Happy Wednesday!
This week has brought warm and sunny weather to Lane’s End, which means many happy horses!
12Z received a visit from the blacksmith yesterday, during which his feet were assessed and trimmed. He was quite the well behaved colt! Alys was there to document the occasion, so you can watch the whole process on video below.
Enjoy!

Hey, exalted members of the Redneck Club! Just found this on Facebook, a photo of a “Redneck Fire Alarm”: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=494416263955991&set=a.449191051811846.112612.271199529611000&type=1&theater
Don’t know if you all can see it, or would have to login, so I better explain it:
It’s a store-bought aluminum pie-pan of Jiffy pop, hanging on a nail in the wall almost at ceiling level.

good find Vicki B…..just one problem…but the time this alarm goes off….we would all be…wait for it….”toasted”….
….
one thing about popcorn….I used it long ago as a “spur” when I worked on ortho..
we had lots of young men with back or knee surgeries…none of whom wanted to get up and walk….so at 2 or 3 am…we would pop some corn…the smell was mouthwatering…and sure enough….lights would come on all up and down the hall….
everyone wanted some….so….if they wanted it….they had to get up and walk to the nurses station to pick it up….the docs could not figure out how come the patients started doing better in physical therapy…just because they were doing more walking in general helped….filed that under…whatever works
…..
Good Morning Zenny…..how is your lovely self today? hope you are well…do you have snow in your pasture too…Cigar’s is a whiteout…think he might be on “house arrest” ..has not been out in a couple of days that I could find..please continue to take care of yourself and little soon-to-be Z13…kisses
….
BigManZ….be careful in the snow…when you and your buds are out…I know that white is fun to play in…but it can be a problem..run and continue to grow … you are going to be one very big boy…love you
….
happy superbowl day to all

Dear Carol,
“toasted”, too funny – you are really catching on to that RN Arkansas humor.
You and your ortho crew are ingenious, popcorn smell to get those young
guys moving – and that can be a real feat. Nothing more challenging that
a young injured male who does not want to move.
Amazing the Superbowl already !!!!

D got him through, the heart of a true champion AP INDY and now
Revolutionary has that COURAGE AND HEART OF AP INDY.

BLOODHORSE: 369 HORSES EARLY TRIPLE CROWN NOMINEES –
(the list is included with 7 fillies)
369 Horses Are Early Triple Crown Nominees

