Happy Wednesday!
This week has brought warm and sunny weather to Lane’s End, which means many happy horses!
12Z received a visit from the blacksmith yesterday, during which his feet were assessed and trimmed. He was quite the well behaved colt! Alys was there to document the occasion, so you can watch the whole process on video below.
Enjoy!

I don’t know much at all about horses, and I know that Zenyatta is very close to giving birth. However, she just looks so sad! Her winter coat looks unkempt, and, of course, she’s huge. But it’s her eyes! There’s no spark. Am I just reading too much into one picture?
zenyen
Yes, you’re reading way too much into that picture.
Zenyatta looks like a happy, healthy *horse*.
She is covered in mud because she’s had a night out with the girls (or at least a morning depending upon how cold it was) and has rolled to her heart’s content scratching all the itches. She is bundled up in NATURE’s natural blanket, her full winter coat which holds on to all that mud all the more. I pity her grooms who are going to but currying for a good hour, it tires the arm!
She looks like she was enjoying some grazing and got ‘whistled’ at to lift her head and ‘click’ so her expression is more ‘Hmm, interrupting breakfast here, oh it’s a photo op? Okay’.
Does she have the intensity of her on track ‘game face’? No and at this stage in her life she should NOT have that intensity. She is retired from racing, enjoying life as a healthy, pampered broodmare awaiting the arrival of her foal to lavish love on and teach, just as she did with Z12.

Thanks for the insights Zenyen. I feel like I’m barely out of preschool on all of this horse stuff :-)

I think it’s normal for her to look big, she’s exspected to be exspecting around Feb.28th. She better be huge. It looks like she was facing the wind, maybe that’s why her eyes are squinty a bit.

Remember Sunny B,
All of the pelvic organs/ligaments relax and the foal drops low in the abdomen
toward the end of the pregnancy. Relaxing of the parts allows the foal
to pass smoothly and quickly. Best of Luck to MaMa Z.

Dear Christine,
Horses don’t look kempt in the winter ever, they grow woolly winter coats to keep them
warm. The only thing that can be done to improve the look of a winter coat
is to clip it, not done to Broodmares and horses in general are not clipped in the
winter. They are clipped when the weather starts warming up.
She is sooo very happy and healthy and well taken care of, no longer that
competative in training warrior eye, now the eye of the soft and gentle mother.
Can hardly wait for your “grey/gray filly” ? Zenny.

Oh my goodness–isn’t this dangerous footing on the ice?
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Ann,
Riding in this sort of weather is so amazing. If I still lived in OHIO, I would be doing it.
The horses learn to walk in the snow and on the ice right? The Texas wind does
make ours a little loco here, have to watch the bucking, crowhopping and cold backs.
Having kept up with the UK weather and the chasing over their is unnerving to me.
Those jockey’s have nerves of steel along with Trainers and horse. Remember
wearing batter operated socks at the Browns football games in Cleveland, wonder
if they have batter operated riding boots????

I never knew this existed. It’s flats, harness and those guys were on ski’s with the horses pulling them. A little too risky for me. I worry about the horses, as Trina said, on icy surface. Hugs, JB

For those of you that thought so much of Obama’s inauguration speach, you should know where he stands on horse slaughter.
In late 2011, President Obama signed into law a broader bill that reverses the ban on the funding, leading to the possibility that horse slaughter would resume in the U.S. Federal legislation actually banning the process of horse slaughter has failed to pass Congress.

This is what gets to me, people saying, rather than have a horse starve, slaughter it. If no home can be found for one of Z’s unfortunate close or distant cousins, a bullet would work, too, and a proper burial. I saw old footage, the way these horses are treated even before they go to slaughter, it’s awful.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sunny B.:
There is no way to justify the brutality and pain of slaughter as a way to prevent the neglect of our beloved horses. You are right there are alternative methods that are humane like euthanasia by injection. First and foremost, I would rather see horses given a chance to be adopted to loving homes or retrained as therapy horses, hunter/jumpers, trail horses, etc. In the case of TB’s, would really help if more owners/breeders were willing to be responsible for where the horses are placed when they are through racing.
As for the Wild Ones; our National Treasures, if herds are continually being rounded up and prevented from breeding or worse killed, they are in danger of extinction. This has been going on for years in large part to satisfy the cattle ranchers who want the land for their own. Hugs, JB

A riddle…with the answer.
If anyone remembers my story about Billy Bob heading the wrong way on the interstate,,,,guess who turned the wrong way on a one way street in Denver today. That’s right…Moi. SCARY. I need to get out more, I think. Hubby may think I need to retire from driving.
I saw that there were so many names suggested for the Budweiser foal, that they named two foals. One is Hope and the other is Stan. Sorry, no link to provide.
Has anyone tried to get into the Zenyatta Shop in the past couple days? I wanted to check on the mugs to see if they are in stock, but I’m not able to get into the shop. Suggestions?
I saw on Face Book we have new winter pictures of Zenyatta by Alys coming tomorrow. The one in Face Book is glorious.

