Happy Wednesday!
This week has brought warm and sunny weather to Lane’s End, which means many happy horses!
12Z received a visit from the blacksmith yesterday, during which his feet were assessed and trimmed. He was quite the well behaved colt! Alys was there to document the occasion, so you can watch the whole process on video below.
Enjoy!

I have a grade 3 membership. Since you are
closer to KY, you may want to move up to grade 2
and take advantage of some of their special perks so to speak.
Since I live as far away as I do, I’ll be lucky to get back
for a tour one day. I really want to visit Lane’s End and have
a chance to see my fella A. P. Indy.
But day to day anything can happen to change plans.
I would have loved to had the opportunity to see Marquetry at Old Friends.
Now he is no longer with us.
No gotta see if any foals want to be born.

Hello Everyone!
I am not on Facebook nor do I do Twitter, but if anyone is interested in the naming of the little Clydesdale foal in the AnheuserBusch ad (who happens to be a filly), I would like to nominate the name “RoseBud”. This may not be original, but it seems to fit.

Hey Barbara,
actually they’re looking for about 2000 goldies to partake in a cancer medical study to further canine cancer research. I believe the study is not such in a lab, but the dogs remain in their homes, but are to undergo certain tests from time to time, the study is to last 10 yrs. I believe your vet should know about the study, and who knows it may cut some of the vet bill for involvement in the study. I think it’s the goldies because they’re rather cancer prone, why, I have no idea. I have not lost a dog to cancer but a cat, lymphomatic cancer. Very sad. My Annie Hope, she was a rescue from a shelter, when it was my shift, ia found her on top of her dead littermates, she was so weak she couldn’t suckle on her own, so I force fed her for two weeks, every 2 hrs, took her to work with me, she came around, lived to be either 10 or 12 yrs old, she did a rather early exit.

Hi all,
Many sad moments on the blog!!
Sending virtual hugs to Rosemary on the loss of her mom and beloved pet. I lost my mom when I was 19 and have always felt cheated by the void she left. I have lost many beloved dogs too and they also leave a hole in your heart.
Hugs to the Bushes on the loss of their dear Barney, we had a beloved Scottie named “Tammy” and I know the strong personalties they can have.
Hugs to dear Michael Blowen on the loss of his Marquetry whom I met twice when I visited OLD FRIENDS. He was a real beauty and Michael used to play chase with him in his paddock. RIP beautiful boy.
On a brighter note Stephanoatsee ( A P INDY x Oatsee) Shacks 1/2 Bro is running today at Santa Anita race 8. Go baby go!!
Hugs and nuzzles to Big Mama and EARnie and safe trips to all horses and jockeys running.

Dear Sue, and your Cocker Cisco? Is he doing well with his eye problem?
Sue Fredrick - Wisconsin- Elated
Trina,
Thanks for asking about Cisco, such a good memory you have. Unfortunately, his eyesight is really going fast. He seems to see a little during the day, but at night it is really hard for him. I asked my vet about giving him Lutein, which is an eye vitamin for people, she looked it up in her vet books and said “go ahead it certainly won’t hurt him”. So I do give him one every day in hopes it will help him keep what little vision he has for as long as possible. I miss his spunky, playful nature as he seems to spend most of his time sleeping now. I will live with it, though, as he gives me so much joy as my best buddy. hugs
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sue Frederick:
My Russ took Lutein for years. He had macular degeneration of the Retina and eventually lost his sight. I think the vitamin helped slow down the process.
Sorry you and little Cisco are having this problem with his sight; but with you to love and care for him, you’ll help each other through. Love and Hugs, JB

Brad Free: Robert Lewis comes up short in entrants, long in story lines
By Brad Free Daily Racing Form 01/31/2013 4:13PM
ARCADIA, Calif. – The sun came out and the handicapping notebook filled up fast, with stuff like this . . .
◗ Average field size this winter at Santa Anita is a healthy 8.35 per race. Nice job by the racing office. In graded stakes, average field size is 6.80 and dropping – only four entered the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis on Saturday; just five in the Grade 2 San Antonio on Sunday.

A big thank should go to the Zayats who like Team Z used social media to great effect to keep racing fans informed about the horses whom we dearly love. Like the example set by Team Z, the Zayats included the fans in the life of their brave horse, Paynter, as he struggled against all odds to overcome very grave illnesses. Like Zenyatta, Paynter is an inspiration to all of us who love horses and want to see them race and live well and be treated with respect. Thank you to the Zayats and Team Z for letting us be a part of the lives of these two great horses, and for using social media to keep us so well informed.

Dear Folks,
It’s called an INDUSTRY.
Good that they could recognize great efforts by the team, that kept, Paynter ALIVE!

Yes, BF may be a good commentator, but on this call,he failed to see the bigger picture. A very important picture that is painted OFF the track and keeps these horses running.

