Happy Wednesday!
This week has brought warm and sunny weather to Lane’s End, which means many happy horses!
12Z received a visit from the blacksmith yesterday, during which his feet were assessed and trimmed. He was quite the well behaved colt! Alys was there to document the occasion, so you can watch the whole process on video below.
Enjoy!

Thunder Gulch looks great! I’ll never forget that Derby day. My younger sister, her husband, and I went to an OTB (off-track betting) to watch the race. I didn’t know anything about the horses in the race. We were looking at the racing form and when I saw his name I pointed right to it and said “He’s gonna win.” And he did!!! I was shocked! Wish I could find that ‘frequency’ again. :D

Well-related mare on target for Grafton
Posted by: AAP Filled in: Australian Horse Racing | 6/2/2013 at 12:15pm
Former Victorian-trained mare Myonerose, who will be chasing back-to-back wins when she lines up at Grafton on Thursday, has a link to Australia’s most famous race.
“She comes from the same family as Empire Rose,” new trainer Brett Bellamy said.
“The further she goes the better she will be suited.”
Empire Rose finished runner-up to Kensei in the 1987 Melbourne Cup then won the following year.
Myonerose, by Danzero out of the Zabeel mare Avert, tackles the Dougherty Constructions Class 2 Handicap (1600m).

A WARNING today from http://horseandman.com/ (the following text is all from that website.)
PEOPLE AND ANIMALS —//DO NOT DRINK FROM THE NEW POCKET HOSE
The water in this hose may become contaminated and cause serious health effects.
The “do not drink” warning is buried in the product packaging, and it is not posted on the website and needs to be! Their website is pockethose.com, you may recognize it from TV advertising.
Be cautious – rather safe than sorry!
I especially want to pass this along to horse people as this looked ideal for filling the horse trough in the winter, because it’s light, compact and easy to drain and bring back into the house so that it doesn’t freeze. I also thought it would be great to store in a horse trailer or camper for drinking water or horse water. I ordered a few of them from the website, and the website does not disclose any warnings. The hoses come in a plastic container with a label, and the caution is on the INSIDE of the label where most people will not look. Each hose has a small instruction tag attached to it, but no warnings there either.
This is exactly how the caution reads:
WARNING
DO NOT drink from this hose.
The water in this hose may become contaminated and cause serious health effects.
I thought the warning might just be because bacteria can grow in any hose, so I called the product’s customer service line, and the person I talked to CONFIRMED that these hoses should only be used for things like washing your car and watering plants. I directly asked him about using it for horse water and he said no, do not use it for animals because of the chemicals that will come out in the water. I am going to push for them to disclose this in their advertising, but in the meantime please help get the word out! FROM: http://horseandman.com/

Just FYI—I wouldn’t take that as gospel without independent confirmation. The Horse and Man blogger didn’t check things out herself; she reproduced the text of an email she received, without attribution to a source. Sometimes such emails are accurate. Often they are not (remember the “Swiffer is poisonous to pets” nonsense that still occasionally pops up).
Trina Nagele in So Cal
You’re right that we should check things out, so I just now called their customer service line and it was confirmed to me that the “Pocket Hose” should NOT be used for water for “any living thing.”
Trina Nagele in So Cal
…But I’m sure the gentleman DIDN’T mean to include plants in that exclusion–that’s just how he phrased it when I asked about dogs in addition to horses.

Dear Judy,
I was going back and reading some posts that I had missed. I saw your comments about the Stud Muffins that you were going to carry GIGI and how Charlie loved them.
Reminded me, In Ocala Fl at the Hilton that I stayed at a couple of times. They have a Clydsdale there at the hotel that is there’s. He is stable in back. They have treats in the gift shop for you to get for him. This is too cute. They have some little muffin like cookies and I carried him some. He loved them. Don’t remember what they were called but they sure were a hit with him. Bet Charlie and GiGi will love them. just too cute.