2-year-old Champion Shanghai Bobby heads the list of Triple Crown nominees.
Order This Photo
Led by 29 nominees from trainer Todd Pletcher, 369 horses were designated for the 2013 Triple Crown series prior to the Jan. 26 deadline for early nominations at a cost of $600 each.
This year’s total of early nominees is down from the 398 horses made eligible during the early phase in 2012. Twenty more horses were added to the 2012 roster during the Triple Crown’s late nomination phase, which lifted the final total to 418.
The late nomination period, which requires the payment of a $6,000 fee with each nominee, ends March 23 at 11:59 p.m. (EST).
View a complete, sortable list of the nominees.
The Triple Crown starts with the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands May 4 and is followed by the May 18 Preakness Stakes and June 8 Belmont Stakes, all grade I.
The roster of nominees is headed by Starlight Racing, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith’s Shanghai Bobby, the 2-year-old champion of 2012 and winner of the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I). Trained by Pletcher, Shanghai Bobby was upset by early Triple Crown nominee Itsmyluckyday in the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) in his first start of 2013.
Pletcher, who won the 2010 Derby with Super Saver and the 2007 Belmont with the filly Rags to Riches, is also represented Violence, winner of the CashCall Futurity (gr. I) and Nashua Stakes (gr. III); Overanalyze, winner of the Remsen (gr. II) and Belmont Futurity (gr. II); and the filly Dreaming of Julia, winner of the Frizette Stakes (gr. I).
Other accomplished 2013 Triple Crown nominees include Uncaptured, He’s Had Enough, Goldencents, and Oxbow. He’s Had Enough and Goldencents are both trained by Doug O’Neill, who won the 2012 Derby with I’ll Have Another. Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who is tied with Sunny Jim Fizsimmons with 13 victories in Triple Crown races, trains Oxbow.
Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who has saddled the winners of eight Triple Crown races, has a team of nominees headed by Power Broker, winner of the Frontrunner Stakes (gr. I).
Bluegrass Hall and Mary and Gary West each nominated seven horses to the Triple Crown to lead in total nominations by owners, either alone or in partnership. Darley Stable was next with six nominees. Charles Fipke, Alex and John Lieblong, Oxley, Kaleem Shah Inc., West Point Thoroughbreds, and WinStar Farm nominated five horses each.
Immediately behind Pletcher among trainers was Baffert, who trains 23 early nominees to the Triple Crown races. Ken McPeek and Nick Zito are next with 13 each, while Mark Casse and Lukas each designated 11 3-year-olds.
The leading breeders of 2013 Triple Crown nominees, either alone or in partnership, are Darley and Edward P. Evans, each of whom bred seven of the Triple Crown-eligible horses. Close behind are Ken and Sarah Ramsey and William S. Farish with six nominees. Diamond A. Racing Corp. and Fipke each bred five nominees.
Nine nominated horses are based outside of North America, including four from the stable of Ireland’s Dermot Weld. Top Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien trains a pair of nominees.
The overall total of 369 Triple Crown nominees includes 325 colts. Along with the seven fillies, the remaining nominees include 28 geldings and nine ridglings.
The United States was the birthplace of 352 nominated horses. Of those, 263, or 71.3%, were born in Kentucky. Seventeen nominees were bred outside of the U.S. borders, headed by the 11 bred in Canada.
The Kentucky Derby field has been limited to 20 starters since 1975 and the horses that enter the starting gate for this year’s running will be determined for the first time by points earned in the new “Road to the Kentucky Derby” eligibility system. The field for the Preakness is limited to 14 starters, while the Belmont Stakes permits a maximum field of 16 horses.
In addition to the two nomination periods, there is a final opportunity to become eligible for Triple Crown competition through a supplemental nomination. That process involves the payment of a fee, due at the time of entry for the Derby, Preakness, or Belmont that makes the horse eligible to run in the remaining races of the Triple Crown series. A supplemental nomination made at the time of entry for the Kentucky Derby requires a fee of $200,000, and the fee drops $100,000 if paid prior to either the Preakness or the Belmont Stakes

Dear Janet, Louise and Laura J,
Coli Bear’s little colt is sooo cute. He is running around in the stall,
like 12 Z did. She looks so happy with her new little one, no longer
in labor and munching away. They are having cute little nuzzling
bonding moments.
Rockside defiately looks ready, hope I don’t miss this one.
How very much fun this is. Thanks so much to you for
keeping company and with all of the other on the Stablemates site.
A great prep for 13 Z’ entry into the world.
Louise Castello
Sign, Coli Bear seems to really love that baby. She licks her as much as Zenyatta licked 12Z. So very sweet!
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
TOO CUTE !!! Louise
Rocksides foaling went well and she has a lovely little one. She keep on looking back at her foal after he was born. Like the way they clean the foal and
let the mare scent off the towel. Very thoughtful group, how can you
not be working with these lovely mares and foals.
Louise Castello
Sign, did you see that they took the foaling cam down in Rockcide’s stall? The baby has contractures of tendons in front legs and they’ve splinted them but are bottle feeding him. I understand why they took the cam down because of problems. And I saw he is a Bernardini colt. Poor Rockcide, I hope all will be okay. Wonder how serious a problem this is?
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Louise,
Yes, I saw. The Winstar foaling staff are wonderful.
Maybe a fairly commonly seen problem?
Prayers for Rockside and her lovely colt. They say
he will be up and and about in a few days.
I thought it was Bernardini colt, too. Will look up
the percentage of this problem.
Wasn’t he a cute little boy??? And Coli Bear’s son
reminds me of 12 Z all over the stall. Love it when
they look to nurse between the front legs and are
guided to the back ones. The foals don’t realize
there are 4 legs.
Not sure I will be up tonight, so keep me posted.

Dear Zenny Fans,
Looks like Mr. Besilu is back in training at Payson Park Training Center in Fla.
Below is an equibase work on 1/27/2013; no listed trainer etc… Maybe Bill

Greek is mentioned on the Payson Park Training Center. Mr. Besilu pedigree:
Balance, AP Indy.