HORSE RACING NATION: STEPHANOATSEE READY FOR THE STUB STAKES – good
luck to this talented boy.
Conditions were suitable for trainer Graham Motion to ship Stephanoatsee from the East Coast for Saturday’s Grade II, $200,000 Strub Stakes for 4-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles.
The son of A.P. Indy owned and bred by My Meadowview Farm, LLC, last ran on Nov. 17 at Aqueduct, finishing third in the Grade III Discovery Handicap at nine furlongs.
“We got in Tuesday afternoon and he’s been training every day since,” said Motion assistant Alice Clapham. “He’s been in great form here. We had horses here in the past for a couple of years, so we’ve been here before.
“This horse needs a mile and an eighth and it seemed like a good spot for him. There really wasn’t much around and he was ready to run.”
The field for the Strub: Fed Biz, Mike Smith, 2-1; Guilt Trip, Joe Talamo, 5-2; Tritap, Corey Nakatani, 5-2; Groovin’ Solo, Alonso Quinonez, 30-1; Handsome Mike, Mario Gutierrez, 6-1; and Stephanoatsee, Julien Leparoux, 4-1. Shadow Runner was scratched.

Led by 29 nominees from trainer Todd Pletcher, 369 horses were designated for the 2013 Triple Crown series prior to the Jan. 26 deadline for early nominations at a cost of $600 each.
This year’s total of early nominees is down from the 398 horses made eligible during the early phase in 2012. Twenty more horses were added to the 2012 roster during the Triple Crown’s late nomination phase, which lifted the final total to 418.

Baffert’s Flashback Makes Lewis Look Easy
By Jack Shinar The Blood-Horse Updated: Saturday, February 2, 2013 5:47 PM
Trainer Bob Baffert viewed the $200,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) as little more than a scrimmage for untested Flashback, and the talented son of Tapit proved he was ready for tougher with an easy tally at Santa Anita Park Feb. 2.
Making just his second start, Flashback shot to the top of Southern California’s 3-year-old ranks with an impressive win.
Flashback dictated the pace over his three Lewis rivals as the 1-2 favorite and drew off in the stretch after getting a slight tap on the shoulder from jockey Julien Leparoux. The rangy strawberry roan colt scored by 6 1/4 lengths while completing the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:42.95 over a fast track.
A full brother to two-time grade I winning filly Zazu, Gary and Mary West’s Flashback debuted with a 3 1/2-length win going seven furlongs on the Cushion Track at Betfair Hollywood Park Dec. 8.

Revolutionary Brave in Late Withers Run
By Claire Novak, The Blood-Horse Updated: Saturday, February 2, 2013 5:49 PM
What WinStar Farm’s Revolutionary lacks in seasoning he made up for in heart at Aqueduct Racetrack Feb. 2, closing late with a tremendously game effort to win the $200,000 Withers Stakes (gr. III) by a neck (VIDEO).
Last at the head of the stretch and stuck down on the rail under jockey Javier Castellano, the 3-year-old son of War Pass charged from the sixteenth pole to the wire, splitting horses bravely to get up over Escapefromreality in the shadow of the line.

It was amazing–Valid’s nose went right down to the dirt. Jockey Junior Alvarado lost both stirrups, but as Valid righted himself and ran on, Alvarado regained his irons in one smooth, quick move—incredible. Valid was making up ground down the backstretch, but then ran out of gas. Hope he came out of it all OK. I was watching on TVG.

JudyB. I think that I agree with Trina. Valid seemed to tire and slow down coming around that last turn. That was a very scary stumble, but he showed that he is a fighter to have carried on like that after that near fall. As you said, thank God that he did not fall and take JA down too. Here’s to better luck for them next time.

These are such exciting times leading up to the Derby.
Such fun watching the 3 year olds develop.
So, more than one post of these races and stories is going to happen.
Plus different videos can provide different view of a race.
Hugs,
Keta

Trina,
It was watching two amazing athletes recover in that Valid stumble.

Keta. Few would worry if something is posted on occasion more than once? It is often good to review these races, sometimes several times. We can always see something that we missed. We can also just scroll through posts that we do not want to read. Keep up your good work. Much appreciated.

Dear Sign:
I have to try to keep better track of what’s posted so I don’t keep repeating the same links. Reading from the bottom up, I miss some of them. Hugs, JB

Dear Judy B,
Do you believe there are 7 fillies entered in the KY Derby?
That sure would be awesome if those fillies made it to the gate.

HOW TO GET INTO THE KENTUCKY DERBY STARTING GATE – The “Road to the Kentucky Derby” is a 36-race series that awards points to the Top 4 finishers in each race. The Top 20 point earners nominated to the Triple Crown will earn a spot in the starting gate for the 139th running of the Grade I, $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands on Saturday, May 4. The Kentucky Derby field has been limited to 20 starters since 1975. At least 20 horses have entered the 1 ¼-mile race for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds every year since 2004, and 12 of the last 14 years.

