Happy Wednesday!
This week has brought warm and sunny weather to Lane’s End, which means many happy horses!
12Z received a visit from the blacksmith yesterday, during which his feet were assessed and trimmed. He was quite the well behaved colt! Alys was there to document the occasion, so you can watch the whole process on video below.
Enjoy!

Good morning all. I have a question and apologize for asking if it has already been addressed. If it was, I just didn’t see it. I heard that the horse who got loose on the street in MD was racing. I meant to put him in my virtual stable, but got distracted and didn’t make it. His name is Bullet Chaser or something like that.
@Sandy in NE Ohio–I did manage to add Dullahan.
Ann NC
Here you go,Barbara.
I’m sure by now he has many nicknames too.

Dear Carol,
Love your anachronym for dear 12 Z, maybe a good racing name??
You are correct RA foaled January 22 and was a week or two early.
Sorry to hear about your foal cam experience, maybe a lot of people
are joining. Remember it is not about you, it is about their process.
It is definatly worth the wait and gets us ready for Zenny’s
foaling. Great races at Oaklawn this weekend, have fun. Did you
ever get those cornbeef sandwhiches.

Dear Barbara,
Here is a repost of Bullet Catcher’s run in 1/11/2013 from DAILY RACING

gets the credit.
Enjoy, it is very scary.

Personally,
I think credit should be given to the “powers that be”, who watched over this horse, protected him and did not let this scary event lead to disaster.
I have had a deer come thru my windshield, the thought of a horse would really be tragic.
I think we should be counting the blessings that took place that frightful day.
So ,yes, thank you,Sign for the ORIGINAL post. Take the time to read Keta’s post, you will see, Bullet Catcher defied death twice. He got stranded in the snow and had to be rescued. Bullet Catcher’s life is an incredible story and I am sure there will be more stories about him.
Golly,if I am to give credit to those for first posting a story and be able to go back even a week,I better jump on the Procevera train. Choo Choo, here I come!

Ann C. Well said. Bullet Catcher is one truly amazing horse. I agree that there is likely to be more news to come about him. Hoping that it is all good.
Keta. Thanks for your post with that background information on Bullet Catcher.

Ann–I added him to my virtual stable. In doing so, I saw that he is the son of Strong Hop, whom we “met” a few years ago at Claiborne. We were told that SH always bit his mares when mating. Guess BC marches to the beat of a different drummer too–lol!

Stonestreet posted a picture of Rachel after her mud bath. She looked much like our Zenny in some of her photos-face and mane covered in mud. These 2 track tigers have turned into sweet lambs in motherhood.
Stonestreet said Rachel was getting her mane “pulled.” Anyone know what that means. I thought just brushing and combing and getting the mud out in prep for the coming baby?
zenyen
Shirlee,
‘Pulling’ a mane shortens it up and also will thin it out so it is more manageable and easier to keep clean. Manes do very strange things if you try to cut them with scissors so most people ‘pull’ the mane.
Basically it is what it says. You comb through the mane, take a small thatch of hairs (usually no more than 10 at a time) then brush the rest back up towards the neck and ‘pull’ out the small thatch. You do this, bit by bit until you get the mane up to the length and thickness desired.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Shirleeindy.
It also places the hair in the direction that you are pulling as Zenyen said
so they are organized.
shirleeinindy
Zen, thanks for the information. No wonder they said she didn’t like it much. Don’t think I would like it either.

Danville is home town. Went to school at Midway back in the day when it was a high school and junior college. Was at Midway for 6 years and really got into the horses there. Most of the horse power my Indy friends know about it is the kind that comes with gasoline engines. Of course, they got a big laugh out of me when I went to the 500 and asked where were the betting windows.

I have been off this site for several months due to drastic life changing events First of all, in late August or early Sept. 2012, my five-year-old Cavalier Spaniel, Reba, after a routine blood test prior to teeth cleaning, indicated she had cancer. Several subsequent blood tests and ultrasounds confirmed the fact and on she lost her battle with the disease on October 19, 2012. She was a beautiful, perfect little soul and she was only five years old.
My mother’s health hasn’t been deteriorating over the past two years and on January 1, 2013, she passed away peacefully in her sleep. She was a wonderful person, mother and friend. We are all still devastated by her death.
I would like to thank Trina for her inspirational words during these times. To those who very thoughtfully sent me cards by mail and email cards, I cannot express how touched I am. I haven’t mentioned you by name because I don’t want to leave anyone out, but I intend to put all the cards in my mother’s In Memory Book. I will then be in a better position to thank you individually.
I chose today to post because today is the beginning of a new month and hopefully on to a happy new year.

