Alys sent over new conformation shots of Ziconic, now two months into yearling prep at Lane’s End. Also below, Todd Claunch captured a special moment between Ziconic and his feline buddy Linda.
Barbara Wood family reunions were always held at Glen Rose. A relative used to own property with artesian springs in the area. My Aunt Frankie and Uncle Cecil are also buried in Glen Rose. Also Uncle Sonny.
There’s a new video on the Saratoga website under “news” that shows both Cozmic One and Jess’s Dream at Saratoga. They look a lot alike, a lot, so watch carefully.
Dear Debbie.Just heard there will be a video up tomorrow.Deri is turning into a awesome bird, she was flying along the Dyfi today. It’s even difficult for me to recognize them now they are all the same size.Monty has beautiful orange eyes and no rings on his legs,Glesni is 12R a blue ring and the chicks have the same coloured rings Deri is 5R and Gwynant is 3R Deri also has darker feathers on her head than Gwynant.Hope that helps.Love and hugs Sheena.
Wow Ziconic, you are truly a beauty. I must tell you, I was very excited to read that your brother’s first race may come as soon as this fall at Belmont Park. I’ll be there for his first race you can count on that. I’ll be there for your first race too.
To tell you the truth, YOU look like you have already won the KD!!!!! I am very impressed with you just standing there. Lol!
Thank you Lanes End and Team Z for the gorgeous photo and update.
Hello again! Hey Ziconic, I am very flattered! I see you have a friend named Linda. Of course that’s my name too. I see you keep very good company with having friends with the name Linda! ! Lol.
Also I don’t think that Lanes End could get your hoofs any shiner. They are so shining I can see the gleam with my little cell phone.
Take care Ziconic. As I told your brother Coz, don’t forget to stretch before and after your workouts.
Hi Sheena
Just got home and saw your message. Thanks for all the osprey info to help me with who is who. I will rely on you mostly as I love the news you share about the family!!
Debbie and Sheena. Here’s a photo of Vera in her hangar in Iceland. They are heading to England tomorrow to arrive at 1:30 pm. War vets will be there to meet her and her crew.
Dear Max.I will have to keep an eye out for Vera tomorrow.Hopefully the weather will co-operate,we’ve been promised heavy showers.Bomber Command were treated shamefully after the war,it’s only recently a memorial was erected to the dead.Hope Matthew enjoys the last leg of the journey.Free the Moose PU Dan and all sick horses everywhere.Niss4Senate.Sheena.
Dear Judy.Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT Little Cap Hercules and all the Sweeties.Watched a fascinating documentary tonight about Lily the Black bear ,she’s got her own facebook page. The hunters shot her daughter Hope and her mum June.As long as I live I will never understand the pleasure they get from killing these beautiful animals. Also June was collared because of the research they were carrying out and now they’ve had to remove all the collars so Lily is a “sitting duck” in hunting season. She lives in Eagles Nest, Minnesota.Love and hugs SheenaX
I wish a better longer life for Lily and sorry to hear about the others Sheena. I would never want to come between a black bear and her young, NO WAY, but this just is a natural way a mom protects her young. I respect them as beautiful animals too.
hugs, Sally B
Did I read a few pages back that you didn’t use a smart phone. Me either, but I’m afraid that’s about to change. I’ve resisted I think long enough. Come September l9 when the new one’s come out. Yep, I’m getting one. I’m real excited. Apple’s got me hooked.
I think i’m getting the smaller of the two. Their gorgeous and a little bigger. They say they’ve made improvements but guess I wouldn’t know because this is my first one. Think I will love it.
Oops and the next day September 20th I believe California Chrome may race.
Come on September…………………………
Peggy (N) I give you credit for taking the plunge into the latest technology! Smart phones, I phones, Ipods or pads; WOW, I get overwhelmed just thinking of them. Do you have to be smart to use a Smart phone…hah
I am sure one can get up to date info asap all day with these. I see people wherever I go looking down at them. I’m old fashioned though, I still like email and my home phone. hah
Go California Chrome!!!
hugs, Sally B
Peggy
When you get your smart phone, you will have to get Horse Races Now app.
It is free. Designed by Ken & Sheila McPeek.
You can set it up with your own favorites: tracks, jockeys, trainers, horses.
Easy to use and great when you are sitting in a doctor’s office and waiting.
Barbara, it alone is enough to make you want a smart phone.
With the smart phone, I have found that just because it has a bell-and-whistle,
doesn’t mean I have to use it.
Hugs, BGG
Bluegrass Girl; Congrat to O! He sure ended his career in an outstanding way leaving the others in the dust. He is gorgeous, always knew that, and I wish him his best days to come.

