Happy Wednesday!
This week has brought warm and sunny weather to Lane’s End, which means many happy horses!
12Z received a visit from the blacksmith yesterday, during which his feet were assessed and trimmed. He was quite the well behaved colt! Alys was there to document the occasion, so you can watch the whole process on video below.
Enjoy!

DAILY RACING FORM: MMM TO SIT OUT THE DONN AND HEAD FOR THE GULFSTREAM HANDICAP – no injury
02/02/2013 3:42PM
Gulfstream Park: Mucho Macho Man will sit out Donn Handicap
By Mike Welsch
Mucho Macho Man, eased as the odds-on favorite in the Sunshine Millions Classic, will not run in Saturday’s Grade 1 Donn Handicap.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Mucho Macho Man, the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up, will not run in the Grade 1 Donn Handicap, trainer Kathy Ritvo confirmed on Saturday.
Mucho Macho Man was eased through the stretch by jockey Mike Smith as the odds-on favorite when making his 2013 debut in the Sunshine Millions Classic two weeks ago. Ritvo said Mucho Macho Man came out of the race with no apparent physical issues and he was able to resume normal training 48 hours later, although he has yet to work since then.
“After considering the Donn as an option, we’ve decided to pass,” Ritvo said. “It just does not fit as well into our long-term objectives for Mucho Macho Man.”
The only major dirt race remaining on the 2013 stakes schedule for older horses here this season is the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Handicap on March 9. Mucho Macho Man defeated Tackleberry and Jackson Bend to capture the 2012 Gulfstream Handicap.
Despite Mucho Macho Man’s absence, the Donn is coming up a strong race with a field of at least seven possible, led by Flat Out, Take Charge Indy, and Csaba. Others pointing for the 1 1/8-mile Donn are Pool Play, Bourbon Courage, Ultimate Eagle, and Citrus Kid.
Csaba, winner of the Grade 3 Hal’s Hope on Jan. 13, and Take Charge Indy both turned in their final tune-ups for the Donn on Saturday. Csaba breezed an easy half-mile in 50.60 seconds at Calder, while Take Charge Indy posted a bullet four furlongs in 47.02 at Palm Meadows.

Golden Gate Fields: Jockey Mangalee injured, one horse euthanized following spill
By Chuck Dybdal Daily Racing Form 02/03/2013 6:03PM
Jockey Navin Mangalee sustained a fractured right clavicle and minor concussion when his mount in Sunday’s sixth race at Golden Gate Fields, Thirsty for More, clipped heels with Blast the Cat and fell in the stretch.
Black Mango fell over the fallen horse, but his rider, Jose Delgadillo, escaped injury. Black Mango fractured his front right leg and had to be euthanized.
Mangalee was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland for a precautionary CT Scan. There was no report of any injuries sustained by Thirsty for More.
Blast the Cat, ridden by Pedro Flores, drifted in and had his heels clipped. He continued on and finished third but was disqualified and placed last.

The oldest rescue at SHERR, Bing, has died. He passed on about an hour ago. He came to SHERR thin and cranky. I got to brush and love on him many times in my time as a volunteer. He passed on about 300lbs heavier and surrounded by friends. He and Tessa can now tango together in the Great Pasture. Good bye old friend.

Dear Louise,
Found this article in The Horse on contracted tendons,
seems like it is common. Let me know if you are unable
to read it. Coli Bear and her colt are too funny. She is raising
her lip, either he is stressing her out or she is trying to find him with
her scenting as he is everywhere. They are too cute.

Louise Castello
Sign, Thank you so much for this. I was able to read it and it made me feel a whole lot better. I’m hoping they will let us see him up and about very soon. That Coli Bear foal is so cute and ready to run. He is going to be a handful!
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Louise,
Coli Bear is on watch over her foal, he is sleeping, bet she is glad.
Watching is less work than chasing him around. Remember 12 Z
running the paddock from one end to the other, trying to get Zenny to
chase him. Must be a common foal and mom game.
Yes, the ending of the article was good. Some of these things
happen commonly, and the Foaling staff are so good a finding them.
I think they suspected, when the foals front feet were out before
she delivered the rest.
I have to work tomorrow, so keep me posted. You too, Janet.
Janet Newman
Louise and Sign,
The folks there will update us on 13 Rockcide and while we may not get to follow on the cam, they certainly are very good and letting us know how he is doing.
I imagine Coli Bear and her foal will move out of the foaling barn tomorrow.
He is a handful.

Dear Janet,
Thanks for the information.
I am going to upgrade to get the daily news.
So if you get any please post it on the stablemates

What do you think about the mares raising their
upper lip in labor and after delivery? Saw Zenny
do it in the video they made when all what “cuddling”
with 12 Z. Maybe this question has been asked on
the Winstar site before.

Dear Cheryl,
12 Z feet are doing great, he has the best farrier’s in all of KY.
Just have to make sure they are trimmed properly so they watch
him walk and file off the parts of his hooves they need so they are
even and he has a normal gait.
Commonly horses that are “barefoot” get cracks and nicks in their
hooves. He gets his hooves trimmed every 6 weeks.

Verrazano – The No. 1 Kentucky Derby contender
The Miami Herald > Sports > Horse Racing Posted on Monday, 02.04.13
By Sports Network
Stakes winners usually get more publicity than allowance and maiden winners, and that was certainly the case over the weekend with the stellar victories by Flashback and Revolutionary.
However, the No. 1 star was not the Robert B. Lewis champion (Flashback) nor the Withers hero (Revolutionary). It was a non-winners of one allowance winner by the name of Verrazano.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Verrazano destroyed a field of five at Gulfstream Park this past Saturday winning by 16 1/4 lengths while running the mile in exactly 1:34 4/5.
The 1-5 favorite sat second for the first half-mile, just as he did when he broke his maiden on New Year’s Day. The January foal then flew past the early pacesetter and quickly opened a 6 1/2-length lead with only a furlong remaining. He almost tripled that lead in the final eighth of a mile while under a hand ride from jockey John Velazquez.

