Happy February!
Last fall we held our fourth annual Zenyatta Celebration, raising $20,000 for Thoroughbred Rehab Center Inc. Five participants were chosen in a random drawing to win the grand prize, An Invitation to Meet Zenyatta. Each winner was invited to travel with a guest to Lane’s End Farm to meet Zenyatta and receive a tour of the farm. These photos document their visits. Photography by Alys Emson.
View the complete set of photos from these visits in our 2016 Zenyatta Celebration Photo Gallery.
Some of you have noticed that we’ve been posting less frequently, but our winter break is no cause for concern. Zenyatta is happy and healthy, and we got to see her at Lane’s End in late January. We’ll be posting images from our visit soon.
Enjoy!

A young Indian boy named Slow was so brave in battle when he was fourteen that he was renamed Sitting Bull. He had a great love for birds and imitated their songs-finally writing songs of his own and chanting them. How many of us have been called slow? If not in one category, then in another. The change comes when we study something we love, doing what comes so naturally that we succeed in an area that was totally unexpected. Never underestimate the power of small beginnings. Sufficiency in all things more often than not begins in small ways. Little ideas and tiny steps evolve into greater accomplishment. Someone said it takes twenty years to become an overnight success, but it only takes seconds to recognize the beginning of one.
Let us look forward to the pleasing landscape of the future.

Dear Kathy.I have been known to be very slow baby steps I say.Sad news about Thistlecrack’s injury he is out of the Gold Cup and Oliver had wanted him to win in memory of Clouds His owners had been so kind to him that day.It seems Charismatic did not have the peaceful end we all thought with a fractured pelvis.Hopefully it was quick and he didn’t suffer too much.
Mother Theresa went to the House of Lords yesterday to listen to the debate she sat on the steps by the throne!Larry has made a government statement”Ask not what your cat can do for you but what you can do for your cat”Remind you of some speech a long time ago. the ratties had a great celebration yesterday doughnuts for everyone Sprout is such a clever little dog.Loved the video of his tricks.Felix’s book out in 2 days!Richard Dunwoody the champion jumps jockey before AP. is taking part in a 2000 mile challenge in Japan in aid of Sarcoma UK his nephew suffers from the cancer.AP is joining him part of the way.He will be doing a marathon each day.I will always remember Dessie coming into the TV studio when Richard was on “This is your Life”Sad to hear about David Cassidy suffering from dementia. It makes one think when it happens to someone our age.The Dyfi said many Ospreys will already be on their way but Monty and Glesni are always april arrivers.Open next week. It’s still mild and dampish here I had to turn one of the heaters off yesterday.Have a great day.Love and hugs to you.Kisses for Angel Holly,Kisses for AngelHolly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.XOXOXO

Dear Sheena,
Poor Thistlecrack. I hope he will recover completely. So sad to hear that Charismatic’s pelvis fractured. Amen, in the hope it was quick without too much suffering. Mother Theresa’s schedule remains really hectic. Sounds like Larry is channeling JFK! RE the ratties, yes, I read about a wall made of doughnuts. It was determined that it would be better if the doughnuts were handed out at the border so as not to wast doughnuts. Good thinking! I love looking at the My Pom Pals videos. Mouse certainly messes with poor Sprout a LOT. I know Felix’s book will be wonderful. Richard Dunwoody is to be commended. Sad to hear of his nephew’s battle with that horrible disease. Very sorry to hear of David Cassidy’s dementia. Yes, it really makes you think when someone your age is stricken! The ospreys are on their way. I sure loved the post on your page of the osprey in flight. BEAUTIFUL! It’s always a good sign when you can turn off a heater. Happy Tuesday. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Angel Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXO

