Happy Thursday!
Back in June, while on our way to Lane’s End, we stopped at Belmont to see Cozmic One. Coz, Zenyatta’s 2012 colt, is now in training with John Shirreffs. So far, we’ve followed Coz from yearling prep at Lane’s End and breaking at Mayberry Farm in Florida to his arrival and training at Belmont. (If you’ve missed anything, you can read it all here.) Today you’ll meet Omar Velez, who walks us through a typical day for the two year-old colt.
Since this video was filmed, Shirreffs has moved his barn and crew up to Saratoga. Watch the video below and then scroll down for photos. At the end of the post, you will see a glimpse into Cozmic One’s new life in Saratoga.
Enjoy!

Hi Cappers
Well we really crapped out so to speak.
I thought for sure someone would get it right but nope we all got the goose egg.
I hope we can do better this week. Another big race with lots of possibilities.
On another note my Angel is sick from eating a very small can of dog food. Beneful 3 oz can of poison. I ran out of chicken on July 3rd and gave her this tiny can over her dry. Angel has been sick all month. I took her to the vet last week and we tried some probiotics but they did not work. Angel just got sicker. We are on rice, chicken and yogurt for weeks. Angel has to eat special dry now too when ever I can get it to start mixing in the other. Another week before that starts. She has lost some weight too. I poisoned my baby and feel so bad that she is still sick. I hope she can eat the new special food next week.
I love all the attention Team Z and LE has been showering us with. I pray that they all stay safe and healthy.
One last thing I am concerned about Del Mar and the number of deaths. What can they do to that track to stop that from continuing.
Ebby worked on the turf the other day. OMG please don’t race Ebby on that track.
To many babies are gone to many to list my heart is sick just thinking about them.
love you guys Sue
Ann NC
Hope Angel feels better.
Hugs!

Dear Sue:
Oh I am so sorry Angel got sick from the dog food. Please don’t blame yourself. I let one of the neighbors give Lola Mae a piece of jerky type treat and she was sick for a couple of days. We are not aware of what effect some of these foods will have on our little darlings. I hope the new food does the trick and Angel feels better soon. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Z Fans:
Just got back from the farm and what a story I have to tell you. Seems the Blanket Bandit and his gang made a run for it one afternoon last week. Yes, one of the people on the farm went into the paddock to get some fire wood stored there and when he left he did not close the access gate. Seems Charlie, Dakota and two other horses made a run for it and were headed toward one of the main roads that boarder the farm. Luckily, they stopped to graze and one of the men who boards two horses at the farm saw them and realized they were on the other side of the fence and not in the paddock. He sent a text to Angela and headed out to where the horses were. He had to go around them so that he could herd them toward the open gate and get them back inside the paddock. Someone else joined him and they were, thankfully, able to get the horses back inside safely and close the gate. The best part of the story is that Charlie, Dakota and quite a few others are left outside overnight in the warm weather and it could have been a disaster if Butch did not see them and realize that they were on the outside of the paddock. I hate to think what could have happened if no one realized they were loose until the next morning. Now, Angela keeps them in the paddock close to the barn overnight and not in the far paddock near the access gate. Whew!
I was able to visit with Charlie today. I led him into his stall and gave him some treats and we talked for a while. I told him to behave himself and not to scare the wits out of me and everyone else again. I gave him a big hug and he went back into his paddock.
Hudson had a wonderful lesson with Amanda. She jumped triples with no problem and she enjoyed her treats after she was cool walked. She’s improving all the time. Love and Hugs, JB
Janet Newman
Judy B,
So fortunate that man came by and realized what was going on.
Charlie’s “Angel’s” were working over time looking out for that group.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy
So glad all were gotten back safely. Same thing happened to mine years ago. Ga State Patrol called in the middle of the night telling us our horses were out. Horrible night.
First time that had ever happened to ours too. All of ours were gotten back safely too.
Judy, so so glad all are safe. The Angels were definately looking out for them and mine.
Barbara Wood
Judy–what a story. SO glad their guardian angels were watching over them.
Hugs to you and LM too.
KathyR
Dear Judy: So pleased that little escapade ended safely – as other folk have said, the angels were on the lookout. Hope you made it very clear to Charlie that that sort of behaviour is not at all helpful to hearts or blood pressure. Hugs, KathyR

JudyB. Few can resist the lure of the open road. Think about escape myself from time to time. No offence meant, but Charlie probably listened to your words of wisdom and said to himself: yeah, right! Glad however that the adventure ended well.