DAILY RACING FORM: CHAMPION GOLDIKOVA PRODUCES HER FIRST
FOAL A COLT BY GALILEO – will he meet 13 Z on the track
13 Goldikova and soon to be 13 Zenyatta !!!
02/05/2013 5:25PM
Champion Goldikova produces first foal, a colt by Galileo
By DRF Breeding Staff
Champion Goldikova produced her first foal on Feb. 3, a colt by Coolmore stallion Galileo.
Goldikova, a champion on two continents who won an unprecedented three consecutive editions of the Breeders’ Cup Mile, gave birth to her first foal on Sunday, Feb. 3, a colt by leading international sire Galileo.
The colt was born at Coolmore Stud in County Tipperary, Ireland.
An 8-year-old Anabaa mare foaled in Ireland and based in France for Alain and Gerard Wertheimer and trainer Freddie Head, Goldikova won 17 of 27 career starts, only finishing out of the top three once, while earning $7,176,551. Fourteen of her victories came in Grade or Group 1 events in three countries.
Goldikova made three successful raids on the U.S. during her racing career, winning the Breeders’ Cup Mile in 2008 and 2009 at Santa Anita—defeating defending champion Kip Deville in the former—before claiming the 2010 edition at Churchill Downs. That third victory, over three-time Eclipse Award winner Gio Ponti, made Goldikova the only horse to ever win three Breeders’ Cup races. Her attempt to add a fourth fell short when she finished third in the 2011 Mile at Churchill Downs in her final career start.
The Wertheimer homebred was a nine-time Group 1 winner in France, taking four consecutive editions of the Prix Rothschild at Deauville. She was also a multiple Group 1 winner in England, counting the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot among her victories.
Goldikova earned the Cartier Award as Europe’s champion older female in both 2009 and 2010, and won the Eclipse Award as North America’s top turf female the same years. Goldikova also won the Cartier Award as Europe’s Horse of the Year in 2010.
Goldikova is out of the winning Blushing Groom mare Born Gold, dam of 11 winners from 13 starters, including Group 1 winner Galikova, by Galileo. The mare’s other top runners include Group 3 winners Gold Round and Gold Sound, and Group 3-placed winners Born Something and Red Tune. Gold Round is the dam of two stakes winners, including Group 3 winner Goldwaki.

Goldikova’s First Foal Is a Colt
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Tuesday, February 5, 2013 5:55 PM
Alain and Gerard Wertheimer’s homebred champion Goldikova, the sole three-time Breeders’ Cup winner, produced her first foal, a colt by leading sire Galileo, Sunday, Feb. 3, at Coolmore Stud in Ireland, according to Coolmore’s Facebook page. The 8-year-old mare (Anabaa—Born Gold, by Blushing Groom) will be bred back to Galileo, who stands at Coolmore.

Dear Zenyen, Vicki b, Sign, and anyone elses name I have forgotten;
I came on today to see if anyone was able to respond to the happenings at the Horse Rescue….Sir, in particular. Thank you all so much. You have provided me with alot of knowledge.
Ever since Sir had arrived, and he was a horse that was left abondoned in a farm field, very skinny etc., he was the last horse to arrive here and he just seemed to take his place as the last one to be able and come to eat hay, even though we had at that time three outside feeders. The smallest mare would agressively chase him from every feeder. Sir sometimes went out aways into the beginning of the snow covered pasture. I could tell Jo to “stop” but I guess the horses deal with this on their own. I would, while the others were busy eating at the hay feeders, bring out a flake or two and drop it for Sir to eat on. Sometimes, Jo would notice and get Sir away from that hay!! So, as from what I read from your interesting “click ons” is that food is everything!! Perhaps with our Wisconsin weather getting so cold, Sir just had it, and his need and want for food, like “right now”, had his personality change with the other horses. No one was there when his dominance for being head of the herd occurred. But I have noticed the last two times, all he has to do, is approach a feeder with his ears back, and whatever horse is there, leaves quickly. They all are kind of afraid of him now. Anyone know if it will settle down?
I truly have appreciated any and all comments and I do love all these horses and only want what is good for all of them. I just have to be a little more careful now when Sir comes around and I am cleaning up poop outside, because that means another horse is suddenly getting away. Sir has not displayed any symptoms of colic, but he had fallen on his left side a month ago. We had a Vet come, he said he was very bruised. I hope it is nothing internal.
Anymore info is appreciated and I sure love your interest in sharing knowledge!
hugs, Sally B

SunnyB.
Scary stuff, huh? Hope every horse is going to be alright there.
SunnyB.
From what I read about food agression in horses, it’s best to feed the Sir by himself, so he won’t feel that his food is threatened, or feed him in his stall, and leave him alone while he’s eating. So he doesn’t feel there are any competitors for his food.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Sally B,
Sometime when rescued, they have “low self-esteem” for a better equine word,
other horses sense it and are protective of their food anyway. First who eats
is top of the pecking order.
Feeding him separate from the group initially is a good idea, so he gets his
food first, this also strengthens his position in the herd as they wait while
he eats. Interesting dynamics. A herd or group of animals, can outcast a
weak member and they can become weaker as they are not able to eat.
Great updates, Sunny B

Oaklawn Park notes: Borel still awaiting clearance from doctor
By Mary Rampellini Daily Racing Form 02/05/2013 4:16PM
Jockey Calvin Borel, who has not ridden since breaking a small bone in his left wrist the second week in January, is awaiting clearance from his doctor to return to the saddle. Borel was evaluated on Tuesday by his doctor, who asked him to come back next week for another assessment, said Jerry Hissam, the rider’s agent. Borel is one win shy of career victory 5,000. He was injured just prior to the start of the Oaklawn meet Jan. 11.
Hissam spent last week in the hospital, battling an infection of his pancreas. He said Tuesday that the infection was a complication from a gall bladder operation he had Dec. 27. Hissam also had heart bypass surgery in December. He has long been the agent for Borel, a three-time winner of the Kentucky Derby
