Q:
A question for Lanes End: Your pastures appear so lush and Zenyatta obviously loves to graze. Would you explain pasture upkeep and the type of grasses that grow in your pastures?
Gayle Haushahn
Bismarck, AR
A:We started putting Lane’s End together in 1980, and it has grown to 2,000 acres. The farm is divided between stallions, broodmares, and yearlings. Each barn has it’s own pasture around it, of approximately 250 acres. Most fields are 30-50 acres in size, and the fences are laid so that they follow the contour of the land.
We’re fortunate because we have a great ratio of horses to pastures; we can rotate pastures and maintain with weed control, fertilize, and move the horses off to rest each pasture.
We maintain a mixture of bluegrass and orchard grass. There’s no irrigation, but we have two growing seasons. We are able to sow grass in the spring and fall, and we do sow about half the farm every year. Grass gets damaged by drought and hot weather, and we have to constantly replace it.
Watch the video above for Mike’s complete response.
Q:
LE grounds are impeccable! Stables look like you could eat off floor! Question, what is involved (manpower) to maintain such a beautiful facility?
Cathy Black
Ashburn, VA
A:We have 150 employees, and we’re very fortunate to have a support staff that is next to none. That’s probably the most important thing about the farm—aside from the facility—the people who work here. I can’t say enough about their loyalty and concern for horses.
We have a good mixture of experienced people, plus we’re constantly trying to lure young people here that can work their way up through the system. That’s been important. Most of our advances in staff, assistant managers and managers, are people who put in their time before they got promoted to their positions. That’s one of the things that we try to do here—our top level people are all home grown.
This keeps young people coming to the farm. We try to create an environment where they have input in what’s going on. They get a lot of responsibility, they all know how we do things, but they get to mix in their own thoughts and actually have a say in what goes on.
Watch the video above for Mike’s complete response.

Z Fans,
Here is the link stating that Frankel’ last race most likely will be the Ascot Champions Day. This article states he will not go to the ARC. Too bad, that would have been great.
Not sure he going to like being a stud, they better have a lot of money to repair his stall and plant new grass in his paddock. I imagine he will be racing around and tearing things up with out a focus other that the girls.
GOOD LUCK FRANKEL !!!!
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/aug/31/frankel-ascot-champions-day?newsfeed=true
Max
The estimate of his worth if sold is £100 million or more. It would appear that Prince Khalid can handle his upkept at his Juddmonte farms in the UK, Ireland and Kentucky. His stud fee will probably be private like his father.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
But will he be happy MAX, that is the question ????
Watched an Inside Information on some trainers and their styles of training ETC…
on HRTV.
One of the trainers said, : ” You see a horse that is unhappy, sullen in their stall,
with their back to you and head down and not performing, WHETHER YOU WANT
TO OR NOT YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE HORSE HAPPY !!!!! A HAPPY HORSE WILL GIVE YOU EVERYTHING AND MORE”
WILL FRANKEL BE HAPPY ????? A RHETORICAL QUESTION ????
Max
Sign. This is an excellent question. Frankel clearly likes to run. Anyone can see that. However the Prince is keen on breeding perfect racing horses, of which Frankel is his own home bred of at least three generations, and there are many mares at Juddmonte alone awaiting a date with Frankel. Racing might be academic for another reason: no one wants to race against him.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Very True Max !!!!
But only a happy horse will make an owner/breeder and happy man!!!
We will see. I would like to have seen him run in the ARC or some more
challenging races. I wonder how many defections from the 2012 ARC would
happen if he was entered????
Max
Sign. None of them want to face Frankel or more likely watch him race away. Rival top jockey Frankie Dettori said that Frankel is unbeatable. He also said that, although he has raced many times against him for Godolphin, Sheikh Mohammed’s British racing stable, he has never actually seen Frankel’s face, only his backside in a distance. LOL!
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Great Comment Max,
Wonder if Frankel might want to come to BIG ASS TUESDAY, I am sure we
could dig up a British ale or two for him and he could meet Zenny and get
a conversation going !!!
It would still be fun to see how many horses defected for the ARC if he ran and if he could run that distance efficiently and effectively. Although he was “put to sleep” in his last race and won with his usual powering home.
Max
Sign. Frankel was running last at the beginning of the Juddmonte. He might have been signaling to Z that he appreciated her trademark technique?
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Oh yes, I noticed he finally learned to settle, yes, maybe Zenny sent him
some tips.

