Second Annual Breeders’ Cup Zenyatta After-Party Celebration to
Offer More Excitement for Fans
Tickets for After-Party In Honor of Popular Racing Star Selling Quickly
ARCADIA, Calif. (October 25, 2012) – Team Zenyatta announced this week that race-goers staying for the second annual Breeders’ Cup Zenyatta After-Party Celebration on Championship Friday, Nov. 2, would be treated to more racing celebrity appearances, special live entertainment and the opportunity to bid on one-of-a-kind items during a live auction honoring “The Queen.” The After-Party Celebration will be at Santa Anita Park’s Frontrunner Lounge following the day’s race card.
This official Breeders’ Cup event quickly has come to be a popular and electric gathering and this year will offer appearances by Zenyatta’s trainer, John Shirreffs, racing manager and voice of the Zenyatta Diary, Dottie Ingordo-Shirreffs, and jockey Mike Smith. Additionally, a cavalcade of past and present popular jockeys will be attending the After-Party on behalf of the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), including John Velazquez, Ramon Dominquez, Joe Talamo and Javier Castellano, as well as Hall of Fame great Laffit Pincay.
“My jockey friends and I are looking forward to the After-Party, where we will highlight the critical work of the PDJF, toast the Breeders’ Cup and hang out with Zenyatta’s fans,” Smith said. “The After-Party is sure to be one of the most fun events of Breeders’ Cup weekend.”
In addition to the PDJF, the Breeders’ Cup Zenyatta After-Party Celebration also will benefit CANTER as well as other equine, children, and racing-related charities.
Zenyatta fans in attendance will also be treated to live entertainment by Liza G. and her “Zenyatta” song, and a silent auction with Zenyatta memorabilia and artwork will take place throughout the evening. A live auction will feature several premium items including a special artist proof of the “Zenyatta, Horse of our Lifetime” bronze by Nina Kaiser, the sculptor of the life-sized Zenyatta statue recently unveiled at Santa Anita, a canvas from acclaimed equine artist Jaime Corum featuring Zenyatta entitled “Breeders’ Cup Gold,” an original halter from Zenyatta’s foal, and a trip to see Zenyatta at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, KY.
The After-Party Celebration will be from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 2, allowing race-goers a relaxing environment to toast the day’s winners and gather to celebrate the past and present of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at the Frontrunner Lounge. Amenities include a California buffet, a cash bar featuring Z-cocktails, and race replays from Friday’s Breeders’ Cup program. Tickets are $50 for admission only, or $95 for admission combined with the buffet. A limited number of tickets are still available for sale at Zenyatta Shop.
As an added benefit for “The Queen’s” most loyal fans, reserved seating for the Breeders’ Cup Championship races in the specially designated Zenyatta Section is also available for $150 on Friday and $250 on Saturday. See Zenyatta Shop for sales and details.

In April of 1956, the champion Doubledogdare won the prep for the Kentucky Oaks (now called the Eight Belles.) She came back a week later to miss the lilies by a nose, but would account for the Falls City Handicap later that fall for Claiborne Farm. Today at Churchill Downs, the elegant, but simple gold silks could be seen finishing first in another stakes races, as the very impressive juvenile filly, Sign rolled to victory in the Pocahontas Stakes. In between the two fillies, the history rich farm has collected 27 other stakes wins at the Louisville oval.

UPDATE ON HURRICANE SANDY !!!
Hurricane Sandy update: Forecast stands pat, storm draws near

