Happy Wednesday!
This week has brought warm and sunny weather to Lane’s End, which means many happy horses!
12Z received a visit from the blacksmith yesterday, during which his feet were assessed and trimmed. He was quite the well behaved colt! Alys was there to document the occasion, so you can watch the whole process on video below.
Enjoy!

He is really big, and he looks very well behaved! He will surely follow in the hoof- steps of his mom!
Anja Martin
He’s beautiful, like his Mama and Daddy and so well behaved! Thanks for sharing the photos and video.
Jane
Thank you for the pictures and videos. I love seeing any progress/news of Queen Z and her son. Most of us are very appreciative.
Max
@Zenyatta. You are as beautiful and serene as ever. Your baby is quickly growing up. His ears are world class. Such a nice young colt. These are great photos and videos. Love that cat surveying the scene in the background.

Thank you so much, Lanes End, for these beautiful pictures and videos. Z12 is so well behaved. It made my day seeing him. He has grown so much. It’s hard to believe he’s so big now. And Zenyatta is HUGE!! She looks absolutely beautiful, though, as always.
Leslie R.
Thank you Lane’s End for sharing the video and pics! Zenny looks gorgeous and happy! 12Z is getting big. It was fun watching the video of him getting his hooves trimmed. He’s very well behaved and he looks so much like his mom. It is hard to believe that a year has almost gone by since he was born. Before we know it, 13Z will be here. I can’t wait for that big day!
Hugs to all,
Leslie

At what age will he get his first shoes?

What a good boy! He will be big, too. Lovely yearling. Any name yet? Z12 is sounding a little impersonal given how long we have known him!
Jamie Warren
He sure is a good boy, not a single fuss!

I love the professionalism and great calm handling of 12Z by Lanes End Staff. He has grown so much and is so well behaved himself. Also very aware and curious of his surrondings. Mom looks lovely too. I really miss her.
Thanks for the keeping us up to date. We’re living vicariously through all of you. I’d trade jobs in a heartbeat.
Timmi
What a good boy! and those ears…Wondering what that floor is made of?

I cannot thank LE enough for providing us with all these goodies. The videos are priceless and our Queen looks quite content in the final stages of her pregnancy. Alys, you are among my favorite people…keep the pictures and videos coming. :-)
tony
I’d know those ears anywhere. It looks like Zenny taught 12Z some good manners which will carry him well throughout his life. Zenny looks great as ever. Thanks to the Mosses, LE and all who manage this site. It’s always nice to visit here and get the latest Z news.

Hello to one and all.
How great to have these videos to watch! It’s so different than looking at photos. Thank you so much for taking the time to let us all see Z-12 as some of you see him every day. Special thanks to Alys and the folks at LE for taking such good care of us! Busy as I know you are, you still make time to post all the latest news.
I agree that Z-12 was very well-behaved for a youngster. And it was fun to see him in his leggy, adolescent body. With his ears pricked, I see Zenny looking right back at me….although I still say that there’s a Bernie “je ne sais quoi” that adds the spice to that inquisitive look.
So great to see Dumplings old and new stopping by to visit! Always makes me smile, remembering the days of Dot-Zen’s diary and all the friends I made there. My computer woes continue but I have now ordered a new computer and should be back to normal by the end of February….I know. Ridiculously long. But I’ll need to transfer the contents of the old machine onto the new one before I can really use the latter. I did however manage a new article on THE VAULT. Just click on my name here and you’ll go there automatically. Zenny is not the subject, but she does put in a cameo appearance with her firstborn! (For those rushing around in December, the previous article was about another equine love of mine, Canada’s Queen of Racing and the only filly to ever win a Triple Crown against the boys, Dance Smartly. I’ve also added a search engine and other features on the home page so that you can roam around the site happily. And get this: there are now 88,000 readers who have visited THE VAULT. How cool is that?)
Other than trying to overcome. technical ills, I’ve been busy doing my art and getting an art studio organized where I can work properly (my son’s former bedroom.) I work in what is called mixed media — paper, acrylic, fabric and so forth. So I need lots of room for bins of paper, fabric, etc. as well as a huge table to work on and storage for paints, brushes and so forth. I actually wanted to be a professional artist back in my youth but my parents gave it thumbs down. So it’s great to now have the time ( recently retired) to pursue my “other” great passion.
It’s been a tough year: I lost the 5th close friend to cancer in December. I was just so overcome with so many losses over the last 4 years that I have yet to cry. I will, of course. But, as so many of you will understand, one canbe just so devastated that even tears run dry.
My sweet Daisy and the kitties are all fine, as is the rest of my human family. And Daisy was painted by an American artist recently and her portrait is now on tour! I’d like to buy the original but at $697.00 USD she’s out of my price range for now. The artist was doing a Paint A Dog A Day project &a friend sent in a photo of Daisy taken on the first day that she came home with me. On the artist’s site you can even buy Daisy note cards, posters and copies of the original. I’ll post the site address a little later. I’m using my son’s iPad and there’s no way I can copy the URL without losing this text.LOL!
Love to all and kisses to my Big Girl and her son!
Ann Maree / Tennessee
Good to see you posting here on Zenny’s site…reminiscent of our “good old days”…we meet up on FB, but meeting here is still very special. Hugs! Love and hugs to Daisy and the kitties!!

