Second Annual Breeders’ Cup Zenyatta After-Party Celebration to
Offer More Excitement for Fans
Tickets for After-Party In Honor of Popular Racing Star Selling Quickly
ARCADIA, Calif. (October 25, 2012) – Team Zenyatta announced this week that race-goers staying for the second annual Breeders’ Cup Zenyatta After-Party Celebration on Championship Friday, Nov. 2, would be treated to more racing celebrity appearances, special live entertainment and the opportunity to bid on one-of-a-kind items during a live auction honoring “The Queen.” The After-Party Celebration will be at Santa Anita Park’s Frontrunner Lounge following the day’s race card.
This official Breeders’ Cup event quickly has come to be a popular and electric gathering and this year will offer appearances by Zenyatta’s trainer, John Shirreffs, racing manager and voice of the Zenyatta Diary, Dottie Ingordo-Shirreffs, and jockey Mike Smith. Additionally, a cavalcade of past and present popular jockeys will be attending the After-Party on behalf of the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), including John Velazquez, Ramon Dominquez, Joe Talamo and Javier Castellano, as well as Hall of Fame great Laffit Pincay.
“My jockey friends and I are looking forward to the After-Party, where we will highlight the critical work of the PDJF, toast the Breeders’ Cup and hang out with Zenyatta’s fans,” Smith said. “The After-Party is sure to be one of the most fun events of Breeders’ Cup weekend.”
In addition to the PDJF, the Breeders’ Cup Zenyatta After-Party Celebration also will benefit CANTER as well as other equine, children, and racing-related charities.
Zenyatta fans in attendance will also be treated to live entertainment by Liza G. and her “Zenyatta” song, and a silent auction with Zenyatta memorabilia and artwork will take place throughout the evening. A live auction will feature several premium items including a special artist proof of the “Zenyatta, Horse of our Lifetime” bronze by Nina Kaiser, the sculptor of the life-sized Zenyatta statue recently unveiled at Santa Anita, a canvas from acclaimed equine artist Jaime Corum featuring Zenyatta entitled “Breeders’ Cup Gold,” an original halter from Zenyatta’s foal, and a trip to see Zenyatta at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, KY.
The After-Party Celebration will be from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 2, allowing race-goers a relaxing environment to toast the day’s winners and gather to celebrate the past and present of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at the Frontrunner Lounge. Amenities include a California buffet, a cash bar featuring Z-cocktails, and race replays from Friday’s Breeders’ Cup program. Tickets are $50 for admission only, or $95 for admission combined with the buffet. A limited number of tickets are still available for sale at Zenyatta Shop.
As an added benefit for “The Queen’s” most loyal fans, reserved seating for the Breeders’ Cup Championship races in the specially designated Zenyatta Section is also available for $150 on Friday and $250 on Saturday. See Zenyatta Shop for sales and details.

Flight Carrying BC Horses Able to Leave NY
By Tom LaMarra, The Blood-Horse Updated: Monday, October 29, 2012 12:37 PM
A flight carrying a contingent of Breeders’ Cup horses from New York to California was rescheduled to 1 a.m. EDT Oct. 29 and was able to take off as Hurricane Sandy approached the Northeast, Breeders’ Cup officials said.
The Tex Sutton plane left the airport in Islip, N.Y., carrying horses trained by Christophe Clement, Shug McGaughey, Bill Mott, and others, Breeders’ Cup chief operating officer Bob Elliston said. The plane stopped in Louisville, Ky., to pick up more horses and was scheduled to land at the airport in Ontario, Calif., well before noon.
The Breeders’ Cup World Championships will be held Nov. 2-3 at Santa Anita Park.
Another plane carrying horses trained by Todd Pletcher is scheduled to leave New York Oct. 30, though it could be postponed to Oct. 31, Elliston said.
“It’s expected that, due to weather and the potential closing of bridges by the Port Authority of New York, the horses might not be able to get to the plane,” Elliston said.
Hurricane Sandy was battering the Mid-Atlantic region Oct. 29, particularly along the coasts of Delaware, New Jersey, and New York.
Breeders’ Cup has a rule requiring all horses to be on the grounds within 72 hours but will make an exception should several be delayed. Elliston said provisions will be made “to have all horses under surveillance no matter where they are” so they comply with the regulations before they arrive at Santa Anita.

