Constellation is another good one in this race. Really excited about her as I met her in person (horse) while she was at horse school in Florida. She is a lover!
Sandy,
I will have to check out Constellation. With a name like that her owner must have thought she was going to be a star. Gotta say I will have to pull for her to place as I just adore Valentina. Above all. Safe trip to these sweet babies.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
We think the name came from the fact that she has little tiny white spots all over her – like stars? I’ll figure out a way to post her picture.
Lauraj,
Thanks for the information. Hope it is televised. Sure hope she can win and get in. Although don’t know if she will have enough experience to go in the BC. But all of them will be just babies.
Oh wow! Time for the nerves to start twitching again! I swear, I am now attached to so many horses I am constantly a nervous wreck! It’s all Zenyatta and Rachels fault and then add in American Pharoah and Wise Dan and Texas Red and California Chrome! I am waaaay too old for this much stress!
Know how you feel pam. Swore off racing when Barbaro left us and then along came Rachel and Zenyatta and I had the bug again. Now, like you, I am a wreck and living on Tums before so many of them race. Although I am happy that Mucho Macho Man retired sound as well as Palace Malice, I will miss both of them but not the quivering stomach. Gotta admit it is worth the worry when they come home safely and really nice when it is capped off with a win.

Oh same here. I saw Ruffian’s disaster and that broke my heart, then started watching again, then Barbaro and Eight Belles – aaacckkkkkk –
Zenyatta overcame my fears and doubts. She is just such magic.

Agree with shirlee and Sophia. Ruffian was my first real encounter with heartbreak and then I think Go For Wand BC. I had been out of town the day of that Breeders Cup so didn’t watch the replay till late at night! If I remember correctly there were several breakdowns that day and I was having a terrible time! Was wishing there had been a warning or something. Then my beautiful Barbaro and Eight Belles. Sigh…… Thank heavens Zenyatta and Rachel made it to retirement in good shape! Although I don’t stress quite so much when the older horses are running. Their bones seem to be in much better shape the older they get. However they still have accidents! Two year olds are the ones I really worry about! After Eight Belles one can’t even relax until they are pulled up and actually walking back.

Have you seen any of the videos of Butterstick the Sequel posted on the National Zoo’s Facebook page? They are in the visitor’s posts and they are ADORABLE! The little man’s black markings have come in, and he’s as fat as he can be. Mei actually put him down on the floor for 10 minutes today, so she could eat a stalk of sugar cane. He was calm, but boy did he grumble about being on the floor! He is very, very spoiled!

Dear Deb E.Thanks for the heads-up about the video. The little one is growing so fast!I was watching mama washing him last night. He’s spotless!Hugs Sheena.
Sandy,
Thanks for the pics of Constellation. I can see where she got her name. Looks like a real sweetheart or did you put mints and carrots behind your ears?
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
No – we didn’t have enough brains to take treats. It was all her :-)

Happy Belated Birthdays to Marty R. and to JAG’s mother, Ramona. Hope both had a lovely day, full of happiness and fun. (Thanks Sandy for the heads-up on Marty’s birthday)
Dear Judy B.,
Bailey and Smudge are getting along just great! Bailey is the sweetest most patient creature ever — she allows Smudge to do just about anything. He chases after her and, of course, cannot catch her; however, she eventually lets him grab on to her for a good wrestling match (they like wrassling!). They play hard, and Smudge gets underfoot often which causes Bailey to take a tumble, but she is up and away quickly. Sometimes she just goes down so he can crawl all over with lots of mouthing by each dog. They are great buddies. My very own Mutt and Jeff pair!
Thanks for asking about them. They always make me smile and very often make me giggle uncontrollably.
Hugs and Love to you and Lola Mae
The need for security can create an uneasy nest. Where do we go? What do we do? But the most unholy of questions is, “Where did I fail?”
Change does not mean failure. It means upheaval and it means trial and effort, but it does not mean failure. Anger about change means we have not thought it through, we have not looked beyond the limits, beyond the perimeter of what is familiar.
The biggest problem is that the ones who instigate it are not the ones that make the change. But those who make the change will eventually find it was the best thing that ever happened. It brought out new strengths and new thinking and the knowledge that security is not in other people-but in ourselves.

