Happy Wednesday!
This week has brought warm and sunny weather to Lane’s End, which means many happy horses!
12Z received a visit from the blacksmith yesterday, during which his feet were assessed and trimmed. He was quite the well behaved colt! Alys was there to document the occasion, so you can watch the whole process on video below.
Enjoy!

Dear Janet and Louise,
That filly with the gorgeous white blaze in stall 3 (stablemates) is sooo adorable.
She finally went to sleep, head got heavy and she finally laid
down. Mama is eating and watching. What a great find.
Can hardly wait to see 13 Z, hope it is a grey filly.
Louise Castello
Dear Sign, Isn’t that baby precious? And she’s so big. 140 lbs seems like a really big girl to me. I’m having the best time watching and getting useless at night because I’m checking constantly for more foals to come and getting nothing else done.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Janet,
It is definately an addiction. The mares are just so quiet, they stand their
like they are holding on to a very precious secret (and they are, so the
wild animals will not see or hear) and no one is supposed to know.
When they fall it is so quick and they are up again. That filly
was so cute, sitting so long with her head up then head down
and then resting with all fours out and head on straw. Mom standing around
guarding.
Will have to look up Tiznow’s coloring, thought he was a bay.
Too much fun !!!!
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
PS:
Can hardly wait for 13 Z, this is a good practice.
Janet Newman
Tiznow is listed as brown. If go on the stallion barn and click on Winstar stallions, you will see pictures of all of their standing stallions.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Janet,
He has a white blaze and two white back feet??
The filly looks chestnut, maybe because she is so new.
She is so laid back compared to 12 Z, he was up and running
everywhere a few hours old.
Janet Newman
I get excited seeing each mare foal and how different they are.
Everytime I watch one, I remember how Ann Moss described Zenyatta
as doing “everything” so perfect.
While we cannot watch her, we can be there with her in our thoughts and prayers
during her foaling. In my mind I can see her foaling and doing it as
Ann Moss put it “perfectly”.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Janet,
Watching the foal cams makes it real that Zenny is going to foal soon.
We may not see it, but we know how “perfectly” she did it the first
time and hopefully all will go well with 13 Z – a grey filly ????
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Louise,
She sure is big and sooo cute, nursing like a cutie.
Louise Castello
Sign, I’m wishing for a grey filly, too.

Dear Shirleeindy and other MMM fans:
(great comment about MMM and the off track in his last race, not racing in concert !!)
HORSE RACING NATION: MUCHO MACHO MAN MAY START IN THE DONN HANDICAP
Not originally on his schedule, the $500,000 Donn Handicap (G1) is, at least, a possible next start for Mucho Macho Man.
The 5-year-old son of Macho Uno is on the list of 17 names nominated for the 57th running of the 1 1/8-mile handicap on Feb. 9 at Gulfstream Park.
“We nominated him so we could have the option to consider it,” said Finn Green, stable manager for Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, whose multiple-stakes winner has earned $2.3 million. “We won’t make that call until next Wednesday.”
The Kathy Ritvo-trained Mucho Macho Man, who closed out a successful 2012 campaign with a close second-place finish behind Fort Larned in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), turned in an uncharacteristic off-the-board finish in the $400,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Classic on Jan. 19.
After stalking the early pace over the sealed sloppy track, Mucho Macho Man stopped extending himself on the turn into the homestretch and was taken in hand by jockey Mike Smith.
“Between him and the racetrack the chemistry wasn’t good enough for a concert,” Green said.
Mucho Macho Man, whose only other poor performance in his 19-race career came over a sloppy track in a seventh-place finish in the 2011 Belmont Stakes (G1), came out of his 2013 debut in good order.
“It’s probably somewhere between a six and seven-furlong work,” said Green, estimating the exertion-output in Mucho Macho Man’s performance in the Florida Sunshine Millions Classic. “That’s what we’ve considered it to be. It did not deplete him at all.”

Hello Everyone!
Z12 was a real trooper. He didn’t seem to be bothered by the process at all. I love his brown little nose. He is very handsome. Alys thank you so much for doing this for all of us. Our Zenny is looking very pregnant. Did i read that she is do in May?

APPROXIMATE ZENYATTA DUE DATE
Announced Zenny in foal, May 8, 2012 – assume this is the 45 day US, as 30 was
preliminary last foaling.
Breeding around March 24, 2012; Approximate foaling date – February 28, 2013
Today Zenny is approximately 300 days in foal.

