Ann’s recent trip to Lane’s End was all smiles as old friends were reunited. Mario and Carmen, who both worked with Zenyatta at Barn 55, joined Ann and got to meet Zenyatta’s 2017 Medaglia d’Oro filly. Scroll down for lots of photos.
Oh wow, these pixs really warm my heart seeing Ann so happy to be with her Z and her sweet filly. So happy Mario and Carmen got to tag along since it’s probably been awhile for them but they all look so incredibly happy to be there. Best medicine for Ann during what I’m sure is a very difficult time. Love to you all!
Buick taken to hospital as Permian fatally injured in Secretariat Stakes
By David Baxter RacingPost AUG 13 2017
William Buick was taken to hospital after being unseated after the line from Permian in the Secretariat Stakes, with the Mark Johnston-trained colt suffering a fatal injury.
Later in article
Buick was taken to Northwest Community Hospital, and it was later reported by the Daily Racing Form that he had suffered a fractured T12 vertabra, with the jockey complaining of lower back pain. https://www.racingpost.com/news/news/jockey-taken-to-hospital-as-permian-fatally-injured-in-secretariat-stakes/296735
Wishing William Buick well.It seems Permian crossed the line in last place when he unshipped Buick. It was found out he had sadly broken his leg I do hope he was not in pain during the race.Such a tragic waste of a horse’s life.Sleep tight and PU William
I, too, hope Permian was not in pain during the race, poor baby. This is so very sad and upsetting. Rest in Peace, brave Permian. Condolences to all connections — another beautiful soul has moved on. :-(
Best wishes to William Buick for a speedy recovery.
On this day in 2010 Frankel broke his maiden at Newmarket the rest as they say…The horse he beat Nathaniel is the sire of the fabulous Enable.
Good luck to Thunder Snow in the Jacques de Marois today.
Congrats to Dettori riding Al Wakair in the Jacques de Marois! Thunder Snow was SO close — it was almost a three-way dead heat. Congrats to Thunder Snow on a very close third and to Inns of Court on placing second.
If it’s sunday it must Ireland for Ryan and France for Frankie.A bit of Dettorri magic as Al Wakair wins the Jacques de Marois in a photo finish and Aidan wins his 16th group one with Sioux Nation(Scat daddy) in the Phoenix and another for Scat Daddy as Mendelssohn wins.Congratulations to all connections.
The racing gods work in mysterious ways. O’Brien was locked out of any wins on the US turf this weekend. Two grade 1 wins were taken by Chad Brown, former apprentice to Bobby Frankel, who holds the record for most grade 1 wins in a year. I’m hoping that Frankel keeps his record.
Yes a better day for Aidan and the Scat Daddies,I hope Hawkbill stays safe still finding Permian’s loss difficult.i had seen some of the criticism on social media Mark’s son is a qualified vet and not inexperienced.I may have disagreed with him sending Permian on such a long journey but horses travel the world these days.Maybe William should have pulled him up.I haven’t seen the race and don’t want to so I cannot really comment too much.Bobby will hold on that record awhile longer I think.
Max
It looks like Hawkbill will be at Woodbine for awhile because those races are fairly far apart. He won’t be shipping in and leaving right away so that it will be less stressful on the horse. They also have a large off track gallops area there too. It’s more than just barns and a track. Joshua Tree, a world traveller, was a consistent big winner at Woodbine.
It seems to have been very bad luck for Peri and Buick. Last I read Buick is out of action for some time with a broken vertebrae. Don’t know the rules at Arlington, but the on site track vet was probably also involved in the decision. Very sad to lose a horse with so much promise or any horse. I’m still upset about Caixa and it’s been years. Ben too.

Dear Max and Sheena:
Like both of you, never get over a tragic loss either.
Hoping Bobby F holds on to the record; but if that’s not what the racing Gods have in store, would be nice if it’s Bobby’s protege, CB, who does it. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
By my count, Brown has 8 grade 1s so far. O’Brien has 16.
If anyone can come close to Frankel or beat him, it would be O’Brien. It’s much more unlikely that Brown can overtake Frankel who had 25 wins, an unbelievable record. O’Brien is backed by Ballydoyle which is the largest racing operation in the world and which explains his high numbers. There is also a lot more competition in the US and Canada, so that one trainer can rarely dominate here to the extent that Frankel did with his wins. This shows what an incredible trainer Bobby Frankel was. And a great human being who cared deeply for animals, horses and dogs.

Dear Max:
What you say makes perfect sense. AO’B has a real head start on CB and also, he has horses everywhere. Still, hope Bobby’s record holds. He was one of the trainers I always did and will admire. He truly loved horses and dogs. Love and Hugs, JB

I’m just hoping that the racing gods give some grade 1s to other people like Stoute or Fabre or Darley. Anybody but O’Brien. Frankel should keep his record.
Thanks for this news. Congrats to Al Wakair and Frankie D and to A O’B, Sioux Nation and Mendelssohn. Scat Daddy must be so proud of his boys. Love and Hugs, JB

I read a while back that Morton Fink decided that the Dan’s would not be trained to do any other jobs, such as pony work. They would instead be left free to roam together on the farm, and to be just horses as God meant them to be.
Rheingold gave Lester his first Arc win as I am sure you know but I will always remember Dahlia beating both Rheingold and Roberto in the King George at Ascot in 73’Amazing that day.

“Following are closing remarks by Stuart S. Janney III, chairman of The Jockey Club, at Sunday’s Jockey Club Round Table Conference on Matters Pertaining to Racing in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.”
Thanks for posting this, but although I am happy that Mr. Janney, Jockey Club Chairman is speaking out against the recent cruel and fraudulent practices exposed in Pennsylvania; sad to say that nothing has really changed. The horses are still at the mercy of unscrupulous breeders, owners and trainers with no true policing of the sport to protect them.
Peggy and I have just today written letters on behalf of a horse that she found and loves at Gulfstream. He has been claimed and reclaimed and as of 6/29/17 has been entered in four races in six weeks, finishing 10th in his last race on 8/12/17. He is now entered once again on 8/18/17. All this, this poor boy has endured since being claimed from the 6/29/17 race. We have called the stewards at Gulfstream and have written letters today to the Gulfstream Corporate Office and Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association asking them to help this sweet innocent. He’s a five year old Colonel John Gelding named My Johnny Be Good.
If any of you want to call or write on his behalf the number for FL Horsemen’s B and P Assoc. is 954-457-3516; address P.O. Box 3507, Hallandale Beach, FL 33008. Love and Hugs, JB

Wow these pictures are great !!! It is hard to tell who is happier Zenyatta, Ann, Mario, or Carmen. Maybe one day Zenny’s Little Princess will have Mario and Carmen taking care of her just like they did Zenyatta. Thank You again for keeping us in the loop with Zenny and her baby.

Dear BGG and Z Fans:

Safe travel to Aeron and all the Osprey when they go. Brits must really miss Big Ben. I don’t think Poldark starts on our PBS here until the Fall. Looking forward to it. Goodnight. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap, Herc, Frank, Bentley and all the Sweeties