Jersey Shore photos Sunday as Hurricane Sandy approaches gallery (25 photos)
By this time tomorrow, a tri-state area meteorologist’s nightmare is likely to be unfolding in New Jersey.
Hurricane Sandy’s projected course has not changed in the last 24 hours and it is expected to make landfall as a category 1 hurricane along New Jersey coast Monday night, making an unparalleled impact across the state.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Steven DiMartino, a meteorologist and owner of Freehold-based NY NJ PA Weather. “I don’t know what else to say. Duck and cover.”
As of 5 p.m. Sandy was churning northeast through the Atlantic Ocean, about 500 miles southeast of the New Jersey coast. Overnight, Sandy is forecast to turn back toward the coast, expand and intensify and ride a beeline into the New Jersey coast , packing winds of at least 75 miles per hour.
Sustained winds along the New Jersey shore are already above 30 miles per hour in some places, and gusting to nearly 45.
Anxiety over the storm has reached a fever pitch across New Jersey.
Store shelves are bare. Thousands of coastal residents are fleeing inland. NJ Transit is shutting down all public transportation as the state prepares to ride out what could potentially be the most devastating storm in history.
“It’s all the ingredients to be a record breaking storm” said David Robinson, the state climatologist at Rutgers University. “I can’t recall seeing the anxiety levels among the professionals (meteorologists), and increasingly the public, higher — and frankly it is deservedly so.”
STAY CONNECTED DURING THE STORM Download our free NJ.com mobile and tablet apps to keep up with the latest storm coverage and other New Jersey news.
Forecasters say it is likely Sandy will produce conditions not ever experienced in the Garden State.
Wind gusts over 75 miles per hour for more than a day could bring down countless trees and knock out power to millions. Rivers could overflow their banks and flash flooding will be widespread. Along the coast, a 10-14 foot wall of water with 10 to 15 foot waves crashing over it could inundate communities from Cape May to New York City.
“This is a really bad forecast,” said Phillip Orton, a research scientist at Steven Institute of technology who studies storm surge. “Because we don’t really know what will happen if the water gets that high.”
The storm surge could break records along the coast, in feet, not inches.
“We’re looking at potentially breaking the record high water mark at Sandy Hook by one or perhaps two feet. That’s huge,” said Gary Szatkowski, the meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service in Mount Holly. “Usually if we break a record, we do it by one or two tenths of an inch.”
Along the boardwalk at Atlantic City, which was ordered to be evacuated by 4 p.m. today, the streets are quiet, the billboards dark. Much like many places around the state, residents were headed to shelters to ride out the storm.
Atlantic City evacuates as Hurricane Sandy approaches New Jersey
With Hurricane Sandy expected to make landfall on Monday night, residents of Atlantic City prepare their homes for the worse. While most have left or are planning to leave, some are reluctant to abandon their homes. The Atlantic City Convention Center served as a staging area for mandatory evacuations. Hundreds of residents were bused to the Center and will be taken to shelters inland to ride out the storm. (Video by Andre Malok / The Star-Ledger)
Watch video
Jersey Shore folks put Hurricane Sandy bluntly: “We’re screwed.”
On Sunday morning, 36 hours before Hurricane Sandy is predicted to make landfall in New Jersey, the effects are already being felt. Water is building up in the bays. The ocean beaches are being hammered by high surf. And even the old salts who have seen storms come and go are fearing the worst.
Watch video
In a city where thousands of people living in public housing and don’t have their own transportation, such evacuation must be handled by the government. At noon, hundreds of residents arrived at the Atlantic City Convention Center, some walking blocks and blocks with a little luggage in tow.
From there, the city is bussing residents to shelters across the state, said Tom Foley, the director of emergency management.
Among those waiting for a ride was Jane Bentley, 69, who sat with her 14-year-old grandson Jamel. they live on New Jersey Avenue, in the Inlet. It always floods, she said, and this storm has her worried.
“Of course” I’m scared, she said. “The older I get, it’s more scary, You don’t know what it’s going to be like – the fear of the unknown.”
Star-Ledger staff writer Ryan Hutchins contributed to this report.

Those honored will be Narrow Escape, the first Old Friends’ retiree, plus Calder Hall of Famer Flying Pigeon, multiple grade I winners Proper Reality and Ruhlmann, Argentine-bred Gold Spring, graded stakes winner Stage Colony, Beulah Park runner AppyGoLucky, and Invigorate, who was owned at one time by Old Friends founder and president, Michael Blowen.

Ah ha!
There are 2 Invigorates–a mare who I’ve been chasing.
And, a gelding born 1992.
So, the second ran on tracks like Suffolk Downs & Beulah Park.
No videos found for him.
Just goes to show–a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
So, enjoy the race videos–they are on Invigorate–just not your Invigorate.

Dear Keta and Peggy N.:
There are five horses listed on Pedigree Query by the name Invigorate. Three are geldings, one of which is Peggy’s. He was once owned by Michael Blowen and last raced at Suffolk Downs in 2000. There are no photos or videos of him that I can find as yet. The other two Invigorates listed are fillies.
I guess because Peggy’s Invigorate did not run at premier tracks, there are no records of him. I even tried to find his race replays, but they don’t have them on Equibase that far back in the archives. I trying to find at least a photo of him on Old Friends Blogs that go back to the early 2000’s. Will keep trying. Hugs, JB

Judy, Thank you so much for what your doing. I just would so like for everyone to see him. Just to keep his memory alive a little more.