Dear Kathy.I have never dealt well with change in my life.I have always, and, perhaps been used to a routine. It’s quite cool here today Monty is still with us peacefully taking in his surroundings.Blue must be around too.You beat me to it with the question for Mr Alex!I loved the pups question!Katybug has put on a little weight so her phenobarbital has been upped. She was a little unsteady last night but alright.I had my Gizmo calendar today beautiful pics of him and they visited Lara yesterday in her new home she looks so happy!Did you see Chris the sheep in Australia with all that wool?Bless him they had to sedate him before shearing him but he recovered well. Will be thinking of Wookie tomorrow and hope all goes well for him.Gosh,Ray and his mama have the same sort of hairstyle.Wimbley was testing the peas but I always loved the PS dis is Marty messages.Watched an interesting programme about the ‘blitz’ the bombing started in Wales in 1941 Swansea and Cardiff docks suffered the most. Some sad tales but, boy, they had a spirit you don’t see much these days.Have a great Friday Eve.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.SheenaXOXO
I think most people resist change. The Native Americans put an interesting spin on it. Monty will be leaving pretty soon I would think. Safe travels, Monty! Can’t wait for Mr. Alex’s answers to all those questions. Should be fun! Glad to hear Katybug is alright. A Gizmo calendar! That’s great! So glad Lara seems happy. I did see that poor sheep. He must feel so much better now! I will be relieved when Wookie’s surgery is over. Praying everything goes well. Speaking of surgeries, my aunt’s hip replacement surgery will be Tuesday morning. So please remember her in your prayers, too. Loved the sweet pic of Ray and his mom. The pea testers pic was cute. I agree, the PS dis is Marty messages are always endearing. I think the population back in the 40s were a much tougher breed than we see today. Have a happy Friday Eve. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXO
American Pharoah is to carry on racing!!His main target will,of course, be the Breeders cup classic.Should be a great race. Not sure if he will have a prep run.Sheena.
Happy to be back and feeling much better. Little dog is a riot. How can I not feel that he is a gift sent from God to lift me from the doldrums. He got me up and out of the house for some much needed exercise. We play catch. I throw the ball, he chases the ball, then he runs off with the ball and I hurry after him. I can easily imagine a day that every horse in the starting gate is the offspring of one of the horses I have come to love. How fast the year is passing. It seems like only yesterday I was watching AP racing in Arkansas.
Dear Vicki. So happy you are feeling better. There’s nothing better than a pet to get you out of the house. Why is it the older we get time seems to fly!Hugs Sheena.
Dear Vicki,
Great news that you are feeling better! So happy about the little dog — what a lucky doggie to have landed in your driveway. So good for both of you!

