Happy Thursday!
Back in June, while on our way to Lane’s End, we stopped at Belmont to see Cozmic One. Coz, Zenyatta’s 2012 colt, is now in training with John Shirreffs. So far, we’ve followed Coz from yearling prep at Lane’s End and breaking at Mayberry Farm in Florida to his arrival and training at Belmont. (If you’ve missed anything, you can read it all here.) Today you’ll meet Omar Velez, who walks us through a typical day for the two year-old colt.
Since this video was filmed, Shirreffs has moved his barn and crew up to Saratoga. Watch the video below and then scroll down for photos. At the end of the post, you will see a glimpse into Cozmic One’s new life in Saratoga.
Enjoy!

Coz looks amazing! Hope he can run like the wind, but if not will love him just the same anyways! Really disappointed though that I read that John is not planning to start him for a year….. Was hoping to see him in the Derby in 2015! :-(

He could still potentially make it to the Derby. Not starting as a 2 year old means he got lots more time to grow and develop. As long as his eligibility for the derby trial races are all good, he can still make it as a 3 year old.

Coz looks amazing. Love his attitude. Love how his ears are pinned at the competition, “dare you to beat me!” So glad John is bringing him along slowly. Perhaps bringing him along slowly, he will rival his mother’s career, and have several Breeder’s Cups before retiring as a stallion. God Bless you Coz, John, Jerry, Ann and everyone involved with his life and career.

John is very good at judging when his horses are mature enough to compete. So glad for Coz that he is. It is one quick way to ruin a horse, to start them too early.

I am sooo pleased that you folks are giving this horse time to grow and develop naturally. This makes all the difference in the world. Plus, many more years of racing………. SOOO happy to hear this! Well done.

Cozzy, Handsome young man, you look just like your Daddie. Have fun, enjoy the work, be good to John, ask for an angel if you don’t already have one. Love you dearly, sweet Prince. Lisag

He looks like Zenyatta! He is so beautiful and everyone is taking good care of him. I like that you are not rushing him.. When he is ready, he will be ready!
