    editor’s note: I asked Teresa to write about returning to a summer of racing at Saratoga after a first half of the year that included being diagnosed with–and treatment for–cancer. She was trepidatious at first, but gradually found the words among shared experiences with family and the horses. I’m glad she did. -@EJXD2

    My family gathers in the backyard at Saratoga on Labor Day.
    My mother prepares a cooler of sandwiches and snacks; we bring cans of beer and plastic bottles of wine (no glass allowed) and water; my brother and I secure the same picnic tables at which he has sat for decades, and at which I joined him 17 years ago, when I began my Saratoga homecoming.

    Caravaggio’s yearling sister is heading to Europe having been bought for the Niarchos family.The grey will try to emulate her brother’s victories over here.She was sold for $550,000.No trainer has been named yet.

        • The Euro horses have arrived at Woodbine for the Ricoh Woodbine Mile on Saturday. Ballydoyle has sent over Deauville and Lancaster Bomber. The current favorite is World Approval for Mark Casse. The US horses arrive later this week because they do not have to go into quarantine.

        • JudyB. Dan used to own that race. He’s still got the race and course record. They gave him a standing ovation on his last win, something that seldom happens except for Secretariat, when he won the Canadian International. The newspapers had headlines – “Wise Dan invades Canada.” Those were the days.

        It looks like the trainers also stayed, and Gulfstream management. There was minimal effect on the track, only palm fronds lying about. Thank God. This looks like a small miracle to me.

          I know. I was so worried that the horses would be scared out of their wits by the roar and power of the high winds and falling trees and worse, be injured by collapsing barns. I’m sure their grooms and trainers being there for them was a great comfort. Could have been so much worse. Love and Hugs, JB

        • JudyB. Yes, it could have been bad news This was a very worrying situation. I read that the horses who were in the girls’ apartment did not want to leave after the hurricane was over to go back to their barn. They liked the AC in particular. These are highly intelligent creatures. I recall that Storm Cat had AC in his barn.

    Dear friends hope all in the hurricanes path are hanging on. My brother has the worst run of luck and I told him he needed to move from Beaumont area. In Rita his apartment complex was destroyed, in Ike his mobile home was destroyed and now the roof on his trailer collapsed and was flooded. When he retires in December he is moving to Deep East Texas. not that we are immune. Hurricanes seem to have such great reach nowadays. Seeing baby Z makes me so happy and yet I can’t help but recall Z Princess.

    Silviniaco Conti has won his first rosette in a novice chase at Belvoir.He is with Charlotte Alexander who .used to care for Denman.They hope to go team chasing eventually but Charlotte is allowing him to dictate the pace.The 3 day St Leger meeting starts tomorrow.

    What a tragedy in Florida. Horrible heat and no power; no AC. My heart goes out to all of them in FL and in the Keys and Islands. Sad what happened to the Seniors in the nursing home. RIP all victims of these terrible hurricanes. Love and Hugs, JB

      It certainly is very sad that these nursing home residents had to experience this tragic occurrence. Hope the utilities can be restored soon — Florida heat and humidity can be unbearable and deadly especially for those in weakened physical condition.
      Prayers for strength and help to those who are hurting. RIP all who perished.

        Dear Max and Z Fans:

        Don’t know if you all remember me telling you about the rain storm in 2010 that hit RI and caused a nearby river in Warwick and Cranston to rise 11 feet above normal. We had 2 feet of water in our basement and were without electricity and hot water for 7 days. Luckily, this happened in March and we didn’t have to endure Summer heat and humidity. President Obama sent FEMA aide and our local fire drpartment came a total of three times to drain the water from our basement down to a few inches. The compresser in the boiler was ruiened and had to be replaced and everything stored there was water damaged. That experience was a party compared to what these poor people are going through as a result of these awful hurricanes. God give them strength. Love and Hugs, JB

        • No electricity in March in RI is not good either. It can be very cold.
          There are now 50 or 60k workers on the job in Florida, but this could still take a long time. In many areas, they have to rebuilt the infrastructure in addition to rewiring the grid. Gulfstream is looking more like a little miracle everyday.

          We are doing well here. Bailey and Smudge got baths and had nails clipped today at the vet’s. Smudge was due for his annual vaccinations and check-up. All went fine. They are very tired doggies tonight!

    Wanted to Thank Everyone so much for keeping me in your Thoughts and Prayers over this last week. We got power back and just today got Mediacom TV And Internet Service restored. This was a rough storm, but having said that it could have been a lot worse. We just had a lot of downed limbs.

    Congratulations to Desert Skyline for winning one of the oldest staying races (1766)the Doncaster cup today.Trainer David Elsworth won this race back in 2003 with the 10yr old Persian Punch.DS is only 3.David also trained the immortal grey Desert Orchid.Mullins Thomas Hobson was 2nd.