Equibase on Mr. Besilu:
http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Results.cfm?type=Horse&refno=8553573®istry=T
He was in training with TP, today on HRTV – Jeff Siegel was commenting today that
TP does not put much time into them if they don’t have racing ability right away.
Where as some of the top trainers are more patient. So maybe he will be
having an additional training and be on the track later in the year.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
It’s a strange situation, isn’t it? I’ve always figured Mr. B was injured or something. It is hard to believe he lacks racing ability, given his pedigree. And I’m sure Benjamin Leon didn’t spend $4.2 million on him to have him languish in a barn without good reason. Anyway, I was pleased to get his workout notice. I hope whoever has him is patient, This is his first work in over a year.
Another AP Indy guy I follow, Take Control, had a leisurely work on Jan 31. It was described as “handily,” but the Santa Anita clocker describes everything as handily.

Dear Laura J,
Yes, very interesting. Hopefully he will be coming back.
Agree with your comment him, too.
Remember Rags to Riches first foal was injured in training
and has not been named or on the track yet.
Love Take Control, he is a great horse and appreciate
your comment about “handily”, wondered why it was used so much.
Will put him in my Virtual Stable. Love to keep an eye out for those AP Indy’s too. He may be pensioned but his mares will keep producing,
didn ‘t think of that until looking up Long River’s pedigree – AP Indy Dam.
Thanks for the great insight.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Judy B,
Love that comment. Really hope he makes a come back.
Zenyen
Rags to Riches first foal, a filly who has not raced due to injury while training, is named Opulence.
http://www.pedigreequery.com/opulence9
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
At this point I will be surprised if Opulence ever makes it to the track. With her pedigree, she has great value as a broodmare. She’s four years old–late to start racing, but good for a first breeding. In fact, I keep expecting to read that she’s been booked to someone expensive.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Zenyen,
Great find, love the name.
I was wondering the same thing Laura J.
Wonderful pedigree and maybe more valuable to
be a broodmare, particularly since her “mom” is

preliminary last foaling.
Breeding around March 24, 2012; Approximate foaling date – February 28, 2013
Today Zenny is approximately 300 days in foal.

A lot of comment but very little info. Nby explained the reasons for Sir’s expressions, what does it mean if a horse lifts its upper lip exposing upper front teeth ? What did occur between the herd, could have occured? Rather than pulling stuff off online already posted, how about some real meaty stuff about horses, behavior, oddness, how it can be corrected etc. Oh, Barbara Wood, I left a response under your comment on “Barney” The former White House dog.

Zenyen, thank you so much for another informative post and link on horsey behavior. My lesson for today; the next time I see Charlie or one of the other horses doing that, I’ll know what it means. Love and Hugs, JB
Louise Castello
Very interesting. I’ve seen mares do that right after foaling. Are they trying to smell the foals better?
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Looks like most of the time what looks like the flehman response is normal & healthy. But another piece on flehman at Kentucky Equine Research, that says “Actions similar to flehman (raised head, extended neck, curled lip or yawning motions)” can mean several other things (e.g., colic, throat irritation, stress, or anxiety), so “owners should keep an eye on a horse that begins to show ANY signs that are out of that horse’s normal pattern”, and ask a vet.

Dear Sunny B,
Great question, seems like the mares in labor and after foaling do this.
Zenyatta did it right after foaling 12 Z and Ann was cuddling him.
Perhaps she was senting him as hers.
Maybe the mares in labor are signaling “stress”.
Great links by Zenyen and Vicki B. Horse behavior needs to be taken
into context and according to sex; breeding stallion would be scenting
a mare, mare in labor/foaling maybe senting foal.
SunnyB.
As you said, Zenyatta did it after her colt was born, and her “Mom” was visiting her and was holding her Little Prince’s head on her lap, It is called “flehmen”, facilitating the transfer of pheromones into the olfactory organ. But then I came across sthg that some horses also do this when colicking? But it definitely does not mean “Lookie here what I’ve done”. It’s not pride. Cats kinda do this when they want to really identify a scent, they’ll open their mouth partly and hold it that way for a couple of minutes. Cats do flehmen, too.

Black Caviar captivates Caulfield in Australian return (Pre-Race Video)
Glenn McFarlane From:Herald Sun February 03, 201312:00AM
FOR Peter Moody, it wasn’t about time. It was all about temperament.
And after watching Black Caviar push herself through one of the most publicised exhibition gallops in Australian racing, along with a big gathering of fans, racing aficionados and even a racegoer who had flown in from the US, the trainer had little doubt that his champion was back in town. Literally.
In her first major public performance since a courageously nail-biting Golden Jubilee win at Royal Ascot 224 days ago, the majestic mare yesterday charmed Caulfield – her home track.
Importantly, she convinced her trainer and connections that the problems she experienced in England were now half a world away.

