Hard-Luck Horse Wins Breeders’ Cup Classic by a Nostril
By JOE DRAPE The New York Times Published: November 2, 2013
ARCADIA, Calif. — This is how championship races should be run — with fury and beauty and with the horses carrying not only jockeys on their backs, but hopes and dreams and stories. As Mucho Macho Man, Declaration of War and Will Take Charge pounded down the stretch of North America’s richest race, the people who had taken them here gritted teeth, pounded their programs and willed their horses to the finish line.

Thanks BGG. You know I have been reading every word I can find on Muchie. My worst fear now is that they will sell him out of the country. If they do, how many of you guys will join me in crime and go with me to get him?
Ann NC
Count me in, Shirlee, lol!
Terry Crow
I have been reading that the owners are considering racing him next year. If I owner him, I sure would as long as he is sound. Racing horses is the fun part. The breeding shed can always wait.

Well-written account of the race. I still believe that this story would make a fine movie. Perhaps it could be a dual story about both MMM and Gary Stevens, much like Seabiscuit was about the horse and his connections. I would be in line to see it.

So would I, Terry. So would I!

Dear Max, Sheena, Ann, Peggy, Sally B, Marshall and Z Fans:
Visited the farm for the first time today since moving. Angela had already filled the feed buckets for the evening meal, but I was able to lead some of the horses, including Charlie, from the paddock to their stalls. It was so much fun. I have included some photos I took today. One of Charlie is just so precious. He is bowing for his Stud Muffin Treat. He goes into the bow when he smells the Stud Muffins, even before Angela gives him the command. Too cute. There are also photos of Bentley, a beautiful Buckskin; Willow, a gorgeous Gray, Dakota, a beautiful Paint and gorgeous Hudson. Love and Hugs, JB

Just thought of something else I wanted to tell all of you. There is a good chance that we have found the right person for Hudson. The young woman rode Hudson again today and they seem to be getting along just fine. Sadly, this young lady recently lost her horse to old age and the best part is, she is already a boarder at Angela’s so Hudson will be able to stay right here on the farm. Dear Shirlee:
Thank you, but I feel blessed to be able to be around them. Will always be grateful that I found Angela and that she adopted Charlie.
In my wildest dreams, I never believed I would be lucky enough to find him a forever home right here is Rhode Island. The original agreement was, when I brought Charlie from the track to Angela’s, he would be there temporarily until a permanent home could be found. He walked off the van like the gentle giant that he is and Angela told me she was adopting him right then and there. I had a bill of sale in my name as Charlie’s owner for about a week and then he was officially adopted by Angela. Thanks to her I can visit the horses often. I’m looking forward to helping with feeding time, maybe grooming and being more hands on. I have a lot to learn. Love and Hugs, JB

Judy, Judy, Please be careful with your back when you start tending to the horses.
Perhaps we are around the same age and feeding does not bother my neck and low back, grooming is a bit bothersome to my neck, but the bending to clean out stalls and pick up horsey poop is no longer too good for my back. I have been doing it but then run to the chiropractor! hah
I am tickled for you to be working with them more personally! Please send a couple more pics of Charlie so I can see his stature and his face more.

Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Hi all: The only problem I have with thoroughbred horse racing is seeing a beautiful young horse’s life cut short because of injury. I was so happy to contribute by paying for a Z sticker, not only because the love for Z , but if it can help a charitable org. give those unsuccessful thoroughbreds another vocation and save their life, I am all for it! Where do those that can not perform wind up? Is every owner willing to contribute to a good life for the horses they have raced, when they don’t become winners bringing home the big bucks? That is a problem I see. I realize this is a business, but what happens to all the horses that are born and they do not appear to have what it will takes?
Otherwise it is the most thrilling sport of all to watch magnificient power and beauty doing what they were born to do….run. I just have mixed emotions sometimes.

AP – Sports Sunday Nov. 3 2013
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Mike Smith won his second straight Bill Shoemaker award as the top jockey of the Breeders’ Cup.
He won the Marathon and Juvenile Turf on Friday and the Turf Sprint on Saturday, extending his record for most Cup wins by a jockey to 20. Smith also had second-, third- and fourth-place finishes in the two-day world championships at Santa Anita.
The 48-year-old rider won with 37 points, four more than 50-year-old Gary Stevens, based on a scoring system that awards points for first through fourth place finishes in the 14 Cup races.