Didn’t realize T was riding in that race. PN is a Gian’ts Causeway Chestnut girl, trained by C Clement. Godspeed all; safe and sound. Love and Hugs, JB
How can a horse make you cry everytime you think of him. This lovely verse was tweeted to Kauto Star today.Thinking of my beloved boy and all our late, lamented 4 legged friends including Princess Z.Hugs Sheena.
Somewhere in time’s own space
there must be some sweet pastures place
where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
some paradise where horses go,
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again.
~Stanley Harrison.
Beautiful post. I know that those sweet pastures must contain fences for your Kauto to jump and vast expanses where all horses can run free like the Princess, Barbaro, St. Nick, Tasty and all others whom we will love always. Big D will be guarding the whole operation.
Max,
I guess the bad part about having been a racing fan for so long is that the list of those who have gone on gets longer each year. The good part is the joy they have brought to us.
As Her Majesty said once “to suffer the pain of grief is to have known the joy of love”And we all adore our horses on this blog plus all our other 4 legged friends and my ospreys. The list is endless but I wouldn’t have it any other way.The joy they bring to my life far outweighs the sad times.Sheena
Max
shirlee. When you start a list, it’s long and very painful. We’ve got to treasure these horses while we have them. That’s why I can accept it when my favorite loses and another horse wins, but not Blame.
sheena,
Now I have tears. Beautiful verse. My heart still hurts for so many that we have lost. I will never cease to mourn for Alydar and Easy Goer as well as Go For Wand, Ruffian and our sweet Z Princess among others. And can’t forget the beautiful Swale.
And Vertigineux and Street Cry. Wiseman’s Ferry, Dan’s sire. Dan’s dam sire, Wolf Power. The greatest sire of the last century, Northern Dancer. And so many more favorites of people who post here.
Absolutely beautiful. Our love for these wonderful beings is immeasurable and then, so is the sorrow in losing them. Queen Elizabeth’s words are so very true. Goodnight. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap, Herc, Frank, Bentley and all the Sweeties
Dear Max.I can imagine Big D guarding them all.A beautiful pic of Kauto accompanies the verse. His kind intelligent eyes.I am dreading Boxing day this year. After Dessie passed the day always belonged to Kauto.
I heard Long run may come back in Hunter chasesGH is running in the Irish Champion stakes. They are looking forward to a great weekend.Gleneagles will take on AP can never understand Aidan.Sheena.
Sense might prevail. It’s still just under consideration. Has O’Brien been turfed himself yet? Rumor as you said was that he was on the way out. Cannot see why Coolmore would run against their own future breeding prospects with AP.
I’m looking forward to GH in the Champion Stakes. See how that goes. Like Gosden. Dettori needs cash for that emu’s upkeep.
Long Run has been away for a long time. Is Sam returning as jockey or has Shorty taken over? That would be strange.
Dear Max.Oh no, Sam is still his jockey. Daddy Robert bought him especially for Sam to ride.I haven’t heard any more rumours about Aidan and Coolmore.Long Run got quite badly injured on his way back from France. He hasn’t posted on his FB since Kauto died.Calls himself a millionaire with big ears!!Sheena.
I do recall that he was injured after Shorty rode him in France. It was pretty serious. I like that comment about the big ears. Long Run has a good sense of humor. Making any change at Ballydoyle at this time of year would be unwise. Too much of the season remains and Moore is still on the disabled list. Might also be just rumors.
This is an article from Blood Horse on Ireland and the Thoroughbred. Gorgeous photos of the pastures, foals, Gallileo, Invincible Spirit, Sea The Stars, Sadler’s Wells, Nijinsky II and more. Enjoy. Love and Hugs, JB
Dear Judy. Thanks for this fabulous link.Given their love of the horse I will never understand Shergar’s terrible end or the Hyde Park bombing in July 1982.Hugs Sheena.
I know; as in so many wars, the innocents are the victims. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
These photos are really nice. I love the one of Nijinsky who ironically is not Irish at all, except for his training. He was born in Canada and spent most of his life post racing in the U.S. He is the last English Triple Crown winner.
The history between Ireland and England on the other hand is long and complex and bloody. It’s never been proven conclusively that the IRA killed Shergar, but it is very tragic that, if true, a horse was taken off and died like the theory of the case suggests. They still have not to this day located his body. He was a magnificent creature. RIP.
Dear Judy,
One of the most beautiful articles Bloodhorse has done. Ireland and England
are horse country. Such a very wonderful article, a country with horses as their
heritage.
Love and hugs
Hovis has had visitors this week, the physio and CNSM called. He’s in good condition except verging on anorexic(his words)!!!Poor mum is sad to be losing her 4 legged friend that barks today so Hovis has written a poem.Bless him.Safe trips to all horses and jockeys this weekend and a wonderful Labour day holiday to you all.Sheena. http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/blog/hovis-friday-i
Thank you for our Hovis update. Hopefully he gets a little more to eat to ward off anorexia! So sorry for Mom having to put down the dog. Very sweet poem from Hovis. Happy long weekend, everyone.
The Hovis blogs are always very witty, touching and informative and a delight to read.
That said, I think Hovis and his Mum would be the first to attribute credit where credit is due.
The poem is a very well known poem, to aid pet owners (animal caretakers) in their time of grief even if the author is unknown.
So perhaps a better way of putting it would be to say that Hovis referenced this sweet poem for his Mum’s comfort during this difficult time, rather than suggest he (or his human fingers) wrote it?
Dear 13Z.I think we all like to accept Hovis writes his own poems! It may not sound possible but we know it to be true.He is a well-known author after all.Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. 13ZRulz is actually right. I looked at his blog. Hovis himself has cited the writer of the poem as “Author Unknown”. You might have missed that. Reading the poem can get to a sensitive person. Sad for his mother in losing her long time friend.
Some of us have used our minds like u yo-leaving the lids off the can so that it collects u yo which is Cherokee for garbage. No wonder we have so little self-reliance, we learn so little from our experiences.
Each of us needs to keep a close eye on everything we do. This is a whole new world without observance of many rules. We used to know what was safe and what should be watched, but the times have changed and many of the so-called rules have been rewritten.
Good things and good people still exist and we should be a part of it. But it is not wise to leave ourselves open to every passing bit of trash.

