Thanks for sharing, BGG. IHA looks wonderful and is having a great time. Love the path he has worn along the fence line and the sound of his grazing is indeed a beautiful sound. Still cannot believe Doug O’Neill allowed me to hold IHA’s lead after he returned to HP following his Triple Crown campaign.

Dear Bluegrass Girl,
Thank you for sharing this video of IHA. Does anyone know if Japan’s seasons are at the same time as ours? That grass looked too green for Fall and it seemed soft and wet when he ran. I was thinking Spring while watching the video.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
They are the same. Japan is in the Northern Hemisphere. Hokkaido, where the big farms are, is far enough north and cold enough to have hosted a Winter Olympics. Weather in the Tokyo area is like Washington, DC. It’s warm and humid in the summer but can get cold enough to snow in the winter.

Speightstown’s fee boosted to $80,000 for 2014
By DRF Breeding Staff Daily Racing Form 11/05/2013 4:19PM
WinStar Farm released its 2014 stallion roster and fees on Tuesday, with the Versailles, Ky., farm’s 23-stallion roster led by Distorted Humor and Speightstown.
Stalwart sire Distorted Humor will again stand for $100,000, leading WinStar’s roster. Meanwhile, the farm has boosted Speightstown’s 2014 fee from $60,000 to $80,000. The latter, a 15-year-old Gone West horse and champion sprinter in 2004, is represented by 21 Northern Hemisphere stakes winners to date in 2013, led by Group 1 winner Reynaldothewizard and Grade 1 winner Dance to Bristol. He is currently ranked second on the North American general sire earnings list.
Three other WinStar stallions will stand for increased fees in 2014: Artie Schiller (from $10,000 to $15,000); Colonel John (from $15,000 to $17,500); and Pioneerof the Nile (from $15,000 to $20,000). Artie Schiller currently ranks sixth on the juvenile sire list, while Pioneerof the Nile and Colonel John rank second and third, respectively, on the freshman sire list.

There is an impressive list of stallions-the above is only part of the article.
Some fees went up-some went down.

Dear Max
Did you see where Wise Dan’s half sister was in the ring today. But she did not meet her reserve price. She was a beauty too.
Max
Peggy. Just read about her. She’s 2 years older than Wise Dan. Morton Fink must have originally sold her to Adena. When he keeps a horse, they usually have Dan or Lisa in their names. She’s going back to Adena, which is a good place.

So much good news — Our favorite Mike doing so well — he is just the best –and winning the Shoemaker award for 2 in a row, Gary Stevens proving that he’s better than ever — and now learning that the gorgeous Ebby will stay with John and team. I’m SO happy!!!!
Best to all.