Thanks for that, BGG! I had not seen Orfevre’s last race, although I had seen his farewell show. What a performance, the others just had no chance, the way he was racing away from them all!
Madeline Auerbach on the odyssey to help TBs
Off-Track Thoroughbreds By Susan Salk on August 7, 2014
On track to provide $2 million in grants to Thoroughbred charities across America, doubling its initial contribution since beginning a landmark effort to provide a safety net to charities rehabilitating and re-homing ex-racehorses, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is on a grand mission that began, in part, with an innocent question
Madeline Auerbach, a well-known California racehorse owner simply wanted to know how to find a really good retirement home for her ex-racehorse Lenny From Malibu. “I was really unaware of the whole panoply of retirement, and I started to get my feet wet, and looking for a good home for him. I knew little about how to retire him, and I wanted to make sure I knew where he was at all times,” http://offtrackthoroughbreds.com/2014/08/07/madeline-auerbach-on-the-odyssey-to-help-tbs/
Love this one. There is nothing better for the spirit than to see a horse sleeping. Miss Princess Z doesn’t let her pal interfere with her nap. Must have learned that from Life Is Sweet. Sleep well little girl.
I was roaming and dissecting the September Yearling Sale catalog and saw something that pulled at my heart strings. HIP 140 is a half brother to Mama Tasty and he’s up for sale for right now. I don’t know if anyone brought that up yet, but I figured I would let you guys know on the off chance that no one had. :-)
Other than that special bay gem, it is a very exciting sale this year. The first foal out of Life At Ten is in there and a half brother to My Miss Aurelia. Hope springs eternal at the granddaddy sale of them all, doesn’t it?

JudyB. KJ is a chestnut and Parisia is a gray. Bay P is a bay. A rainbow family. He’s probably nice looking now because both of his parents are stunning horses. KJ as we all know is a premier stallion. He gets results with his young ones on the track.