Dear Kathy. There are still so many good people in this world. We only seem to get the sad news in our papers and tv.Hovis has gone very trim lately, his poems always give me leaky eyes.He will comfort mother no doubt.I will keep your auntie in my thoughts and prayers just as I am thinking of Wookie today.I had not realised he is so young,Hopefully he will get a good quality of life.
I hope you enjoy your trip to Del Mar on sunday. There will be crowds there I am sure. Our Fly will be parading next weekend at the Irish Champions weekend meeting.I haven’t seen Monty today no news yet but Blue may have gone. There’s a strong NW wind which should see him on his way.Maya is the only one left at Manton Bay youngest chick and dad left Wednesday and good news of 30(05) she was widowed 2 seasons ago and found another partner this year. She had 2 chicks one of them was Rutlands 100th chick to fledge! She left on Aug 31st and was 75 miles west of Madrid by Wednesday!Lovely story on Joey’s page about the little kitty found in the woods.Just dumping her with that collar choking her!Dave’s a real good guy.Mango and the sissy’s got a boxful of treats and Wimbley was dancing!Have a wonderful weekend.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.XOXO
So true. Many times we begin to think the bad people out-number the good, but in reality, with any luck, the number of good people is higher. Hovis does look quite gaunt. I hope he regains his muscle mass and just remains a happy horse. Yes, he will comfort Mother, bless him. Thank you so much for remembering my aunt on Tuesday. Yes, we are all thinking of Wookie today. My, he looks so tiny in that pic on Jill’s lap. He’s very young to be having such severe health problems, I would think. At least his mom is a vet and will take the best possible care of him. I’ll report back on my trip to Del Mar. I’m sure it will be fun! Must seem like a ghost town around the Dyfi with all the birds leaving. Sad! Safe travels for them all. Thank God for people like Dave. That is one lucky little cat. Some people’s cruelty is just astounding. Mango and sissy sure get a lot of gifts! Loved the pic of Wimbley dancing. Mom is a very talented photographer! Enjoy the weekend ahead. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXO
Hope our Queen is not suffering too much from the horrible heat and humidity. Know they are taking good care of her at Lanes End but gosh, to be pregnant in this weather whether human or horse is no fun.

Puppies first visit to vet. He won’t look at me and may be plotting some terrible revenge upon what’s left of my shoe wardrobe. Sweetie Pie ignores him and gazes off above his head while giving me puzzled looks. Her gaze seems to say I’m too old for this …! Prayers for the police officers across our nation. In a small town the police department is stretched so thin that the officers have to wear many hats. They are the first ones called and the last ones receiving the credit for a job well done. Seems like we only hear about the times things go horribly wrong. I’ll get off my soapbox now. Have a happy and safe weekend.
So very true, Vicki. Prayers for the wellbeing of our police everywhere. Much gratitude, too.
I think your little dog will forgive you for the trip to the vet!
Have a good weekend.

