Q:
Does Coz have Zenyatta’s personality?
Jan Graff
Hull, GA
A: Yes, he’s similar to his mother. He’s so confident, and he’s confident like she is. Being a baby, that’s kind of rare. He’s very confident in himself and that’s encouraging.
Q:
At what point in a young horse’s training is he or she galloped fast enough to determine whether that horse looks promising?
Donna Richardson
California, MD
A: We don’t really ask for speed here. It’s more about their way of going. You get an idea, maybe three months from the start—this one has ability, this one not so much—but we don’t flat out go here. That’s for the trainer. We teach them how to run.
A farm environment is so different from the race track. There will be horses for whom the lightbulb just doesn’t go on yet. It has to do with their age too. They can take longer to mature—as they get to the racetrack that bulb is getting brighter. If it’s a mature horse and you get the idea that they know what they’re doing, you may be able to tell if they have promise, but there are a bunch of question marks in between.
Think of them as kids; we’re the elementary school.
Q:
What does Mayberry Farm’s do differently than other farms that break yearlings?
Elizabeth Ames
Palo Alto, CA
A: I think we have more of a hands on approach than other people in our position. My mom, my sister, my cousin, myself, we’re all hands on (note: April answered this question). There’s no training from the car or calling assistants or taking weekends off. It’s all day and all night. When there’s a sick horse, we get up at midnight and come out. We get to know our horses, we spend so much time with them.
We’ve also been on the racetrack, and we know where the horses are going. We came from there. Most people start at the farm and go to the race track; we did the opposite. We know what trainers want and what they’re looking for, so it gives us a little bit of an advantage in that regard.

Just watched a video of Junior returning to his barn…..he “grabbed a quarter” at the start….in the video you can see a chunk of his hoof missing…he ran the entire race bleeding and in pain….and was only beaten by less than 2 lengths….he is my hero…
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Carol in Ark,
I did not know about CC’s grabbed quarter — poor guy, and yet he tried as hard as he could! I love this horse and hope he will be okay. Get a good rest now noble CC; you have certainly earned a bit of R&R.
Hugs
Terry Crow
CC did not grab a quarter. The number three horse, a hopeless longshot who should not have been in the race, .made a left turn at the start and stepped on CC”s hoof. When you see the film of the start of the race you will know what I mean. Pretty courageous effort considering the pain he must have been in. The public has been robbed of its chance to see if CC was indeed a triple crown horse.

Poor guy.
Extremely painful. So brave to finish 4th. A CHAMP indeed.

The film of the incident tells the tale a bit better than the picture. However, it certainly was a bit of bad luck. Still, he only got beat about two lengths.

Dear Ann, TC and Z Fans:
Brave boy indeed. He kept trying even with that awful cut. Hope he recovers completely and races in the BCC. Love this boy. Love and Hugs, JB

Thanks for the photo. It explains a lot. Ouch!
CC still had the determination to keep on trying — what a guy!!

@Tiz Herself, thank you for putting things into perspective. Mr. Coburn was of course speaking from an extremely emotional and financial point of view. He has this right whether or not we agree. He now understands the ruthlessness of this industry the hard way which breaks my heart. Give him and his connections a break to recover everyone. They are new to all of this. Unfortunately, this experience will effect their expectations and enthusiasm. Also, it’s not appropriate to compare him or his connections to Penny or The Mosses who have not sacrificed their savings and retirement into a single promising horse. Think about it. Wouldn’t you be just a tad upset? Geez.
Sally B. (Auntie cherishes Z and her young)
Thank you Tiz and Faithful Z supporter for speaking. I liked what you had to say.

On the other hand, I was absolutely thrilled to see Australia win the Epsom Derby… the son of Galileo x Ouija Board, with any luck maybe will get to see him in person at the Irish Derby at the Curragh at the end of the month as have tickets to be there in person!
On my Horse Tracker (Europe’s equivalent to Equibase’s Virtual Stable) some of the other possible runners:
Kingston Hill
Mekong River
Juniper Tree – Galileo x Alexander Goldrun
War Command – War Front x Wandering Star
that list can go on and on :-)
Darwin is a son of Big Brown – Cool Ghoul, by Silver Ghost owned by Coolmore and who was a Irish Group 3 winner at three. Darwin is running in the Sapphire Stakes on Irish Derby Day.
The Railway Stakes for two year olds is on that day also and there is a 1/2 brother to Street Sense in Mesmeris racing for Darley / Godolphin connections. (Sired by Dubawi)