Dear JB,
Thank goodness all ended well for the escapees. Give my best to, Butch! Our hero!

Dear Ann:
Yes, Charlie’s always up to something. He has a small, new scar on his head now. God knows how he got that. Probably pulling on someone’s fly mask. Butch is definitely a hero. I think he’s the same one that recognized Ruby was pregnant with Diamond and not just a little chubby as everyone had thought. Quite a guy. He’s a very dedicated horseman too. One of his horses has Asthma and needs to be administered an inhaler every day. He’s there taking care of him without fail. I welcome all the Huhs or Hugs I can get. Love and Hugs, JB

Yes, thank God the Angels were watching over Charlie and the other horses that day and thank God for Butch’s keen eye. Wow, Peggy, that must have been so scary for you and looks like the Angels were working over time that night too.

We talk about choosing our friends, but true friends are self-selected. It is they who decide to respond and by what method. And finally they make themselves our friends by being loyal and having a genuine concern for our well being-or allowing privacy when it is needed. Acquaintances wait and judge. And sometimes it is better to be acquaintances when we cannot find a common ground on which to be friends. There is honesty in admitting we cannot be dear friends to all people. But there is always something special. A friend is unali-without question or fear or concern for equal time. This is why friends are dear to us. They have chosen to be so.

Dear Kathy.Another glorious Goodwood day.Ah,yes our green and pleasant land.I suppose that’s why I love our changeable climate.I got on a page called Lily’s bucket list a dog dying of cancer she’s so brave!Joey received a big donation for his fund I have noticed his likes are rising so fast.Fubu is eating his kitty gravy but his poor mouth looks so very sore.
Marty was handing out some good adbice last night lol and he knew when it was time for his snack!Stunning sunrises on Zoe’s page.Kingman is coming into the pre-parade ring just now for the Sussex.Deri is definitely getting some helicopter training in today,Gwynant was back at the nest this morning.Have a lovely day.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena. Dear Sheena,
I found out about Lily from Zoe’s page. Lily has such a sweet face and her mom loves her so much. It’s heartbreaking that Lily is terminal. Congratulations to Joey for doing so much good. I agree Fubu’s mouth looks extremely sore. One wonders if it is in his best interest to keep him around. Very tough call. Marty never ceases to entertain. What a rat! AZ gets some beautiful sunrises. Did you see the pic of Zoe with all those big stuffed bears? She looks so tiny in comparison but she sits there, very brave! Enjoy the races and enjoy keeping track of the ospreys. Have a great day. Sheena,
Thank you for all your posts and up dates about the Dyfi Osprey Project. I have been following the chicks from hatching to fledging, and I have learned so much about Osprey behaviors. Here in Florida we have Ospreys flying about where ever there is water. I did not realize how fortunate we are here in the US. I have a nest two blocks from my house, and I have been lucky to watch chicks being fledged nearly every year. But, I never really appreciated what a treasure we have until I started to follow the Dyfi Osprey Project in Wales. I have learned so many new things about Ospreys because you pointed the way with your posts. Thank you!

Dear Max.Terrific run by Kingman in the Sussex. How that horse didn’t win the guineas I’ll never know unless it was because of the strong pace in that race.Wow,the speed in the last furlong, it was a snail’s pace up until then, very tactical affair.I’m sure Juddmonte can’t believe they have a top-class miler so soon after Frankel.Poor Paul Hanagan fractured his arm in a fall yesterday and is in a race to be back for Taghrooda in York. The ups and downs of racing.Free the Moose!!Niss4Senate.Sheena.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sheena, Max and Z Fans:
Congrats to Kingman; another gorgeous Chestnut Club member. Best wishes to PH. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
Sheena. Congrats to Kingman. It looked bad for a second there. Could it have been the jockey? Kingman saved it, but could not save the Guineas because the field split up. The jockey has to judge the pace on two sides. Only Sea The Moon seems to be able to do that. This race might have been fast at the end, but overall the time does not stand up to Wise Dan standards. Danny consistently runs a faster mile. He always ran faster than Frankel too. Not enough peeps over here appreciate how great Dan really is.
JudyB. Australia is a chestnut. Kingman’s a bay.