Invigorate 1992-2009
Invigorate passed away this week. Apparently he decided it was time and lay down, surrounded by his buddies, on a fine fall day in Kentucky. He was only 17. Viggie was Michael’s racehorse and there was a special bond between the two of them. I suspect that Diane is even more devastated by Viggie’s loss.
Invigorate was another example of the everyday side of racing. He wasn’t a particularly stunning horse, just a chestnut gelding with 69 starts and a little under $100,000 in earnings. He wasn’t fancily bred, although fairly close up in his pedigree you could find Grey Dawn, Damascus and the great mare Mahmoud. But he ran in the money 41 times in his 69 starts—an example of consistency, soundness, and grit.
Viggie loved attention, carrots, and his pasture mates, not necessarily in that order. When I first started visiting Old Friends, and later when I became a regular, Viggie lived in a large paddock at what was then the back part of the farm. His buddies were Kudos, Remmington, Riva Way, Bingo and Easy Ellis. I can’t tell you how many times that gang of geldings refused to come over for visitors, studiously ignoring us as if to say, “Please. We are grazing here, no time for greeting guests.” I often saw them all lay down for naps, as if they were preschoolers on rest time. And yet, I also can’t tell you how many times I heard the echoing thunder of hooves well before I saw them gallop up the field to the fence, looking for treats. Viggie was a carrot hound, no doubt, and he thought nothing of threatening, biting, kicking or jostling his buddies for prime treat position.
A couple of months ago I was at the farm on a day when the blacksmith was there to trim feet. Now living in a different paddock, back in the “new” part of the farm, Viggie and his cohorts decided that having their feet trimmed was not on the agenda that day. The geldings ran, bucked, kicked, and otherwise made everyone’s life difficult. I’m not sure if Invigorate ever had his feet done that day. But throughout it all, there was no doubt he was having a very large time.
We have lots of retired horses at Old Friends. They are all different and they all have unique personalities. But I can tell you that no horse, not one, ever enjoyed his retirement more than Invigorate. He had everything he wanted—grain to munch, grass to graze, buddies for romping. Lucky him.

Thank you so much for this tribute. I hadn’t seen it. When I saw him for the first time there was just a presense about him. Just loved him. Understand fully why Michael and Diane loved him so. So he was 17, he sure didn’t look it to me. It seems like he did pass peacefully and I am so glad ot that. I have some pictures of him and will cherish them always. Just believe he’s with God now and I pray so hard we get to see all our beloved horses one day.

Great detective work. This article from Old Friends Blogs was just what I was hoping to find. Thank you. Invigorate reminds me very much of my Papa Charlie, in that they both raced at Suffolk Downs and are both Chestnuts. Also, V seems to have had a wonderful, kind temperament and couldn’t get enough carrots just like Papa. Hugs, JB

Pati- gradually losing sleep over BC!!!!!
It’s cold and it’s windy. Really windy, it almost sounds like it’s howling. A few broken tree branches already, but nothing huge yet. No rain, just a lot of wind. Good thing my grandparents left New York City a few days ago. They have an apartment in Brooklyn, and I don’t know if I would’ve been able to sleep at night knowing that they were still home. But they left a few days ago, and are safely on their way to Arizona. But, I heard my grandmother this morning calling to people in her building and making arrangements for them to check in on her home. It’s going to be a lot of water, and I am expecting New York, and most of the East Coast, to just disappear for a few days. Literally, of course, as everyone will always remain in our hearts and minds.

Breeders’ Cup: Royal Delta opts for Ladies’ Classic
By Jay Privman DRF 10/29/2012 9:28AM
ARCADIA, Calif. – Royal Delta, as expected, will be entered Monday in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, trainer Bill Mott said Monday morning from Belmont Park.
Royal Delta won the Ladies’ Classic last year at Churchill Downs. She had been cross-entered in the Classic, but Mott always had said the Ladies’ Classic was the target, and neither he nor owner Benjamin Leon changed their mind at the last second.
The Ladies’ Classic is Friday, the Classic Saturday, both at Santa Anita.
Mott’s horses – Royal Delta, plus Classic runners Flat Out, Ron the Greek, and To Honor and Serve – were on a flight from the East Coast that left in the middle of the night and was scheduled to arrive Monday morning in California following a stop in Kentucky.
Mott was not sure when he would be able to travel because of Hurricane Sandy.
“We’re just trying to get there,” Mott said.

The 3-year-old daughter of Empire Maker has never run on the lawn, but is undefeated in three trips over synthetic surfaces including her last outing, a victory in the Oct. 7 Spinster Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland for trainer Todd Pletcher. She was pre-entered for both events.

Nathaniel Retired, to be Syndicated
By Blood-Horse Staff
Updated: Monday, October 29, 2012 11:03 AM
Nathaniel, emphatic winner of last year’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Eng-I) and this year’s Eclipse Stakes (Eng-I), has been retired and is to be syndicated at stud.
A son of leading international sire Galileo out of the Silver Hawk mare Magnificient Style, Nathaniel retires to stud as the winner of two of Europe’s best races and more than $2.3 million in purse earnings. He will stand at Newsells Park Stud.

Hurricane Sandy
Today and the next few days are going to be so difficult.
This storm is huge-meaning many family and friends are in harm’s way.
Part of the aftermath will be blizzard conditions in the higher elevations of the Carolinas to Kentucky.
Prayers for all!
And, prayers for all God’s creatures who are going throught this!