Even though it’s upsetting to Chrome & his owner not to win the Belmont, I have the triple & roses already reserved for one or all of Z’s these. One of them will win the next triple. Why does CA Chrome have to wear nose strips? What are they for?
Jennifer P
Same reason some human athletes wear them – they help keep his airways open and help him breathe. Some horses gain a significant benefit from this, others don’t really seem to be helped by it.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
The strips help keep the nasal passages open so teh orse can breathe more freely. They’re like Breathe-Rite strips, but for horses.
Sunny B.
Thanks for the reply. Also what do people think about Chrome’s owner’s rants? He objected that those horses who won were allowed to race even though they had not participated in either the Derby nor the Preakness. Is he right or wrong? Now when Secretariat won, he not only won all of them fair and square but in record time. Big Red was THE best. To this day. :))
Janie (in L.A.)
I agree with Steve Coburn – there is not a “level playing field” when it comes to the Belmont, especially when there is a horse going for the Triple Crown. Back in earlier racing days, horses ran in races closer together so it was normal to only have 2 or 3 weeks between races – so even if a horse entered in the Belmont didn’t run in the Derby or Preakness, chances are he ran another race 2 or 3 weeks ago. But nowadays it’s not fair for a horse who ran in the Derby and the Preakness to have to face a horse that’s well rested and hasn’t raced for 5 or 6 weeks – they have an unfair advantage. I’m not sure what the solution or answer is, but I’ve always thought this, so I’m glad he said something about it.
Terry Crow
Secretariat was the best, no doubt about it. However, he faced little competition in the Belmont. I lean towards Janie’s position. The owner is just upset that horses had to qualify for the derby via a points system but that anybody could run in the Belmont. One of those anybodies, a one time winner, was the one who veered to the left and injured his horse.
Max
TC. Very sorry about the Belmont results for Chromie. He is still a great racer with those two classic wins.
Don’t you think that Secretariat faced little competition in the Belmont because he had by then intimidated all of the other horses into giving up by record breaking wins in the KD and the Preakness? He was basically running against the clock in the Belmont and he beat it too. Frankel had the same problem. Few owners wanted to race their horses against him and lose. My favorite Hastings won the Belmont. He dealt with his competition by biting them on the track. He then went on to be the grand sire of Man o’ War. Who knows what the racing gods may yet have in store for Chromie?
Free the Moose! Power up Danny!
Terry Crow
You are correct Max. When you stop to think about it, it is surprising that the Belmont was not a walkover for Big Red. My opinion is somewhat shaded by the fact that I knew Art Sherman in the old days and have nothing but respect for him. For HIM, I feel bad.
Max
TC. I understand your feelings. Sherman does seem like a real gentleman and deserving of being a Triple Crown winning trainer. Winning a KD and a Preakness is still huge. He has done wonders with that horse, and I hope that it continues. There are many great races out there. I would like to see Chromie race as an older horse. Too many early retirements.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Hope we hear how Ride on Curlin, Matuszak, and CC are doing and that no one is badly injured. If anyone knows or finds out, please let us know here on the blog.

It is unfortunate when someone fails us, but it isn’t as bad as when we fail ourselves. The minute we make a mistake or fall short, we begin to condemn ourselves. How could we have been so dumb, so inept, so careless? We are victims by our own mouths. It is too easy to make a habit of thinking we are second-rate, not quite equal to others. If we say it enough times, we think it, and it all feeds down into our hearts to surface again when we don’t need it. Who can love us if we don’t love ourselves? Who will build us up if we are busy tearing us down? Confidence is winning over self-not others. But we have to stir up the gift that is within us, see that we appreciate all the small things we can do well. We can only be what we give ourselves power to be.
These words are mine and they are true.

Dear Sheena,
MAYBE I’ll live long enough to see another Triple Crown winner. I sure hope so! It’s awful to see a horse injured even if it is only a minor injury. Best wishes CC and Cirrus des Aigles! Congratulations to Australia! That’s wonderful that you saw the hatching of the first chick! Love to see the parents with their new babies. Fubu had a wonderful birthday celebration. I’m so glad he made it to his birthday! Bless Angel girl and Spot and congratulations on their engagement! Zoe is such a love. So many emotions today. I was at the Belmont yesterday and did not know until this morning when I read the blog that Chrome was injured. What a horrible thing. I was right on the rail just before the finish line and boy he was really trying right to the end. It is so unfortunate we couldn’t have seen what he might have done if he didn’t get hurt right at the start. Oh well, what he did do is fantastic and I still have great respect for him. I hope we see him in the Breeder’s Cup.