Watching videos of Zenyatta and Secretariat this morning. The power of Zenyatta’s closing strides always leaves me breathless. Even with her baby bump that power is still there in her bearing, in her eyes. I hope her boys have inherited that power and determination.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
I think most people resist change.

Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Yes, that was very good news. I’m driving down to Del Mar on Sunday to see him paraded again. It will be my last chance to see him this close to home!
Hugs, Kathy
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
You will probably have a better view than the 10 zillion of us who will be trying to see him at the BC! :-). Great news that he’s running though!
vicki
Happy to be back and feeling much better. Little dog is a riot. How can I not feel that he is a gift sent from God to lift me from the doldrums. He got me up and out of the house for some much needed exercise. We play catch. I throw the ball, he chases the ball, then he runs off with the ball and I hurry after him. I can easily imagine a day that every horse in the starting gate is the offspring of one of the horses I have come to love. How fast the year is passing. It seems like only yesterday I was watching AP racing in Arkansas.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Vicki. So happy you are feeling better. There’s nothing better than a pet to get you out of the house. Why is it the older we get time seems to fly!Hugs Sheena.

Max
Beautiful post. I know that those sweet pastures must contain fences for your Kauto to jump and vast expanses where all horses can run free like the Princess, Barbaro, St. Nick, Tasty and all others whom we will love always. Big D will be guarding the whole operation.
shirleeinindy
Max,
I guess the bad part about having been a racing fan for so long is that the list of those who have gone on gets longer each year. The good part is the joy they have brought to us.
sheena.davies(wales)
As Her Majesty said once “to suffer the pain of grief is to have known the joy of love”And we all adore our horses on this blog plus all our other 4 legged friends and my ospreys. The list is endless but I wouldn’t have it any other way.The joy they bring to my life far outweighs the sad times.Sheena
Max
shirlee. When you start a list, it’s long and very painful. We’ve got to treasure these horses while we have them. That’s why I can accept it when my favorite loses and another horse wins, but not Blame.
Terry Crow
Max-Wonderful sentiments. For me, though, when Hollywood Park was torn down, FOR MONEY, everything changed for me.
shirleeinindy
sheena,
Now I have tears. Beautiful verse. My heart still hurts for so many that we have lost. I will never cease to mourn for Alydar and Easy Goer as well as Go For Wand, Ruffian and our sweet Z Princess among others. And can’t forget the beautiful Swale.
Max
And Vertigineux and Street Cry. Wiseman’s Ferry, Dan’s sire. Dan’s dam sire, Wolf Power. The greatest sire of the last century, Northern Dancer. And so many more favorites of people who post here.
Terry Crow
In the case of Alydar, at least it didn’t happen on the track. Again, it was FOR MONEY
shirleeinindy
Terry,
Hope JT Lundy burns. I know we should forgive but I cannot forgive the humans who mistreat these wonderful horses.
Tizgood
Dear Sheena,
What lovely verses and so fitting for Kauto and those who recently went over the rainbow.