Thanks for enlightening me. Don’t know why I thought Kingman was a Chestnut. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max.Of course we all appreciate what a brilliant horse WD is!!I have just never liked comparing horses ,far better to appreciate them ALL for their greatness. As you already know with WD they can be fragile and anything can go wrong.
The race today was run at a snail’s pace no one would “make” the running but gosh Kingman was certainly speedy in the last furlong.
Sad to hear about Kid Cassidy over in Galway.Free the Moose!Niss4Senate Sheena.
Max
Sheena. I wish that I were as fragile as Dan. During that episode with colic, he never spiked a temperature, lost the shine from his coat, got depressed or missed a meal. He lost less than 10 pounds. He even corrected the colic problem on his own. LoPresti says that Dan is now tougher than ever. Totally great and an inspiration is the Danny. King of the Chess Club. Ziconic, learn from your momma and Dan.

So much has happened since have been and come back from holidays in Ireland – Both Coz and Ziconic are handsome individuals and I never tire of photos and videos- thank you Team Zenyatta!
Had the fortune of watching the Irish Derby in person and seeing Australia cross the finish line the winner was amazing – could one dream that he or one of the Galileo lined horses see Zenyatta some day?
Came across a neat blog about the Thoroughbred series, not sure which would remember or have read them, Ashleigh’s Wonder and all the fictional horses and characters were my heroes growing up along with Pony Pals, Saddle Club, Black Stallion, and any of those books geared towards young readers.
http://espn.go.com/horse-racing/story/_/id/11282420/writing-wonder?src=mobile&rand=ref~{%22ref%22:%22https://www.facebook.com/%22}
Very cool.
Keep it up Coz!!
Celeste_in_TX
Thanks for the link to that article! How cool. Several years ago – after my daughters were grown up – I ran across the Thoroughbred series, as well as The Saddle Club books and read most of them before they went to the recycling bin. Wonderful books for young girls – and even older women – lol!! Wonderful to learn about the series and the author – thank you!!
Ann NC
Thanks, Tiz. Enjoyed it very much.
Celeste, cute. Those books are in my daughter’s room and she refuses to part with her old friends. Don’t blame her.
Tiz Herself
I will never part with mine – they are at my parents for the moment because of storage issues— I don’t have all of them, I think I stopped buying after #56 or something, but they will always be mine. My parents are under oath that they are never to sell them..
I also have a wide collection of my little ponies (originals) and Grand Champion horses (can’t get them from stores where I live in Alberta anymore) and I will also never part from those!
Tiz Herself
Those books made me laugh, cry and everything… the one named Storm’s Ransom…. that was a tear jerker and the first book had its moments too as Ashleigh worked to save Wonder. I also like it too how they made it realistic by having the horses win some and lose too.