Dear Keta, Max, Trina and Z Fans:
Thank you all for being so understanding about the repetitive posting.
Yes, Valid and JA showed so much courage in that race. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. I watched your link of that race 3 times, twice to see Valid run, and the last time to look more closely at Revolutionary. Land’s End must be very proud of R. He ran bravely too, just like our Z. These are both horses to watch in the future.

Dear Max:
Maybe we’ll see them in the Derby. Hope they stay healthy and sound. Hugs, JB

Hello all of my wonderful Zster and Dumpling friends! It has been a while again. What was Team Z’s Lanes End talking about in regard to sensitive comments made on this blog? I have known many of you Zsters and Dumplings from day one when Zenyatta’s diary began. Sometimes there may differences of opinion, but on the whole, we all respect one another and have the love of Zenyatta in common. At times we have some fun such as Terry Crow with his famous in jest “redneck jokes”, which we would at times find one of them to “be like something that we have experienced”, but those that love Zenyatta, love their dog or cat, love their family, have it not in their heart to deliberately cause problems.
THANKYOU LANES END for the video of 12Z. Z was surprisingly so good for them.
I only think of him being so full of life in the pasture!! 12Z looks awesome!!
My friends of Old Friends, I wish to express my sadness with the loss of Maguerty (?)
as I saw him there at Old Friends. I know Michael must be hurting; it is sad. Sir, a beautiful chestnut at Cedar Valley Horse Rescue does in deed remind me of him, though not a thoroughbred.
I have shared with you at times what’s going on at the Cedar Valley Rescue. Sir, the big 16 + hands horse was low on the totempul as he came last. Jo, who is a Hakney ponie (probably weighing 700-800 lbs) was bigger in her mind, chased big Sir away from feeders with ears back, kicked at the side of Sirs stall all as a reminder, turned with her back end to threaten Sir of her kick many times. I have learned so much!!!
Jo had respect of course for Fancy (mare) and Frito, the original gelding. Sir for months now was the one who respected and went out alone toward the close pasture and would wait for a safe return to the feeders. (Always last)
A couple weeks ago when it was my duty I noticed a flesh wound to Sirs left leg.
I reported this. I started to see a settling of the horses a week ago, where all was cordial and peaceful. Then I noticed that when Sir came to a different feeder that Fancy was feeding at with his ears back, the head of the herd possibly,( otherwise Frito for sure), Fancy moved quickly, leaving. Other volunteers reported the same questioning whether Sir is moving up in the herd.
Today I stopped by from a grandaughters basketball game and I think Sir has taken the lead of the herd!! All the other horses moved when Sir indicated that. So, from Sir being last, waiting for his hay, whatever transpired while none of us were there, he is relishing his achievement. When he had Fancy suddenly leaving a feeder and he came to it, he stretched his neck and head so high to the sky and raised his upper lip so I could see all his upper teeth and stood there like that for half a minute or so, as if to say “yes, I did it”.
I think he is gloating a bit so when he starts stalking toward the others I raise my voice, “Stop!! be a good boy”. He has settled but we now have to be more cautious when working out there.
Many of you have had horses, perhaps you can share with me the understanding of what we should be more aware of and tell me if my thinking is wrong. What generally transpires if a horse takes the head of the herd since I was not there? No other horse had injuries except Sir had the flesh wound to his leg. Now, how do we make him humble? I still so love taking care of these animals, even in this bitter Wisconsin cold. Hope all of you are well and stay warm if you are not in Fl. or Ca.
hugs to all, Sally If you would rather share your experience or opinions other than here, my email is ” grammabb@charter.net “

Dear Sally B.:
So enjoyed your sharing the stories of the horses at your rescue. I’m learning so much too about their different personalities and behaviors. They definitely make their point with each other. Have seen nipping and kicking and chasing. Once the hierarchy is determined, everybody settles down. Hugs, JB

Sally B…welcome back! I was wondering about you the other day because I had a nice conversation with a lady who volunteers in another rescue in your state. She was telling me about a program they have using blind horses as therapy for at-risk youth. And more than that–they have been invited to consider an appearance at the Rose Parade next year!!
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dear Sally, thank you for this great post. I can just see Sir standing there enjoying his Rocky moment–can’t you hear the soundtrack in the background? I hope all continues peacefully now.
Love in Dumplinghood and rescue,
Trina

Dear Sally B,
Great stories, thanks for sharing.

Dear Sign and Z Fans:
That would really be something if all or even some of the fillies make it to the Kentucky Derby. I do have to say, though, I get very anxious about twenty horses starting in the race. A lot of things can go wrong as we know. Just want them all to be safe and sound. Hugs, JB

Judy–you are so right. I’m am always thanful when it’s over if they all survive uninjured! Hugs.