Dear Max:
Yes, I’ll bet he’s beautiful. Sometimes they have the preview videos. I’ll see if I can find one on him if it’s available. Love and Hugs, JB
Went to visit with “little” Thurzel this morning: the 7 others in the paddock must have got out of bed on the wrong side – were squealing, biting, kicking and generally behaving badly. My girl and her mate were off to the side watching – told her to ignore that sort of behaviour. She was a little stand offish today, but keep reminding myself to be patient – she’s only been home since Sunday. The mad mob blocked the gate, and were not to be moved, so I took another course of action and climbed the fence. Am trying to work out how to post a photo – not good at all this technology stuff! Hugs KathyR.
Kathy R,
Sounds like every visit is an adventure. Keep up the good work it will pay off in the long run. Would love to see a picture of this girl, Judy B is an expert on how to post pics, she’ll show you how. hugs
If you would like to email me, I can explain what I do to post photos on Z’s Blog. All the acting out is probably due to “little” Thurzel’s arrival in the herd. It’s great that she’s made a BFF in the little Brown one. Soon the rest will accept her and all will be well. Same thing happens every time Angela gets a new boarder and eventually he/she is accepted by the paddock mates. Kudos to you for being able to climb the fence. Afraid I could never manage that. Love and Hugs, JB
KathyR. Glad for this report. Hope things continue to go well. Just remember that T’s just getting to know you. She’ll come around. Bring treats.
Free the Moose!
Good for you KathyR – I think a lot of uss wouldn’t make it over a fence! I know nothing about horse behavior, but I hope yours will settle in soon so that she will be easier to visit. The whole thing is still just amazing to me :-). Hugs.
Here’s to a good weekend for all. Hovis has a new photo up which shows a freshly pulled mane. Looking handsome and manly. He’s also written another poem, a good one to remember those who gave up their lives for freedom in WWI.
Free the Moose!
Thank you for our Hovis update. Hovis, don’t worry, you still look very handsome. Fingers crossed you get to jump! Lovely poem, Hovis. Thank you! Happy weekend to all.
Thanks, Max. Reading the adventures of Hovis is a wonderful treat. Right up there with Z Princess and the Pea sleeping. Have a nice weekend Z fans! Good luck my cappin buddies!
Thank you for this latest Hovis Diary. Had me laughing out loud as usual. He does look very handsome in the photo. Hope he gets to be part of the jump competition this weekend. Lovely poem too. Love and Hugs, JB
Hope that Hovis hasn’t been misled and will get to jump. I’ve read on FB that they DID at least practice jumping this week resulting in a very tired horse and human. His poem was very touching as usual. Thanks to Sheena via Max for our Friday treat.
Bravo, Hovis!!
Great poem — you are very talented!
Sure hope you get to do some jumping, Hovis, and not the dreaded “s” word.
You look very handsome (and manly) with the extra grooming. Hovis has natural good-looks!
Thanks, Max, for this latest entry from Hovis! Hugs
Life is one long courtship of things we want or fear. Whether it is something we want or something we want to avoid, we gu na da yi li da s di, court it, we woo it through our thoughts and words, reaching with intense effort. When our desires are too rigid, we have been known to create a psychological wall that shuts off the natural flow to carry out our heart’s desire. We simply can’t do what we want to do. When something is to be avoided at all costs, we tend to vision it so vividly that it has no choice but to come our way. The same mental law turns back what we want as well. We have to be careful about what we want, because we are apt to get it. It is our nature to court, but wisdom should always be there.
I ran to the spring to fetch water for them when they were thirsty. By these little services I won their affection…
Playful Calf
@Peggy (N)–say it isn’t so! I may be the lone holdout on the planet for Smartphones. Actually, one reason is that since I spend so much time on the computer, I don’t want to be “plugged in” to anything else. If I want to text, I can use hubby’s phone for that, but the photo part of it escapes me totally. I have a Kindle, but I still prefer books. Only got the Kindle because I don’t have room for any more books. Happy phoning and hugs.
Barbara,
No you are not the only “old Fogey” that doesn’t have a smart phone, and guess what I have a land line too, ha, ha. Kids tell me to get with the program but I had enough of phones for 28 years working……..like my peace and quiet and unaccessibleness(? is that a word, if not it should be). I’m just one of the old dinosauers I guess. hugs
LOL, Sue. We have a land line too! But I may trump you in that I still pay bills by check!
pamhomeier
OMG, Barbara!!! Me, too. Land line and still pay with checks! I get a little annoyed when I go to Walmart, write a check, and they hand it back to me when they are done with it. I do know how to text on my little phone but when I first started out I didn’t know how to space between words. My sister and her girls would attend wrestling tourneys on weekends and would text me how the boys were doing. I would reply back to them with no spacing and they would fill the time between matches trying to figure out what I had said. I have since learned how to space. I am still amazed that I am able to get on this blog!
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Barb,
Yeah you got me there, hubby pays bills on the computer thru the bank, and I have an ATM card……imagine that. hugs
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Barbara W.,
Me, too! Land line and checks — I will continue to pay bills by the tried and true method. Don’t really trust “cyberspace and virtual reality”.
I prefer books, too. Basically, I am very low tech, and do not want to be plugged in to some device all the time. Keep it simple.
I always did like dinosaurs! LOL
Hugs
I resisted too. Now I have a Samsung Note II and I use it for everything. I read and send emails on it. I take pictures. I watch videos. I text. I search the internet. And – amazingly – I make phone calls! I have found I don’t use my laptop hardly at all. I take it out when I have complex files to work on or really want to see photos and videos really big but the rest of the time lately, I’m on my cell. Shop for one with the right sized screen and keyboard for your eyes and fingers.
BGG: Can I put the horse racing app on my android-based cell?
Dear Kathy.Love the name “Playful Calf”.I can’t seem to access any videos on FB today, maybe because I don’t belong.I watched Deri’s new video on their you-tube channel, lovely views of the countryside and the dyfi plus the cows!!You can access it from the dyfi’s homepage.www.dyfiospreyproject.com
Great news that someone donated all those $’s to Fubu must be a huge relief for Kimberly. He visited the vet again and got to visit Petco!!!Hope he can eat a bit more.Grumpy Cat was in NYC launching her new book, she was looking as grumpy as ever,am sure she is a happy girl really she has over 6million FB friends now.
I saw Marty the news anchor! love his little desk and studio.Zoe’s post about Mr Bob had me in tears, her owner has such patience and understanding. They make a wonderful team.Hope you have a great Friday.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.
“Playful Calf” is a cool name! In addition to enjoying the ospreys it is a huge bonus to get to enjoy the beautiful countryside. Very pastoral! That’s wonderful that someone donated all that money to Fubu’s care. There are some wonderful people in this world. Sometimes we lose sight of that! I wonder if Grumpy Cat got to meet Boo and Buddy??? That would put a smile on her face for sure! Marty always entertains. He seemed to enjoy his melon. The account of Zoe and Mr. Bob was extremely touching. Zoe and her Mommy do wonderful work. You’re right, they are a great team. Happy Friday and happy weekend to you. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.
Dear BGG
Thanks for the article on Ofevre -watching his last race was a thrill!
I was so happy to learn about Madeline Auerback and her involvement with raising funds through CARMA and TAA which go to help retired thoroughbreds. What a wonderful woman.