Yes, Charlie does love them and I think Gigi will too. Here is the add from their website. Maybe they’ll look familiar to you. Love the name. Hugs, JB

Judy, Trina, That does look like what I gave Buddy. Something that is too cute too. When I was staying there the lady at the front desk aked me if I had gone back to see Buddy as we were talking about horses. i told her no I hadn’t been to see him yet. They did carriage rides on the weekends but this was like on a Monday so I hadn’t seen him. She told me to go out back and see him so I started out that next morning to see him. Well they had some building going on back there looked like they were planning maybe for a wedding back there as there was this big Gazebo there.
I sawa barn and a small pasture with a residence back there but I didn’t see any Clydesdale.. Further back was a pasture where I did see some horses. Well you know I treked along on back there. Started calling Buddy But, still I saw no Clydesdale. These horses were maybe TB’s. They were not even enterested in even coming to the fense they were way back and just enteresting in there munching grass. So I started back and I said he’s got to be in the first barn. Well I couldn’t see the front of that barn very well. But I got closer and started calling Buddy again. I was just a calling him. Finally I got close enough and guess who was sticking his head out around the corner. Alas Buddy………..I called him and he came over to see me. He enjoyed the treats so much. He stayed there visiting with me a long time. I asked him if he was asleep back there.
I guess those horses in the other pasture really thought who the heck is that calling and who is Buddy.
Was so glad I finally found him. Too Funny.
Max

RACING POST: GOLDIKOVA FOALS COLT BY GALILEO – INTERESTING DISCUSSION
OF GOLDI’S “FAMILY”.
(Freddy Head had a full brother to Goldi and Gadlikova in his barn –
Goldeo and his training him – can hardly wait to see him on the track)
Goldikova foals colt by champion sire Galileo
BY KATHERINE FIDLER 10:57AM 6 FEB 2013
OUTSTANDING triple Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Goldikova gave birth to a colt by Galileo at Coolmore on Sunday.
The foal is a first for the Wertheimer brothers’ eight-year-old, who won 17 races over five seasons, 14 of which came at the highest level.
Winning from seven to nine furlongs, the daughter of Anabaa amassed over £4 million during her career, becoming the first horse to win three Breeders’ Cup races in the process. Top colts to have been defeated by the champion mare include Gio Ponti, Paco Boy, Rajsaman, Dick Turpin and Henrythenavigator, while Goldikova herself only once finished out of the top three in 27 starts.
It is not the first time Galileo blood has been introduced to the family, Goldikova’s Group 1-winning sibling Galikova being by the four-time champion sire. The nick will be used again with Goldikova set to return to Galileo this season.
Freddie Head, who guided both Goldikova and Galikova throughout their careers, also has in his stable for the coming season a two-year-old brother to Galikova, Goldeo.
The trio are out of Born Gold, a Blushing Groom mare who has also produced the Group winners Gold Sound and Gold Round. Her sibling Gold Splash was trained by Head’s sister Criquette Head-Maarek to win the Prix Marcel Boussac and Coronation Stakes.
Born Gold will be covered by dual Australian champion sire Redoute’s Choice this season, who boasts an illustrious book of mares for his first visit to France, while her daughter Galikova is due to visit Dansili.

Good morning, all:
Speaking of horse treats, we have found MannaPro to be a good company. Our Money only gets healthy treats. He loves their Flax Snax, Hoof Snax, and Apple Treats. He adores his pears (thank you, Zenyatta, for the heads up on that one.!) and carrots too. We don’t call him “Mr. M. with the Munching Mouth” for nothing. (from an old Sesame Street song. Good day to all.

So happy to see on the Bloodhorse that Kentucky has upheld Rick Dutrow’s license suspension as did New York. He seems to be a very bad actor and it is good for racing if he is gone. Too bad for his brother who, it would appear, is a good and ethical trainer.