Breeders’ Cup or Bust presented by Daily Racing Form: From Humble Beginnings in New Mexico
by Paulick Report Staff | 10.29.2012
With one victory at this week’s World Championships at Santa Anita Park in California, Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith will become the Breeders’ Cup’s all-time winningest rider. So as the Breeders’ Cup or Bust team ambled into New Mexico, it seemed appropriate to make a special stop to visit the small town where Smith began his dreams of greatness.
As Ray, Brad, and Scott continue their journey in support of Breeders’ Cup Charities, you won’t want to miss this enjoyable and touching look at how one of horse racing’s most well-known and successful riders got his start.

Keta:
Thanks for this wonderful video of “our guy, Mike”, and for all the updates on the BC horses that have arrived and will be arriving! We currently still have power, but it’s all about Sandy, on all channels! I was surprised horses go out late last nite, as all the airports in NY, NJ and Wash DC were cancelling all flights.
Lots of wind and rain falling now, it has now become one big waiting game!
To all who have sent good thoughts, kind words and prayers, “Thank You” hopefully Judy and I and the rest of the east coasters will be able to keep in touch.
Here’s hoping I don’t end up in OZ!

Dear Girl Saratoga and Z Family:
Wishing safety to you and all in this storm’s path and also to those traveling to the BC. Wanted to post now before we lose power, which seems likely.
Just called Angela and Papa is not too happy about being in his stall since yesterday afternoon, but Angela had to bring all 31 horse in and they’ll have to stay until it’s safe to go outside again.

Yes, Judy. They don’t like to stay in for long. But we know why they have to in this case.

Dear Barb W.:
Yes, Angela wasted no time yesterday getting them all in before dark. Charlie is especially enjoying the freedom he now has of being in the paddock every day. His life on the track was confinement to the stall, so he’s really enjoying his new life. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy B.,
Please do stay in touch as long as you can. Sincere wishes for your safety.
Hope things don’t get really awful. Thoughts and prayers for you, GirlSaratoga, and all who are in the path of Sandy.
Love and hugs!