I’m thrilled that Ebby is not only staying in the U.S., but she’ll still get to train with John! He must be so happy. After someone from Japan bought Awesome Maria I was so scared for Ebby. And she’ll be right outside of Lexington too, at least for a little while. I’ll have to see if I can visit her. Any Dumplingz want to join me?
@Marty R – Congratulations on your good news from the doctor! What fantastic news.
I had such a great weekend at the BC. I got to see a lot of my Dumpling friends I met last year and I finally got to meet the GP himself Terry Crow! I missed my dear friends Darlene, Diana, Brenda and Barbara, but I’m hoping I’ll get to see them next year. The weather was fantastic and, with the exception of the race on Saturday when Johnny V got hurt, the races were great. I was disappointed Royal Delta didn’t win, but she went out a champ. On Saturday my three favorites, Groupie Doll, Wise Dan and Mucho Macho Man, won. I even won a little money. I got to visit Barn 55 on Sunday, which I’d always dreamed of, and I even got to feed carrots to Lava Man! What a thrill. He’s such a ham. I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. Not only did I see so many fabulous horses, but more importantly I got to hang out with my very special, cherished Dumpling friends.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Debbie G.
I was thinking that Awesome Maria would be OK. She was bought by Mr. Magnier of Coolmore. I did hear he bought her for clients. It has given me a bit of worry now. Did you hear who those clients were.
I believe he is from Ireland and Coolmore is such a large operation. I do hope she stays here or in Europe.
Terry Crow
Debbie-The pleasure was mine, You are a most charming and friendly young woman and I love your Kentucky accent.
Anne from Paramount
Just heard about Ebby!!!! What great news!!! Smiles all around!! (Right, Zenyatta?)
Otherwise, had a great time with our fellow Dumplings over the weekend. You all know who you are so I won’t mention names, mostly beCoz I would forget someone. The one exception is our own Terry Crow. Terry, it was great to see you again! I have scanned the last few pages and will now read in some detail. Yes, it was tiring as was stated, but worth it. We get there very early for workouts (still dark on DST), for a variety of reasons. Works out well, but we are really wiped out by nightfall. Saturday we brought in our folding chairs which was even better. And yes, I also enjoyed our trip down memory lane, meandering down those hallowed grounds of Hollywood Park on Sunday. Big SIGH.
Again, wonderful to see–and hang out- (as Debbie G said)– with everyone. Looking forward to next year. Zenny, are your ears burning? We sure talked about you a LOT!! :-) Cheers to you for bringing us all together.
Terry Crow
Ann-It was great seeing you again. You haven’t changed a bit. I would recognize you anywhere. No wonder Gary Stevens calls you honey.
Anne from Paramount
Everyone, hope we have not turned a page here, but thought you would like to know that our Auntie Judy’s Letter to Editor to Blood Horse Mag has been published!!! Oct 26th issue, page 13. If I missed a previous post on this, I apologize, but I just now opened the magazine and flipped to the COMMENTS page. Hoof Ray— JAG :-) It’s in reference to Judy the Beauty (who gave Groupie Doll a run for her money this past weekend.)
shirleeinindy
Did not realize who it was who wrote the letter. Did not know it was our “Auntie Judy.” Still had the issue so went back and read it. Nice.
Anne from Paramount
Vicki from near Hollywood Park, just read your posts on page 5–great descriptions of the events, thanks. Nice to meet you and then walk with you at HP. We are close, geographically speaking. I am so happy that you got to feed the great Lava Man. Hope to see you at this last Hollywood Park meet.
BTW, does anyone else think that Kristen C was screeching “The Best is Yet to Come”? I was worried about the horses. I doubt that they all had cotton in their ears ala our QUEEN. Gary Stevens made mention later that it did not seem to bother MMM, so that tells me he might have had a concern, also.
Terry Crow
Screeching is right. Surely she didn’t get paid for this.
Janet Newman
She is very nice lady I am sure, as well as talented, but I did not care for the way she sang.
shirleeinindy
Thank goodness I chose the moment she sang to hit the loo before the race and missed it. I wish they would put a little more thought in to who performs at these things. Thank goodness they do a traditional Call to the Post. We don’t need flourishes, tweets etc. GLad I also missed the guitar rendition.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks, Anne, I enjoyed meeting you too, and will go to Hollywood Park during this final run, not yet sure when, I will check the schedule. It’s now or never, in spite of the campaigns to save it, I don’t think we’ll win that fight.
I like Kristin Chenoweth, but it did seem maybe “too much”. I thought perhaps she was loud, in order to try to compete with a lot of the crowd racket. Anyway, the performance had its problems.
Terry Crow
Vicki-You and Janet Newman put it nicer than I did and should have. Yes, I am sure she is a nice young woman but her performance left something to be desired.
Sue Fl CPRC
Do we have a visit winner?
sue and tony
I guess it wasn’t us.
Sue FLCPRC
Guess Not :(
Marilyn Morgan
Anyone know who the auction winners were and, most importantly, Zenyatta’s visit winner?
shirleeinindy
If any of y’all live near Gulfstream, Muchie is parading there on Saturday.
Terry Crow
shirlee-Your allegiance to MMM is remarkable. You are entitled to bask in his reflected glory as you were on his bandwagon from day one. I climbed on much later, but I am proud to share the ride.