FIRST FUTURE WAGER
Don’t forget, the first Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool will be held on Feb. 8-10. There will be 23 single entrants and the rest of the horses will be lumped in the field.
I fully expect the first 10 of my Dirty Dozen to be single entrants. Other probables include Oxbow, Falling Sky, Bern Identity, Frac Daddy, Delhomme, Dewey Square, Den’s Legacy, Vyjack, Power Broker, Dynamic Sky, He’s Had Enough, Will Take Charge and Mylute.
As of early February, the only horses I think who have a realistic chance to win the Kentucky Derby are Verrazano, Normandy Invasion, Flashback, Violence, Itsmyluckyday and Overanalyze. When betting the first Future Wager make sure the odds of your key selections are higher than what they might be on Derby Day. Otherwise, hold onto your money until later in the spring.
THE JEFF FRANK “DIRTY DOZEN”
1) Verrazano – Moves right to the top after devastating win
2) Normandy Invasion – Will have two starts before Derby
3) Flashback – Easy win versus little in Robert B. Lewis
4) Violence – Lost in the shuffle after Verrazano’s victory
5) Itsmyluckyday – Florida Derby next for Holy Bull winner
6) Overanalyze – Continues to prep for the Gotham Stakes
7) Shanghai Bobby – Questionable at Derby distance
8) Goldencents – San Felipe at Santa Anita is next
9) Revolutionary – Solid win in Withers despite low Beyer
10) Uncaptured – Still a month away from first 2013 start
11) Palace Malice – Has license to improve
12) Orb – A stakes appearance is on the horizon

Next stop Big ‘Cap for Game On Dude
The Miami Herald > Sports > Horse Racing Posted on Monday, 02.04.13
By Sports Network
Sunday’s dominating victory by Game On Dude in the San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita reestablished the gelding as the leading handicap horse on the West Coast. The 6-year-old’s 6 1/2-length win places him squarely as the favorite for the Santa Anita Handicap (Big ‘Cap) on March 2.
“This is an extremely talented horse, he might even be better this year. I’ve never ridden him last year but I ran against him a few times. The feeling he gave me today was even more so than when I first rode him,” said Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith after the San Antonio.
Trained by Bob Baffert, Game On Dude will be returning to the Big ‘Cap after a year’s absence. He won the race in 2011, but last year was sent to the Dubai World Cup where he finished a disappointing 12th. The gelding won last year’s San Antonio prior to Dubai.

Racing Post Q & A with Dan Skelton, Assistant Trainer to Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls Monday Feb. 4 2013 via Twitter
Q Will any of Paul’s horses be going with you when you start training from your own yard?
A No, will be doing my job until May then will look for my own owners. I’m confident I can hopefully attract a few
Q How did you first get into horse racing?
A Obviously my father had racehorses with David Nicholson which inspired a lot of interest. Then landed dream job at Paul’s & grew from there.
Q Any horses you feel will be better suited by Aintree than Cheltenham?
A We have fancied JOIN TOGETHER at the Festival the last twice but he showed a preference for the fences at Aintree in the Becher
Q whats your banker of the festival apart from SPRINTER SACRE?
A FLEMENSTAR in the Ryanair if he runs in that. If not then will have to be QUEVEGA in the Mares’ Hurdle
Q DENMAN and KAUTO STAR the Best Horses you have worked with?
A Both unique but impossible to split in head and heart. Personality-wise DENMAN was a grumpy beast whilst KAUTO STAR loved the camera
Q u got an idea who might be your stable jockey or someone who you would want? Even if aren’t available! And why?
A My brother Harry will be integral to the team and he is the obvious starting point
Q dan do u think WONDERFUL CHARM can step up to the plate and challenge for the world hurdle?
A Possibly yes but we would need to get a run into him
Q in your opinion who is the best novice hurdler in the yard?
A On ratings it has to be DODGING BULLETS and hard to argue otherwise when you look at his form
Q ZARKANDER was staying on very well last year hopefully he can get closer this year. Has he improved?
A He is in a much better place both physically and health-wise. He’s got to have a great chance in the CH but it’s a really strong race
Q chances of LAC FONTANA winning the triumph hurdle?
A There’s always a chance. His jumping is very good now and we’re looking forward to running him at the Festival
Q How is MASTER MINDED getting on?
A He is in full retirement and is happy as Larry. Tessa Woodhouse is taking great care of him and he is as big as a bull!
Q Will you consider training any flat horses in the future or just concentrate soley on NH horses?
A I will have a dual licence as the opportunities to run on the flat could arise. My brother has worked for Richard Hannon & would be an asset
Q Given today’s sad events, how does a yard cope with the loss of a horse? Presumably it never gets any easier. (Keta Note: See story on Darlan below)
A It doesn’t get any easier and never will. It’s a massive upset to everyone as we all care so much and it’s a time to stick together
Q If you cud train any horse in the world, who would it be and why?
A BLACK CAVIAR because she never loses
Q hi there where are we likely to see JUST A PAR next? Nice recruit to the yard
A Entered this Sunday at Exeter in a novice hurdle
Q if you could think or dream stable for your 1st season who would be in it?
A Can I answer that after the Festival!?
Keta
One more Q & A with Dan Skelton
Q How is BIG BUCKS rehabilitation from injury?. Such a legend over hurdles
A He’s on the horse walker now and will continue on that until he gets turned out in summer and then should resume training after that