Sizing Europe imperious in Tied Cottage Chase (VIDEO)
By David Baxter Racing Post.com 2:33PM 3 FEB 2013
Report: Punchestown, Sunday
Boyelsports.com Tied Cottage Chase (Grade 2) 2m, 5yo+
SIZING EUROPE remained unbeaten for the season following a straightforward victory under Andrew Lynch. It was a second consecutive win in the Tied Cottage for Henry de Bromhead’s chaser and the 11-year-old demonstrated that he still has plenty to offer in whichever Cheltenham Festival race connections opt for.

Trina, left a response to your question regarding Cisco on page 9. Thank you so much for asking about him…….he is my love.
Laura J, I too have Mr. Besilu, Take Charge Indy and Take Control in my virtual stable and am closely watching them. I did read a while back Mr. Besilu and Take Control had been sidelined with injuries…..so glad to hear they are finally coming back. Also, Stephanoatsee (Shaks half Bro) ran really well yesterday even though he was pushed five wide around the final turn, he did come on late to take second. TVG commentators agreed he looked like a million bucks on the track. He’s a beautiful blood bay with a bold white face!! Hope Graham Motion can get the best out of him.
Some really greats wins yesterday for Tapit kids. Papa Pulpit and Gr Grandpa Indy must be so proud. Can’t wait wait to see Zen’s new baby and EARnie hit the training track. We’ve got so much to look forward to. Hugs to all

Keta. Paynter is looking exceptionally good, having gained back that lost weight. Love his blanket. Paynter has a big collection of blankets like our Z. Z and Paynter are stylish clothes horses. Thanks for this.

Max,
It’s an incredible time for being a horse. The world of stylish horse blankets/accessories is ” off the charts”.
You can even get blankets w/ matching doggie coats.
Driving by the fields and seeing all the colorful, whimsical and stylish horses puts a smile on my face. We are diggin a cheetah print this winter!
Thankyou,Keta.
I love him too,Judy B!

@Sunny Boyd–I just located your earlier comment to me. I am glad they are doing research on cancer in Goldens. It is about time! It is too late for our Isabella (Izzie), but perhaps it will help others. I hope it is not related to their dog food. Our Izzie was the runt of the litter, an obedience school flunkout, a traffic-stopper and conversation starter with her good looks, and was known to sneak out at night and come home for breakfast. But she was also the only one of her litter not badly affected by hip dysplasia. I just wish we had known then what we know now about dogs.
RIP to both sweet girls, yours and mine!
I am constantly amazed at the things I learn on this blog! Thanks and hugs.
SunnyB.
I’m glad you did, I didn’t know if you still had a goldie or not, anyway I think this is excellent to find a cure or for the prevention of cancer in dogs, hopefully not too far into the future. Right now , my Marmelade is dealing with Cushings, actually she was diagnosed 5 1/2 yrs ago, she is 15 yrs old now. A fairly large dog. Ever since her diagnosis I started cooking for her. She does not get commercial dog food. I really truly believe that getting everything fresh, no cornfillers, no preservatives is helping her. Her vet can’t get over how well she’s doing. She is also on meds every day.

I agree. Sprinter Sacre is extraordinary.
But, this 11 year old still gets the job done.

Sheena. Could you let us know when Kind has her foal? JudyB and I and maybe others are interested in this family. The forthcoming foal by Galileo will be a full sibling to Frankel and Noble Mission, three quarters to Bullet Train.
BTW Bullet Train seems to be adjusting well to his new home. He’s already got a fan club, an assistant and his own Facebook page. January 27 was his personal 6th birthday. Looks like Bullet Train is coming into his own. He mentioned that he loves bluegrass.

Game On Dude took some heat for six furlongs, then sped away in the stretch to take the $196,000 San Antonio Stakes (gr. II) (VIDEO) as expected Feb. 3 for his sixth win in seven tries at Santa Anita Park.
Just three overmatched opponents challenged the four-time grade I winner, who was sent off as the 1-20 favorite in his 6-year-old seasonal debut. Ridden by Mike Smith, the gelded son of Awesome Again completed the 1 1/8-mile test in a solid 1:47.53 over a fast track on Super Bowl Sunday, winning by 6 1/2 lengths.
