Happy Thursday!
Back in June, while on our way to Lane’s End, we stopped at Belmont to see Cozmic One. Coz, Zenyatta’s 2012 colt, is now in training with John Shirreffs. So far, we’ve followed Coz from yearling prep at Lane’s End and breaking at Mayberry Farm in Florida to his arrival and training at Belmont. (If you’ve missed anything, you can read it all here.) Today you’ll meet Omar Velez, who walks us through a typical day for the two year-old colt.
Since this video was filmed, Shirreffs has moved his barn and crew up to Saratoga. Watch the video below and then scroll down for photos. At the end of the post, you will see a glimpse into Cozmic One’s new life in Saratoga.
Enjoy!

Godspeed to Untapable and Rosie today. I always get nervous when the fillies run against the boys. Untapable is good but don’t know yet if she is in the same class as Zenny, Rachel and Rags to Riches. With Zenny’s size and running style we didn’t have to worry about the boys bullying her.

With you, Shirlee.
Safe and sound trips for all.

Dear Kathy. It’s cooled off here today thank goodness but says the heat will return during the week. It’s so lovely to feel a fresh breeze.Gwynant fledged at 10.33am today, flew to the camera pole to be near his mum and dad and take in the view but problems at the DOP their main computer has blown smell of burning and the live streaming is off, they are hoping to put a video up tonight only a pic of him so far.
Zoe was enjoying her walk after the storms she slept through it all!Had to laugh when she said temps were only 71F must be great for them though.Did you see that lovely story on Joey’s page about those stray dogs who have gone to live in a Veterans home,it seems they were not to be parted, some stories really have a happy ending.I heard Grumpy Cat has made a Christmas film!Have you seen her and her pals in the new friskies video for summer.I accessed it from Henri le chat noir’s page. How did your pups get on at the groomers?Have a blessed Sabbath.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
I’m so glad there’s been a break in the heat for you. So exciting about Gwynant fledging! Can’t wait to see the video! 71F must feel absolutely chilly to Zoe! She sure was enjoying being able to be out and walk about. Bless her. Loved the story about Fred and Ethel! I wonder if there is a Lucy and Desi, too! Look forward to Grumpy Cat’s Christmas film. Yes, I have seen her Friskies video. Very cute! My pups did fine at the groomers although they were pretty tired afterward. Found out that the holding cages at Petco are air conditioned, so that is a real plus. They’re all a lot more comfortable now without so much hair! Have a blessed Sabbath. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

Sheena. Noble Mission went down today to Lucky Lion, stablemate of Sea The Moon. Lucky was no match at all to Sea The Moon in the German Derby, but then no horse was. Back to the drawing board for Lady Cecil.

Dear Max:
You proved to be correct in suggesting NM race at home. Hopefully, he will bounce back from this and be successful next time. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Only common factor in these losses is that Mission left the UK and Ireland to run in Europe. Maybe Mission prefers places where they speak English? His bro never left England. The Euros came to him.

Dear Max.I tried to submit a message earlier about NM but no luck??I was scared of Lucky Lion because of his German Derby run.It has been suggested that NM could do with a rest now.It seems that STS’s offspring are all the rage for the Arc now. Also NM didn’t have the best of runs.Free the Moose!Niss4Senate.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Have not yet seen the race, but have read some commentary about it. Mentioned that his draw was not the best, and there was criticism of the ride. A second is no disgrace. It keeps Mission in oats, not that his owner needs the cash for groceries. Heard that Teddy Grimthorpe has said that Mission might go to Ireland next. Mission seems to like Ireland. After all, his dad lives there. Keep going is my motto.

Max,
I’m not Sheena but it looks like Noble Mission’s jockey was trying to encourage NM’s competitive drive by putting him right next to Lucky Lion so NM could clearly see/feel his rival and drive after him.
Often when horses are worked in company they work hard side by side to really make them dig down and push to get that head in front. It keeps them from getting distracted or unfocused.
Since NM wears blinkers this might be doubly important to put him next to the other horse to make sure he realizes he has a ‘threat’ for the lead.
Max
That was a rhetorical question. English commenters have a different take on this. In their opinion, two races have been lost by Mission because the jockey misjudged the pace.
Max
Z13Rulz. Appreciate your explanation which is very true and did not mean to sound abrupt. I totally agree with your name. Love that chestnut baby Z.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Z Fans:
Saratoga track currently listed as Muddy. Don’t know how Stanwyck will take to that if it doesn’t dry out. JV is on long shot Hot Stones in that one. Love and Hugs, JB
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.Poor NM he didn’t lose by much at all.If you want my opinion for what it’s worth,NM was a tired horse.I have seen many races like that when a horse can’t keep a straight line. They are not all Sea The Moon’s.Do you remember Sea Bird winning the Arc in 65′ he veered off a true course at the end.Would be better to stick to the UK and Ireland somehow cannot imagine Sir Henry would have sent him to Germany.Free the Moose.Niss4Senate Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Agree that not all horses are Whirlaway or Sea The Moon. STM is very quirky, but so is Mission. He wears that hood in his stall. Mission looked a little confused at the end and appeared to go that way because of the jockey. To win Mission needs to be on the lead from the start and run like a bat out of hell, such as Roberto against the Brigadier. Can you see Kinane or Piggott giving him a ride like that? It was Doyle who said that Mission was tired during the race after the last loss. Teddy Grimthorpe is already planning the next race. He may be calling the shots. Cecil seemed to have more control. Travel was not always on the cards, especially after Zenyatta beat Twice Over. He was against going to the US or Europe for Frankel. May have thought the same for his brother. Have to wait and see what is next for Mission.