cc’s owner had some valid points about these other guys bringing in these fresh horses
at the end of the hard road. he was just upset and shows how much he loves this horse.so sad for mr sherman also. he must have been heartbroken. i have never singled a horse in my sports betting other than zenyatta, but i did with cc, we really thought he would do it. i don’t care about the money lost, i just am saddened that it didn’t happen for him, and was totally unaware of the injury. glad so many of you are up on these things.hope to see him well and running in the breeder’s cup. i will single him again. it just wasn’t his day!!! thank you mosses, and all of the rest of team z for keeping this going and updating us with the progress and photos of Queen Z and her beautiful family glad to see zenyatta will take a little time off from having babies. there’s still alot of time left for more. best wishes to all, marsha & joe

So grateful for a wonderful Triple Crown journey. What a ride! Chrome is a reminder that God gives us eyes to see the beauty, strength, and magnificence of His creation!
No resentment Mr. Colburn. It won’t empty yesterday’s sorrow, it will only empty today of its strength. The question isn’t “why did he lose the Belmont, but why did The Lord give him to me in the first place and then allow him to win the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness?” What an awesome privilege.

Sheena. Just read that Cirrus took the red eye back to Chantilly at 3 am. They x-rayed his leg and found something amiss, but the vets are hopeful that it is not a serious injury. That Cirrus is one iron horse to win that tough race on a lame leg. Trainer said that nothing can stand in the way of his will to win. I’ll say. She’s hoping that he will return to England for the Champion’s meet in the fall.