Judy-I may have mentioned this before but, when my mother was an owner of race horses, her trainer’s barn was right next to where Rex Ellsworth had his horses. Shoe was the main rider for Ellsworth and spent a lot of time with Swaps, who went on to win the Kentucky Derby. Whenever she went to visit her horses, and I was with her, Shoe was around the area. He took time to talk with a young boy and explain things to me. He and Don Pierce were especially nice to me and I will never forget him. A first class man as well as a first class rider. I am glad that I didn’t know then what I know now about Rex Ellsworth.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
Yes, you did mention that you met Shoe; I remember now, I looked up Ellsworth on Google and I couldn’t believe what I found. Thank God Ellsworth’s horses had a jockey that treated them right. Can’t say the same for him. Hugs, JB

I don’t know if this has been posted before, but I had not seen it. In a PDF (Ann Marie linked on FB) about the Eric Kronfeld dispersal, Don Robinson’s comments about Ebby’s at Belmont in July, with the gate trouble: “She should have been scratched, said Robinson. She broke a tooth and was bleeding out of the mouth. What happened was she got in the gate and, like Zenyatta, didn’t love it in there. She was fine, however, until the filly in the stall next to her acted up. She got fractious, and the starter grabbed her ear, I think, and with that family, you don’t ever do that. So she went straight up in the gate, nearly 17 hands, and nearly pitched over backward. She was cut up a little bit, but thank God she didn’t suffer any serious injuries.”

Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Judy, you are welcome. I kept wondering what happened to Ebby in that gate, with people saying maybe she doesn’t like to race. Seems not true now, finally good to hear the story.
I had a great time at the BC yesterday, with Sandy from Ohio, Debbie G., Trina Nagele and Sue Noel, they are all wonderful gals. With their encouragement, I did some “fantasy” betting at first, and although I “lost” repeatedly, and was glad I spent no money, I finally made a few bets. I had only ever bet one time before, on Zenny’s last race. Well, I won a place on Juvenile “Havana” (netting me a few cents), then in the #11 Mile, I put $2 on Wise Dan and Za Approval, on “a feeling”, and thought I was probably throwing it away, how could I possibly know who would win 1st and 2nd? Then I was shocked when I won that Exacta, which paid $33+ change — not bad! The other gals won a little too, on that race. Sandy had tipped me about Za Approval, and I remembered Wise Dan from last year.
Today a group of 9 of us got to go to Barn 55 at Hollywood Park. Those above, plus Karen G., JAG, Anne from Paramount, and Terry (King, I think). Steve Willard talked to us a long time, and showed us around, I saw horses, horses, and more horses. We saw Zenny’s/Ebby’s empty stall, the framed photos in John’s office. We met Michelle and had some pictures taken with her (hopefully someone will post online). We met Carmen, who talked about how hard it has been with Mario gone in New York with John — but she’s very emotional because Mario comes home tomorrow, finally, and they have a lot to talk about, it’s been hard on their family. Finally, we went down to Barn 63 (I think – we walked forever) and fed carrots to Lava Man. I finally can say I fed carrot chunks to a horse — Lava Man. He could not get enough.
There were a few others with us at dinner last night, but I did not know all their names, friends of some of the others, who may post about it themselves. But Anne’s husband Rod was one of them. Some got Laffit Pincay’s autograph yesterday. Pictures were taken with Zenny’s statue. I couldn’t go Friday, so I didn’t get to meet Terry Crow.
There were people in outlandish (it seemed) finery, highest heels, fascinators and all, there was a lot to see, a lot of money in the wind. I forget who all everybody met or talked to. One gal was telling how she accidentally met someone last year who mentioned MMM, and she said “That’s my horse!” (as a fan), and the reply was, “Well, actually that’s MY horse,” it was the owner(s)! And she recognized her again this year, and how exciting he won now, I had to agree.
I was glad I just had a short drive home, to then take a nap. Most others had longer drives, or flights home tomorrow. We all seem to be tired, but happy, and hope to do it again, in spite of the misfortunes we talked about with Johnny V. & Secret Compass, and the shooting at LAX. I also thought about Barbara Wood, but glad she wasn’t here, with all that happened.
Terry Crow
Vicki-I am sorry that I missed meeting you as Friday was the only day I could attend, and then not for long. Glad you had a good time. It is hard not to with that bunch. It was great seeing some of my old friends, including The Kennedys, Trina, Anne from Paramount, Linda from New Jersey and JAG, along with new friends Sandy and Debbie. I was also able to speak with Sue Noel via telephone, but didn’t get to meet her face to face. Next time I hope.