November 6 Cherokee Devotional
We all handle hundreds of decisions every day-dress or pants, cereal or pancakes, coffee or tea, this project or that, shopping or banking, park here or there, and so on. If we really knew how many decisions and details we attend to each day, we’d be overwhelmed. Sometimes we’re overwhelmed even without knowing the exact number! But few decisions are more important than this one: what words we use with those around us. Even on our busiest day, we can find time to say, “Great job”, “What a lovely dress!”, “Thank you!”, and most important of all, “I love you!” Remember to keep life and love at the top of the list of decisions you have to make each day. You’ll be happier, and others will be too.
Is not kindness more powerful than arrogance; and truth more powerful than the sword?
-Chief Luther Standing Bear, Lakota
Terry Crow
Kathy-These are indeed words of wisdom, both yours and Chief Luther Standing Bear. Thanks for posting.

I thought I was on the brink of “catching up” here when I saw the Celebration page with another 200+ comments and had to fold. WiFi was non-existent at Santa Anita unless you were in the Clubhouse area so couldn’t keep up with the goings on here, but I did manage to buy my sticker before time ran out on Sunday. Thanks so much to Team Z for all of their celebration efforts. It is awesome that the trip to see Zenny is a drawing this time so that all of us have a chance. That sure would be the dream of a lifetime. Had a great time at the BC but missed all of my Dumplings friends who were holding the fort here.
A few random comments (and I know that I will forget something or someone, but please know that it wasn’t intentional):
Debbie G, Trina, and I missed our dear friends and last year’s roomies Darlene Daniels, Diana Stuart, and Brenda S, and of course Barbara and Jug Wood, but we were glad to have an opportunity to spend more time with Sue Noel and Vicki B. It was also great to renew many friendships and to meet some people we missed last year like the Kennedys, Cynthia Holt, and Terry Crow (!!!) who went to great lengths to get to Santa Anita for at least a little while on Friday. All super nice people, and I wish all of the rest of you could have shared this experience with us. My photos are on my camera (not a smart phone) so I hope that there will be a way to share them down the road.
As nice as it was to see many peeps from the Blog, not having a place to gather (other than at the Zenny statue in the VERY hot sun) resulted in missing out on others who were there. I’ve seen posts from several people it would have been fun to meet, but it was like ships passing in the night even for those of us who had our “Dumpling Tags” on. Wish we could figure out a better way for “next time.”
Attended a fund-raising event for TROTT, an organization that retrains thoroughbreds for new lives after the track, which was very fun. Got to hear some of the trainers and ex-jocks tell stories from the past and see some fabulous auction items. They had a “photo booth” (like you used to find at carnivals and amusement parks), and Mike Smith was nice enough to pose with several of us – a unique souvenir to say the least.
Sheena, the British horses were terrific at the BC. Should have gone with my instincts to bet on Dank (who won); DID bet on The Fugue (who almost won), and also on Declaration of War to place and saw him get beat out of that by a whisker!!
I’ll let Sue Noel tell her own story, but I think she should get an award for making it from Sun Valley Idaho to dinner in Arcadia using no less than 5 different modes of transportation!
Being at the BC is great for the ambience, but not quite so good for actually seeing the races (at least from seats in my price range). Looking forward to viewing my DVR recordings to see the races in more detail. The “good news” side of that is that we did not see Secret Compass go down nor did I know that any other horses had been eased up until I read some of the comments here. Very hard to get your mind around the danger that constantly lurks for both horses and jockeys.
Heartfelt thanks to EVERYONE (you know who you are ♥♥♥♥) who contributed to an amazing week in California and especially to Trina for way too many kindnesses to enumerate.
Thanks as always to Sheena via Max for last week’s Hovis installment. His “hubba hubba” routine is just too funny. I vaguely heard that he and Auntie Becky did well in the “stressage” event, but haven’t had time to read the details. I had heard that there was a lady Clydesdale, Sally, in training to be a track pony at Santa Anita, and on view to the public. I was hoping to get a picture to send to Hovis (I think she’s his type :-) but never actually saw her.
Terry Crow
Sandy-My big regret is not having much time to spend with all of you lovely ladies on Friday. It was a real pleasure meeting you. Hope to do it again soon.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Hi Sandy, I’m glad you got your sticker in time on Sunday, and apparently had a good trip home. Nice to read your “take” on the whole event too, we all have different angles. It will be interesting to see what Sue Noel writes, as she hasn’t gone home yet. I’m still thinking and reminiscing about the whole thing.
Anne from Paramount
Hi Sandy, enjoyed your comments! So good to see you again. I was wondering about that Clydesdale (whom we did see, as we were sitting so close to the rail), so now you’ve cleared that up. Thanks! Now I MUST get ready for work. Happy Wednesday everyone, especially to Zenyatta and her team!
shirleeinindy
So sorry to see the 3 year olds retired to stud. Namely Orb and Oxbow. Guess it is better for them to retire than to have an unhappy event in a race. Just makes you appreciate MMM, GOD, Fort Larned, Mr. Zayat who brought Paynter back and all the others who stay at the track. Of course, being a gelding The Dude doesn’t have much else to do! Think they plan to race Palace Malice next year.
Terry Crow
shirlee-Agree with your comments. In the old days horses, geldings or not, raced for longer periods. You really got to know them before they retired. Now, if a horse campaigns past his three year old year it is remarkable. Hope MMM returns to the track next year. The sport of racing is no longer the sport of racing but, rather, the sport of breeding.

