Congrats to the Mosses and John Shirreffs with the debut win by 4 yr old Moss homebred, RUTILE, who blew the doors off at Santa Anita on Saturday with a Zenyatta-style, come-from-behind stretch rally to win by 3/4 length! By Medaglia d’Oro out of the mare, Set Them Free, Rutile is the half sister to Giacomo, Tiago, and Stanwyck. According to the write-up at TDN, Set Them Free produced a filly by Street Cry in 2014.
Thanks so much for these GREAT photos. A very big high hoof to everyone there who keeps us so well informed while putting big smiles on our faces. :-) Love the kitty, too.
Yesterday morning we met a goat in trainer Mike Machowsky’s barn, name of Maggie. I believe she hangs out with Rovenna, who did not do well yesterday. :-( Anyway, exercise rider for Cowtownmary, Linda, told us they talk to each other and she imitated their sounds. It was funny and touching to hear this.
Yesterday we were there to see Rutile’s big win, WOW!!! After the races Rod & I went to local sports/bar restaurant Matt Denny’s, where a lot of race trackers hang out. Sometime I will tell the story of what happened after the Big ‘Cap, but for now I want to tell THIS story. While we were eating at a bar table, who should walk in but Dottie!! She sat at the bar, so I wasted no time in sprinting (lol) over to congratulate her. She said , thanks and that it was “FUN.” I asked her the correct pronunciation of Rutile, and she said they call her Rutile (as in Roo -teel), but, “whatever Trevor wants to call her is fine ” with her. Funny. (As long as it is a call that leads to the winner’s circle, right?) Not wanting to disturb her more, I went back to my seat, but realized a few minutes later I should have told her I was a Dumpling. It’s been along time since I have spoken directly to her (except for a smile, so not sure she would know me now anyway.) So, on our way out (by now John has sat down, they are eating and watching basketball on the TV above the bar) Rod made sure to congratulate them himself and told them they were probably responsible for the Pick 6 carryover today! While everyone laughed, Rod then told Dottie that I was one of the : “original Dumplings.” Well, fellow Dumplings, Dottie became very animated and told us the story of who was in the winner’s circle with them. I apologize for not knowing names here (and Dottie did not mention specific names) but in the winner’s circle with them was a Dumpling whose sister from Cincinnati was with her and this sister is disabled. Per Dottie, she (Dottie) gave the plaque to the sister. I got the impression she was talking about this same race; if she meant another race at different time, not sure. Anyway, no matter when this happened, everyone was thrilled. I went on to tell her how much both of their recent Q and A’s were so appreciated on this blog and we so appreciated their time with all that they do. Then just as soon as John had a mouthful of food, Rod asked him, “How ‘s Coz?” I made a comment about the timing of that question and Dottie assured us, that oh no,” he’ll answer you as soon as he can.” Well, John did answer the question with, “He’s doing well.” and smiled. Sorry folks, we did not learn any secret intel! So, we left very happy campers. talking about it all the way home. Of course they were gracious, smiling and engaged in the conversation. No surprise there!
Re Cowtownmary, he has FINALLY started workouts, so a race MAY be in his near future. He returned to the barn in November (October?) after six months at the farm, so it’s been a long time between drinks. We lucked out and were there at the exact time he worked out last Saturday–three furlongs. We planted ourselves at the rail and watched him go and return. Week before that he had had his work on Friday and when we saw him Saturday he was a very happy horse. It’s hard to describe, but he was all full of himself and made us giggle. Even one of the grooms said he had been acting “happy.” I had a very good betting day that day and someone later told me that our horse had “set the tone” for that from early morning. We think he was just so happy to have had that workout the day before and be able to stretch those legs and muscles that he couldn’t contain himself. Listen to Anne here, the horse whisperer, ha ha.
Anne, I sure loved your story of Dottie and John. I too am a dumpling. Dottie made the blog so much fun back then. REMEMBER. I wish she would come on the Z blog from time to time.
hugs, Sally B
♥ Hi Anne!
I wish I had been at the track to watch Rutile’s maiden race/win! I watched it live on TVG (bit the bullet to watch that channel LOL) and on Cal racing.
That was an awesome race… vision of the Queen; moving like a freight train!!! I didn’t think Rutile would get there!! She sure fooled a lot of us because she paid so well.
I did see Jacqueline in the WC with Dottie, but I didn’t recognize the “dumpling” you referenced.
Dottie giving the winning plaque to the disable woman reminded me of the day we dumplings presented her with the 2 photo albums. Shirreffs had a horse win that day. Dottie gave the plate to Karen and her daughter, Jasmine. That gesture brought tears to Karen’s eyes! I was right there. It was a beautiful moment. Proof, once again, how nice the Shirreffs are!
Be Excited, Not anxious – always trust in John. Good Friday Race 4 – Long race, no pressure at the start, ease into the flow and cruise home, (just like Z) ! John’s ground work is complete, Victor is great, any problems at the start, Coz can finesse it later.

Hi Judy,
Be Excited, Not anxious – always trust in John. Good Friday Race 4 – Long race, no pressure at the start, ease into the flow and cruise home, (just like Z) ! John’s ground work is complete, Victor is great, any problems at the start, Coz can finesse it later.

Dear Amy:
Like a lot of COZ’s “Aunties”, I am a Nervous Nellie when it comes to Z and her babes. I know John will always do what’s right for them. It’s the general risks that go with racing that concern me.
Love your description of how the race will go. God go with you COZ; Godspeed. Love and Hugs, JB

AmyK Zenyatta has many many more fans than that I believe; such as perhaps 100,000. I am confused.