Good Sunday Morning to everyone!
Mr. Cline, thank you for your answer and video about Lanes End and beautiful grounds and staff. I love that you hire young and promote from within, Will you ever consider hiring some of us old folks in the future to do, whatever needs doing. I am sure many of us will work cheap, just to be a part of it all. God’s blessings to Lanes End, Zenyatta, 12Z and all ,forever. To the Mosses, thank you forever from the bottom of my heart, for giving and keeping this blog going for all of us. It means more than you will ever know to so many of us. Zenny and 12Z, I love you forever.
Debbie G and Peggy, Count me in on the contributions to buy the adjoining farms and Havre de Grace. I am a little short now, since I ami going to the Breeders Cup, but I will catch up and contribute. That would be just a dream come true, would’nt it?
Marty and Trina,
Marty, Sorry, I missed your birthday. Hope it was wonderful. Riding a horse to a drive-in, sounds like something I would have done, when I was young, if I had a horse. As Zenny and Dottie would say, that is just “Too Cute”! Happy, happy Birthday!!! Trina, your poems are just priceless!

I have been keeping track of I’ll Have Another at Big Red Farm
There are several you tube videos since he has gotten there. We also have a young gal over there who keeps track of all the American stallions there, but right now her name
escapes me. You can also find Big Red Farm and there is an English page. They welcome people to contact them. It is really a beautiful place. His groom fell in love with him and is working on a nickname to come close to what his name translates to in Japanese. Here is one link. Enjoy!

Dear Janet and Darlene,
Love the video you posted of IHA, I can watch and watch over and over, too.
Here is one I found done by Horse Racing Nation, it is a few segments from his

also she mentions a nick name for him, they don’t have one yet and
IAH IS GETTING JAPANESE LESSONS !!!! So glad he is better at foreign languages than I am.

Dear Marshall,
Horses who are traumatized like Jackson Bend can have permanent issues like we said.
However, a long rest on a farm as, Nick Zito, reccommended is the cure all for all horses.
Whenever they have a problem or issue, turning them out to forget their cares, worries and trauma in a pasture to be a horse, soon clears their head.
Am looking for written information on him, have not seen anything yet. Maybe just
mental, which is the easiest to cure with GREAT PASTURE LIFE.
Keta
Jackson Bend to go on long rest
Mark Singelais tweet 3-2 favorite Emcee wins the Grade I Forego at Saratoga. Jackson Bend finished last, coming off his collision on the Oklahoma last month
Mike MacAdam tweet Nick Zito said Jackson Bend was flat, may not be mentally recovered from collision. May get long rest on farm.
Thoroughbred Times tweet
Zito on Jackson Bend, 7th in Forego: “I think we’ll give him a long rest now. The jock said he was flat. All the tests came back fine
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
OH Yes, Jackson Bend needs some time to be a horse on a farm somewhere,
where he can clear his head and be a horse and forget about the trauma.
Horses are soooo very delicate. A couple of months at the farm should do it
and he will be good a new !!!
Have a great time being a horse Jackson, forget the track and all of “its craziness”.
A little TLC and lots of fun running around will definately help you clear your head.

Dear Judy B,
Did you see the above link on Frankel’s projected retirement.
THE BIG QUESTION IS “WILL HE BE HAPPY ?????”
Max
Sign. The only guarantee of happiness for any young sire is an audience with the great Queen.
carol in utah
the problem with that is she will ruin him for the rest of his life….no one could ever compare
Max
Sign. The Queen would ruin anyone. She is too nice and good a horse for that. She makes all of us better for being in her presence near and far. She inspires love and hope. The same would be true for Frankel.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear Max, Carol, Tony and Sue.
The Queen is a professional at everything she does and she does everything well. Before Ann and Jerry bought her at the yearling sale,
when they went to see her she put her head on Ann’s shoulder.
What a display of perfect temperment breeding from both DAM and SIRE side by Eric Kronfeld. She is truely his brain child, just like Frankel is to
his owner.
TOO CUTE COMMENTS, MAX
Max
Sign. I did not know about the details of the meeting with Z before the sale. Amazing. In a way, she picked them? During the sale, I noticed from the sale video that she was calling out, maybe to them or David Ingordo? She is a wonder horse. These were smart moves to get a very good home.
sue and tony
Max, we love your comment!!!
Max
How well I remember her BCC race in 2010. I have never felt like that for any other horse, or anything else for that matter, before or since. She was literally awe inspiring. I could not believe it, and I still cannot believe it. She was so grand. It was greatness before our eyes. No one can explain it. I was screaming, waving my ams and jumping up and down, something that I just do not do. But it happened. She is our magnificient equine inspiration both on and off the race track.