dear judy left you a message on previous page hoping you will keep safe in this dreadful storm it’s on all our news channels over here God keep you and papa charlie safe hugs sheena
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
Thank you for your kind concern. Although over 100,000 homes in RI lost power, I did not. We were very lucky here in RI because we did not take a direct hit from the storm. There was flooding in the beach areas, which are about 45 minutes from me. Here we had rain and some pretty heavy wind gusts. There are small tree limbs scattered in the yard, but all of the trees around the house held up. I was concerned about some of the older oak trees coming down. One or two have lost some good sized branches in earlier wind storms.
I saw Angela and Papa Charlie yesterday and Angela was preparing to get all the horses in their stalls around 4:00 PM. She boards thirty of them not counting Papa and her daughters horse, Dakota. I spoke with her today and she said Charlie was sulking because he wanted to go outside in the paddock. He is so spoiled now. He has a routine that he loves and he’s usually in the paddock most of the day until Angela rides him and then puts him up for the night. He is so funny. He’ll be happy tomorrow. As long as there’s no time consuming clean up of tree limbs necessary, he should be able to go out in the paddock after breakfast.
Praying for all the people and animals that were directly in the path of the storm that did not fare as well as me. Love and Hugs, JB
Trina Nagele in SoCal
I’m so relieved to get your good news, Judy. Bless Angela for getting all the horses in early. I hope Papa Charlie is in better spirits tomorrow.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
SO glad to hear that your are OK Judy. Northeast Ohio has taken quite a blow as well – I am one of the lucky ones so far. Over 200,000 without power – lots of trees down as well as flooding and the rain is expected to continue through tomorrow. The ground is simply saturated, and many trees came down on that score alone.
sheena.davies(wales)
dear kathy does’nt black caviar look great on the cover of vogue she’s really made it now!! will have to get a copy dont know when it’ll be published over here hope the east coast Z family will keep safe during this dreadful storm I expect weather is lovely with you hugs sheenaX
Kathy R.
Dear Sheena: Those Nelly connections certainly know how to get the publicity! If she returns they will be lining up to beat her – no quarter given this time – I’ve said before she has nothing more to prove. Shouldn’t talk about the weather here in Canberra – it’s going to be partly cloudy and 25 (feel quite guilty with what is happening to our friends on the East Coast. Let’s just hope in the power of prayer. Hugs, KathyR.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Kathy and Sheena,
Nelly on Vogue, that really is something. Will that cover make it to the US?
Her owner’s really know how to work it, that is for sure. Agree with you,
Kathy R. She has nothing to prove especially after winning at Royal Ascot.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Each international edition of Vogue has its own content and its own editorial staff. So no, she won’t appear in the U.S. edition of Vogue. However, some big bookstores such as Barnes & Noble carry some international editions, so you may be able to find the Australian Vogue. You can always ask/call around and have them reserve you a copy.
Kathy R.
Dear Sheena, Sign and LauraJ: with a bit of luck I’ll be able to access it once Vogue comes out this Friday, and post it on the site! Have just heard that the filthy storm has made land – don’t they normally weaken when that happens, or the other front coming down from the north going to affect that? Anyway, keeping the prayers up down here. Hugs to all.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Thanks Laura J for that information. I thought that the magazines
must reflect the part of the world they are printed in.
Thanks so much Kathy for posting the link to the cover. I must say
Nelly looks great and seems to be enjoying her photo shoot
that model and clothing are lovely, too.
Would love it if you (Kathy R) could post a copy. Thanks so much
for offering.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Kathy R,
You are right the storms weaken when they hit land. I think the biggest
thing about this storm is the size, it is not a very rapid moving storm,
so it will collect more moisture in any form, rain or snow. And being up
north there may be more snow. The governors of the states have
been very proactive, but the people in New Jersey have lost power
until at least Wednesday.
Very sad to have to go through something like this, thoughts and prayers for all that Sandy moves swiftly and all power, water returns quickly and everyone has enough peanut butter.

The draw for this year’s Breeders’ Cup will occur in two segments: from 1:00pm to 2:30pm Pacific, the draw for all the non-Classic/Ladies’ Classic races will take place. From 3:30pm to 5:30pm, televised by HRTV, the draw for the Ladies’ Classic and Classic will occur. The Breeders’ Cup website (and the iPhone/iPad app) is expected to provide live streaming of the post position draw.
Once the post position draw is complete, you can find all the entries, morning line odds, results and payouts at the linked file below (via Google Drive). I won’t be updating this file until the draw is complete (no live updating). (NOTE: The Friday ML Odds are now out and updated.) I will be updating the file during Friday and Saturday at Santa Anita as the results come in..
2012 Breeders’ Cup Entries, Odds, Results & Payouts
I’ll have a live blog of all of today’s post position draw later on this afternoon, along with any pre-draw news.
We are still awaiting final word on the decision from Dullahan’s connections as to where he’ll run at the Breeders’ Cup. He is entered in both the Classic and the Turf.
UPDATE: It’s the Turf for Dullahan.
The Emerald Downs filly, Class Included, will bypass the Filly & Mare Sprint to enter the Ladies’ Classic.
Royal Delta, as expected, will enter the Ladies’ Classic.
Emcee to the Dirt Mile, not the Sprint. Hmmm.
Little Mike will go in the Turf. At a minimum, he’ll add some pace.

