Dear Kathy,
Shared silence can be awesome. We’ve seen many meteor showers ~ waking in the middle of the night or up early long before sunrise. We usually don’t ‘chat’ much, since the critters are nearby sleeping. I can’t remember if I’ve shared this before, but the exception once was when a pack of 6 coyotes came by our home (they are frequently here at night or early before dark on their way home from ‘hunting’). One night they all stood or sat and watched an amazing shower “with us”. They were about 100 feet or so from where we were. We’d make a quiet comment occasionally to each other, and sometimes the coyotes would all howl after a particularly spectacular burst of stars passing by in the sky above us all. Mostly we were all quiet. They knew we were there, and we really did think they enjoyed sharing that special evening with us. For us it was one of the most wonderful experiences we’ve had. Hope you and everyone here in Zenyatta Land have a great Tuesday. with love, Elizabeth

Morning Z-sters. Anyone remember clotheslines? Here’s some fun clothesline etiquette.
THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES:
(If you don’t even know what clotheslines are, better skip this.)
1. You had to hang the socks by the toes… NOT the top.
2. You hung pants by the BOTTOM/cuffs… NOT the waistbands.
3. You had to WASH the clothesline(s) before hanging any clothes – walk the entire length of each line with a damp cloth around the lines.
4. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang “whites” with “whites,” and hang them first.
5. You NEVER hung a shirt by the shoulders – always by the tail! What would the neighbors think?
6. Wash day on a Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the weekend, or on Sunday, for Heaven’s sake!
7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could hide your “unmentionables” in the middle. (perverts & busybodies, y’know!)
8. It didn’t matter if it was sub-zero weather… clothes would “freeze-dry.”
9. ALWAYS gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were “tacky”!
10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothespins but shared one of the clothespins with the next washed item.
11. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket and ready to be ironed.
12. IRONED???!! Well, that’s a whole OTHER subject!
Dear Kathy.I loved this but rules are meant to be broken.Always left pegs on the line and clothes out overnight Never hid my “unmentionables” no perverts but plenty of busybodies in my old street! And wash the clothesline???Love and hugs.
I remember clothes on the clothesline. Thanks for jogging my memory! Mama hung a lot of clothes, linens and towels out — another thing I remember, laundry always smelled so fresh when dried outside in the sun. Ironing was a very hot task in the summer months, and lots of things needed to be ironed in those days, too. Somehow, she always got it done though.
Yes! everything smelled wonderful after drying on the clothesline. And yes, ironing was a very hot task. It probably made us better people! We have it too easy now…
Kathy,
Just as my grandmother taught me. Makes me crazy to see them hanging clothes on a line on TV or in a movie. Clearly those people do not know how to hang clothes.
And after they were in the laundry basket, you had to “sprinkle” them with water, roll ’em up and put in a bag waiting to be ironed. And sometimes that bag of clothes ended up in the fridge.
Absolutely right. I remember well sprinkling the clothes, too! Oh, and get this…my grandmother had a wringer washing machine. Boy did it get everything clean! Plus the hems were not all frayed from the agitation of an automatic. Good times!
Hugs, Kathy
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Kathy,
I can remember when my grandmother had a wringer washing machine, too. It was out in the “wash house” which had a large cast iron pot set in a brick surround for boiling white items of clothing and linens (usually with lye soap) over a fire. It was a cozy place to be on wash day in cold weather! There was electricity in the wash house for the machine and for light. The clothesline was just outside.
At our house, we had a Philco-Bendix front-load washing machine in the kitchen. Whenever the load was off-balance during the spin cycle, that machine would shake vigorously. Mama loved that old Bendix though; she never thought as highly of its successor which was a top-load Frigidaire, but it lasted a very long time.
Thanks for the memories — I’ve enjoyed the stroll down memory lane!
Hugs and Love
shirleeinindy
Kathy,
My grandmother had a wringer Maytag. In summer months she washed on the back porch. That darn thing would walk across the floor when it really go going. Remember all the warnings about being careful with your hands around the wringer???
Oh yes, sprinkling the clothes was a must. If you couldn’t finish the ironing, you simply had to put the dampened clothes in the fridge especially in hot weather since you didn’t want the laundry to sour.
Ah, memories! Like the song says, “. . . misty water-colored memories of the way we were”.
Oh, wow, does that bring back memories. We were kids and living on a block of three story houses. I remember our neighbor across the street hanging her clothes from the second floor clothesline. She had everything sorted, as you said, whites together and colors and items of clothing together. As she meticulously did her chore, she would sing at the top of her lungs. Beautiful voice. The whole neighborhood enjoyed it. Love and Hugs, JB
Wow! That was fun. Not only remembering all the rules, but reading others’ comments. I was the designated ironer (my choice…beat vacuuming and dusting!) in our house. I loved to have a huge stack of ironing and get it done while watching TV. We sprinkled the items either off the line or out of the dryer and, like everyone else, put them in plastic bags. However, we put them in the freezer so they could wait till I had the time to do the ironing. In later years, I just used a spray bottle as I ironed. In those days, we ironed our sheets and pillow cases!!!! I iron very little now (thanks to wrinkle free fabrics) but when I do I use the trusty steam iron, but will always remember the sprinkling/freezing method!
Thanks for the walk down memory lane!
Hi Mama Z….and baby Z…..good morning to both our girls. I hope your day is as beautiful as this morning is and somehow you have a cool and lazy afternoon just hanging out together. Love looking at your pictures! The world is big and complicated and it’s precious to see the pureness of Zenyatta and her foal.
WOW! What SUPER coverage of Ascot by NBCSports! So nice to have the dedicated program rather than the rotating course (with Ascot stuck in) that used to be broadcast (TVG used the British feed). Congrats to Ribchester for winning the opener – have no idea yet where the American horses finished, but I think I got a glimpse of Miss Temple City not too far behind.
Now, GET THIS! Girvin and MIKE SMITH are coming here – to CLEVELAND! – for the Ohio Derby on Saturday. I knew that Irap was coming, but this was a real surprise! Hope I can get close enough for a photo (will need to wear my Songbird shirt – courtesy of Daily Racing Funnies!). Woo Hoo!