Vicki B, What a memorable wonderful time you spent with everyone and most of all, being at the Breeders Cup and visiting Barn 55! I’d be tired too! (a good tired)
On Z’s 16th race I was so confident she would win at Oaklawn, but I put $4.00 on her just to show I believed in her. Z won and my bet would not have earned anything so I just kept my ticket as a memory.
Thank you for sharing your time!

Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Sally and Max, Terry and Judy, thanks and you’re all welcome! I will be thinking about it all for a long time to come, remembering and smiling.
The races at the BC are a bit crazy, because everybody in front stands up to see & yell, so you have to stand too, yet the horses go by so fast, then you’re watching the finish on a big screen, because the angle down the track is no good for the finish line, even in “good” seats. You really have to pay attention to the colors and numbers. The sound system is loud, but garbled to hear what’s going on — the sound is much better at home. What you get at the track is everybody’s excitement, that you don’t get at home, and all the people-watching. But for seeing horses, the paddock walk remains my favorite part.
And I would have paid for that tour of the barn at HP — yet it was free! The smell of the horses. The calico barn cat sleeping under the tree on the famous lawn where Zenny grazed, in front of the barn. I picked a souvenir bit of clover and brought it home in my pocket. And seeing all the winners circle photos in John’s office, and the poker-playing horses painting on the wall outside his door, with the winning horses names, and a tiny painting on the wall IN that painting, of men running on a track.
Terry Crow
Vicki-Glad you had such a good time. Still hard to believe that HP is going away.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Hi Vicki,
So glad that you enjoyed the adventure with us. You saw more at HP than I did!!! How did I miss Carmen and John’s office???? Your description of the noise and the poor views of the finish line were really “on target” but it is certainly an experience of a lifetime, and I was glad you were there to share it.

Thanks, Sandy — I was equally glad to be there with you, Debbie, Sue, and Trina. I’m still thinking about, remembering, and smiling at things – like Trina’s “bucket”. For those not there, ask Trina to tell the story.

BGG-Thanks for posting this. I had not been able to see Wise Dan’s race as I was otherwise occupied during that time. Did see the classic, though. After seeing Wise Dan’s spectacular win despite trouble, there is not doubt in my mind that he is horse of the year. Sure hope he returns to the races next year. Bob Baffert tried to manage Game On Dude’s races this year but a second straight flop in the BCC sunk him in my mind.
Ann NC
What a classic it was. Loved seeing that big ole white blaze putting the thrill in thrilling! MMM, Will Take Charge, and Declaration ended the day perfectly.
Max
Ann. Will Take Charge is a horse to watch. Dec is going to stud at Coolmore Ireland. Not sure about 3M. Was some spec after BCC that he might race again next year. That would be just great.
Terry Crow
ann-No other BCC comes close to the 2009 race but this one was extremely satisfying in a lot of ways.

November 4 Cherokee Devotional
Wait for wisdom, wait for patience. Never let a microwave mentality take over your life. Wait for the right time. Remember, the things you want will come to you if you wait.
John Burroughs once made an interesting comment about waiting. He said we should be patient but that we should also “hustle” while we wait. What does that mean? It means be prepared, have things in order, tie up loose ends, and get rid of negative thoughts. So waiting doesn’t necessarily mean sitting around doing nothing. It means preparing ourselves-in body, mind, and spirit-even if we don’t know what we’re preparing for.
If you are willing to wait for as long as it takes, then your wait will not be long.
The man who sat on the ground in his tipi meditating on life and its meaning, accepting the kinship of all creatures, and acknowledging unity with the universe of things, was infusing into his being the true essence of civilization.

Dear Kathy Lovely post. Yet another bear!!!Hope you had a great weekend and all your furbabies. If only we had the SA weather at Royal Ascot!Enjoy your day hugs Sheena
Kathy
Hi Sheena! Yes, we had great weather over the weekend, I hear you about the bears. Nature figures very prominently in Native American names. I think that’s very cool. Hugs to you and hello from Holly, Sugar and Nikko.