Dear Abigail:
Good to hear from you. Daisy looks so comfy snoozing in her chair. Talented artist.
Sorry to hear of the loss of so many of your friends. Very sad. Love and Hugs, JB

Hi Judy!
So nice to find your warmth here this morning. I know you know very well of what I speak. I appreciate the comfort so much. Hugs!

Hi Abigail
It was great to hear from you and other original Z fans from her daily diary which I really miss. I too am a DanceSmartly lover and fan. I’ll never forget meeting her in Ocala with her wonderful female groom who let me feed her carrots and gave me her training plates. Getting the tour from Jim Day and watching her run with other greats. Wilderness Song and Sky Classic.Watching her stop and stare with that “look of eagles” on her cool down laps. I have a large painting of her in my family room. Which wasn’t very common in the early 90’s but is very popular now.
I can’t wait to go to the vault and explore. Thanks ever so much :)

Abigail
I’ve just read your article on DanceSmartly it brought smiles and tear to my eyes. Thankyou.
And yes I saw that look in her eyes. I visited her the spring after her amazing year, she must have been recovering or trying to recover from her injury at that time. It was magical to visit with her. I love the photos of her in the Kentucky paddock by “the BloodHorse”. Is there a site I can see all of those photos. She looks so beautiful with all her damples and so athletic.:) Thanks Cindy
Abigail_1849
Hi Cindy. Another Dance Smartly fan! How great is that! I must tell you that it was a tough article to write because there’s so little available information or even photos of her available anywhere. But then I got lucky. A member of Zenny’s Tribe on Facebook connected me to the woman that I dedicated the article to and she supplied insight into DS’s character, as well as pix of her as a broodmare. The Blood-Horse photos are by Anne Eberhardt Keogh. Try to call them up by going to the Blood-Horse photo store. If that doesn’t work, click on my name above and leave me your email on The Vault. I can send you scans — the two are in my private photo collection. Hugs!

The videos and pic of Zenny are a feast for the eyes. We cannot thank everyone who is part of Team Z enough for spending time to give us these gems.

Abigail,
Good to hear from you! Thanks for the link to “calendar girl” Daisy!! She is very cute — great picture!!
Sorry that you have lost friends over the past 4 years. I do sincerely hope that this year will be kinder to you and happier, too.
Take care and best wishes!
Abigail_1849
Hi Marshall ! How great to hear from you as well and to receive these kind thoughts. Yes, my wish is that I get a respite from these kinds of losses in 2013. I know that the cycle of life is at work in my own life in mysterious ways. I’m keeping that little flame that burns inside us all bright and healthy until I feel that I can dance again. Hugs!

Daisy looks so happy and content, getting her “beauty rest.” Too cute!
Abigail_1849
Sweet Trina. Lovely to hear your voice, my friend. Daisy does look so happy to have found a real home and the artist caught her expression exactly. I’m so enjoying her, Trina. She’s so sweet and such a great partner, always ready & willing to do whatever with me! Hugs!