@Terry Crow- I just saw something on the news tonight that made me think about you and all the other rednecks out there. It was a very windy day here in Lexington today, so windy that a window on a ‘high rise’ (30 stories) became loose. They shut down part of Main Street and went up on a crane to fix the window. Black Caviar returns to the track
Posted by: AAP Filled in: Australian Horse Racing | 1/2/2013 at 2:00pm
Australia’s world champion racehorse Black Caviar comes to Caulfield on Saturday for her first public appearance since the Queen patted her on the head at Royal Ascot eight months ago.
She’ll walk to the racecourse from her stable, she’ll stand in her usual stall and she’ll gaze curiously at the crowd jostling for a look at her.
The saddle will go on half an hour before she’s due to go onto the track and she’ll walk around under the trees in the pre-parade ring.
She’ll sense the excitement and she’ll break out, as she usually does, in a light sweat.
So will her trainer.
Peter Moody knows what his horse doesn’t – that Black Caviar is one of the very best thoroughbreds alive.
He knows all about the 22-from-22 record she has built and he admits the questioning fingers will be pointed at him if anything goes wrong.

Horsemen on Twitter find faster, better way to engage fans
By Marcus Hersh Daily Racing Form 01/31/2013 3:14PM
Frac Daddy entered the Holy Bull Stakes on Jan. 26 at Gulfstream Park as a promising 3-year-old colt who had finished second in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in his last start at age 2. Horseplayers bet him to 5-1 in the Holy Bull, but his backers never even got a thrill: Frac Daddy finished a flat, distant sixth.
What happened?
The answer to this kind of question, if it comes at all, is typically filtered out a day or more later, when someone – reporter, racetrack publicity – interviews a horse’s connections and publishes what was said. In this case, an answer hit the public domain minutes after Frac Daddy crossed the finish line. The race ended at 5:10 p.m. Eastern. At 5:28, Frac Daddy’s trainer, Ken McPeek, posted Holy Bull news on his Twitter account.
“Humbling game,” McPeek wrote. “Frac Daddy grabbed a quarter and was really green. Needs blinkers and maturity. We learned something today. Longer stretch.”

Oaklawn Park: Lukas to stage another raiding party at Fair Grounds
By Mary Rampellini
Lynn Roberts
Oxbow will ship to Fair Grounds for the Risen Star with an eye to the Louisiana Derby.
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas is planning another New Orleans invasion. He said at his Oaklawn Park base on Tuesday that Oxbow is among four horses he has pointing for each of the graded stakes to be run at Fair Grounds on Feb. 23.
“The races fit, and it’s a lot easier to take four down there than one,” said Lukas.
Lukas is 2 for 4 with his stakes starters this meet at Fair Grounds. Oxbow was an 11-length winner of the Grade 3, $200,000 Lecomte on Jan. 19, and last weekend Optimizer put up a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 100 for winning the Grade 3, $125,000 Colonel E.R. Bradley.
Oxbow is now going back for the Grade 2, $400,000 Risen Star, said Lukas. The 1 1/16-mile race is worth 50 points to the winner on the new system governing Kentucky Derby eligibility. Oxbow sits third in the latest standings, with 11 points. Jon Court, who rode Oxbow in the Lecomte, has the mount in the Risen Star, which could serve as Oxbow’s springboard to the richest race at Fair Grounds, the Grade 2, $1 million Louisiana Derby on March 30.
“If he continues to have an affinity for that whole situation, he could end up going right back for the derby,” Lukas said of Oxbow.
[ROAD TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY: Prep races, point standings, replays]
Optimizer will run next in the Grade 3, $150,000 Fair Grounds Handicap, while Lukas said Skyring is scheduled to join his stablemates on the trip to New Orleans to run in the Grade 3, $150,000 Mineshaft Handicap. Lukas also plans to bring a 3-year-old filly for the Grade 3, $200,000 Rachel Alexandra. At this point, he said it could be Broken Spell, the runner-up in last year’s Grade 1 Alcibiades, or Neith, fourth-place finisher in the $60,000 Dixie Belle at Oaklawn.
Court will have the mount on Lukas’s other stakes starters Feb. 23. All of the horses on deck for the rich program are owned by the Bluegrass Hall operation of Brad Kelley.