Seventeen Breeders’ Cup horses arrived at Santa Anita Park at 9:12 a.m. (PDT) Monday after a cross-country Tex Sutton flight that originated at Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, New York.
Greg Otteson of Tex Sutton said his company changed the starting point for the flight from Long Island to Newburgh, which is located north of New York City, and pushed its departure ahead by eight hours to 1 a.m. (EDT) to avoid the leading winds of Hurricane Sandy.
Trainer Bill Mott’s three Breeders’ Cup Classic candidates — Flat Out, Ron the Greek and To Honor and Serve — and defending Ladies’ Classic champion Royal Delta were on the flight. Royal Delta, who was under consideration for the Classic, will now stay within her own division.
Mott said that Royal Delta suffered a minor cut on a thigh while she was being loading onto the plane. He said it was a small laceration, three or four inches above her gaskin, which is between the stifle and the hock.
“She scraped herself boarding the plane and (the veterinarian) closed it up with some sutures,” Mott said. “It was a superficial wound.”
Mott said that the cut should not jeopardize the champion filly’s ability to compete Friday.
“From my standpoint and her standpoint, I don’t think it will be an issue,” he said. “It’s no different than a hockey player getting a little cut on his forehead and getting stitched up. They’re athletes.”
The other New York-based trainers with horses on the flight were Chad Brown, Shug McGaughey, Michael Hushion, Michael Trombetta and Diane Alvarado. The flight stopped in Louisville, Kentucky, to pick up horses trained by Tom Amoss and continued on to LA/Ontario Airport.
The horses traveled by van from LA/Ontario to Santa Anita Park.
The flight was originally scheduled to leave from McArthur Airport in Islip at 9 a.m., but was switched to the upstate airport as the hurricane moved up the East Coast.
“We just tried to get in there and beat the storm,” Otteson said. “Long Island, even as early as Sunday, was unacceptable to fly in and out of there.
“We usually use Islip Airport there and it only has one runway with one heading. So if you get any crosswind it shuts them down pretty much. Newburgh is a much bigger airport with different runway directions. We were able to get out of there.”
Otteson said the trip was uneventful.
The other horses who made the trip on Monday were:
Likely Turf favorite Point of Entry, trained by Shug McGaughey; Awesome Feather, Balance the Books, Corporate Jungle, Noble Tune, Watsdachances and Zagora from the Brown barn; the Mike Hushion-trained The Lumber Guy; Mike Trombetta’s pair of Next Question and Strike the Moon; Diane Alvarado’s Eldaafer); and the Amoss duo, Global Power and Sum of the Parts.
A final Tex Sutton Forwarding charter flight was tentatively scheduled for some time Tuesday with a full load of major contenders based in New York and Kentucky, but has reportedly been canceled and rescheduled for Wednesday.
Trainers with horses booked on this flight from New York include Todd Pletcher (Dreaming of Julia, Kauai Katie, Turbulent Descent, and Shanghai Bobby), Tom Albertrani (Brilliant Speed and Belle of the Hall), Kathy Ritvo (Mucho Macho Man), Tony Dutrow (Grace Hall) and Barclay Tagg (Jersey Town) from New York. The flight will then stop in Louisville to pick up Wise Dan for trainer Charles Lopresti and Fort Larned for trainer Ian Wilkes before proceeding on to Los Angeles.
The undefeated Shanghai Bobby, a top contender in the Juvenile, tweeted the news about his flight status.
“My flight out tomorrow’s been canceled,” the colt’s Twitter account said. “I’ll fly out Wednesday instead. We’ve battened down the hatches. We’re safe.”
Albertrani, whose Brilliant Speed is scheduled to run in the Classic while Belle of the Hall is pointing to the Filly & Mare Sprint, was keeping a close eye on the weather in New York.
“We’re keeping our fingers crossed and obviously monitoring this storm,” Albertrani said.
Wind gusts early Monday at Belmont Park were around 45 mph as Hurricane Sandy continued to make its way up the eastern seaboard.
In other Breeders’ Cup news:
Janis Whitham’s Fort Larned walked at Churchill Downs Monday morning, a day after working five furlongs in a bullet 1:00 2/5 under exercise rider Kate Merritt.
“I changed it up a bit and just walked today,” said Wilkes, who usually takes his horses back to the track a day after a work. “Most likely he’ll train tomorrow before he leaves, but I am not sure about the plane situation because of the weather in New York.”
Morton Fink’s Wise Dan, the top U.S. candidate for Saturday’s Mile, galloped on the training track at Keeneland Monday morning.
Wise Dan, who will be on the same flight as Fort Larned, is likewise in a holding pattern about his travel schedule.
“I could just keep training him here at Keeneland, but I want to get him out there and get him on the turf one time to look around and school in the paddock,” said Lopresti, who initially was going to fly to California Monday.
An early morning phone call to Ballydoyle confirmed that all of the Aidan O’Brien Breeders’ Cup entries were on schedule for a 9 p.m. arrival at Los Angeles International airport Monday.
Foremost amongst them is Breeders’ Cup Turf defending champion, St Nicholas Abbey, who will again have Joseph O’Brien, the trainer’s son, in the saddle. Also in the team is leading Breeders’ Cup Mile hope Excelebration, who will be hoping to continue his winning streak having recently won the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.
The rest of the shipment consists of Fame and Glory (Marathon), George Vancouver and Lines of Battle (Juvenile Turf), Infanta Branca (Juvenile Fillies Turf), Treasure Beach (Turf), Up (Filly & Mare Turf) and Starspangledbanner, who rounded off his preparation for the Turf Sprint with a fourth place in a stakes at Dundalk on Friday.