Does anyone know about racetrack dirt? Do they use a special kind of dirt? Where do they get it? I read that Keeneland had hired a man that was very experienced to handle the new dirt track.
Here’s an article and video on Keeneland’s new Dirt Track. States the dirt was acquired from a quarry in Northern Kentucky. I’m guessing different tracks acquire dirt from different locations to refurbish their dirt tracks. Interesting read. Love and Hugs, JB
Dear Debbie.I am waiting to hear if “vera” has arrived, the last tweet from matthew said airborne!Have just heard Lady has definitely started her long migration she hasn’t been seen since Tuesday.Like me,they always feel sad at this time of year saying goodbye but only hope she can return to celebrate her 25th anniversary next year.I hope so too.She is an inspirational bird.Hugs Sheena.
Mary, and anyone interested, Reckless has a facebook page with videos and all kinds of info and pictures of the statue just dedicated to her this year. She was an amazing horse and beloved by the Marine Corps. hugs
Hi Sheena
Lady is an inspiration, wishing her a safe trip and hope she is back for her 25th next year. Hope to watch the ospreys again and follow them from their arrival .I will never forget Deri’s first fledge- will miss seeing them.
Fingers crossed for Vera and Matthew and crew.
Dear Max
I love the Hovis updates, such a handsome boy and SO funny..My friend Anne took Ash on a Trek course last week and he loved the excitement-went through a gate with balloons etc he was so brave . It was so nice to walk him and graze in the shade yesterday.not too many fliess-whew. Hope Hovis gets over to the jump competiton on the weekend..
BGG-loved the video on Chrome, really rooting for him!!!!!!!!
Debbie and Sheena. Vera is okay. She landed proudly in the torrential UK rain. Plan was for the British Lanc aka Thumper to take off and meet her for a brief fly past, but it was considered to be too much for the other Lanc to handle. I guess that the girl Lancs are the tougher customers. Vera is obviously not afraid of the rain. Hope that this tour goes well for both of them.

Dear Max,
Thank you for our Hovis update. Hovis, don’t worry, you still look very handsome. Fingers crossed you get to jump! Lovely poem, Hovis. Thank you! Happy weekend to all.

Hovis, you’re the man! Love the poem too. Thanks, Max.

Thanks, Max. Reading the adventures of Hovis is a wonderful treat. Right up there with Z Princess and the Pea sleeping. Have a nice weekend Z fans! Good luck my cappin buddies!

Dear Max:
Thank you for this latest Hovis Diary. Had me laughing out loud as usual. He does look very handsome in the photo. Hope he gets to be part of the jump competition this weekend. Lovely poem too. Love and Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Hope that Hovis hasn’t been misled and will get to jump. I’ve read on FB that they DID at least practice jumping this week resulting in a very tired horse and human. His poem was very touching as usual. Thanks to Sheena via Max for our Friday treat.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Bravo, Hovis!!
Great poem — you are very talented!
Sure hope you get to do some jumping, Hovis, and not the dreaded “s” word.
You look very handsome (and manly) with the extra grooming. Hovis has natural good-looks!
Thanks, Max, for this latest entry from Hovis! Hugs

August 8 Cherokee Devotional

I’m just one of the old dinosauers I guess. hugs
Barbara Wood

Barb,
Yeah you got me there, hubby pays bills on the computer thru the bank, and I have an ATM card……imagine that.
LOL
Hugs
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
No smart phone here either, and there isn’t likely to be one anytime soon (although I love my iPad). Landline and checks still operational here :-)

Oh Barbara:
I resisted too. Now I have a Samsung Note II and I use it for everything. I read and send emails on it. I take pictures. I watch videos. I text. I search the internet. And – amazingly – I make phone calls! I have found I don’t use my laptop hardly at all. I take it out when I have complex files to work on or really want to see photos and videos really big but the rest of the time lately, I’m on my cell. Shop for one with the right sized screen and keyboard for your eyes and fingers.

Kathy
Dear Sheena,
“Playful Calf” is a cool name! Kathy.

Does anyone know about racetrack dirt? Do they use a special kind of dirt? Where do they get it? I read that Keeneland had hired a man that was very experienced to handle the new dirt track.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Vicki:
Here’s an article and video on Keeneland’s new Dirt Track. States the dirt was acquired from a quarry in Northern Kentucky. I’m guessing different tracks acquire dirt from different locations to refurbish their dirt tracks. Interesting read. Love and Hugs, JB

Max
Debbie and Sheena. Vera is okay. She landed proudly in the torrential UK rain. Plan was for the British Lanc aka Thumper to take off and meet her for a brief fly past, but it was considered to be too much for the other Lanc to handle. I guess that the girl Lancs are the tougher customers. Vera is obviously not afraid of the rain. Hope that this tour goes well for both of them.