Agree, Sheena, great for Rafa! I thought Djokovic would likely do it, as he’s younger, and Rafa had some injury problems, but it’s nice that Nadal is not going away yet.
Janet Newman
Like so many I am deeply disappointed that CC did not win the Belmont and the Triple Crown, I know Mr. Coburn is very upset and even today has not backed down from his comments and even expanded them in an even more negative manner.
How unfortunate for the horse. He is a passionate man, I get that, but all of us have dreams that have been crushed. His horse does come from the line of a Peter Pan and Belmont winner by the name of A. P. Indy. He did not get to run in the Kentucky Derby having been scratched the night before. Does that tarnish his legacy?
California Chrome, I will continue to love you and your accomplishments. Rest and heal up, you deserve it. I just hope Mr. Coburn comes to grip with his decision to get involved in horse racing and all it entails.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Well said Janet. I think the thing that I am MOST disappointed about is the fact that we will never know whether or not a totally sound Chromie could have done it. It was many hours later that I learned about his injury. I had watched the race (with no sound) outside of a ballroom about to be packed with more than 400 people for a dinner “gala” celebrating local nurses. The hotel had the good sense to have several large screen TVs strategically placed around the reception area (i.e., cocktail stands), but few were actually watching. I couldn’t believe my eyes when, despite being in what looked to be a good spot, CC wasn’t able to kick things into another gear.
The event was the longest thing I have ever sat through, and having to make pleasant conversation almost did me in. Other than a quick phone chat with Debbie G, I couldn’t commiserate with anyone or get anyone else’s input about the race. I wasn’t even sure who had won! On the way home, I started hearing about Mr. Coburn’s remarks. I also felt that, given the emotion of the moment, he should be given some slack, but I was disappointed that he felt the need to continue today. The whole thing seems “not fair” to me as well, but there is a time and place for sharing those thoughts.
I have not lived through the disappointment of similar past Belmont defeats (not that I wasn’t around – just wasn’t into horse racing at the time). This was a stunner. However, nothing can be taken away from the past accomplishments of California Chrome, and the fact that he ran as well as he did under the circumstances shows what a professional he is. BRAVO to Art Sherman’s team and Victor E. for their expertise, love, and care for this horse, and best wishes to all of his connections. I am SO hopeful that his injuries will heal and that he will continue to race. It would be absolutely super to see him at this year’s BC.
Terry Crow
Sandy-Your health being what it is you can understand the problems involved in what was surely one of the most courageous runs ever.
Sally B. (Auntie cherishes Z and her young)
Janet, A.P. Indy was scratched because I believe of an injury and so could not participate for a number of weeks. I am sure he could not work for a while until the vet gave him the “okay” approval. In my opinion this is not the same thing as having a healthy injury free horse rest and just do a bit of his works, then wait and enter the Belmont, as was the case with various horses in this Belmont.
A.P. Indy came from injury to clinch the Belmont and he has been an awesome sire!
I love him too!!
I am beginning to wonder if those who qualify with points for the Derby including those extras that did not quite make it but were just shy of qualifying in the 20 should be the only ones allowed to compete in the Preakness and the Belmont.
Lets compare apples to apples when considering the Triple Crown.
This horse that injured CC as I understand it, did not have points earned to be near qualifying for the Derby. He was allowed to run in the Belmont. Why is that??
hugs, Sally B
Janet Newman
Sally B,
Good point. I do believe that Matterhorn, as a long shot should not have been there. But Eclipse Thoroughbreds and TP are always going to go for the big ones when given the opportunity. I do not think being on the derby trail and the points to get into that race transfers into the Preakness or Belmont. I may be wrong on that, but different tracks, different states and different rules.
Is there changes needed, I believe so, will there be, I do not know.
Medal Count was in the derby, took a break from the Preakness, the came back in the Belmont, so was that unfair to CC, Ride On Curlin and General A Rod? In my opinion and only my opinion yes. In the past, fields were smaller, there were new shooters going against the past triple crown winners.
Considering CC’s injury, he did well to finish the race and makes it even more disappointing knowing what could have been. Horseracing will be debating this for a long time to come.
Max
I think that Janet was making the point that Tonalist followed much the same path as AP Indy to the Belmont. Tonalist was too sick with a respiratory infection to make it into the KD, but he raced recently in the Peter Pan on May 10 and then in the Belmont on June 7.
As for qualification for the Triple Crown, the three races of the US Triple Crown are distinct and are carried on in three different jurisdictions which have their own rules about entries. Entry in the KD is not relevant to entry by a horse in the other two races. This has been the practice since the inception of the TC. So far only 11 horses have met the challenge, which was never meant to guarantee winners.
Terry Crow
Tonalist was a stakes winner and was a worthy entrant. Matterhorn, on the other hand, was still eligible for non-winners of two. There were three such horses in the race. The only one of the three who had competed in the first two races, or any of them, was Ride on Curlin who therefore, had earned his place in this race. There are too many owners who want to be in on the action and won’t take no for an answer. Ria Antonia in the Preakness is a prime example. I doubt if Churchill Downs will ever willingly relinquish its place in the hierarchy of the triple crown. It will take someone smarter, and with a lot more authority, than whoever is out there now. I believe that it is time for a racing czar. There are too many fiefdoms now.
Maryp NY
I agree with all of the above about California Chrome. Art Sherman is such a gentleman and a long time horseman said his injury will take a little time to heal and he will be let out in the paddock at the farm for some needed r&r. I’m sure he’ll get lots of love too.
Zenny, I think you would love Junior. He has great heart and this loss won’t keep him down.
I know that Mr Coburn is passionate about CC but when his wife poked him to stop he should have. He should have congratulated the winner and stifled himself. Just my humble opinion.
I, too, hope he comes to grip with his decision to get involved in horse racing and all it entails.
Jude
I’d like to add my 2 cents here on the “fairness” issue of the TC and how it is run. It is what it is. Why should anyone be forced to listen to an embarrassment to the sport as Mr. Coburn? He must have known in advance that losing was a possibility and had a gracious prepared statement instead of a needless, classless rant. He knew he would have ample opportunity to be interviewed on air. It was VERY upsetting to me to hear him so angry and name calling. I was afraid he would take out his frustration on Victor or Chrome. I can’t imagine that :( Mr. Sherman on the other hand is a class act in every way. He took the defeat like a true gentleman of life and of racing. No one knew at this point that CC was hurt or how it happened. I hope he makes a full recovery. From what I could see Victor knew he wasn’t his best and rode him as well as possible. Mr. Coburn needs to learn that racing is NOT about HIM…..it’s about his HORSE!!! He sure enjoyed the spotlight a little too much for my taste. He even went so far after the Preakness as to insult Churchill Downs………SHAME on him! No accounting for no class I guess.
To finish on a positive note, I am looking forward to the Queen’s son, Cozmic One, being on the tracks in 2015 (God willing) and hopefully at the Derby and beyond. Long live Zenyatta, her magnificent reign and her babies. I’ll be rooting for each one.

