This little lady certainly has it all, beauty, confidence and attitude. I think Charles may have a bit of a crush on her. May she stay happy and healthy and eventually go to the best trainer who can develope her when the time comes. Till then, we have the joy of getting to know her and watch her grow into a stunning filly like her Mom. As always Team Z, thanks for all you do for us.
Think he finished 5th. I’ll post the replay as soon as I can get it. My gosh, he worked his way through pretty well after a couple of spots closed up. Next time might be the charm. Love and Hugs, JB
It’s time to find him another job. 5 years old and still not competitive is not worth keeping him in training. Let’s face it. He’s not a race horse if he hasn’t figured out yet he has to pass other horses nd WIN!
The question of worth is a decision for the owners. They have the experience and the means to keep Coz in training for as long as they think that it is the right thing for the horse. Some horses take longer to figure things out than others. Sometimes it’s luck. Coz has not raced very often so that it’s still too soon to assume that he’s not a racehorse. That’s a decision for his trainer.
judy berube
Dear Mary Jane, Max and Z Fans:
I think COZZIE has figured out what he’s supposed to do. I see potential, interest and courage in his tries in these last two races. Hopefully, he will have success next time. He didn’t have the best luck with this trip either. A lot of maneuvering inside and outside. He’s a big boy and slipping through very small spaces won’t work.
As you say Max, he has not raced very often, but he’s getting there I think. Just want him to stay healthy and sound. Love and Hugs, JB
It is not for us to make a decision about Coz’s future.I always feel we expected too much from Zenyatta’s foals. She was a complete one off.I recall a chaser broke his maiden at Tramore not too long ago at the 26th time of asking so we must always live in hope and Coz is lightly raced.
Max
JudyB. If Coz has it figured out, he may be running against the wrong competition. To win, both he and Ziconic may have to drop down in class. Clearly, they are not in the same league as their parents, but they could still be winners at a lower level. The owners however may have a different view.
judy berube
Dear Max:
Frankly, I share your thoughts on the class of competition. Problem is how to do that and keep them out of Maiden Claiming races. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. They would have to find another track, not Del Mar, Santa Anita or Los Al, where there are horses at their level. These 3 tracks are for future graded stakes horses. Both Ziconic and Coz seem to be doing everything right. They just keep getting beat by better horses because they are not in that league. In the end, however, it’s the trainer and owners who call the shots. We’re all armchair.
judy berube
Dear Max:
Maybe a change of venue would do the trick. Los Alamitos or Aqueduct maybe?? Decision for the owners and JS. Love and Hugs, JB

Los Al and Aqueduct have the same level of horses who are currently winning against the boys. Secretariat and Northern Dancer raced at Aqueduct. It hosts the Wood. Something like Golden Gate may offer them a better chance to win. Then again, it could all turn around at Del Mar or Santa Anita. The racing gods alone know for sure.
judy berube
Dear Max:
Yes, we must wait and see how it goes. Golden Gate, forgot about that track. Love and Hugs, JB
I could be wrong but I really think COZ should run a longer race, he has the distance and he is being kept back. Or the start should have him in position in more to the front. COZ is not his Mother or his Father. I am not a trainer or a jockey but I see the potential in him. He is a Sea Biscuit. I wonder if he getting angry. I am just saying, I do not want to offend anyone.
RIP Come On Flip
Old Friends had to bid farewell to one of their beloved residents. Flip was a 26 year old gelding who raced from 1993 to 2000 and earned well over $500,000. Apparently, he had enjoyed a good retirement before coming to Old Friends and enjoyed his time at Old Friends as well. The article in The Paulick Report stated that he loved his clover right up to the last. He was euthanized due to laminitis. Running free and without pain, dear one.
I’m sorry. but I didn’t see Coz getting much running room down on the rail and in the middle of horses. The only time he could stretch out those long legs was at the end and he just didn’t have enough time. Still pulling for you, Coz. Your mama liked coming around the outside and I think maybe that would suit you, too. And maybe keeping more in contact with the leaders.
Thanks for posting the link to his race!! I felt that was a good race for him – he seemed to be getting into it and giving it some try, gained some experience with being down on the inside and blocked and he did very well,in my opinion. It appeared to me that he was interested in the race this time. Go Coz!! He’ll get ’em next time!
Biscuits: Gun, is that you coming out of the early morning mist? You have recovered from your race already?
Gun: Yep, I’m not letting the grass grow under my hooves. I’m ready to go at it again.
Biscuits: I’m so proud of you. You totally rocked yesterday. It looked like a paid workout.
Gun: I’ve been putting all of your advice to work and it has sure paid off. I’m in full chestnut mode and I’m planning on moving on to the next level.
Biscuits: This is super. Gun, have you also become even better looking?
Gun: Winning does that for a chestnut.
Biscuits: I’ll say. You are also now number 1 in the rankings. It’s what you always wanted. And I see that you are still sporting that braided look.
Gun: It’s cool and flying horseshoes don’t get caught in your mane. What’s up with you?
Biscuits: Lots of tests and exams. Hand wringing by the humans about what I’m thinking. I’m staying above it. I’m focused on my big comeback. I’m under the radar.
Gun: Yeah. Don’t let that chatter get to you. Keep your eye on the next race. You heading back to Belmont?
Biscuits: Next week. I may race again before going to Del Mar. We can hook up in Cali.
Gun: I’m going back to Churchill next week. We’re not going to Cali until the heat lets up there. 100 degrees! Got to think of the old cashmere and do what’s best.
Biscuits: Agreed. I’ll send you some styling products. Keep in touch by cell. We’ve got lots to discuss, such as meeting up with Zenyatta’s boys at Del Mar. I’m not giving up on that introduction to their mother.
Gun: I will call you and you can call me. I may be number 1 in the rankings, but that big gray horse still has higher earnings. At this rate to catch him, I may never retire.
Biscuits: Gun, we’ve both got big issues with that barn. Winning is still on the cards for us. We have go on relentlessly, and look good while we are doing it.
Gun: Definitely. We are chestnuts and chestnuts are not losers. Are we ever giving up on winning?
Biscuits: NEIGH x 10!

Wouldn’t it be worth trying a different jockey for Zenyatta’s boys. She thrived on the recognition of not just her physical abilities but also of what her spirit needed; Mike backed off with the whip, for example, because she responded negatively to that.
The one ride by Gary Stevens provided a zest in the runner. Victor is a great rider who stays in control and urges his way, but that may not be what these two need. I’d love to see Gary back on, encouraging rather than urging. Both Coz and Zi thrive with John’s recognition of their preferences (just like their mom). In my view they need a chance with a jockey who practices that same approach.
I agree Nancy. Nothing against Victor but if the boys are now racing on turf they need a rider who is a turf specialist! Victor had to put the brakes on a few times and navigate through some traffic but Coz was moving and had a great gallop out. Way in front of the other horses. Possibly could use more distance too!

I was checking on W.B. Smudge last evening and found that he had run 4 races at Oaklawn earlier this year (each month from Jan to April). He finished second in April and third in January with a sixth and seventh in the other two races. I haven’t found any other news about him and hope he is okay — safe and cared for. He is 8 years old now, and since he is a gelding, he has been a hard worker. Sure hope his owners love him.
Coz definitely looked engaged this time. Seems like an outside line might get him there. He’s definitely trying more since the switch to turf. Who knew?? Love those boys!!