FYI
WHAT IS TACTICAL SPEED ? SOMETHING I HAVE BEEN WONDERING ABOUT.
HERE IS THE ANSWER :
I’m always looking for new issues to address and so when I came across this question on a message board. I thought it would be a good subject to talk about. As many horseplayers know speed is very important in races. The pace of the race can often determine who is the winner. So it is a very important factor in handicapping. Horses often have different running styles, they can be broken down into several categories.
First you have your true front runners, these are horses that want to be in front. They have great natural speed and want to be on the lead, these horses are sometimes hard to rate for jockeys. This front end style is sometimes referred to as the “Bill Daly”. This is in reference to an old trainer who used to instruct jockey to always take the early lead.
Next comes your stalkers, a stalker is basically a horse that can rate just off the leaders. This is one of the most dangerous running styles. Horses that are stalkers generally sit just off the pace and are usually in perfect striking position turning for home. It is my opinion that horses who have this type of running style usually finish in the money the most.
The last category would be closers, a true closer is a horse that is void of early speed. They sometimes almost seem to lose touch with the field early, often trailing the race by dozens of lengths. Some of these horses are talented enough to unleash big late rally’s. These types of horses are usually most effective in route and grass races. This is probably the most exciting running style of the bunch. Because when these horses win it is sometimes from “out of the clouds”.
Then there are horses that can fall into several of these categories. A horse that can show good early speed if the pace is slow or be taken back if the pace is hot. These types of horses have an advantage in most peoples minds. As they have a versatile running style, they are not set in their ways. Basically what they have is good tactical speed. I think that many jockeys prefer riding horses with tactical speed, as it makes the job of winning a bit easier to accomplish. So the next time you hear a jockey or trainer in an interview say “My horse has good tactical speed”, you will now understand what they are talking about.

Sign: thanks for that interesting piece – have wondered what was meant by that expression. No worries regarding the Vogue cover – it should be available on the Friday, but will check and see, and get it out to you as soon as I can. Thanks also for the answer on the storm as it moves inland. Heard on the news here that the winds are already causing problems in Canada – just want the filthy thing to clear out as soon as possible. Cheers!