Oh Yes,
She was saying “Pick me; Pick me; Pick me”.
I guess it was Royal Delta or on of the mares last year that was
really kicking up a storm in the auction. Her trainer said that
she thought she was going to race because it was sooo noisy.
Max
JudyB. Thanks for this. She was really vocal. I am now positive that she was calling to Ann, Jerry and David. What a bargain that price turned out to be. She was however regal even at that young age, and was still growing into her 17+ hands. This video is worth watching over and over.
judy berube from Rhode Island

Dear Sign:
Max filled me in on the plan to retire Frankel at the the end of this racing season. I hope and pray he is going to be happy in retirement. Maybe his connections at the stud farm will make sure he is ridden every day like Three Chimney’s does here for their stallions. I think it’s good physically and emotionally for the stallions if they have that exercise and feel of racing every day. Here’s an article on the Three Chimney’s exercise program. Hugs, JB
http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/farm-management/farm-management-10-04-08.aspx
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear Judy B.
I really like the idea of an exercise program for the “boys” too. Some do not want to have any part of being ridden again, but some really enjoy it as it is pleasure riding not race riding, once they figure that out. What a challenge to take Frankel
on a “Trail Ride”??? WHOO HOOO YEEE HAAAA !!! SPLAT (on the ground) !!!
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sign:
Love your post. “splat”; ouch. Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Very interesting article. This lady was the one who looked after Big D.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I didn’t know she looked after Big D.
As Sign said, some stallions like to be ridden and others do not. I guess we know which group Big D was in. That feisty boy would have made his feelings known for sure. Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. No one ever jumped on Big D’s back without an invitation. Same thing for going anywhere near his territory. D. Wayne Lukas said that Big D was the most difficult horse whom he had ever trained. Ha! I love that Big D. Lucarno looks like he could take a few bites out of any trespassers. Same for Point of Entry. Do not mess with these guys.
Max
JudyB. Forgot to mention that First Defence’s trainer was Robert J. Frankel. The Frankel magic may pass to Dundonnel?
Max
Sign and JudyB. Juddmonte already has one possible successor to Frankel. Dundonnel is 2 and recently won impressively at York and is on route to the 2000 Guineas next year, if all goes well. He was bred in Kentucky. His sire is First Defence. His dam is Family, an unraced full sister to Danehill. Dam sire is of course Danzig. We must keep an eye on this horse.

Danedream had to dig deep to regain her crown in the Longines – Grosser Preis Von Baden at Baden-Baden in Germany on Sunday.
There were concerns that the combination of a little cut in the ground and a potentially slow pace in an eight runner tactical contest would count against last year’s winner of the Group One mile and a half contest.
Andrasch Starke had the four year old filly in a prominent position, just off the pace being set by Next Vision who was acting as a pacemaker for German Derby runner-up Novellist.
The latter was partnered for the first time by William Buick but the young jockey, who is enjoying a stellar position, never managed to get his mount into a challenging position having held him up in rear and the three year old could only stay on at the one pace to finish fourth.

Danedream’s trainer: “We would be happy if Camelot turns up…but I’d honestly rather not see Frankel – he’s a horse from another planet.”

Dear Keta, Max, Sign and Z Fans:
Love Danedream. Hugs, JB
Keta
Max,
This was a really close race for Danedream.
When you watch the video, she takes quite a stumble about half way through.
Also, I noticed she was more lathered on the shoulders at the end than I usually see her. But, she won & on to the Arc.
Have a great Sunday!

I think they did not want her to work tooo hard in this race so it was closer and she
could “have some in the tank” for the ARC. Sooo hope she beats those boys again,
to beat Nathaniel was just awesome.
Max
Sign. I am reserving my support until we see the line up. Orfevre’s in that race too.

Hey Everyone. We should know something on Tuesday.
Thanks for all the kind words and support.
Max
Keta. You are right. Her great grand sire, Nijinsky, used to get really lathered up, so that maybe she has inherited that trait. She is a small horse, but she has loads of talent. Also courage. Like Frankel, Danehill is her dam sire.
BTW thanks for that great video.
Max
What wonderful ears that you have, 12Z. And a diamond and green duct tape?
This foal is perfect, like his mother.

What is the green duct tape for!!

Dear Max:
Love this photo of 12Z (but then I love all of his photos). Thank you. The white marking on his face is starting to look more Diamond Shaped that Star Burst, isn’t it! Guess the green duct tape qualifies him as a member of our Red Neck Club. Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. The interesting thing about 12Z’s duct tape is that he now has it in two places. It used to be in only one spot. 12Z has very good taste if he likes duct tape that much and is not afraid to show it.
Keta
Max,
Maybe he’s a redneck at heart!
After all, he was born in Kentucky :)

Dear Max:
Should we expect anything less from our Prince. He’s got his mother’s flare for style. Remember her blue leg wraps! Hugs, JB

Dear Max:
Thanks for this link on Shack. I wondered why he was scratched on Saturday. Hope he is over the cough soon. Hugs, JB
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear Judy,
He was scratched because of cough and not 100 %.
I am concerned that he is getting burned out physically and
may not do well in his next couple of races. I really wish that
they had let him be a champion middle distance or sprinter
rather than all that trying routing !!!
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sign:
I think he was pushed too much. Running in all the Triple Crow races and your right; should have kept him in sprints. I hope he recovers soon. Hugs, JB