Dear TH:
How great is that. You got to see Australia win. Wonderful. Love an Hugs, JB
Tiz Herself
He had an aura to him for sure – like Zenyatta he is the kind of horse that when he steps out on a racecourse that he is all you see lol… there were many many times when Zenyatta raced that my eyes were only on her the whole way around and it would be like she were the only one running.
I had a two euro win voucher on Australia – wish I had been able to get the ticket back after cashing in however i do have a photo of it. The two euro bet voucher came with the package for the Derby.
Also wish that I had gone with my instinct to do a Coolmore trifecta – I used another bet to box Australia and his stablemate Orchestra. I debated for a while whether not I wanted to include Kingfisher and decided not to – big mistake lol… cause of course Kingfisher was second and Orchestra was third – both were at really good prices. I wouldn’t have bet more than 2 euro but it would have paid for supper.
I had a Coolmore trifecta in a sense though as earlier in the day on the Irish Derby card I bet a Coolmore horse named Fountain of Youth in his race and he won (at really good odds too – he was 20 to 1 on the morning line I believe and was 14 to 1 when he left the gate) also had the joy of betting on Giovanni Boldini in his race. He was even money so I made my two euro back, but it was great to see him there too.
Fantastic day, the Curragh is right up there with my top three favorite horse places to go. The first being Spruce Meadows in Calgary, the second Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, and now the third the Curragh.
I will have a few prints done of my Australia pics. They are treasures for sure.
Am contemplating ordering some of Kingman, The Grey Gatsby, and Taghrooda…. awesome European contingent as always.

July 31 Cherokee Devotional
Rejoice when the going gets rough, when everything turns mean. It is time to shout and clap our hands-if only in the privacy of our own minds. To rejoice in difficulty doesn’t seem reasonable, because the natural way would be to give up and cry. But we rebound from trouble faster when we turn off the tears and turn on the joy. It comes from the inside and goes to the outside-and that is how the u hi so di, the spell or gloom, is broken. If we have never done it before, we need to learn how to think joy and act joyful, because the heart is listening-and it is out of the heart that all issues are settled.
I beg you now to believe that, all miserable as we seem in your eyes, we consider ourselves nevertheless much happier than you.

Dear Kathy.I am late visiting our furbabies today ,shopping day and the supermarket was so busy!I hope Steve arrived back home safely!Estimate is running today in the Goodwood Cup for Her Majesty, It’s turned very humid again.
Deri is still on the nest but Gwynant is keeping her company at the moment remember the girls were 51 days old when they fledged last year.
Was’nt Marty hilarious last night ., I love his CEO outfit and the fact his several times great grandpa flew with the Wright brothers!I think the US is going to be full of Marty Marts it’s a pity some of our bankers hadn’t put their monies in a safe place! He’s a very wise biznessman.Strang story on Joey’s about the trainer keeping that dog ,he’s had to return him now but there was talk of abuse.Very sad.Fubu certainly had some rain his momma is so good to the feral cats.He was lucky to get another gift card.Hope you have a great day.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.

Dear Sheena,
Steve got home without any problems. Thanks for asking! Fingers crossed that Estimate does well in today’s race. Gwynant is being such a good brother to Deri! Marty is as funny and entertaining as ever. He looks very royal in his crown! I think Marty Mart might even bypass Walmart from the looks of things. That certainly was a strange story on Joey’s page. Hope the authorities keep a watch on that one! Stay safe and dry, Fubu! Bless his mom for taking care of the feral cats! Boo is creeping ever so close to 15M! Have a happy Friday Eve. Hard to believe Cozmic One is already training with John S!. He looks good and healthy. Amazing to watch him grow. Ann Moss must be so proud of him. What lovely pictures. Wish I could fly to Saratoga.
Thanks Team Z for the pictures.

Hello, I was wondering where do you buy halters for your horses? Also, what does the groomer use to fix up Cozmic One so that he looks so splendid?
Jenn
I’m really hoping that there will be a helmet-cam like there had been when Zenyatta was doing workouts. Those really give a great perspective of the horse! And since I can’t ride a horse (no place nearby to do so), helmet-cam is a fantastic way to ride!
Kalar Walters
^_^ Love!! I love the way he moves. He’s so regal in a canter.

So excited to see Coz at ‘Toga. Comparisons to Jess’s Dream (also at the Spa) are flying. All the pundits agree that John’s skill, patience and horse-sense with Zenny indicate that he will approach a still-maturing Coz the same way. The proof: Fresh Feline’s win in the 10th race on July 25th. Thanks for the thrills, John! (And the winning ticket!)
Ann K
Maybe Coz will race at Saratoga near the end of August. Why else would John have brought him up from Belmont? I hope that he doesn’t run against JD right away. JD is several months older. Doesn’t he have about three months on Coz?