On this day in 1967 a bay colt was born at E.P Taylor’s Windfield’s farm in Canada.Out of mare called Flaming Page he resembled his mum rather than his sire the famous Northern Dancer. He was bought by Charles Engelhard and named by his wife Jane .Trained by Vincent O’Brien he became out last Triple Crown winner in 1970.He never ended his career with a win getting beaten in the Arc and Champion Stakes. He retired to stud at Claibourne and become leading broodmare sire in North America as well as leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland. He was euthanised on april 15th 1992 after suffering from laminitis for several years. We will always remember those heady days of 1970 and wait….RIP beautiful boyX
Max
Canada is huge. Windfields was in Oshawa, Ontario, 30 minutes from Toronto. Flaming Page by the way thanked the Dancer with a kick to the chest. She was like her name.
sheena.davies(wales)
I do know Canada is huge compared to my little Island I have been used to sm all all my life Nijinsky was quite difficult when he arrived at Ballydoyle a change of diet.I just can’t believe where all the years have gone.
Judy B from Rhode Island
Dear Sheena and Max:
Sheena, thanks for remember the great Nijinsky. Happy Birthday Champ.
Max, I always get a chuckle out of the interesting tid bits you post on the different personalities of our beloved horses. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
Nijinsky wanted to eat only Canadian oats. He refused to eat what was offered in Ireland. When they flew some Canadian oats over, he then immediately changed his mind and switched to the local variety. He also trained on his own timetable, not O’Brien’s. He is the sire of the ill fated Ferdinand. He may still be only only horse to have a KD and Epsom Derby winner in the same year.
Judy B from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Oh, Nijinsky sounds quite a character.
Yes, I had forgotten that he was beautiful Ferdinand’s sire. Breaks my heart when I think of him. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy:I am waiting patiently for news about Hovis. There are some lovely comments about Charismatic on FB.Some thought it might have been an old injury.People and animals live and die and it is not for us to question why or when.He will be buried at Old Friends. The favourites are falling by the wayside for Cheltenham.Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT Cap Hercules Frank Bentley and all the sweeties.Love and hugs SheenaX

Dear Sheena:
Please let us know how Hovis is doing when you get an update. Hard to know if Charismatic injured his pelvis somehow earlier at stud. Run free in God’s Heaven beautiful boy. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap, Herc, Frank, Bentley and all the Sweeties

Judy,
On some sites people are questioning the care that Charismatic was given at Old Friends. That is such a shame. They are loving devoted people who always put the horses first. Michael is heartbroken over the loss of Charismatic and I am sure in his heart thinking that perhaps something more could have been done. These wonderful creatures are not built like oxen and things do happen. I am just happy that this great champion came home to Kentucky and that the winter was mild and he had some good outdoor time being a horse.
Max
Well said.
Judy B from Rhode Island
Dear Shirlee:
Those people should read the heartfelt words of Vivien on Old Friends site. I believe they were thrilled to have him and that he was very well loved.
So sad that he didn’t have a chance to grow old there.
Only God knows when and how his pelvis was weakened leading to collapse and hemorrhage. Could have been the start of a problem there for some time; gone undetected. Run Free beautiful boy. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy and Marshall. So happy for GunRunners big win. He’s such a beautiful boy and so proud of him. So devastated with all with Charismatic’s loss. So hard to even talk .
One thing yesterday that I was so proud to hear. So keeping my fingers crossed that Epicharis Grandson of Sunday Silence does get to come over from Japan for the Derby.
It still hurts my heart so bad that Sunday was sold to Japan and never got to come home.
My heart will always be broken about Sunday.
Wouldn’t mind at all if Epicharis does get to come and win and get some revenge for Grandpa. One Day……..Love Sunday Silence dearly
Peggy (N) South Georgia
There is a picture of Sunday Silence, on google with the Sentence after it. The Star No one Wanted. Just breaks my heart to read that. Such tears. You Are Wanted Sunday and Loved Forever. Run Free in heaven. Hope to see you one day.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Peggy,
Yes Sunday, you are loved indeed and always remembered.
You were the one they let get away because they were blind to your greatness.
The Star is now in the heavens at home with the angels.
Hugs and Love

Dear Peggy and Marshall:
Sunday sure showed the doubters they were wrong about his potential as a sire. He is the Foundation Sire for the success of Japan racing. Can you imagine what his youngsters might have accomplished in the US.
Run free together in God’s Heaven Charismatic and Sunday. We love you, always. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Peggy, Marshall and Z Fans:
Gorgeous photo of Sunday Silence. He was as close to a True Black TB as we’ve had I think. Imagine what a beautiful foal might have been if he and Z had had a date. Love and Hugs, JB