Hello Everyone!
Z12 was a real trooper. He didn’t seem to be bothered by the process at all. I love his brown little nose. He is very handsome. Alys thank you so much for doing this for all of us. Our Zenny is looking very pregnant. Did i read that she is do in May?
♥♥ Auntie Judy aka JAG ♥♥

Wow! 12Z,what a big boy you are. He was so good for his trimming. I am so amazed. When does he get a pair of shoes. Great conformation on our young man!!
Joanna from TX
By the end of the 3rd vid, I found myself saying ‘good boy!’ What an impressive job you guys have done with his socializing and manners. Well done!
Colleen
Little Z has a bit of attitude about him :) Haha, that sass will come in handy in his future. Such a big boy, and he stood so still like he’s been doing it for years. Thanks for posting!
Susan
Zenyatta looks like it won’t be long before 13Z arrives. It is so good to get a new story with pictures of her and videos of that big boy of hers.
Pat miller
Baby Z is beautiful and I know Zenyatta gets the best care. Just wondering if after this next colt is born she will ever see a track again, doing what she loves most running. Even just for a trot. I know everthing is about money but pregnant over and over seems cruel. We love seeing her. She did everything that was asked of her. Give her a good life.
tony
Pat, I wouldn’t worry about Zenny in her new life in retirement. She is finally able to enjoy just being a horse and that includes motherhood. She will always get the best of care and seems to enjoy life at LE immensely. The Mosses will always do what is best for her and having this site to follow her and 12Z has been something very special.
Zenyen
Pat,
To reiterate what Tony has already well put, Zenyatta *is* doing what she loves; being a horse.
She has a wide open field to run in, when she feels like it, the sun on her withers the mud to roll in, good friends to race and then stand next too and swish off flies while enjoying the Kentucky breeze. She has a farm full of humans who dote upon her and loving owners who visit her regularly and she has a foal of her own to shower with love and give kisses.
I remember when 12Z was born and the first time they were out in the field and Ann Moss said herself, usually Zenyatta would be over by the fence with people but now she had *him* to love and give kisses too and she (Zenyatta) was so happy.
Barn 55, John Sherriffs and his crew do a FANTASTIC job for their charges but it does not change the fact that held in a 10×12 stall for 22 hours out of the day, unable to touch another horse, unable to leave that stall or graze except at the end of a lead shank is not a natural life for a horse.
Zenyatta’s being pregnant has NOTHING to do with money as the Mosses have said time and again they are not interested in selling her foals. It is about passing on to the next generation of Thoroughbreds, Zenyatta’s sound body, her sound mind and her will and heart to win.
casey
Pat, Zenny is a happy mare, and believe it or not, mares do better when they are kept in foal. When their body needs a break, they won’t “take” and will remain “open” for the year. God has provided this little “safety net” for our beloved horses. Zenny has nothing left to prove on the track, and if you look back at the earlier blogs, you will see that she took to motherhood the way she dominated the track, with grace, gentleness and intelligence. (Notice too, how all the other foals that were with 12Z and the Queen always gravitated towards her)
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dear Mosses and Lane’s End, thank you for giving Z the good life she deserves. I’m sure she is happy with you and with her babies, may they be many!

Dear Pat,
One thing to keep in mind is that horses in the wild get pregnant every year
in their herd to allow the herd to grow. Their bodies will not get pregnant when
they need to take a rest. Resting before that time may lead to difficulties
getting pregnant again. Even though horses are domesticated their bodies
still function innately under the above “rule”.
Very different from the control we have has humans, to get pregnant or not.
Each animal species has a routine way to procreate it self.

Thank you Team Zenyatta, Team Lane’s End, Alys, and all for allowing us to share in events in Zenyatta and Prinz’s lives.
Zenyatta, you look so happy and healthy….and….so big!!! I can hardly wait to see Z13.
Our Z12 is so handsome. As I have written before, I could pick those ears out of any line up!! I noticed how he looks into the camera. I remember in an early video the comment was made about how aware he was. Well, he still is. Won’t he look spectacular in roses, black-eyed susans, etc, etc?!?!?
Take care all. We are flooding here in Boone. Hope everyone remains safe tonight!!!
Love,
Mary in Boone
Marshall (NC broad)
Oh, my!
Mary, please be careful and stay safe. Hope you are out of harm’s way and will not be flooded.
All the best! Hugs

Dear Mary, prayers are being sent for your personal safety and the safety of your loved ones and property, and the same for all your neighbors.

Dear Lane’s End Thank you so much for the pictures and video. I will show the children. I love it and so will they. We call him Baby Z. He is such a good boy just like his mom. Oh I just loved watching all three. I even saw a barn cat in the background. I love you Zenyatta and I love Baby Z. We are lucky to have both in our lives. I am sending many hugs and kisses to Zenyatta and her Beautiful son XXXOOO, Shari and Homeroom 215

He’s getting big, not every horse is born into stardom. Lucky guy, but he has high expectations to fill. I think he will be a winner. Mama Z, still love you.