Sheena. Take a look at this. Social Inclusion will run without lasix. Maybe Toast did not do so well at Belmont because he was on lasix for the first time and was not used to it?

Dear Max.You may, indeed, be right about Toast.I had never liked the idea of him using Lasix although I know most of the Euro trainers use it when they come over to the US.It could explain his lack-lustre performance and maybe he will use it again if he returns to Del Mar in august.Run like the Moose!!!Niss4Senate.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Any word on how Toast is doing?
Just saw the complete Grosser. Appears from that video that Mission did not get the best ride. Mission also does not look all that tired. Joyeuse has had the same results with that jockey. Only Moore and Queally have had success with her.
Waiting for the Haskell. It’s on the main NBC network. JudyB will let us know the results. Commentator said that Medal Count is the best looking horse. Big D would like that.

Fellow Cappers,
Geez I crapped out again……did an exacta of Untapable and Medal Count, two of the cappers from TV had the same thing……I couldn’t believe neither of them came in. I’m a disgrace to our team, did anyone pick it right?? hugs

Dear Max.No luck for the girls today.Pity.I haven’t heard anymore about Toast since he scoped dirty. They had no idea where he picked up the infection. They are hoping he will be fit to run at Del Mar.
John Gosden is very undecided as whether to run Kingman in the Sussex Stakes,he’s worried about the ground I think it does promise some rain in the Sussex area.George Scott tweeted they were all proud of NM called him their hero.
Nissy’s peep#1 was out after midnight in her nightgown looking for Sivvers and as I’m sure you know cats have very selective hearing!Free the Moose.Niss4Senate.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. George is right about Mission. If he had had Moore with him, things might have been different. If he runs with Doyle, Kingman may get the same results as Joyeuse, Mission and Al Kazeem.
Social Inclusion was still on edge today in the Haskell even without the lasix. Had me worried because he tossed his jockey and reared up in the gate. Brought back memory of that poor filly who had to be euthanized when she reared and hurt her spine. Think that it was at Newmarket? You’ll remember that. Scary. I’m getting to the point where I can hardly watch these races except on video.
Cats are unpredictable. Had one jump off a balcony into my path today while I was walking down the street at 6 am. Wasn’t Sivvers.

Sheena. Just read Nissy’s blog. This kind of thing happens here a lot, people out in their pjs on the street looking for escaped cats. Dogs live the charmed life so that they do not tend to wander. Once I was coming home late and one of my neighbors was putting out his garbage in his underwear. Guess that he thought that no one can see in the dark? Wrong. Forgot about headlights.

Dear Max.Where on earth were you going at 6am on a sunday morning?? July 28 Cherokee Devotional
Other people may tell us they know what is best for us. And maybe they do at times. But it is more important that we have time to know for ourselves what we are to do. The strength of other people tends to wane after awhile, so we need strength of our own to sustain us when no one else is around. Few stay prepared for any event. But we know to put our go hi yu di, our faith, where it helps us. When we get to those places of not knowing what to do, we shouldn’t do anything-not until we have had time to stand still-and see.
The earth and myself are of one mind.

Dear Kathy. It may sound selfish but I have always felt I know what is best for me!We had rain last night but it’s turned back humid again, some terrific storms in SE England this morning during rush hour.Fubu had a tornado warning and storms last night too plus he’s preparing for Christmas!!They spent 2 hrs in Petco the other night!
No luck with Gwynant’s video yet until the computer gets fixed one of their FB followers has posted a photo of him flying.Live streaming is sort of back on,can’t see in the nest though only a glimpse of their heads!Tremendous news of a Glaslyn female ,she is in Perthshire and has 3 chicks near to fledging.I pray one of Monty’s chicks will survive and return to the UK one day.
Did you see the video of that sweet little dog who got so excited when her owner returned home from Europe she fainted?such unconditional love.Dolly posted to let everyone know she is safe, they are advising all US and UK citizens to leave.Sometimes it is a case of better the devil you know!!Of course its Monday and Marty is not participating!Have a great week.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.

Dear Sheena,
We had a few drops of rain and our temps will be in the 90s today. So we’ll be nice and steamy! Thankfully we don’t have tornados here. Hope Fubu stays safe! That’s great he’s getting an early start on Christmas. Wonderful to see Gwynant flying! I did see the video of Casey fainting. 2 years without her mom is a long time! Good to know Dolly is safe. Marty is always smart to not participate on Mondays. He did a great imitation of a baked potato! Have a good day and a good week. Steve is off to Denver this morning. Back Wednesday.