My goodness! ICharismatic and Sunday Silence were favorites of mine.
They may be gone, but certainly aren’t forgotten. From time to time its still possible to see Charismatic’s courageous run in the Belmont and Sunday’s run against Easy Goer in the Preakness. (Now that was a race to remember!) May all creatures sleep beautifully tonight.
shirleeinindy
Martha,
Alydar and Easy Goer were my favorites of all time. No matter how many times I watch videos of Affirmed and Alydar, my beloved Alydar never wins. Easy Goer did a bit better against Sunday Silence. So sad that both Alydar and “The Goer” died young. Saw Easy Goer at Claiborne and he was beautiful and very well mannered. Had Secretariat’s paddock at the time. Two wonderful red horses!

We are persons with a desire for variety. Rigid routine can make our spirits sag. Following the same path at the same time every day, repeating and repeating without the slightest change, dulls the spirit. Life gets to be routine because we let our minds fall into a rut that has no future. Nagging fear enters when living falls into inertia, and we are troubled not so much by what is going on around us as what is going on inside. There are many words for spirit, but the Cherokees call it a da nv to, or life, v le ni to nv. It means to show some initiative, some serious intention. It is not something we only hope to have one day. It is a necessity-moisture that feeds the roots and sunlight that draws new life. But it must be stirred up.
Warriors stir up themselves to go to battle-and so must we.

Hi there everyone.
Like all of you, I was gutted to learn about Charismatic. As I understand it, the post from the vets who stated that only an “act of God” could have saved him was released because of “abuse on social media” that Old Friends had received. I believe it was Vivien who posted this. I was stunned. But it seems to be taking many a very long time to learn that social media can be very dangerous for all the wonderful possibilities it has given us.
When I’m feeling gutted, I either paint or write. And I take my Daisy for long walks. But losing Charismatic wasn’t conducive to painting.
A few weeks back, Charlotte Farmer who located and exhumed Noor’s remains and moved him to burial at Old Friends contacted me to tell me the story of Ohio’s Glacial Princess, of whom I had never heard. Charlotte asked me to consider writing something about her for THE VAULT. This was before the small flurry of press release’s about her being moved from her burial site at Beulah Park, which is now closed & under development, to be buried at Old Friends.
She was an absolutely amazing filly and as I learned more about her, I was just so glad. She is one of those great thoroughbreds who mostly ran locally, in the state where she was born, and so — in being in the 1980’s — she is pretty much unbeknown to many of us today, excepting those from Ohio, where she is revered. She represents all those thoroughbreds who pump everything they’ve got into the sport but are marginalized because they run at small tracks, don’t necessarily have fashionable bloodlines and so forth.
So here’s the article and includes very rare footage and photos of Glacial Princess. I hope that you enjoy it!

Dear Abigail,
Another wonderful article — thank you so much! I had read the Bloodhorse article from January 19, 2017. So glad that Ryan Brady cared enough to look for GP’s remains and have them moved to Old Friends to rest in peace, safe from the bulldozers. Glad that her headstone will be at Old Friends so she will be remembered. I do hope the park that the developers plan on the site of the old track will do justice to the beautiful Glacial Princess.
Thanks again Abigail! Simply the best.

Dear Kathy..I just love my routine and this morning everything went out the window,We had a power cut!Now I am having my morning cup of tea.Cold breakfast ,cold chicken for lunch.Seems there was a fault in a street near me.No PMQ’s either.I had a newsletter from the Brooke recently and they helpthe women to care for their donkeys They have to travel 20 miles to fetch water! So what do we have to complain about? And they were all smiling and happy.Makes you thinkhow cosseted we are in the western world these days.I had no idea Ferdinand was Nijinsky’s son.I read Abigail’s article on the Vault about him last night. It was a shame he had ringworm but they all said his best race was the Arc which he narrowly lost. His whole body was buried at Claibourne.
News of Hovis he has to travel to Qakham for a bone scan and Karen is asking if anyone can help with a trailer a lot have put suggestions up.I hope it is nothing serious.
Djakadam is all the rage for the Gold cup now.He has been 2nd twice and has a 3 month break.I loved the photos of Dolly and Harry for Valentine’s day.I am glad you are still friendly with your Canadian neighbours I like the new ambassador.About all I have had time to visit today.Have a great day.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Angel Holly,Nikko and Sugar.SheenaXOXOManthlet is on one of these silly Juice fasts and she is craving chips!

