Gigi,
Equines fine who still at her heart tug!
Judy need have no more fears
For her Three Horseketeers.
Now Angela Charlie does own–
She’s his forever home.
Hudson is also pleased to reside
There by Charlie’s side.
Gigi has been in another home placed
Where the care she receives is first rate.
Though she’s now in a neighboring state,
Gigi forever remains
The one
Who recalls to me the strains
That once by Maurice Chevalier were sung.
With a little appropriate change,
I give to you
The famed refrain:
“Thank heaven for our dear Jud’,
For without her,
What would we Z-sters do!”
Now let’s all that refrain loudly sing
To make the heavens ring
And show our gratitude
To our dear Jud’
For all the things she does
For everyone she loves,
Most especially for us here,
Her Z-ster family,
For you see
’Tis true:
Dear Judy, without you,
What would we Z-sters do?

My Dearest Friend Trina:
These poems are overwhelmingly beautiful and thoughtful and I will treasure them.
The only thing that you forgot to include is the magnitude of your own generosity when it came to rescuing Charlie and Hudson. You offered (and in fact actually sent me, which after much effort to convince you, I returned) the full amount to cover the purchase of Hudson. You are a magnificent Poetess and Lady. Everyone in the EAN group made Charlie’s rescue possible, but you are always the first one to step up. You are the most generous and caring person; not only with words, but with actions as well. You are a very, very Special Lady. Love and Hugs, JB

Your Russ will be remembering you especially today, Judy, and in honor of your love, here again is your birthday poem from two years ago. Notes to the Reader: Judy had lost her husband and soulmate Russ just nine days prior, on April 9, 2012. Berube is pronounced in three syllables.
A Birthday Poem for Judy Berube
(April 18, 2012)
Cupid did pierce
Not one heart
But two
With the selfsame
Arrow
At a single go,
And the love he thereby did enflame
Burned bright
Till death them did part
And continues still
Through
Sorrow’s
Night
In a fierce
Afterglow.
‘Twas not quite
Five decades ago
That Judy and Russ wed
And a joined life
From then on led.
She, as his wife,
Took his last name
And became
Judy Berube—
Her wedded name
When aloud spoken
Makes on its own
A whole sweet poem
Whose inner harmony
Does befit
Her gentle loving spirit
And then too does betoken
How she and he
Did each into the other meld
And how Love
Their souls together did weld.
At Eastertide,
A time of death and rebirth,
Russ passed from this earth
To sit at the Lord’s side
Even as his beloved Judy
Still with us does abide.
She’s lost the one she did adore,
And the pain cuts her to the core—
Judy, let the tears gently
Or torrentially
Flow.
Take the time to grieve
For you know
Those tears when cried
Can be a release
And a path to emotional peace.
As the weeks and years pass,
Gradually
Let the deepest pain go.
There are future days
In store
In which you’ll find ways
To again be open to life’s attractions
And its large or small satisfactions
As once before.
Your tiny poodle lass
Lola Mae
Will help you to savor
Each day,
And you will to her return the favor.
For sure today
Russ will be looking down from above
And sending kisses your way.
We pray
That you’ll feel his –and our— love
On this, your special day.

Trina-For me, you can’t do enough poems about Judy. Keep em coming.

Trina, your poems for Judy and Russ so beautifully tell the story of two very special people.
Awesome work!

Rare and wonderful as always. We need more poems from Trina. No pressure!

Thank you, Terry, Deborah and Max. I wish I could do more, but these days it seems to be all I can do to spruce up poems from prior years. Love and hugZ, Trina

Hovis, you are the BEST. Nice description of all of the dangers lurking out there at 6″ above the ground. :) Love to all equines!

Dear Max and Kathy.I only had toast for breakfast!!I see you didn’t visit your kitchen this morning Max!!Our cats are too well-fed to be interested in the rat population.I don’t think Larry the chief mouser at no10 has ever caught any.Hovis was a scream today, will he ever understand the females in his life in his life, like all good men (and geldings)I doubt it.Our Majesty never wears a riding hat only a headscarf so Aunty C is in good company.Kauto sent his love this morning via a text from my cousin she’s having a great day.Brendan Powell is having similar tweets as Shorty now!Free the Moose.Sheena.

Hi Judy:
Lol!!! I wonder how the Moss’ feel. It seems they arrived at Lanes End over a week ago. It will be very interesting to hear the scoop when Zenny has her foal.
Take care,

I was away from the blog for awhile due to computer problems and if this has been posted before I apologize. There was almost Jackson Bend type accident last weekend when California Chrome was working out at Los Alamitos. There were two loose horses on the track. While a collision was avoided, Art Sherman got together with track management and a deal was worked out in which CC got his own time on the track alone to work out. He now works out on his own from 7-7:30.

Dear TC GP:
Oh my, thank God no one was harmed. Good for Mr. Sherman. Love and Hugs, JB

Terry, I had not heard this. Thank goodness no horses or people were hurt. Poor Jackson Bend, just never fully recovered from his accident. So glad he had a caring owner who retired him before worse could happen.

Hi Terry:
Just wondering if you are referring to the accident that occurred at The Belmont! That incident I read both horses were killed instantly. I didn’t know Jackson Bend was involved. I really liked him. I read up on it.
Thank goodness nothing happened to California Chrome. I have been following this horse since his win on the last day at Hollywood Park.
Thanks.

Hi Terry:
I read your post too fast. I see that you mentioned the incident with Jackson Bend occurred last week. That is too bad. I really liked that horse. I am sure the owners are just sick about it.
Take care.

Oops, another earthquake here. At least it was a small one, 2.8.

Oh good grief! Now I have to worry not only about Zenny, but also horse wrecks and earthquakes! California Chrome is my current favorite.