Brad Kelley to race, breed horses under Calumet Farm banner
by Paulick Report Staff | 02.06.2013 | 7:56am
Observant bettors may notice something a little different when Wine Glow enters the starting gate for Thursday’s seventh race at Oaklawn Park. The 3-year-old filly will still be trained by D. Wayne Lukas, and will be owned by Brad Kelley. However, instead of racing under the name Kelley’s Bluegrass Hall, Wine Glow will officially race for Calumet Farm.
Beginning Thursday, Kelley, who leases and operates the historic Lexington, Ky., nursery, will race all of his horses under the Calumet Farm banner. The name change will also go into effect for Kelley’s breeding operation; all horses bred will show the breeder as Calumet.
Kelley’s horses will still carry his familiar black and gold silks, however. The famous devil’s red and blue silks worn by countless Calumet champions in the past were purchased at auction in 1992 for $12,000 by a Brazilian businessman. They are now carried by Stud TNT’s horses.

Dominguez released from rehabilitation center, discusses his future plans
By David Grening Daily Racing Form 02/06/2013 10:35AM
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Ramon Dominguez talked slowly and thoughtfully, the way he often does when answering questions. He spoke quietly, respectfully, and occasionally wittingly.
Only this time, he wasn’t talking about his trip on a horse following a race, or about the accomplishments of another fabulous year that ended with an Eclipse Award.
He was talking about his health – literally his state of mind – and his desire to get healthy and ultimately back to doing what he does so well: riding race horses.

NO FILLY IN DERBY?
Derby Trail 2013 tweet
New @KentuckyDerby points system will likely leave Derby without a filly this year.
Currently no plans for filly to run in any KD preps.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
They’re just now figuring this out? IMO, it is one of the bigger flaws in the new points system.
carolinarkansas
read interesting analysis of new point system…something like..
7 races…winner get 100…they are in…second gets 40…got good chance to be in
….so 7 races could put 14 starters in derby
another 8 races…worth 50 points….winners of these eight could also be in…
….
now..same horses could win or place in these 15 races…but maybe not..
doesn’t give others much of a chance
..
girls have to run in boy races…no points for girl races
tracks “friendly” with Churchill got preference…
talks about “taking control”
seems like its about controlling who makes it to the starting gate
I just don’t know…
why could not all grade 3 yr old races get points…so all would have a chance?
carolinarkansas
that’s suppose to be “graded 3yr old races”
Keta
carolinarkansas & LauraJ
That is why I posted this.
It seems the way the points system is designed fillies have to choose between the Oaks or the Derby. At least, that’s the way I see it.
Hugs,
Keta
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Carol,
This “new” points system is very confusing as there are over 300 nominees
and only 20 “spaces”, there has to be more than points involved her
as you said lots and lots and lots of POLITICS.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
@Keta–thanks for the report on Ramon and the adorable foal pictures from Paddy O’Prado. I have one question, though, about the one out of Liberty Lyric. She appears to be a grey, and if I remember correctly, so is Paddy. Wouldn’t two greys normally produce a grey? I know the browns are dominant genes, but I’d like to hear an answer, since Zenny has a chance of having a grey by Pulpit. Thanks!
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dear Barbara, as I understand it, gray is a dominant gene, but only if at least one parent is homozygous for gray will a gray baby be assured. Diana Stuart shared this about Tapit:
“Tapit? He has sired chestnuts. So – – – class? That’s right, he’s carrying a red gene! He is not homozygous for red though. He is also not homozygous for gray because he has those solid color kids. So only when his single gray gene gets passed on will his kids be gray. Gray is a dominant gene. If you’ve got even one, you’ll be gray and that will “mask” your underlying coat color (red or bay).”
With good luck, Tapit WILL pass on one gray gene–then Z’s baby will be gray. Here’s hoping!
Keta
Trina
Thank You! I knew you were listening in class.
Paddy’s first foal of the year was a chestnut colt.
Hugs,
Keta

You are right that Paddy is a grey. Mom is a grey/roan
But, I am the wrong person to give info on horse color genetics.
Still working on the blue eyes/brown eyes in humans.

Barbara Wood (Texas)
Would be really neat! Thanks.

Dear Barbara.
Tapit’s supposedly grey offspring are usually colored as grey/roan; grey on top and roan or chestnut color underneath.

Thanks so much for sharing the trimming of Z12’s hoofs, he seems to be well behaved for the process. Z12 is looking real handsome and much like Zenyatta.