Dear Judy,
Of course, Zenyatta got training at the Mayberrys before she moved to John’s barn. I’m just saying she went to John’s at the BEGINNING of her 2yo year, not AFTER it. Here’s the time schedule:
Zenyatta was born April 1, 2004. She was bought by the Mosses at the September yearling sales at Keeneland in September 2005. She was with the Mayberrys from October 2005 to May 2006, then she went to John’s barn, so she arrived there early in her two-year-old year, not at the end.

Dear Judy B,
No apology necessary Judy B, you are correct.
I did not mention ANY timeframe in my post
“Zenny went to John Shirreff’s barn after two year old
training (no timeframe), and was then named”.
The comment from Trina was “Zenny got her 2 year old
training at John Shirreff’s barn”, which is INCORRECT as
you pointed out; she received it from the Mayberry’s and
you posted the link that showed she got her training there.
It is important when commenting to read the post in it’s entirity
with appropriate context.
Thanks so much Judy B for the comment/ correction and
Link to the Mayberry’s. Don’t want the new people on
the blog to be confused.
Thanks so much Judy B for all of your heart warming contributions
to this site, you are a delight and a joy as a person and friend.

Indeed, I should have said Z got MOST of her 2yo training at John’s–NOT as you, Sign, continue to suggest, at the Mayberrys’. Zenny turned two biologically on April 1, 2006 at Mayberry Farm. She moved to John’s barn the NEXT MONTH, so that makes one, maybe one and a half months of two-year-old training at Mayberry Farm. Or, if you consider her technically two years old on Jan 1, 2006, as the Jockey Club would for racing purposes, that makes maybe four months of two-year-old training at Mayberry Farm. Amen and God bless her, the Mayberrys, John, and you too, Sign. Finis.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Well, just one more thing, as Columbo used to say. Here’s another lovely article about the Mayberrys. This article specifies that Z left Mayberry Farm in April 2006: “Girl Power! In April 2006, Zenyatta—her initial training in Ocala completed—was shipped to the barn of trainer John Shirreffs at Hollywood Park in Southern California.”

Dear Janet and Louise,
Coli Bear is now pacing, maybe soon, no foal yet.
Posted a link that shows why they look so
big before foaling. The foal drops very low
as the pelvic area loosens and readies
for the foaling. Forgot about that from last
year and Zenny’s foaling. Thanks for your
great comment Janet – Foaling expert extroindinaire.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Well, both Coli Bear’s and Rockcide’s stalls are empty this morning. I guess the girls are outside. That probably means no babies for a few hours anyway. Maybe tonight? Mama Nadine and her filly must be out also.
Janet Newman
Laura J,
The usual routine is taking them out while stalls
are cleaned. Also allows them outside time.
There has been occasions when the mare foals outside
and the staff is ready for outdoor births.
It seems the favorite times to foal are between
10 at night to 6 am.
They may keep Mama Nadine and her foal another day or two.
Just depends if there is another mare they need to move in.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Janet,
Thanks for the clarification. I left you a comment on
stablemates as Coli Bear and Rockside’s stalls were empty.
Really glad to see all of the cleaning going on. How fun,
take a mare out and clean her stall, whoops a foal.
Real “midwifery” work. “Paddock births” instead of home births.
One can learn a lot from just watching and reading, was thinking
all day how much fun it would be to work at a TB farm in the foaling area.
My friend is a midwife and we always joke around about how 99% happy all of her patient/babies are. A great and fun part of medicine.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
I hope they post a vid of Mama Nadine and filly outside. I enjoy those.
I’ll be keeping my fingers and toes crossed for something to happen this evening. I missed the birth of MN13 by two minutes max. MN was fussing and carrying on, but I had things to do upstairs. I thought I could get back in time. :-( No such luck.
I did manage to catch Blue Orleans, though.
BTW, if I may ask, what grade level are you? I bought a G3, but am wondering whether it would be worthwhile to upgrade next year.
Janet Newman
Sign,
I am no expert, just an avid fan of the foaling process.

Dear Anne from Paramount, CA,
Every horse even a yearling has to have a cat or two !!!
They were so funny running around the barn.
Hard to believe that gorgeous place is a barn.
Love the cement flooring, really reduces dust
and “mess”.