Dear Sheena,
How horrible to lose your power! That always ruins you day, not to mention all the perishables in the fridge. Wow! 20 miles to fetch water is crazy! I doubt I would be smiling! Interesting the facts that came out in Abigail’s article. Still worrying about Hovis. I pray all goes well for him. Karen must be a wreck! Best of luck to Djakadam. I, too, loved the photos of Dolly and Harry. Manthlet is too funny. I would be craving chips, too! Have a great Hump Day. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Angel Holly, Nikko and Sugar. More news from Karen As you can imagine she is a very upset mum.She knows she will never make it as a vet.The X-ray was inconclusive and Herman suspects a fracture. He will have to be in isolation for a few days after a radioactive bone scan.Oh,bless Hovis will be home alone! Then there will be 8 weeks box rest.Karen feels a little better today.Prayers for Hovis and that he will heal quickly.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Hovis,
Power up, dear boy! Best wishes for a complete recovery — please behave yourself, Hovis, and do as you are told. Maybe when you are well after the “confinement”, you will be ready for, dare I say it, “poncing” about? Healing thoughts and prayers for our Hovis and for Karen, too.

You’ve got company. I never forget those comments about Our Conor.
On another topic, the chestnut club has another winner in Limini. She won at Punchestown. Mullins thought that he had given her a big ask, but she answered with a very nice win. No whip either from shorty.
Judy B from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
She’s very well bred on both sides. Impressive record listed on Pedigree Query: 12 starts; 7 wins, 2 places and 2 shows. Don’t know if that’s up to date; this might have been her 8th win. Love and Hugs, JB
sheena.davies(wales)
I missed Limini’s win and she beat Apple’s Jade too.A nice one for Mullins. Our Conor could have turned out to be a superstar.I have never cared for our hurdles in the UK they are pretty dangerous.I prefer the Irish and French versions.
Judy B from Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
Prayers for Hovis. After the rightly negative reaction from horse lovers, don’t think Shorty will ever make comments like that again. Surprising he showed no compassion at that time.
Goodnight. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap, Herc, Frank, Bentley and all the Sweeties

Dear Judy and Marshall, The pictures I have seen of Epicharis, he bears such a striking resemblance to Sunday. I love so many of the 3 year olds coming along this year but I think seeing him at Churchill Downs would just be something to behold. He is undefeated and I know they are talking about going to Dubai with him. I am worried weather they would send him here or not. And, we all know the Japanese penchant for the Arc so I will hold out hope I can see him run some this year. Somewhere…. I saw a beautiful head shot of him. So beautiful. Sure he makes Sunday proud.
Judy B from Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
OMG, Epicharis is absolutely stunning; you are right, so like his daddy.
Here’s a gorgeous photo of him and an article from TDN stating he has secured a berth in the Derby if they choose to compete. I posted the photo in a larger scale too.

Does anyone know when Zenyatta’s baby is due?
Martha Fosdick
Perhaps someone out there can answer this question. From what I could find out, it seems that Ziconic, Gormley, and Pancake ( another horse owned by the Mosses) all worked out a day ago or so. There was no mention of Cozmic One. Hm. Has anybody heard anything?
13ZRulz
No.
With any luck he’s recovering from “brain surgery” and we’ll get to follow him into a new career in another discipline.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear 13ZRulz, Please tell us more on Coz if you know anything. We love him dearly. I got to read him my little birthday love letter card to him a few years back. I told him I’ld always have him in my prayers. Still so today. Hoping so hard he’s ok.