Hi Sandy in Ohio –
Isn’t it exciting when our favorites come to town? I am always in awe when I see the horses, jockeys, trainers and owners when I get to Saratoga. Just wish I could see more racing live. But thank goodness for tv!
Have a blast rooting on Girvin and Mike. I’m sure if you plan it well you can get close enough to give them a shout out.
Thanks Annie B! Thistledown I see not very spectator friendly. No walking ring, and the best pre-race views are from a window along the side of the grandstand. Will certainly try to get a place in the limited space outside, but it will be me and everyone else with the same goal. Counting on my Songbird shirt to make me stand out from the crowd ?
Congrats to The Lady on her victory today. Kudos to Johnny V for a masterful ride. Great video of them getting their trophies and watches from William and Kate on Bloodhorse.com.
The Lady’s connections went with Uncle Johnny for a reason. He has had lots of experience at Royal Ascot. He had two winners in 2009. He rode Animal Kingdom at Ascot. He usually rides for Pletcher or Ward. In addition, he has won and set records at Woodbine on the turf with Wise Dan. Woodbine’s EP Taylor turf course is modelled on European turf and is the only mile and half race track in North America other than the Belmont dirt track.
Thank you so much for this. Wow, what a beautiful win by Lady A and JV. Poetry In Motion.
Huge Congrats! Wishing Frankie D a complete recovery and soon. Love and Hugs, JB
Dear Judy;A fabulous day’s racing Aidan had no explanation for Chuchill’s poor showing he did sweat a lot but it was very hot and tomorrow we will have the highest June temperatures since the legendary summer of 76′.There is talk Winx may visit Ascot next year then visit Frankel while she is over here.Glesni’s mumbrella was out in force today but the chicks are growing so fast. It’s unbearably hot tonight.Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT Cap Hercules Frank Bentley Willow and all the sweeties.Love and hugs Sheenax
We’re in the muggies here too. Hope Churchill is OK. Oh, wow, Winx and Frankel; great potential for that future little one. Goodnight. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap, Herc, Frank, Bentley and all the Sweeties
Hi Z-sters. Thank you for strolling down memory lane with the wringer washing machines, clotheslines and ironing. Here’s another blast from the past…remember all the fruit on the fruit trees ripening on the very hottest days in the summer and there you would be in the kitchen with your mother and grandmother and aunts canning all that fresh fruit? Lots of sweating, but you sure were proud at the end of the day with all those quarts of fruit to enjoy throughout the year. GOOD TIMES!
Finding the heat unbearable today.Qemah gained a 2nd RA victory by winning the Duke of Cambridge. She won the Coronation Stakes last year.Prince of Wales up next. Her Majesty is in primrose yellow. She has had a busy morning and HRH Prince Philip is in hospital with an infection.
Wow another win for Highland Reel!He never knows when he is beaten he has everything you want in a TB.He has won almost £6 million in prize money
On another subject we have a boy and a girl at Rutland they were ringed this morning. http://www.facebook.com/racingitv/
The Queen did not wear the Imperial State Crown for her speech today. However, the crown got a ride to Parliament in its own car, was carried into the House of Lords followed by The Queen and then sat on a pillow to her right as she read her speech. Very cool.

Marshall, you are welcome.
Great racing today
Quite a fashion show by the Royal family-The Queen, Prince Charles & Camilla, William & Kate All were beautifully attired.
Because of warm weather, men were given permission to remove their jackets
Looking forward to tomorrow. BGG

Best,
Annie B.

Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Grrrr Thistldown is not very . . . .

GOOD TIMES!

The Queen did not wear the Imperial State Crown for her speech today. However, the crown got a ride to Parliament in its own car, was carried into the House of Lords followed by The Queen and then sat on a pillow to her right as she read her speech. Very cool.