With apologies to Kathy, who posts such inspiring words and thoughts involving Native Americans, here is a good news-bad news joke involving Indians. The chief called the tribe together for sort of a “state of the tribe” discussion. The chief told all assembled that he had some good news and some bad news and which one would they like to hear first? The majority opinion was that they wanted to hear the bad news first. “Okay.” said the chief. “Braves have had a bad winter hunting and there is nothing to eat but buffalo dung.” After much grousing from the crowd, something then asked “What is the good news?” “We have plenty of buffalo dung,” said the chief.
Kathy
No apologies necessary, Terry. That was funny!
Terry Crow
Thanks, Kathy. That means a lot coming from you. I hesitated to post this joke because I did not want to interfere with the reverent tone that had been set regarding Native Americans. But, in the end, I couldn’t resist it.

The trainer I used to work for has been honored by UCDavis. Here’s the link. I’m so happy that she’s finally getting accolades for all the help she’s done in education and research for the University and for horses.
Her Ranch: “Victory Rose,” is the only one in Calif to donate so much. Back in the day, her stallion, Qui Native was in-fertile and donated him to the re-productive part of the school. To study fertility. Also, every breeding and foaling season, there were always hands on from the students. I admired her for that.
So, Ellen Jackson, I applaud you for a job well done and I’m sure every student that passed through the Ranch, Thanks you and so do the Horses!

Wise Dan,
So hope you are home and will be enjoying some good time off. Tell your brothers and your sister we will miss you all so much. Hope mom Lisa is well. Is she in Foal again??????We can all hope. Love Ya
Dear Max, Still sure wish they would breed her to Wiseman’s Ferry again. Will be hoping.
Max
Peggy. Not certain to whom Lisa Danielle has been bred this year, but here is a nice article which explains why Dan is the Champ. Check out the power of the Wolf and Dan’s ties to Big Red.

Peggy. Did some checking. Lisa Danielle is in foal to More Than Ready.

Dear Max and Peggy:
Max, thanks for this article on WD and the info on his Dam, Lisa Danielle. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. She’s amazing. Her foals are winners. Think that Wise Dan is the only chestnut like his mother, but there is at least another filly who could be. Think that Lisa Danielle has had 8 foals. Danny looks just like her. She’s quite powerfully built for a mare.
Lopresti said that he’s working on getting a grade 1 win for Successful Dan next year. That guy is a first class person. Like Morton Fink too. I think that it’s great that these horses are together. The two Dans are barn mates along with the other brother.
carol in arkansas
The other is Casino Dan…I think
Max
You’re right. The other Dan with Lopresti is Casino Dan. Think he’s a bay.
Max
Casino Dan is also a chestnut like mother and Wise Dan.
Terry Crow
Wise Dan is a once in a lifetime horse as was Z. It is amazing what this horse has developed into. Check his record as a younger horse.
Max
TC. Dan was quite a handful as a young colt. His owner even thought of entering him in a claiming race, but his trainer talked him out of it. Thank God for that. Dan shows no sign of slowing down. He’s incredible on turf, and even the snobby Brits have to concede he’s the best turf miler in the world. His times are amazing even on bad trips.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
To My Dear Orfevre
So hope we get to see you again this year. Sure would make a good christmas present to see you again right before Christmas. Hint , Hint. Whatever they decide with you just of most importance. Please stay safe. Love Ya very much.

Dear Max Moose is all ready for his big day and in a good mood.He thinks Nigel may go down to the start with him. As long as he keeps safe and sound!!lovely link about Kauto, can hardly believe it’s a year since he arrived at Laura’s,time flys. Good to see Master Minded has a good home near Newmarket.Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Took a lot of time to get through all of Moosie’s tweets. He’s busy. How can Nigel go with Moosie? Cannot see a place for trainers on the jump course when the horses circle and group before taking off. Maybe he’ll be at the side? Anyway please post when you know the results, or if the Moose runs at all. During the Breeders Cup, there was a discussion on one show of horses who get too smart to run when they know that a good meal awaits irregardless of the outcome. I laughed loudly at that and thought of the Mad one. Run Moose, but be safe.
Max
Sheena. Hopefully Master Minded is far away from Kauto. Kauto used to bite him on the practice gallops. Don’t think Kauto liked Master Minded. He was pals with the Tank.
Ann NC
Come on, Moosie!