Rosemary. I am very sorry to learn of your loss. It is very hard to lose a mother. It is also hard to lose a best friend like your Reba. May you find some comfort to bear this pain. I am glad that Trina has given you some inspiration. Trina is a kind and thoughtful person who tries to make people feel better. Rosemary. Sorry for your losses. That’s a lot to take in when they are so close together. I have a cute story about Reba McEntire (I’m assuming that’s who you named your dog after).
Nov 1, 1991, I went to her concert in Oakland and had backstage passes. During that time, we had a Furniture Polish company and my Dad gave me a bottle with a card on it to give to her. Everyone else gave her flowers and candy. I gave her a bottle of furniture polish. LOL… She gave me a huge hug and said: “Never, has anyone given me something like this!” One of her bouncer’s made a joke of it. Since, I was so star struck with Reba, I was also embarrassed. She is just a lil thing too. Nov 9th, 1991 my dad passed away. I went to another concert in Sacramento a few years later and had back stage passes and Reba remembered me for the furniture polish and I told her that it meant a great deal to me that she remembered. However, after dad passed, I wrote her a letter and low and behold, a few weeks later, I had a big package from Reba. I was like: I didn’t order anything. Inside was an autographed photo that said: “To Heidi, Walk On!” And a lovely letter. How special is that? Reba is such a loving and gracious lady. Just thought this story might lift you up a lil bit. Perhaps, listen to the song “Walk on?” I know it brought some comfort to me during those difficult times.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Great story, Heidi. Thanks for sharing. Hugs.

Heid: My reba was ondeed namd after Reba McEntire. She was a ruby Cavalier – all beautiful red with no white. Thank you for sharing your story. Lucky you to have met her.
HeidiK Vallejo,Ca PUJ
Rosemary. Reba was and still is my Idol. Ironically, I used to ride a filly by the name of Royal Reba. She was named after Reba too. She was just a lil chestnut afraid of everything. I took extra care with Reba. Spent many hours just sitting in her stall talking to her or running my hands on her. After weeks, I gained her trust and she would be an angel on the track. One day, while going back to the barn, I untied my reigns and let them just dangle. We were getting close to the bridge and a peacock jumped out and she took off leaving me in the dust. She ran straight to her stall! LOL
Anything that has the name Reba is and will be a spitfire if you ask me!!!

Santa Anita: Smith confident Fed Biz can handle Strub’s longer distance
By Steve Andersen Daily Racing Form 01/31/2013 3:59PM
ARCADIA, Calif. – Fed Biz has made quite an impression on Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith since Christmas.
On Dec. 26, Fed Biz threw a tantrum in the starting gate before the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes and finished sixth. He left Smith with a sizeable bruise on his calf.
Things went more smoothly in the Grade 2 San Fernando Stakes on Jan. 12, a race Fed Biz won by a head over Tritap. The win has left Fed Biz as the favorite for the $200,000 Strub Stakes for 4-year-olds at Santa Anita on Saturday, and Smith confident that the colt can win the third stakes of his career.
“He’s a fighter,” Smith said.
Owned by Kaleem Shah and trained by Bob Baffert, Fed Biz is the likely pacesetter in the 1 1/8-mile Strub. The race is a key prep for the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap for older horses on March 2.

Dear Alys and Lanes End,
Love the photo above of Zenny, her dapples are gorgeous, from the KY sun,
strong in the winter. She looks so happy and relazed and soon to have
her second wonderful “foal”. Can hardly wait.
Love the farrier/12 Z videos. Have had this experience with adult horses only.
New equipment and focus on development of the feet and hooves. Barefoot
unil training? – cracked hooves common when barefoot. Think you said that
they are trimmed every 6 week. What a huge amount of knowledge goes into
breeding and raising foals. So very wondeful to be a part of 12 Z’s lessons
and “MA MA” Z’s broodmare quest for BROODMARE OF THE YEAR AND HALL
OF FAME.
GO ZENNY, YOU CAN DO IT !!!!

@Rosemary –I am just shocked about your dreadful losses in the past year. I have experienced both too, and they are truly heart-rending. It was our family horse who pulled me out of depair after the loss of my mom.
And why are all the dogs getting cancer? It used to be unheard of. I am so sorry for that loss, which cuts as deeply as that of a human family member.

Never heard of him before and he was cross registered. I didn’t even know that until I saw the video. I thought, hmm, those white markings would be that of a paint or pinto. I had a double registered Pinto (other breeds than a cross with a Quarter Horse Paints), My father bought her and her name was “Painted Heart.” Perfect name because, she had an upside down heart on her left shoulder. Even a tattoo that’s how we knew she was a TB. He got her and another QH mare at the same time to start a broodmare band for the QH Stallions we had.