♥ Auntie Judy aka JAG / So. Calif. ♥
I agree with you!! Who in their right mind asks the “loser” how they feel? Insensitive! Go to the winning team first. IMO Mr. Coburn was so hurt and upset that his “child” Junior just lost the last leg of the Triple Crown he couldn’t even think straight! He has a Guardian Angel – his sis – the emotional pain of losing was so deep yet nobody considered where he was coming from. Shame on them!
Peeps seem to forget that he’s had this colt since birth. To him Chromey is a child and Coburn projects those feelings whether WE like it or not. I never condoned his comments (in his fit of rage), however, he has a perfect right to his OWN FEELINGS. People are rude to say he should have felt differently.
I knew he would apologize (I’d hoped sooner than he did), but it was heartfelt. I accept it. He wears his heart on his sleeve (as I do). I’d rather he be passionate and protective of his Junior – and be with an excellent trainer – than to hear about some shady stuff going on! People need to put THAT into perspective….

Dear Max.No luck for Shorty today! Abby has had a long season should be on his summer break now really. How did you find out about CDA I’ve been on racing post all day but they only said he’d left Epsom at 3am.Am so glad it’s not serious he was very brave to win that race on such an undulating track.Yes,Galileo won the Irish Derby as well and the King George and Queen Elizabeth at Ascot.Australia would only run if the ground is suiting him.As for CC he has much to be proud of we know it takes a special kind of magic to win the Triple Crown I often wonder if there is a horse capable of winning it over here again.Nissy is venting his anger at FB on his blog tonight Mouses!!Free the Moose!PU Dan and CDA.Sheena.

Sheena. The news of CDA is now in most of the UK media such as the Racing Post. Also saw it in Sporting Life. I’m not really sure what those French vets found in his leg, but it’s not certain how just serious that it is. Corrine thinks that he might have taken a bad step on the course. They walked him after the race and the lameness eased a bit. Apparently it did not affect his appetite, and his attitude is still good. You know how energetic that he is. I just hope that he’s okay because he would be a major loss to racing. That horse is a fighter. Corrine thanked you Brits for being so nice to CDA. I guess that the vets at Epsom were very attentive.
Some day the stars will align and the racing gods will bestow another Triple Crown in the UK. Until then Nijinsky is holding on tightly to that title. What a marvellous horse that he was. His daddy just missed the US Triple Crown, but his son snared the English one. Life is strange. Hope however always endures.
Don’t get what happened to Nissy, but glad that it’s over.

My loyalties are to Dan, but I have to admire this horse. He’s a real character too. His trainer says that he always lets her know if there is something wrong. Loves getting sugar cubes. When she’s giving an interview, CDA chews away on her clothes and pulls off her scarf. No kidding. He has to be the center of attention.

Dear Max:
CDA sounds to be quite a character. What a record 58 starts, 21 wins, 20 seconds and 6 times third and has earned over 9M. Wow! Wishing him a complete recovery. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Sheena:
Excellent video – just amazing to see how gentle the parents can be with a chick – must admit though, I prefer my trout cooked in butter with some flaked almonds. How long will it take for the second egg to crack? Thanks for the post, Hugs KathyR

Dear Sheena:
Thank you for this amazing video. Was quite a struggle for the little one getting out of his shell and good to see him lifting his head and looking to be fed. Monty and Glesni are great parents. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap, Herc and all the Sweeties

Congratulations, Zenny, on over 10,000 fans! Just logged on and there it was ‘over’ 10k! So excited that CoZ is going to be racing in the not-too-distant future.
Loved just reading all of today’s comments. There is such wisdom on this website. And such heart! Thank you all for the wonderful post-Belmont words. Love CC too, and wish well to him and his owners and trainer. God’s many blessings, Zenny to you, your ‘kids’, and your fans. Love you all, Elizabeth

E in NM,
I was the 10,000th fan today! I have visited the site for a long time to ck in on The Queen, but never noticed the fan #s until today. Think I could get a visit to see Cosmic One or the Q herself in person? I didn’t hear any bells & whistles go off when I became #10,000. If no visit, then still an honor to be among the loving & devoted fans.

Does anyone know if Jess’s Dream (Rachel Alexandra’s colt) had his first race? I thought I saw somewhere that he did, but I cannot find it now??
Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

Dear Celest:
Here’s the Equibase Chart for Jess’s Dream.

As you can see, he has not raced as yet. Maybe you read that he was in training at the Stonestreet Training Center in Summerfield, FL. Don’t know if he’s been sent to a trainer at a race track like Coz yet. Love and Hugs, JB