Dear Sandy So glad you enjoyed your trip to the BC. I was so proud of our Euro Horses ,was gutted for the Fugue though!!!Very happy Hovis has found love again, I got the first book Karen wrote last week and found out all about Fit Mare and at last got to see his famous mum.So glad to find out he did well in his stressage test, the book is hilarious.Good to have you back!hugs Sheena.

Should have stayed in California. He has huge fan base here and the weather, overall, is better than it is in Florida. No tropical storms. Guess I am being selfish. Wish nothing but the best for MMM and his connections.

I live in West Palm Beach and we have beautiful weather here in the winter. Tropical storms won’t be a problem. He’ll enjoy it. I look forward to his parading at Gulfstream Park. I know he’ll be missed in CA but don’t worry he’ll be loved just as much here in FLA. :)))

@Vamp Sue Colvin–Bill Shoemaker died about 10 years ago due to unknown causes. It was always described as he died in his sleep. He trained horses both before and after his auto accident that left him a paraplegic and was about a 12% trainer. He told me once when I was a little boy that he only weighed about two pounds when he was born and a sportswriter once said that if he were six feet tall and weighed 200 pounds that he would have been considered the greatest athlete of all time. Maybe so, but for my money he was the greatest jockey of all time bar none and I will never forget him. @Sue Noel–It was a pleasure speaking to you on the phone while you were here for BC. Looking forward to meeting you in person.
Randy
Terry, I’m so envious of your childhood… sounds like a horse lover’s dream!
Terry Crow
Randy-I was able to interact with a lot of people without being self conscious because I didn’t really know who they were. In that regard, it was fun. BUT–being a child then means I am an old man now.
Randy
Nooo… not old! If you are old then I am too and I don’t consider myself such. From what you’ve shared here from time to time, you do have many wonderful memories and met a lot of fascinating people.
I still think you should write a book.
Terry Crow
Randy-You are most kind. However, I do not think I could sit long enough at one time to write such a book. If I ever do, I would have to commit about five years to it. The inherent problems with that are probably obvious. It is enough for me to be able to pass along these stories to people such as yourself. As long as I can share my experiences, my friends and family who are long gone will stay alive to me.
Randy
Then I’m so glad to be here to benefit from all your wonderful stories and memories!