Absolutely beautiful. Our love for these wonderful beings is immeasurable and then, so is the sorrow in losing them. Queen Elizabeth’s words are so very true. Goodnight. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap, Herc, Frank, Bentley and all the Sweeties
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.I can imagine Big D guarding them all.A beautiful pic of Kauto accompanies the verse. His kind intelligent eyes.I am dreading Boxing day this year. After Dessie passed the day always belonged to Kauto.
I heard Long run may come back in Hunter chasesGH is running in the Irish Champion stakes. They are looking forward to a great weekend.Gleneagles will take on AP can never understand Aidan.Sheena.
Max
Sense might prevail. It’s still just under consideration. Has O’Brien been turfed himself yet? Rumor as you said was that he was on the way out. Cannot see why Coolmore would run against their own future breeding prospects with AP.
I’m looking forward to GH in the Champion Stakes. See how that goes. Like Gosden. Dettori needs cash for that emu’s upkeep.
Long Run has been away for a long time. Is Sam returning as jockey or has Shorty taken over? That would be strange.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.Oh no, Sam is still his jockey. Daddy Robert bought him especially for Sam to ride.I haven’t heard any more rumours about Aidan and Coolmore.Long Run got quite badly injured on his way back from France. He hasn’t posted on his FB since Kauto died.Calls himself a millionaire with big ears!!Sheena.
Max
I do recall that he was injured after Shorty rode him in France. It was pretty serious. I like that comment about the big ears. Long Run has a good sense of humor. Making any change at Ballydoyle at this time of year would be unwise. Too much of the season remains and Moore is still on the disabled list. Might also be just rumors.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Judy.Hope you have a goodnight.God bless you LM PC HT Cap Hercules Frank Bentley and all the sweeties.Love and hugs SheenaX

Dear Judy. Thanks for this fabulous link.Given their love of the horse I will never understand Shergar’s terrible end or the Hyde Park bombing in July 1982.Hugs Sheena.
Judy Berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
RIP.
Tizgood
Dear Judy,
One of the most beautiful articles Bloodhorse has done. Ireland and England
are horse country. Such a very wonderful article, a country with horses as their
heritage.

Dear Sheena,
Thank you for our Hovis update. Hopefully he gets a little more to eat to ward off anorexia! So sorry for Mom having to put down the dog. Very sweet poem from Hovis. Happy long weekend, everyone.
Hugs, Kathy XOXO
13ZRulz
The Hovis blogs are always very witty, touching and informative and a delight to read.
That said, I think Hovis and his Mum would be the first to attribute credit where credit is due.
The poem is a very well known poem, to aid pet owners (animal caretakers) in their time of grief even if the author is unknown.
So perhaps a better way of putting it would be to say that Hovis referenced this sweet poem for his Mum’s comfort during this difficult time, rather than suggest he (or his human fingers) wrote it?
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear 13Z.I think we all like to accept Hovis writes his own poems! It may not sound possible but we know it to be true.He is a well-known author after all.Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. 13ZRulz is actually right. I looked at his blog. Hovis himself has cited the writer of the poem as “Author Unknown”. You might have missed that. Reading the poem can get to a sensitive person. Sad for his mother in losing her long time friend.
Judy Berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
Thanks for Hovis. Love his Zenyatta like “dance move”. Beautiful poem for Mum’s dog. RIP. Love and Hugs, JB

Sheena,
Thank you for our Friday Hovis. Darn you both. Twice today I have been reduce to tears by the poems!

September 4 Cherokee Devotional
Some of us have used our minds like u yo-leaving the lids off the can so that it collects u yo which is Cherokee for garbage. No wonder we have so little self-reliance, we learn so little from our experiences.
Each of us needs to keep a close eye on everything we do. This is a whole new world without observance of many rules. We used to know what was safe and what should be watched, but the times have changed and many of the so-called rules have been rewritten.
Good things and good people still exist and we should be a part of it. But it is not wise to leave ourselves open to every passing bit of trash.
The time was when our Father, who lives above the clouds, loved our fathers, who lived long ago, and His face was bright, and He talked with our fathers.

Kathy
Dear Sheena,

Some good juvenile races at Kentucky Downs on Saturday.
Johnny V, you take care of Rachel’s little girl tomorrow!
God’s blessings and protection to all the horses this weekend.

Keep us advised. The Fly is certain to be exciting even when retired. He’s already got international travels on the horizon. Truly impressed.

Watching videos of Zenyatta and Secretariat this morning. The power of Zenyatta’s closing strides always leaves me breathless. Even with her baby bump that power is still there in her bearing, in her eyes. I hope her boys have inherited that power and determination. Secretariat and Zenyatta the two greatest horses of my lifetime. How blessed I have been to see them.