A winner carries with him the quiet knowledge that he has heard every argument, faced every opposition, felt every criticism, but there is no turning back and no accepting defeat. Rejection is one of the oldest forms of torture. If a dozen people approve of us and one does not, out thought is riveted on the one and what his reason is for not liking us. But time and circumstances change so swiftly. Nothing stays the same. What was real and possible is suddenly out of reach or we find amazing success where we have failed a dozen times. If we give up, we forfeit everything. Look beyond rejection, see beyond limits, think around the bend in the road. It may be that we have been trying to settle for less than the best-and we have been doing it for a long time.
The path of glory is rough and many gloomy hours obscure it. May the Great Spirit shed light on yours.

Dear Kathy,
Loved the last 2 devotionals – just read them both today. This was my favorite part ~
” Look beyond rejection, see beyond limits, think around the bend in the road. It may be that we have been trying to settle for less than the best – and we have been doing it for a long time.”
Whenever I’ve gotten ‘caught’ by the doldrums or by too much on my plate, I’ve fallen into that trap. I try to remember to do something to get me out of it ~ push myself away from my desk or easel. Go for a hike or go outside and sit for a bit in the sunshine and watch the birds at the feeders or the animals coming in for their drinks of water and ‘munchies’. Sometimes just hearing the quiet sounds of nature calms me and resets my compass. It reminds me of how much I love how God has created such an amazing world. We just forget to go out and look for it sometimes.
Hope you and everyone here in Zenyatta Land have a wonderful day today.
PS – forgot to say – sometimes, I have to skip ‘the news’ of the world for a day – the news media tends to wallow in the negative news (not that it’s not important, but we can’t solve the world’s problems – we can pray about them and trust God is in charge. Even then, I sometimes say to Him “wish I knew what You are up to!” I know He doesn’t mind, but He hopes we don’t ‘lose heart’). with love, Elizabeth
Kathy
Dear Elizabeth,
Thank you for those inspirational words! I totally agree. Nature is so very calming without fail, God really speaks to us through creation. Have a beautiful day.

Dear Kathy.Such a thought provoking devotional today. As for rejection being the oldest form of torture my mum always gave dad the silent treatment whenever they argued and he hated it!!!Well we have a lot of weather in the UK today Snow in Scotland floods in Cumbria and 80mph gales in west wales.A lady has been killed in Wolverhampton struck by falling debris.I had to go shopping and for the first time I felt I’d be lifted off my feet.It was pretty scary.Thank goodness the rain came over night and there are by-elections in Copeland and Stoke Larry said you would have to be a wally to go out and vote in this weather.Felix’s big day they have to cancel a competition because they are dealing with Storm Doris. They were going to put the new cameras at the Dyfi today not a good idea!
Hovis is demanding carrots and get well cards according to Karen they found transport and he will be all packed and ready to go on sunday.Karen is overwhelmed by the goodwill messages on his FB.At least after the scan they will know what they are dealing with.
Looks like politics will be the order of the day at the Oscars this year.We had the Brits last night and that pathetic Katy Perry had 2 puppets of the Donald and Mother Theresa as if we care what she thinks!!!As for Little Mix getting the best single of the year!
Viktor travelled to the South of France this week to deliver Bella the puppy he had his brother with him and Mario who owns the White House. The new sanctuary with Alaa has been called Ernesto’s paradise.I heard on one of our FB’s that Pour Moi has become an NH stallion now.He was a son of Montjeu and also won the Derby. Some are not keen on the idea.I have shared a lovely video of CC on my timeline.Like Elizabeth I often what God is up to.We hear such sad stories some days.Hope you have a lovely day.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Angel Holly Nikko and Sugar.Sheena XOXOXO
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Yes, the “silent treatment” makes people crazy! Sounds like bad weather all around in the British Isles. Too bad you had to go out in that crazy weather. Stay safe! I see you received your Felix book. Enjoy reading it! The Dyfi will have to wait for calm weather to put the cameras up. So great to see that people are rallying around Hovis. I pray for the best for him and a complete recovery. Yes, you know there will be many political speeches at the Oscars. Geez…what was Katy thinking?!! Viktor and Ernesto are to be commended for carrying on their very important work on behalf of animals. That’s too bad that some are not keen on Pour Moi becoming an NH stallion. It’s not up to them though…Will definitely look for your CC video. You have a lovely day as well. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Angel Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXOXOXO
